Former Arsenal defender Steve Morrow says he is ready for the challenge of MLS, as he battles to help Dallas push for the US championship. The former Northern Ireland international, who spent nine years at Highbury before switching to QPR in 1997, arrived in America on trial in the off-season after hearing of the opportunity of playing in the US top-flight.
Offers from other English clubs came in, but Morrow decided that he wanted to take up the challenge of playing in MLS.
“”After I left Queens Park Rangers at the end of my contract, I had an offer to come and play in MLS for the Dallas Burn,”" Morrow told TEAMtalk. “”It was really ongoing until about Christmas time when I finally got the contract sorted out.”"
Dallas have only played one match in the new season that kicked off late last month, unfortunately for Morrow, his MLS debut opened with a 2-0 defeat to MLS champions San Jose in the Cotton Bowl.
The 31-year-old, who famously broke his arm while celebrating Arsenal’s 1993 League Cup Final win with Tony Adams, went on to speak about what he thinks of the standard of play in MLS, noting that he feels the league is improving all the time.
“”I was quiet surprised when I came out last September and had a look at the league, thinking that it wouldn’t be a good level of football, but I was very surprised to find out that it is a very good level,”" he added.
“”It’s growing every year, the MLS, and the standards are improving all the time, so I looked at the league as a good challenge, which it has proved to be so far.”"
Ok Gunners, if you live in an MLS city this is your chance to see a former Highbury hero. If anybody sends in a picture of themselves wearing an Arsenal jersey at an MLS match WITH Steve, Arsenal America will send them a prize.
