Arsenal Dominate PFA XI Wenger Grasping At Straws
Apr 28

With a 2-2 Draw to a side we could and should have taken in Bolton, an earlier draw in a crucial game with ManUre, the race that was supposedly “in our hands” seems to be out of reach. So one has to ask, what’s the problem? It seems to be a lack of the ability to finish. We started the season strong and seem to have fallen off since the set in of 2003. Our losses have typically ended in losing a lead towards the close of the match. I wanted to blame the boys up front. Until the award announcement today I hadn’t heard much from Henry. I wanted to blame the defense. Due to injury there hasn’t seemed to be a consistenly appearing back four. But I’m not sure what goes wrong. Maybe someone who’s been able to see the games on the tube can enlighten me, but I hold the entire team responsible. The 11 on the field have to act as a unit to win. Here’s hoping for at least an FA cup championship, and if God, Buddah, Allah, or whomever loves us, may ManU crumble.

I think it was the Defense this year . . . Arsenal’s been known to rely on steady rock solid D and this year it didn’t happen. We have depth in the midfield and the forward positions but there isn’t any depth on D and it’s killing us. Also having Viera injured - the team really loses its Spirit for some reason. We could’ve used him in the latter half of Man U and the Bolton game. Let’s hope that Wenger has the budget to re-sign Viera b/c I don’t want to see the Gunners have money troubles b/c of the stadium and do a “Barcaleona” next season by not signing some good D. There have been several games this season where we’ve lost leads after being up 1-2 goals - Liverpool, Aston Villa, Bolton, Man U (just after Henry scored) . . . sheesh, there may be more!

Henry has carried the team at times and I was quite happy with this play this year . . . sure he didn’t show up on some games but strikers go in and out of form and he’s still one of the top 3 strikers in the world if not the best (I think he is but you can argue this till the cows come home) -Check out the interesting FourFourTwo article about the World’s Best Strikers - Henry is No.1. I think Henry needs a partner upfront - Bergy - I love him but he didn’t make much of an impact this season. Jeffers needs to develop more and Wiltord has been off more than on this season. Maybe Aliadiere (spelling) will come off injury and make an appearance next year.

Also, after watching a few Man U games (esp. against Real Madrid), they had the killer instinct, spirit and pride. I hate’em but I give them kudos for trying to mount a comeback in the second game against Real. The guys don’t give up . . . overall, I don’t think Man U was better than Arsenal - I still think Arsenal has superior talent but as a team, Man U was better this year. Our lads had the form early in the season (continuing from last year’s wicked run to win the EPL) but lost it after Christmas. Exhaustion and Injuries may have something to do with it but it has been disappointing to watch the team not play the full 90 mins with hunger and desire to win the championship. It is harder to repeat and this kinda reminds me of 1999. Fortunately, Man U isn’t going to win a treble this time but it still sucks that ManUre will again stop Gunner’s try for a repeat.

Defence. Selling Upson was a BIG mistake. He had excellent potential and never let the club down when he provided back up. With Cole out of the side, Pires found it hard to link up with Gio and his game suffered. Gio had one bad game against Blackburn and was replaced but a right midfielder who promptly scored an og against Villa.

The rest of the team has skill that any club would wish for, but when the heads go down no-one can lift a team like Tony Adams. For me the essence of the side left when he decided to retire. Hopefully we can sign John Terry during the summer. There is a similarity between them.

This season is proving to be very hard, but I’ll still be there whatever. It ain’t over until the fat lady sings, but she’s wiating in the wings and clearing her throat.
