Midfielder returns to D.C. United

Associated Press

WASHINGTON — D.C. United midfielder Bobby Convey’s petition for a work permit to play in England has been denied by that country’s Home Office [IN A RARE MOVE OF SENSE AND INTELLIGENCE], the United and Major League Soccer said Thursday.

Convey had hoped to play for Tottenham Hotspur in the English Premier League. He remains on the United’s active roster. [AS ACTIVE AS DC UNITED CAN BE CONSIDERED TO BE, ANYWAY]

“We are obviously extremely disappointed for Bobby [SINCE HE PROBABLY ISN'T],” said United spokesman Dave Kasper. “However, I am confident that he will one day fulfill his ambition of playing in the top leagues of Europe. [GOOD CHOICE OF WORDS, "LEAGUES" INSTEAD OF "TEAMS!" BRAVO!]

The 20-year-old Convey, a Philadelphia native, was a first-round draft pick by the United in 2000. In 2001, he became the youngest player in MLS history to score a goal, notching his first strike at the age of 17 years, 10 months and 11 days. [YES WE ALL POPPED OUR CHERRY AT 17..er...]

And not really Spursenfreude, but there’s another news article about Fergie getting an FA charge for being a belligerent arse at Newcastle. So can we quit with the conspiracy theories now?

UCI Award late tomorrow, I can’t be buggered to do it now. :-)

not sure why you view this as a GOOD THING?!
its bad for Bobbie Convey… and bad for US Soccer…

this would have been another opportunity for a US player to perform on a large stage, get top level competition… and help our National team in the long term…

    I feel bad for Bobbie…

I am excited for the likes of Tim Howard… and I feel almost guilty hoping he lets in 3 or 4 goals per match…!!! he is a solid goalie…. and will be playing for United (barring injury) for years…
it bodes WELL for US Soccer when some of our young players are getting called into action in the biggest leagues in the world.

If they get stuck in MLS they will not get much better… and nor will our National team.

Um, let’s see, Spurs don’t get player. We laugh at Spurs. Spurs bad = Good.

So, Arsenal snuck an American A leaguer past the Home Office, but a starter for the US Nat’s isn’t up to snuff? Sorry, I’m a DC suporter also and am still miffed about the whole deal. Even if Bobby was going to the Sp*rs of all clubs. On a brighter side, we’re glad to have him back.

    ummm…
I have supported Arsenal for about 10 years…
and I still can’t for the life of me muster up any kind of hatred for Spurts…. they suck! they’ve never been any kind of threat to Arsenal… if anything, I pity them. Our rivals are Man U.

If you can’t understand that US players, playing overseas is GOOD for the players … and good for our national team, then there isn’t really much to say… I don’t care if its Spurs / United / or a 1st division team in Spain!!!!!!!! the competition is better and stronger, and the player will be better and stronger for the experience.
