Here’s something to pass the time away and wrack your brain with. Try naming your best ever Arsenal XI out of all the players you ever watched or read about. After you’ve done that name a “Worst ever Arsenal XI”…..i.e. players who could only play crap for us and would always get slagged off by the fans. Here are my best and worst teams….

Good one galaxy gooner. Let me try my worst 11 on you guys - it goes back as far as the dark, dark days of the 60s and includes one or two already “selected” players from later on.

Here’s the breakdown on who I chose for my best and worst XI’s…….
Best XI
GK: Pat Jennings…..next to Sol probably our best capture from N17. I still remember the day he signed for us. The look on all the Spertz fans faces at work who thought he’d never venture up to the classier side of the Seven Sisters Road was a sight to behold. The man himself gave fantastic service between the sticks for us over 6 years. Highlight for me was a league cup tie in 1978 at Manchester City which ended goalless where he single handedly kept us in the game with some breathtaking saves from Peter Barnes, Asa Hartford and Brian Kidd.
Defence:
Lee Dixon….the best right back ever to wear an Arsenal shirt in the 35 years I’ve been supporting Arsenal IMHO
Tony Adams…the man who led us through the most successful time under GG and AW. He truly was Mr Arsenal and was a rock at the back
Frank McLintock….led us to our first Double in 1971. Another great leader
Kenny Sansom…..we’ve had some great left backs over the years including Winterburn, McNab, and Nelson, but Ken was the most complete one out of the lot. Great tackler in defence and was always up in support helping Graham Rix on the left flank.
Midfield:
Rocky Rocastle…..I remember watching Rocky play in the youth cup final in 1985, and thought back then he’d be the best thing we’ve had in midfield since Chippy. The following season he made his first team debut in a 0-0 game at home to Newcastle and outshone another youngster who was just breaking into the Toon Army side at that time….I think it was someone called Gazza. Just a shame he passed away at such a young age. R.I.P Rocky
Patrick Vieira….this was a no brainer. Not putting him in a best Arsenal XI would be out of order. The man is class
Chippy Brady…..one of my personal idols. What he could do with ball was unbelievable. No one could get the ball off him whatsoever. Looked like the ball was stuck to his left foot when he went on those mazy runs of his. Highlight for me was that goal against the scum in the 5-0 rout at WHL at Xmas time 1978 where he robbed Peter Taylor on the edge of the scum box and bent the ball into the top corner of the net. Not only did it win Goal of the Season on Match Of The Day, but it also started the MOTD show for the next three years.
Charlie George…..my first idol at Highbury. I even grew my hair long like his which pissed off my parents and my headmaster at school. He played his heart out for the club. Islington boy as well. Seeing him lying on his back after scoring the winner in the 1971 Cup Final against Liverpool is something I’ll never forget.
Strikers:
Ian Wright….this was hard to select as they have been some great goalscorers at THOF, but WWW just had to be in my best XI. I remember when he signed for us as no one had an inkling that GG was after him. I was watching the news on ITN and they were just about to close the show when they announced that Arsenal had signed him and that he’d be making his debut in a league cup game away at Leicester the following evening. I immediately booked a ticket for the game and went up there to see the master score on his first appearance for us in a 1-1 draw. The following Saturday we were away at Southampton. We won 4-0 and WWW scored a hat-trick. After each goal he scored he ran behind the goal and almost Green Bay Packer like leapt into the Gooner fans behind the goal to celebrate with us.
Thierry Henry….like Vieira’s selection, I couldn’t leave out TH14. After a shaky start, the man has been the one whose helped us to be successful over the last few years. I can’t imagine where we would be without him. Just a pity that WWW isn’t 10 years younger as him and Henry would scare the living daylights out of opponents if they played together.
Worst Arsenal XI
GK: George Wood…..Those of you who remember the nightmare seasons of the early 80’s when we struggled to finish halfway in the old first division will surely remember Woodsy who we signed from Everton. Had this thing about diving over the ball after it went into the net. Maybe it was due to him being Scottish…who knows. Ironically, when he was at Everton and Blackpool before that he would always play a blinder against us.
Defence:
John Kay: Crap right back who looked like he should’ve been playing in a local Sunday pub team on Hackney Marshes instead of gracing the pitch at THOF. Known well for knocking back the booze.
Gus Caesar: All I can say about him is….1988 Littlewood League Cup Final against Luton. We were 2-1 up with five minutes to go. Should’ve been about 12-1 up as we battered the Hatters off the park. One of them games when the Luton keeper was having a blinder. We also missed a penalty that Winterburn took and hit the woodwork 6 times during the game….most notably from Martin Hayes. Anyway I digress….we were 5 minutes away from retaining the cup and Luton had looked a beaten side. John Lukic rolls the ball out to Caesar who with no opponent within 10 yards of him, decides to fall over the ball. Luton pick up the ball and score on the counter to make it 2-2. This gees the Hatters up and with virtually the last kick of the game score the winning goal to take the cup back to Kenilworth Road. Thanks alot Gus!!!
Jeff Blockley: Whatever possessed Bertie Mee to buy this pratt I have no idea. The warning signs were there as the day before he joined us, he scored an own goal for Coventry from 35 yards a la Lee Dixon. He was so bad it was unbelievable. Couldn’t tackle or kick or head a ball to save his life.
Pascal Cygan: Just had to include someone from the present side and after watching PC18’s performance against Newcastle last month where he played the ball to Freddie who was virtually crippled because of an injury he sustained in the match made me to pick the bald headed wonder.
Midfield
John Matthews: Another one who made you wonder how he ever became a footballer. Always looked like a ballerina with the way he held his arms out whenever he got the ball. Always chickened out of 50/50 balls.
Glenn Helder: Famous for being the last player that GG bought to the club before he got his pink slip for taking backhanders. Never settled in at THOF. Scored only one goal. Only positive thing he did was set up DB10 for his first goal for the club against Southampton.
Martin Hayes: Better known as “Whoops-a-daisy Martin Hayesy” as he would always fall over the ball. Only winger I knew that lacked the essential to become a winger…..SPEED!!! Famous clanger of his was in the 1988 Littlewoods League Cup Final where from 1 YARD OUT in front of an open goal he managed to shoot the ball against the post!!!! Even Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder could’ve scored from that range!!!
Perry Groves: Just like naming Vieira in the best XI, this too was a no brainer. We got Perry from Colchester on the cheap, and watching him play you’d know why. Headless chicken he was. All speed, but no idea which way to go with the ball. The only thing he had going for him was he could literally take a throw in deep inside one half of the pitch and reach the 18 yard box up the other end. Funniest moment was when he got injured in a game against Liverpool at THOF. St John’s Ambulance men were carrying him off the pitch. They put him on a stretcher and as they were putting him and the stretcher on a trolley to wheel him to the First Aid room, he somehow fell off the stretcher and into the moat that used to separate the stands from the pitch:)lol
Strikers:
Lee Chapman: One of Terry Neill’s worst signings ever. I saw Chapman play his only decent game for us in a friendly at Chelsea where he scored in a 3-0 win, but every other match he played for us he was crap!!! He was crap at 1-0-1’s with the goalie! He had no skill whatsoever other than using his head. I remember going to watch us play a first division game at Swansea (yes Swansea were in the old first division back then….how times have changed). Deep in injury time with game tied at 1-1, there was a goalmouth melee in the Swansea goalmouth. Chapman had fallen over. Stewart Robson mishit a shot that was going wide. It hit Chapman who was on the floor deceiving the Swans goalkeeper and ended up in the net to win us the game 2-1.
Raphael Meade: Thought this kid was going to be the answer to our goalscoring problems back in the early 80’s, but after a very successful first season, everything after that came off the rails. Never made it. He had the speed, but had no ball control. Got into a lot of trouble of the pitch for assaulting women outside nightclubs on the Holloway Road. Ironically after that Arsenal sold him to a French club called Brest:)lol

And now for the disagreements. Perry Groves was the catalyst for our 80s revival. coming on as sub in 1987 Littlewoods Cup Final, he left the scouse defence on their arse and crossed the ball for Charlie to hit the winner agonisingly slowely over the line.
Martin Hayes once scored 25 goals in a season. The best was against Leicester when he ran half the length of the pitch taking on allcomers before hitting the net.
John Matthews likewise against Sheff Utd, only 14,000 gooners wtinessed the goal.
Just realised how many of these players played in GGs team.
