I know it’s still early, but, following a 0-1 home loss to Charlton today, Sp*rs are officially in the drop zone. I’m a bit torn about this, as, while it would be tremendously funny to see them get relegated, I’d miss the North London Derby, even if it is just next year’s two meetings. Any other thoughts?

The best X’max present I have had for a long time. Bottom 3 and they will be there till they join Div 1. The new year came too early.
Hey if they go down and we dont even win the title I know all Gunners will be happy. Happy is not the word.
Woow just think about it. The last games of the season. We play Leicester at home and Sp##rs away to Wolves. I can see it come even with 19 more games to go

I kid of agree although truth be told the Derby would be better served as an event if S***s were genuinely a top side. That sounds blasphemous, but I’m sick of this match being so damned difficult with so little on the line. Sure its hugely important but is it really more important than the Premiership Championship now…I don’t think so.
I almost would feel bad for S***s except they put more effort into spoiling our season in the two derbies than all their other matches combined by the look of it. And if they weren’t facing the drop they’d be happy losing to ManUre or Chelsea 12-0 if that would deny us the Championship(as realistically they can’t)
And hows this scenario in next year’s FA Cup. ManU drew a tough tie in Newcastle at Old Trafford, while Arsenal’s road is a fair bit gentler even though they are away as they drew a Nationwide side…Tottenham Hotspur! That would make it worth it…

And don’t get me wrong I understand the importance of local pride and honor, but the rivalry is so one-sided right now that that seems less at stake than at any time I’ve seen. And we have not out-grown the rivalry in my mind though many here and in London say we have, but the rivalry has diminished in its importance certainly to Arsenal even if they won’t admit it(and they shouldn’t). This was a magnificent rivalry but S***s decline combined with our ascendancy has made it almost more of a curiosity than a genuine and serious footballing rivalry, which is a shame…

Hotsperm can go down as far as I care. a) They play us very tough, even when we win. And we usually draw away, dropping points. Would rather play a promoted side instead of them so we will have an easier time getting max points b) if they could beat our rivals it would be worth having them up but they lose to them as well, and drop 6 points instead of 4 to us. So they can drop as far as I care c) Chelsea is a bigger game now with title implications. d) it would piss of scum if they dropped.

I couldn’t care less if Spurs go down…
they are NOT a rival… haven’t been for years…
I pity them… they are not even competitive any longer… if they go down… they go down…
more interested in us winning Carling Cup matches than worrying about that sorry lot…
December 29th, 2003 at 5:23 pm
Let them go. Spurs will always do their hardest to take points off us, but never off ManU. These guys once even had a 3-0 lead, and not only lacked the decency to maintain it, but went on to lose 5-3. If there’s one team I want to see down this year it is Spurs, and while they are at it, I hope Everton or Blackburn can join them.

Please..
Who said Spurz are not Arsenal Rivals.. What team do you support.. Come off it Guys.. . Please Stop it if you dont know.
Go down North london or say inner London and asked any Gunner what team they want to see in Div 1 ” United or Spursz” And you will get one Answer and only one answer..
For my Pride as a Gunner I will love to see Spursz down even if we dont win the title.. Did you hear the songs today at St Mary..
Stand under if you Hate Tott**ham not United..
Yes Spurs are Sh** at the moment as a team so the derby might not mean a lots to some of the new fans but in Highbury Spurs comes far ahead before United or Chelsea.. Is history and will always be there..Is in the blood
If Arsenal were to play 11 Osamas’ today all the Spursz funs will support the Osama just for the Pride of their team..
Football is not all about winning at times but for pride as well..
United is just our Title rival and nothing else simple..
December 29th, 2003 at 7:29 pm
Did you wrote Spurz are not Arsenal rivals..
Well you very wrong here but hey I might not know more than you..
But that is a big lie…
December 29th, 2003 at 7:44 pm
What I see here is a question of how many fans who Just support Arsenal and those who really understand the Pride of being a Gunner…
I read somewhere Spursz are not Arsenal Rivals and sad to guess what team he support…
December 29th, 2003 at 9:38 pm
SPURS are not a rival…
I don’t care if they play a few miles down the road…
I have been to Highbury many times… spent alot of time in London….. I know the history between the 2 teams… it doesn’t matter…
to be a RIVAL…. there needs to be competition between the teams…
THERE IS NO COMPETITION….SPURS are NOT GOOD….. haven’t been decent for years…
we are VERY GOOD….. have been for years…
therefore…
THEY ARE NOT OUR RIVALS…
Manchester United are rivals… we compete with them for the title every year…..
December 29th, 2003 at 9:40 pm
Yeah, this is the reasoning which causes me some trepidation. I hate Sp*rs so much more than United, but would rather see United get relegated so as to preserve the derby. It reminds me of the debate in Pittsburgh when the Browns left Cleveland. Some thought it was great, while a lot of the old school fans who had seen many of the wars of the ’70s and ’80s knew something would be missing from the season. When they finally came back and the Steelers rolled over them in their first game, there was almost a sense of normalcy returned. I feel the same way here. It just wouldn’t be the same, although I know from talking to Kelvin and others that the rivalry with Sp*rs is much bigger to them than it is to us.
December 29th, 2003 at 9:45 pm
DEFINE RIVAL!
plain and simple…
there has to be competitive play between the teams… I have supported Arsenal for over 10 years…. I have been to Highbury many times… I have been to London for long periods of time…
Spurs have not been anything in all that time…
other than mired in mediocrity or worse…
we… have challenged for the title… year in… year out…
where’s the competition?
maybe 15 years ago…..
maybe 20 years ago…..
but not now…… they are not a rival…
they are a neighbor that also plays football down the road… and yes…..I know the name of “that road”…..
Celtics v.Lakers WAS A RIVALRY….. it is not any more…
RedSox v.Yankess IS A RIVALRY….. they are both good competitive teams…..
does that make sense?
If Spurs go down….. I suppose they’d still be our rivals in your eyes???
21st Century….. nuff’ said
December 29th, 2003 at 9:48 pm
I think you’ve got “rival” mixed up with “competitor”. A competitor is the person you are in the most direct competition with. In this case, it’s United because they’re competing with us for the title. But if they sucked, they would be no different than Leeds or Blackburn: just another match on the fixture list. A rival, on the other hand, is someone who you’ve had a long running feud with over the years. Rivalry games are ones where the records don’t matter. The teams hate each other, the supporters hate each other, and even the grounds crews hate each other. A rivalry is bigger than records, bigger than trophies won, and bigger than difference in class (we’re better in all, btw). Sure, a rivalry is better when both teams are good. But it’s still the biggest game of the year, even when one squad or both is not up to snuff.
December 29th, 2003 at 9:50 pm
GET REAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!
because I don’t consider Tottenham a serious rival
means I am not an ARSENAL supporter?
what gives YOU the divine right to determine if I am “worthy” in your mind of being a supporter??
You don’t know anything about me….. or how long I have supported Arsenal…… or how many times I have travelled across the world to see them play….
who says YOU are REALLY a supporter??!
get real…… and get off your high horse…..
YOU DON’T DETERMINE WHO IS AN ARSENAL SUPPORTER and WHO ISN’T … and… YOU DON’T DETERMINE WHO IS ARSENAL’s RIVAL… its purely opinion…….. and I am certainly entitled to give mine…… without you inferring that I don’t know anything about Arsenal….. or football….
get over yourself….. its supposed to be football….and fun…..
December 29th, 2003 at 9:52 pm
we’re talking about OPINION……and the definition of rival….. and rivalry at this point…
because Spurs were a rival many years ago… doesn’t mean they always have to be … Chelsea could easily supplant them…
December 29th, 2003 at 10:13 pm
Yes you have the right to your opinon and freedom of speech but there are somethings you cant change..
Unless you dont understand the pride of football. Go into any Pub in london and asked who are Arsenal rivals and you will be told..
Football and not soccer… We are not Hooligans but drink, eat, dream, and think football.. Is in the blood and born with the passion of our team..
To all those would be Arsenal fan and not Gunners..
If you think Spursz is not Arsenal rival I guess you are supporting the wrong team period.. And to say you have being to london or highbury lots of times was just to watch a good teams and not to support them…
Asked any Man United fans and they will tell you the same thing. United see Arsenal as a Title rival and that is it..
United rivals are Man City…
Liverpool rivals Everton etc…
Why do the Media refer to Spurz of living in the Shadows of Arsenal….Their great Rival..
Please if you dont know asked..
They same way I am learning America Football
December 29th, 2003 at 10:37 pm
Hmmmm..
I read somewhere to define rival and 21st Century..
What had that got to do with the fact that Arsenal Rivals are Spursz.. Where have you being since joining Arsenal…
Well if you support Arsenal and thinks Man United are our rivals than you are in a wrong team..
Called Mr Wenger up and he might help you as a French teacher.. Or go to seven sister station and asked the station master who is Arsenal rival..
December 29th, 2003 at 11:25 pm
To me playing those t#ssers is just another game! I consider Chelsea and the manure our local derbies more than us playing the N17 trash!
They deserve everything what’s coming to them! They call themselves a big club….yet they have failed to win the league for nearly 43 years!
They lack ambition as they have admitted on numerous occasions that if they lost 36 games in a season as long as they beat us home and away that would be considered a successful season in their books! That’s fine by me as that would mean that they’d get relegated with just 6 POINTS to their name!
They suffer from this inferiority complex, because we invaded their “turf” when we moved from Woolwich to Highbury!
They are still narked by the fact they got relegated when they finished above the relegation zone in 1919, so that we could be promoted in their place to the old first division (even though we finished 5th in the old second division)! Talk about having a bee in your bonnet:)lol btw…best decision that the Football League ever made:)lol
In a nutshell, this is one Gooner who won’t be shedding a tear if our scum neigbours go down…..I tell a lie……I’ll be shedding tears….OF LAUGHTER when it happens. Just like when it happened in 1977:) Does anyone else remember that?
December 29th, 2003 at 11:29 pm
Look on the bright side mate. We wouldn’t have to be tortured by their cr@ppy Chas n’ Dave cup final songs anymore if they went down:)lol
December 29th, 2003 at 11:32 pm
I remember when they got relegated in 1977. I was in a conga line of Gooners dancing outside Arsenal tube station celebrating the event!:)lol
December 29th, 2003 at 11:33 pm
Sp*rs are guaranteed two cup finals every season………WHEN THEY PLAY US!
December 29th, 2003 at 11:35 pm
Well said mate;)
December 29th, 2003 at 11:37 pm
They’re so cr@p….that a Subbuteo team could beat them!:)lol
December 29th, 2003 at 11:40 pm
They are only rivals in the sense that they are three miles down the road from Highbury. But in footballing terms….they couldn’t beat Barnet or Enfield (who also hail from the same area) let alone us!
December 29th, 2003 at 11:41 pm
HERE! HERE!
December 29th, 2003 at 11:45 pm
The only ones who care about this game are Spertz themselves as its their cup final when they play us! To us it’s just another tedium affair! Chelsea and the Manure are more important than playing those losers from N17!
December 29th, 2003 at 11:46 pm
A bag of peanuts could supplant Spertz:)lol
December 29th, 2003 at 11:48 pm
I disagree….Spertz, Leeds and Wolves will go down.
December 29th, 2003 at 11:53 pm
I’ve witnessed many North London derbies in person. Most notably when we turned them over 5-0 at the Lane at Christmas time 25 years ago with that blinding goal by Chippy being shown on Match of the Day every week for the next three years. In saying that, Spertz inability to match us in regards to league titles and Champions League appearances has made the fixture a non-event for me.
December 29th, 2003 at 11:58 pm
What are you getting at???? Just because there are Arsenal fans who don’t agree with you, what gives you the right to take a pop at them????
December 30th, 2003 at 12:02 am
I agree with what you say. Everyone is entitled to an opinion. After all this is what this forum is all about…..Airing one’s views.
December 30th, 2003 at 12:07 am
You just summed everything up in that last sentence of yours………..the rivalry with Sp*rs is much bigger to them than it is to us.
Because of their inablity to match us in all aspects of football, the games we have with them are about on the same level as if we were playing Wolves or Leicester.
Only their pathetic fans make it into a cup final!
December 30th, 2003 at 12:11 am
Like I said all along….Spertz haven’t won the league for 43 years, yet claim to be a big club! That statement alone makes them nothing more than a mickey mouse outfit! I for one will not miss the to$$ers when they go down to the Nationwide!
December 30th, 2003 at 12:23 am
I’ve been an Arsenal fan for 35 years! I stood regularly on the North Bank between 1968-1991 before I emmigrated to the U.S! I’ve witnessed many great North London derbies during them years. What you don’t understand is that although Spertz are 3 miles down the Seven Sisters Road from us, they’ll never achieve what we have done in the last 20 odd years….4 LEAGUE TITLES, 2 DOUBLES, 4 FA CUPS, 1 CUP WINNERS CUP, 2 LEAGUE CUPS, 3 CHARITY SHIELDS!
What have they won over the same period???? 1 FA CUP AND 1 LEAGUE CUP! That just shows the gulf between the two of us! Until they narrow the gap, the North London derby means sweet FA to me! It may mean alot to the pratts who follow the N17 trash, but I get more hyped up when we play Chelsea or United than when we play Spertz!
In fact, Arsene Wenger himself said he recognised that Chelsea was more of a local derby than Spertz!
December 30th, 2003 at 12:25 am
Someone needs lessons in Hooked on Phonics….btw Arsene Wenger himself said that Chelsea was more of a local derby than Spertz!!!
December 30th, 2003 at 12:04 pm
Please…
do me a favor and get back to reality…
I don’t care if you live in London and never missed a match in the past 50 years… it doesn’t make you any more of an Arsenal supporter than me… or anyone else for that matter…
I don’t see Tottenham as a rival in any sense… if you do… more power to you… but don’t give me this RUBBISH that my opinion is less important than yours because you don’t agree with it… or that YOU believe I support the wrong team because I don’t agree with you…
ITS NON-SENSE…
December 30th, 2003 at 12:17 pm
Just because “YOU” say its so… doesn’t make it true…
You can give YOUR OPINION on anything you wish… it doesn’t make it fact…
just like you saying that I am not an Arsenal supporter because I don’t agree with you in saying Spurs are our rivals… is MEANINGLESS…
RIVAL: one who attempts to pass or equal another, or who pursues the same object as another, competitor
Their goals are not the same as ours…
they are attempting every year to SURVIVE in the Premiership… not win the league… its not possible for them to win the league…
they are NOT A COMPETITOR with Arsenal…
get over it!!!!!!!!!!!!
