All the papers are reporting about the “wild outburst of rage” exhibited by Lehmann at the end of the match. He threw the ball at Kevin Phillips, big deal. How about Phillips who, after being cautioned, stamped on Lehmann’s foot. No, no mention of that.

“Retaliation” is always the easiest way to get in trouble. Doesn’t matter if a player reacts to a really nasty challenge or not - most referees will give someone a red card for even the slightest retaliation. Arsenal players need to learn to control this because the Premiership is full of players that wind others up (i.e. the Dennis Wise’s and Robbie Savage’s of the league). Arsenal players seem to always go take the bait and strike back, earning them either a red card or FA disciplinaryl review!
Lehman will probably get more punishment than he deserves but he’s got to expect it. 1) He plays for Arsenal - 2) He’s German - 3) He retaliated after the final whistle. Just stupid! (Yes, this is different than yelling at someone after the final whistle.)

Rick, youwrote a piece earlier about the media not liking Arsenal’s foreign players. In this case that IS a factor. Do you really think the foot-stamping would be overlooked so much if Lehmann had stamped on Phillips foot, and that Phillips would be on the dock if he later threw the ball at Lehmann. I rather doubt it…
