Wenger going Green? Postings On Arsenal America
Sep 19

[adapted from my LiveJournal entry tonight...]

So I’m at work earlier tonight (and boy has IT been Hell on Earth lately. Sheesh) and I see someone walking down the produciton floor wearing something very familiar yet strange. A blue shirt with a huge white O2 on it. Holy shit, it’s an Arsenal shirt!

As he gets closer I say something to him, and notice that it’s a really BAD BAD bootleg shirt. Like, the proportions are off, and the crest is the new shield, but the old font saying “Arsenal” and the cannon is like nothing I’ve seen before ever.

Regardless, I talked with the guy. An African immigrant, he mentions he’s seen me wearing my Freddie Ljungberg shirt. “You are Gunner?” Well Hell yes, I say. He said he never sees any other Gunners anywhere here in Indy. That’s funny, I mention, there’s a woman originally from Zambia who I talk to a bit, she too likes the Arsenal. And then there’s the guy here in town I met through here. So we’re out there, somewhere.

What was the point of this? I don’t know. Just thought it was cool, and I needed a bit of coolness to happen today. Perfect timing.

Haven’t experienced any unexpected Gooner sightings, lately, but have converted my fair share recently. :^/

Wow, from a summer running amuck over the transfer protocol and nearly stealing our skipper to join his brilliant GalactiWOES, to this. Next up…Mourinho quits, blaming his astrological chart, Wenger’s grandmother, and the price of tea in China for dropping points.

Here is another story for you - I am at my sons soccer game with a friend who is also a Gunner fan and then I see a 12 year old wearing a blue jersey and later I see another kid with the full kit. I have never ever seen anybody outside of my friend wear anything with an Arsenal logo.

The tide is begining to turn.

Unexpected Gooner sightings, I think these have been mentioned before but it’s worth mentioning again.

    1. British forces in Basra, Iraq arranged a match with the local team and the captain of the Iraqi side wore an Arsenal shirt.

    2. As the people of Serbia stormed the parliament building a revolutionary was clearly seen wearing an arsenal jacket.

    3. A new one this, I regularly travel to Cyprus and had arranged to give Vasos (the Cypriot equivalent of Rick/Andrew) the yellow away shirt. He coudln’t make it to Paphos so I drove with some locals to Larnaca airport where he works dropping off and picking up hire cars for tourists. I asked why his staff wore Arsenal shirts. He replied “all year sc*m and chelski fans look forward to their holiday. The first Cypriot they meet is me and I like to remind them we are the best”.

THESE ARE MARADONAS WORDS ABOUT ARSENAL
    THE GREAT MAN SPEAKS………
Argentine legend Diego Maradona has written off Real Madrid and claims Arsenal are the best team in Europe.

“The Galacticos aren’t more than a band of stray dogs,” Maradona said as he left for Cuba, where he is to continue his treatment to recover from drug addiction.

After watching Real’s Champions League defeat by Bayer Leverkusen, he said: “I felt embarrassed watching them. Roberto Carlos didn’t know what was he doing on the pitch and Beckham was just looking for the flashes. All of them just wanted the match to finish. That’s not football.”

Maradona recommended that the Spanish team sign Argentine midfielder Javier Mascherano.

“He’s a monster, with him Real Madrid would be a real team.”

The World Cup-winning skipper added: “I do like Arsenal a lot, they’re the best in Europe and Thierry Henry is a “Maradonian” player.

I believed he complained about the amount of French players, saying something like there would be more of a smell of garlic then liniment coming from the locker. Don’t make the association myself, but from the other quotes I read he seemed a real character and legend of the game.

    RIP, Mr. Clough.

  11. ScottyUS Says:

Part of what made Maradona so interesting was his inflated ego and indomitable arrogance, evidenced here by having the gall to say he was embarassed with anyone but himself. That and his unbelievable, Henryesque skill. But hey, high praise is high praise.

Makes me wonder how long before we’re RIP’ing Diego himself. Honestly, I hope he’s doing well.

When I started wearing my Arsenal shirt publicly in America, I’d hear the occasional British accented “Up the Arsenal!” or “F**k off Arsenal” yelled at me in cars or passing me by on the sidewalk. A lot of times it was just a Brit who mistook me for a fellow Brit and even though I was American was glad to at least meet someone who followed football. One such guy was a Fulham fan on the beach.
I’ve been in the International flights area of my local airport with my shirt on when traveling and all sorts of folks from all over the world have padded me on the back or arm and point to the crest and they didn’t speak a word of english and give the thumbs up sign.
