Arsenal v. Bayern Munich. Hmmm, not a walk in the park, but I don’t feel BM are some unstoppable behemoth either. Arsenal have the advantage of playing the second leg at home, so the key will be to grab a goal or two in the away leg.

My first reaction is…. OH MY GOD!
Chelsea have drawn Barcelona, and Man Untd have drawn AC Milan!
Well… at least they’ll both be able to concentrate on the English Premier League a bit earlier!

God is a Gunner and this is the YEAR.. 2 months is a long way in football and hope by then Arsenal will be back to their best.
Is all going to be about defence but am very happy knowing by the time we finish off BM 3 of the tops sides will be out.

Bayern wont be a pushover but we should be favorites. The rest of the draw could not have gone better for the Arsenal.

Well, personally I wanted Real Madrid, Porto or Werder Bremen in that order.
Bayern Munich are a tough team, particularly for us. Being German they will be well organised, very tight at the back, and very frustrating to play against. They also score a scary amount of goals from crosses corners and free kicks. I think it will be crucial to get at least a goal in the first leg, but then we all know that we can score against any team on our day.
The one saving grace may ironically be that Kahn could prove to be their weakest link.
Having said all that, they cant be at all pleased at having drawn us & at least we didn?t get Barcelona.

I fail to see how this draw could have gone any better for Arsenal. When I saw the lineup I practically had a “Matrix” moment when I saw the future - and it was *GOOD*!!!

Well… I believe that if we don’t sort out our defensive issues & on set-pieces, we could have drawn just about anyone in the final 16, and we’d be in major trouble. It all comes down to playing better defensively, AND fixing the set-piece problem. If that gets done, we can win the CL.

Terrific draw. But let’s get it straight right now…who’s marking Roy Makaay??? Ballack is a monster, but there should be a tattoo of Makaay inside of the eyelids of every single Arsenal defensemen. Not big, but strong in the air.
I’ve been forced to look at our season this way: Arsenal vs. Arsenal, and so far we win when we HAVE TO. If we’re reasonably healthy, I think we’re going to cut through to the semi’s. From there, it’ll be about luck and heart, as we’re as good as any team.

I’m amazed at the euphoria. Bayern are hard, and Thierry has said in previous years that they’re the team we least want to draw. They - Bayern, that is - are definitely starting as favourites, and the stats make it clear why. They’re strong defensively, and against weak defences - e.g. us, e.g. Ajax, whom they trounced 4 and 5-nil - they can score. They had one of the most impressive goal differences in the knock-out rounds - the same as Milan’s and better than Barca’s.
Predictions: I think Juve, Inter and Milan are definites to go through. Liverpool have the easiest draw, so I’d bet on them too, but only if they buy a decent striker. The other ties look tighter: I’ve a hunch Bremen and PSV will shade it, and I really hope Barca will too: my heart says Barca; they’re more talented than Chelsea by a million miles; but my head says Chelsea (because they’re more efficient and because of the size of their squad). Barca already look to be suffering from tiredness.
Us? If we buy an excellent keeper and defender, yes; otherwise no. Simple as that, I should think.
Toldo would be wonderful, like a miracle, but I don’t believe the rumours that we’re after him. We can’t play Lehmann. He’s a lunatic, even on quiet days. Can you imagine him with Kahn at the other end of the pitch? He’d turn into a werewolf. It would not be a nice sight.
Ledley King? The more I think about this, the more I like the idea: he’s solid, he’s versatile (he can play as a holding midfielder if needed); he’s good at defending set pieces; he even scores from them every now and again.. Also, he won’t need a long adaptation period as he’s already trained with or played with Ashley and Sol. If we’re losing Edu and Lauren, as looks more and more likely, he might be a good buy.

I guess I am regularly amazed at the glass half-empty mentality I see here regularly.
EVERYONE is hard at this point, not just Bayern Munich.
You see Chelsea being able to take out Barcelona, yet unless we buy an excellent keeper and defender, we are out?
THAT’s A JOKE.
We could play our current team and beat Bayern Munich 7 out of 10.
We could play ANY TEAM IN THE WORLD and beat them… simply by playing better against set-pieces.
Why is that so hard to accept or believe?
Who would Ledley King be playing over? How tall is he? I just doubt he’d start regularly over anyone on our team…. perhaps he could platoon.
Edu is not gone, and neither is Lauren.
These are simple rumors, and Lauren couldn’t play for Real Madrid in the CL… what use is he til next season?
GOOD DRAW… we do not face Juventus, AC Milan or Barcelona… they are currently the top teams in the world. Guess what… so are we!

Bayern president Rummenigge has just been featured in an article on soccernet.com. It concerns HIS concerns over playing English teams, as their club has a very disappointing record agains them.

That being said, The Arsenal are not exactly the most English team in the EPL, in my opinion. But I have to believe that we can beat anyone if 50% give 100% and we don’t lose concentration. We have what no other team has…the FOURTH place Ballon D’Or winner! ;^)

interesting comments on one of their sites (fcbayern.t-com.de, if you read German). They like the draw and think it’s going to be close, though, since German teams tend to do well against English ones, they say the omens are good. One person rates their chances as 50/50r. Mackay says they’ll definitely go through; someone else points out we have the best attack in Europe; Owen Hargraves says we have the best fans; Oliver Kahn says what you’d expect him to say. Unsurprisingly, the Kahn-Lehmann confrontation is prominent.

I half share your optimism.
But for the record I think Ledly king is a very tidy player who could solve a lot of potential problems for us.
He?s young, but level headed with a good fighting spirit. He also passes the ball very well, is left footed and quick, a typical Wenger player. He also plays several positions. He can partner Viera if we have another midfield crisis, or if Edu leaves and Gilbertos injury proves very serious; he provides cover if Toure or Campbell get injured, and he frees Toure to play on the right if Lauren is injured or leaves. He may even replace Toure as first choice centre back.
All in all I think he is an attractive proposition.

Yes, that’s exactly what I think about King, though I admit I don’t know that much about possible alternatives from outside the EPL. On Lauren: he says he wants to stay but we are only offering him a two-year contract when he’s asking for four. As he’s still young and Barca want him badly, it’s looking likely he’ll go - on a free unfortunately if we wait till the end of the season. Edu, however, is not saying he’d like to stay - quite the reverse. He seems to me to be behaving stupidly and boastfully, not to mention ungratefully, so I won’t be that sorry to see him go.

I’ve been really disappointed in Edu’s behavior too. He really seems to have let that good stretch of form he had last year swell his head to bursting. I was one of his biggest supporters too, as it looked like he had “arrived” as they say. He hasn’t come anywhere near to duplicating that form for a considerable time though. Very sad.

Personally, only Bremen would have been a better draw. We lucked out. Not even Porto I’d want. They play all 90 minutes, can head and can dive and con the refs.
No team is a push over now, but considering, we got a good draw.
When we lost to them last time we played awful in Munich and lost 1-0. We also were beating them 2-0 at home and let them back in the game. That BM side was better than this one. We’re better than that Arsenal side.
We’ll do okay. We’ll have our defense sorted out by that time.

King is 6ft 2in tall. He is commanding in the air and assured on the ground. He is fast and difficult to beat one on one. He will become an even better central defender playing alongside Campbell. I hope Wenger goes for him soon.
I agree that this is a good draw considering we are not facing teams like AC or Juventus. But BM is very strong from setpieces with a few of their players very strong in the air. If Arsenal continue to defend the way we have from setpieces, BM will just play for corners and freekicks and we will be looking at 2-0 or 3-0 scorelines in favour of the Germans. Hopefully Wenger truly sort out the defensive problems soon.

One thing I hadn’t htought about that Wenger mentioned on Sky that has me a little concerned is the fact that we’ll be playing BM right after their Winter break. He mentioned having to work on our form so that its strong at that time, or its going to be extra tough.
Surely the Winter break gives German teams an advantage when it comes to fitness. However, form may be somewhat slack.

I say sell Edu and recover at least that 6m pound Wenger paid for him. I am sure either Real ot Barca can afford him. I am really annoyed with all the noise he is making. Ungrateful b******.
