Just heard from Kelvin who’s with the other 3600 Gooners in Munich for the CL match. They’re in a Beer Keller conducting a mullet search. So far they’ve seen 15, all wearing jean jackets complete with Status Quo badges!
Keep the faith.

Soccernet.com has Gamecast with text. No audio that I can find, unless you’re on a PC and hooked up with freelivefootball.co.uk.

Not sure if this will be available in the US, but BBC Radio London is broadcasting the game. Go to http://www.bbc.co.uk/london/sport/sportshow/midweek.shtml and use the listen live link.

Rumour is Freddie is playing up front with Thierry. Great, I think. No news on Ash yet. It’s very cold, deep snow, minus 10 - which I guess will hurt us more than them, Toure and Reyes especially as they probably won’t have experienced it before. How does it affect the pitch? Maybe it depends how long the under-soil heaters have been on? The ref is the Dane, Nielsen.Don’t remember whether we’ve got a good/bad history with him?
I am keeping the faith. Am about to sell Ronaldinho from my CL dreamteam and buy Freddie. We’ve got the quality, except perhaps in defence. I think we need to score quite a few as we mostly do better away than at home.

This from Eurosport’s commentary:
60′? ? Arsenal are just terrible. No control. No passing. No confidence. Nothing. They never learn from their mistakes. Wenger never learns from his. The defence is shambolic. And defeat tonight a certainty. Bring on next season, because this one’s well and truly over.
This is actually hateful, I think. Unbelievable.
February 22nd, 2005 at 4:16 pm
They can defend. We can’t. Not much more to say sadly. We’re not going to win 4-0 at home. I’ve come home at halftime - more to do with the pub I was trying to watch in than the way we were playing, but it’s really depressing. I’m now pacing the kitchen and listening on the radio

I guess Edu’s hamstring wrecked our chances. Among other things. He never looked fit, though there was a point when we were playing well, better than them, I thought. But if we give away goals like that there’s no hope at all. Yup roll on August and let’s buy two decent defenders and a keeper. At a minimum.
February 22nd, 2005 at 4:29 pm
83′ Ashley Cole comes on for Gael Clichy. Cole presumably dreaming of playing in a tight team next season for Chelsea… maybe he might stand a chance of winning in Europe?
Can you believe this crap?
February 22nd, 2005 at 4:34 pm
Well, well, well, Toure’s attoned for his diaster! But too little too late I guess. In fairness to Jens it sounds as though he did OK? Liverpool 3 up - I can’t believe it.
February 22nd, 2005 at 4:44 pm
We’re not going to win 4-0, but we sure can win 2-0, though given our record with clean sheets, I won’t bet the farm on it. Kolo’s goal was a huge difference.
February 22nd, 2005 at 4:50 pm
we are in the soup now.
but please…
save your woe…. and cry-baby-soup commentary…
We need to win by 2 goals at home.
2-0 and we advance… 3-1… and its game on.
Its POSSIBLE. If you don’t think we can win by 2 at home… your crazy.
If the Arsenal CAN’T WIN by 2 goals at home… they don’t deserve to advance.
We have a CHANCE. After being down 3-0… at least we salvaged some hope. Toure OWED it. He was responsible for 2 goals, and Lehmann the other.
February 22nd, 2005 at 5:03 pm
Yes, it’s possible with Dennis, Ashley and Sol and - I very much hope - a fully match-fit Edu. What’s odd about this year is the way half the good teams are going to be out by the next round: Chelsea and Milan most obviously (I’d guess) because they’ve got injuries to key players at the worst possible time. Probably Real will go to.
February 22nd, 2005 at 5:03 pm
I don’t doubt our ability to score two. Our ability to keep a clean sheet is what I question. I didn’t see the game, but barely a decent chance on goal? Says a lot for having a team that can float the ball in and take their chances, but I guess we’re not built for that.
Wonder if Wenger’s not having his players train on the pitch in advance makes sense? They’ll have spies, but so what? Everyone knows how we play.
Anyway I think its still open. 3-0 would have been too much to erase, but 3-1 is quite doable.
February 22nd, 2005 at 5:14 pm
Real won!
so Juve have to overturn a deficit. If Real score a goal, Juve will need 3. I like Real’s chances.
Its WIDE OPEN. Just like last season. Liverpool look good to advance, but they also gave up an injury time goal that could HAUNT them.
We know either AC Milan or United… We know either Barca or Chelsea… great match-ups with some good teams exiting.
We NEED all our stars to play. We NEED ALL OUR STARS TO SHINE. Sol, Ash… Henry, Bergkamp… we need our team to play their best. PERIOD.
The best teams rise to the occasion. An early goal would give us the life-line we need. The longer it goes without us scoring in Matchday 2… the less likely it will occur.
POSSIBLE …. I say YES.
A little Bergkamp magic. Sol Campbell and Ash at the back… lets hope the dream doesn’t die at Highbury without a spirited fight and effort.

one thing hasn’t changed since 2001, that goddamn munich pitch, not the quality but the dimensions. the camera angle makes it look about 10 yards wide.
the game did not surprise me in the slightest. said bac in december we should get rid of toure, lauren, vieira. now vieira has won a reprieve from me, even though his lack of inspiration when the going gets tough is all too apparent, noticable after third goal.(however can’t blame him playing in front of that defence).
but toure and lauren simply not good enough. i feel sorry for toure because he tries hard but he simply can’t win a header. i felt happy for him scoring the goal though.
we’ve got the ability to beat bayern 5-0 in the return but hey this is the champions league so expect a typically frustrating game
February 22nd, 2005 at 5:41 pm
After watching that performance it’s clear that we’re just not good enough. We need to spend big money this summer on a defender or 2 and a keeper. The goal gives us a chance and when you think about it 3-1 is better than 2-0 but with our defensive record what’s the chances of us keeping a clean sheet in the return game. We’re not done yet and I’ll be cheering to the end but we’re hanging by a thread.
February 22nd, 2005 at 5:52 pm
It’s time for Arsenal to open the coffers and spend some money. Do it now…go ahead and start building some chemistry. Perhaps salvage the FA Cup for this year.
The defense needs some backbone, especially if Ashley Cole ends up leaving.

I like your optimism and never-say-die attitude but to think that our boys are going to keep a clean sheet in the 2nd leg is really wishful thinking. Coupled with our shaky defence and BM potent strikeforce, the writing is on the wall. The trend has been there since the start of the season. With Ballack back, I expect BM to be even stronger and score at least one goal at Highbury. BM looks very well organized defensively - it will be tough even for an in-form Bergkamp to find the holes.
Hopefully Wenger will use the off season to fix the defensive problems with the funds promised to him.
February 22nd, 2005 at 6:11 pm
Arsenal has too many un-natural defenders and at times it shows. Kolo & Lauren are midfielders, converted. They defend well, they seldom get beat one on one, but lose concentration too easily, mistakes you seldom see people like Terry making. Even Ashley Cole started as a striker. Maybe its the price you pay for a team that leads in number of goals scored year after year. We do need good solid defenders and a solid goal keeper. I’d sell Cygan and use Kolo as backup, or let him and a presumably better signing fight for their place. As for Lauren he’s clearly not the face of the future.
Don’t know what’s up with Europe. It’s like the players take turns in making silly mistakes.
February 22nd, 2005 at 7:00 pm
Damn, why didn’t I put money on 3-1 Bayern, that’s exactly the score I predicted.
Usually in the Champions League I get butterflies in my stomach before a big match like this, but tonight - nothing! Defeat was inevitable, I didn’t even blink when their first goal went in.
This performance was utterly predictable. Wenger says it was our worst performance in Europe, I disagree. It’s quite simple, we’re NOT GOOD ENOUGH!! No matter how well we played we would not have won tonight, because Arsenal are incapable of raising the bar in Europe.
The whole back 5 is inept, and that includes Toure. Toure has been a shambles this season, without Campbell he is completely lost. So what does that mean? It means we need 2 Centre Backs in the summer, not just one. We also need a new right back, because Lauren has never been good enough at this level. A new Goalkeeper goes without saying.
If Wenger doesn’t make the right moves in the summer, I will start to lose all faith in him. Not that I don’t appreciate the incredible job he’s done, but I now admit that he is deeply flawed and is incapable of taking Arsenal to the very top level.
Tactically Arsenal are a joke. George Graham would probably have won us the Champions League by now, with a team half as talented. Set piece goals would be eradicated. It’s no longer just the bad players, it’s Wenger too, he’s clueless on set pieces, both for and against. Arsenal were never going to win tonight, no matter what they did. They’re simply not up to the job. Only new players will change it,and quite a few of them, the squad has gone as far as it can.
February 22nd, 2005 at 7:45 pm
Wenger is a soccer purist, but sometimes it seems he lacks tactical nous when our system is stymied. Too much shakiness at the back, something needs to be fixed. Anyway all is not lost, let’s wait till the next leg. Even more dissapointing when you see an injury ravaged L’Pool winning 3-1. Think the reason why so many will have so little confidence is the simple fact that we don’t quite seem to grasp the concept of keeping clean sheets…

February 22nd, 2005 at 8:52 pm
Wenger said after the game that he was disappointed with the team’s response. What worried me most was his comment that he does not know why the team failed to deliver and why the defending was so poor. If le Professor himself is lost, what can we poor fans do but maybe pray for divine intervention.
February 22nd, 2005 at 11:42 pm
Jose…..
I AM optimistic. Hard not to be when you see what we can do on the pitch. With the amount of talent we possess, turning over a 3-1 deficit is possible against ANY TEAM ON EARTH!
yes, Ballack might be back.
So will Campbell AND Cole. So that obviously helps defensively. Bergy is back in the line-up as well, and we ALL KNOW he can have a major impact on how we play offensively.
I believe it can be done. Obviously, its not going to be easy. But if we can score an early goal… WATCH OUT. We might storm the fort.
February 22nd, 2005 at 11:44 pm
Alot of what you say is correct.
But GG is not close to the coach Wenger is.
February 23rd, 2005 at 8:29 am
Wenger’s gambled away our CL chances by refusing to buy into the value of experience, overpriced or not. I don’t think its rocket science to defend. You just need to have the guts and concentration. The comment that all of our defenders are converted midfielders and strikers was a good one. Wenger thought he could create a dynasty with a team of scorers, and he darn well nearly did.
Hopefully he’ll realize that he needs a mix, even if the deals he needs to make make him wince. Even ONE classic defender would have brought us a great deal more success this year.
