Arsenal v. Soton Post-Mortem Continued FA Cup Discussion- Sheffield United
Feb 28

I have watched Stuart Taylor almost every game when he played, surely can’t recall there were so many mistakes he had made like some have suggested. Taylor played 1/3 of our 2002 double winning campaign, with Seaman troubled by injury all season, and Richard Wright hardly impressed, if Taylor was that crap, we wouldn’t be able to win the double.

When someone wants to pick on a ‘keeper’s mistakes, it’s easy, ‘cos EVERY keeper made mistakes, even Schmeichel and Seaman.

I don’t know how good a keeper Taylor really is, but in the wake of some shaky performance from our first and second choice keeper, it’s only FAIR that young Taylor would get a run of first team chance to show us what he can do. I do not agree with the idea of playing an inexperience keeper. But it depends on different circumstances. Since Lehmann and Almunia have been struggling, we really have nothing to lose to give the young Taylor at least a CHANCE.

To the worst he would let us down like Lehmann and Almunia did, but what if he goes on to prove himself that he can get the job done? It may as well go on and save us a few million pounds from getting ourselves a new keeper, and save our money on buying ourselves a solid defender, in my opinion this is the area we need help MOST.

Once again, when we are talking about buying who and who, let’s don’t forget the bottom line -we are no Chelsea nor Real Madrid.

Lastly, on the reason why I feel Taylor DESERVES at least a chance. Taylor is a keeper highly rated by our former goalkeeper coach Bob Wilson, who’s the mentor of David Seaman, and Wilson himself was one of our lengdary goalkeepers. Wilson felt Taylor was good enough to take over from Seaman, yet over the years, Wenger had brought in Manninger, Richard Wright, Shabban, Lehmann, Almunia in an attempt to fill into the glove Seaman left behind. All came, all failed. While Taylor been waiting on the wing patiently depsite all the knock backs when each of the new keeper being brought in. Clearly here is a young man, he is developed by Arsenal Football Club and he WANTS to play for Arsenal Football Club.

Wenger should pick Stuart. He’s a lousy judge of goalkeepers and should let those who know do the job. Bob Wilson said Stuart was technically one of the best he’d ever seen. Like I say nobody can say Stuart made as many hapless mistakes as Lehmann/Almunia. Okay, maybe he made a few (can’t recall any to be honest), but didn’t Cech make one yesterday? When mistakes become the story of your life, then that’s another matter. He should get his chance, starting tomorrow.

It’s things like this about Wenger I can’t understand. How do you drop Stuart a keeper with a CL experience - and he didn’t do a bad job - for someone like Almunia who in his long career has done nothing but warm benches? Reason why many say rightly or wrongly, he has a thing against English players. If Wenger had been buying the likes of Casillas and Cech and benched Stuart, we would understand. But he bought Rami Shabban who last I checked was tending the sticks for West Ham and now Almunia. Everyone he buys with even no reputation, goes ahead in the queue. All the poor boy did was get injured, and now he’s back he deserves a chance, especially when those ahead of him are so lousy.

Yes, we are no Chelsea or Real Madrid but that doesn’t mean we should just buy crap..

Before PR joined spurs most fans like me were begging for Wenger to sign Paul Robinson but signed some Spa**h bloke called Almunia. Yes Almunia cost almost the same as PR. And the sad thing is Taylor is better than both Lemon and Almunia and I have been saying this for a long time.

And to stagg, Pls let talk about football here and nothing to do with being British. Remember when I said we should buy King and Defoe. It was nothing to do with them being English but footballing common sense. Instead of buying 5 kids for 2 million each why don’t we buy someone for 10 million who can get the job done. Still waiting to hear from anyone who say Reyes and Persie better than Pennant

To be honest you can’t be Champions one season and play like sh&t the next.

Leaves on the line… is a pathetic excuses you hear but British Rail forgets Autumn comes every year.

Anyway .. It might sound funny but Arsenal FC are looking for 11 fits guys with no passion for tomorrow.. It you speaks a bit will help.

I’d like to see Taylor get a legitimate chance in goal. Not a game… but 5. Almunia got his group of matches. Taylor should get the same. If he doesn’t pan out, on to the next plan. He can’t be worse than Almunia and Lehmann has used up all his chances.

Love_G… Pennant wore out his welcome. His off field non-sense haunts him. He is no better than VanP or Reyes, and they don’t crash cars. Good Luck to Pennant… I hope he straightens himself out. We don’t need him and his distracting behavior.

    King & Defoe.
If you don’t like the way Wenger buys foreign players… oh well. He is the boss. He makes the decisions. You will be upset about this for as long as he is here. He stated that he wants to WIN. He doesn’t care about nationality. He will field his BEST 11 regardless.
Those fans who don’t like it will just have to accept it. Either that or try and get him sacked. He will continue to do what he feels is best for the AFC. I have no problem with it at all. I want the best players regardless of their background/nationality. He won’t overpay for British players. Nor should he.

  4. DannyT Says:

You have to give Taylor his chance, there is no worth in playing Lehmann or Almunia again, because the season is a virtual write off and neither should be at Arsenal next season - if they are, then Wenger should be sacked.

  5. love_Gunners Says:

Like you I want the best players playing for Arsenal and don’t care whether they are British or Not, but when I talk about King or Defoe we talking about guys who can get the job done not Cygan or Reyes. As Seaman said Taylor did a good job for us whiles he was out with 2 errors. Goalie have a hard job but everyone knows he is better than the Lemon and Span*h bloke

And for you information the first thing Van P did joining Arsenal was to crash a car as well. The british media were not interested about it.

  6. stag133 Says:

I liked Pennant as a player. I wish he got a fair shake. He didn’t. He messed up (again) and he is gone.

VanPersie is not really doing much for me. His attitude ON the pitch stinks. I didn’t know about his off-field antics. I would bet he is gone at season’s end too.

Cygan. Has played decently of late. He is one that Wenger erred on. He is not capable of playing in the big match for the big team. He has had his chance. He should be gone at season’s end.

Reyes will get much more of a chance. I think he deserves it. I think he could be a fantastic player.
Having said that… I would consider selling him to Real or another Spanish team for the right price.
I would LOVE to see Casillas come to Arsenal for Reyes. He is not signed long term.

I’d love to see TAYLOR play. Not sure if he will get the fair chance he deserves. Tomorrow should be interesting.

HENRY is supposedly OUT for the match.
That leaves us without a first team striker.

We are without SOL at the back.
We are without EDU, SILVA, PIRES in the middle.
We are without EVERYONE up front.

Freddie to start up front with Lupoli or Quincy?
    The middle of the pitch?
    Kolo Vieira Cesc Clichy?
    The back?
    Lauren Senderos Cygan Cole?

    Eboue? Aliadiare? Taylor?

These players will have a chance to shine.

Holding my breathe in a FA Cup match v. Sheffield United. Thats the season in a nutshell.

  7. AmericanGooner Says:

Too late to pick Taylor. Right now, the keepers are under too much pressure. If they have a bad mistake or a bad game they may be out. Seaman knew that if he had a bad game he’d be there the next game. In the ‘04 season Lehmann knew the same and despite mistakes was fairly consistent. For the remainder of the season we have to stick with one keeper so that he can play with less pressure and thinking too hard about not making a mistake instead of concentrating on his game.

I’ve always liked Taylor. If we win the game tomorrow he should be the FA cup keeper for the season and Lehman for the league and CL with Taylor as his back up.

I thought Taylor did well in the ‘03 season when Seaman was injured. I think the problem was the back line, espcially Campbell didn’t have faith in him. It was apparant. He didn’t command their respect. We were up 5-0 to Man City in ‘03 I recall and the defense simply stopped playing and gave City a goal and took Taylor’s well deserved clean sheet away.

We need to stick with one keeper for the remainder of the campaign.

  8. Mazza Says:

taylor is not good enough, he made three stupid mistakes in 2002-3 season, two of which piss me off.(carew’s second goal for valencia in champions league) but he’s no worse than lehmann or almunia.

we may as well give him a try because he may have improved and may be more mentally ready to play for arsenal, which is obviously a big part of our problem and man utd’s. as wenger said of southampton’s paul smith; “he played a fantastic game but if he played for arsenal against sheff utd we could see a different keeper.”

leicester sent him back from loan so thats worrying and he did make one horrendous error there, similar to lehmann’s on saturday, but he deserves a chance.

  9. AmericanGooner Says:

Most pundits blamed Wiltord for the Valencia goal from Carew. Wiltord lost the ball and instead of tracking back, jumped and up down and pouted on the touch line. From what I gather after watching the game, he was not blamed.
I thought he did very well in the ‘03 season and the defense let him down a lot of the times.

  10. DannyT Says:

Yes, Taylor did make a mistake, but I still blame Wiltord. If Wenger doesn’t think Taylor is good enough then why is he still at the club? If he can’t get back in now then when will he ever get one?

Taylor must be tried out NOW! Then, if he is good enough, next season he can battle it out with a new keeper. Otherwise all 3 of our keepers should be sacked in the summer.
