Well, it isn’t really news now that the U.S. will be tackling the English national team here in Chicago this Saturday (May 28, 2005).
Anyway, after checking out the official website for the tour -
and picking up a few snippets of information here and there, it turned out that England were to have a practise session at my university, the Illinois Institute of Technology!
You cannot imagine the ecstasy I felt at the oppurtunity to meet some of the players I try to emulate on the football field.
I had already learned that Beckham, Owen, Rooney and Rio Ferdinand wouldn’t be coming, but being a Gooner, I didn’t really care much for them.
The fact that I would get to meet Sol and Ashley was more than enough for me - and I did get to meet them.
The night before (Tuesday), I got out my stash of Arsenal Magazines, looking for suitable photographs to have signed. After a few minutes of searching, I discovered a few from the Young Gunners section - One of Ashley, One of Sol. I also got a mini-cone and a copy of the Arsenal matchday programme from our home game against Man City this season (thanks Uncle Femi).
I got a good night’s rest, and woke up the following morning with half-belief that I would actually get to meet the players.
I got ready, and donned an Arsenal shirt, and armed with my camera and the various objects I was able to find, I set off on what would be one of my most memorable walks to my school football (soccer, for those who would prefer) field.
THEY WERE THERE!!!!!
The first person I spotted was Michael Carrick. He was being interviewed by SKY SPORTS and FA.COM officials, then there was Steve McClaren, the England physio, Gary Lewin (also the Arsenal Physio, who eventually autographed my matchday programme).
I think I took 10-20 photographs before the full squad arrived . . . and when they did, the undisguised excitement of the fans and press was evident.
As they stepped off the bus, one-by-one, I remembered not their names, but flashes of each one of them playing for their respective clubs. Like I said before, I was ecstatic! I called almost everyone I know, I even called two of the Irish Pubs I frequented in the past (Fado and Ginger’s) to let them know of England’s arrival.
Well, so as not to bore you with what is an already long article . . . I got my cone signed by Sven Eriksson, Sol signed his picture, and Gary Lewin signed my programme.
At the end of the training session, we had pictures taken with Sven, Joe Cole and a few other players.
All-in-all, I was a happy young man . . . the only disappointment, probably due to my unnecessary shyness, was walking back to my living quarters with a plain, unsigned picture of Ashley Cole . . .

THEY CAME BACK!!!!
The squad came back the following day, this time with David James, who had missed the previous day’s training because he had just arrived from a trip to Malawi.
I got 2 signatures from Ashley Cole and another from Gary Lewin - this time on a photograph of him taken in 1979. He actually took it round and showed everybody (you can imagine how I felt)! I also got one from Sir Trevor Brooking (who I only knew as the commentator on the Winning Eleven video game). Now it is complete!

Interesting. What were Sol and Ashely like? Friendly, grumpy? Did you see the match? I heard Sol got injured and - worse - it seems to be his ankle. AGAIN. This is very bad news as it looks like it’s not healed properly even after months of being out (unless it was the other ankle, of course). Maybe we do need to buy a central defender after all?

Sol and Ashley were quite cool, in fact. Especially Sol. I thought he would be bigger, though . . . Actually taller than him . . . hmm.
I saw the game (on telly though), and it did appear that Sol picked up a small knock.
