Given that we’re in the beginning of the silly season and have little else to talk about besides wild unsubstantiated transfer rumors, I thought I might submit a miniscule (and admittedly way off-topic) problem to all of the illustrious minds here at ArseAm.
The problem is this:
About 10 years ago I purchased a football manager sim (on PC) for my aunt. For the better part of a year and a half, she was absolutely hooked on it, but lost her copy of the game shortly before her system melted.
Since then, she’s gone through extended phases with other (some might say “easier” sim programs: Civ 1, 2 & 3, etc…) , but has never recaptured the enjoyment she had with the manager sim.
Unfortunately, I can’t remember what the name of that original sim was (since it was all text and tables, and comparing my memory of the game to descriptions I’ve read on ebay, I’m suspecting it might have been “Championship Manager”).
So, she now has a P3/500 and I thought it might be nice to get her a new(er) football manager sim (off of ebay probably). Unfortunately, I have no idea which, of the four or five titles available, is generally thought of now as the best manager sim.
Which one would you avid game players suggest (and please don’t mention that she should upgrade her system, as that goes without saying, but is impractical for the near future)?
Secondly, if I bought a game from England would it be playable here (or at least playable without having to change the system preferences, installing a slew of drivers and the like)?
Thanks in advance.

Without a doubt, Football Manager is the best sim footy game available in the market at the moment, but unfortunately it takes a high-end or latest model of PC to work (or at least work smoothly). If she’s using an old model of PC, perhaps can stick back with the CM3 or CM2 Series, that’s if she can find the old copy still available in the market.
I think the game would be playable anywhere.

There are a couple of older football mgmt sims that you can get on the net for free that will work fine with an older computer. There is Ultimate Soccer Manager, Ultimate Soccer Manager II, and USM98. That series was my favorite before CM/FM. There is Super Soccer Manager which is ok but not a favorite of mine. I’m pretty sure that one of the older versions of CM is available for free on the net, maybe at SI games’ site. The relatively recent CM4 ran fine on my old P3/1k with 256mb ram so that might work on your machine. The new FM is too much for a P3/500 in my opinion.

Not surprisingly, Cole, Chelsea and Mourinho have been found guilty in breach of rules K5, K3 and Q respectively. At the reading of the verdict its being reported that Kenyon asked if he could buy a vowel. Some people never learn.
Apparently, Cole has said will continue to fight the ruling. I’d like to go on record by saying that if he does that, I see our war chest increasing in direct proportion to his current worth. Can you say, “Clichy”. I’m already working up a chant for the kid, having never really had a chance to figure one out for Ashley. Maybe something along the lines of “Ash for Cash” would be appropriate. Especially with Arsenal likely to challenge if they feel the fine on Chelsea is too lenient, this is not how we want to start building a title challenging side over the summer.
I guess the good news is that Cole has a good chance of having a new rule named after him (may I suggest a Cole Search?) and it seems that this mess has done little to dampen his worthless, international friendly form. Nice career move, Ash.
Can we have a summer story that strengthens our team spirit, guys? Please?

I am glad they are all found GUILTY of their sins.
What else could possibly be the outcome. If Cole plays the Bosman card, he will live in infamy.
Anyone for FIGO?
He apparently was released by Real Madrid.
He is only 32… would SURELY be of value on those big Champion’s League nights.
No, he isn’t the same player he was a few years ago, but sometimes you just need that little something to prove to the world to get the engine revived. (See: ROGER CLEMENS)
He’s very talented, and has that world class experience that we are looking for in Europe.
I don’t think we’d go in for him, but I’d say WHY NOT? as opposed to WHY?
Spurs would love him, thats why we know he’s not going there!!!

A few considerations about Figo:
Is he willing to sit at this point in his career? Apparently his falling out with Madrid involves just that.
Is he willing to break his 32 yr.old arse in the Premier Kickboxing League after all those years in La Liga? Is he even capable?
Is he willing to sign a one year contract only, as is our policy? What would we pay a former galactico?
Someone with deep experience in the CL would be great for our mentality in the competition. Hmmm…

He wouldn’t have to sit out the BIG GAMES.
He’d be fantastic insurance againt an injury to Paddy…
He has allegedly always wanted to play in the EPL… and as I said, some folks need the challenge. He is not exactly a slight player. He’s a strong big man. I’d say he’s capable.
Our policy and what he’d be willing to sign for, etc… are all BIG questions.
If we want to win the Champion’s League in the next few years, we’ll have to take a chance or two on getting there.
If United or Chelsea or Liverpool were to sign him, I am pretty sure he would help out there team…
We don’t need him to CARRY our team… just help with the heavy lifting of the CL.

Good points about us taking chances. Not exactly Wenger’s style, but after Reyes maybe he’s willing to reconsider. Some best laid plans often surprise you anyway.
He sounds like a Pool player, someone who will keep Gerrard more consistent and one they feel they can now attract. Chelsea have their pick, so I’m not sure they would be interested. And even though Wenger has said he is looking mid-20’s, almost everyone we’re been “linked” to has been a teen. Still, Lehmann was no spring chicken which proves that the right player is the right player no matter how long in the tooth he might be. But with Arsene being so proud of his kids who have had quite a bit of big game experience…I don’t know. We’ll have to see how summer fixtures go.

The EPL will not be suitable for Figo. He likes to hold onto the ball too long and he tends to over dribble. He does not backtrack sufficiently to defend. In the EPL, that will not work. I say let the Spuds have him.
