Arsenal America’s Mike Kavanagh on the BBC with Nick Hornby Little help or some suggestions please?
May 31

I was just sitting here reflecting on the season as I prepare a few things for next year, when it sort of hit me that, like NCAA football, a lot of teams came out of this season with something to boast.

However, a lot of teams came out of the season with not much to brag about. So I thought a quick match game would help pass the time…

1. Arsenal a) UEFA Champs
2. Chelsea b) FA Cup
3. Liverpool c) Back in Europe for the first time in a while
4. Everton d) EPL Champions
5. Man Utd. e) Absolutely nothing of value whatsoever to speak of…
9th. Spurs f) Even less than above…
1b, 2d, 3a, 4c, 5e, 9th (if that wasn’t obvious)

Geez, I guess we didn’t do too badly.
    We won the FA CUP.
We finished 2nd in the league, and don’t have to qualify for the CL.
There were folks on this site saying that 2nd place was more important than winning the FA Cup.
    Well, we got BOTH.
United are the real losers on the year. Malcom is their owner. They are in turmoil off the pitch. Nike is threatening them. Some fans are creating a breakaway team. Some sponsers are balking at them. They didn’t win a damned thing, and finished 3rd for the 2nd straight season.
Life isn’t so bad for the AFC.

    Old News:

Tony Adams grew his hair long in prison because he didn’t want to take his chances with the prison barber who was a Spurs fan. So I guess they can claim that victory.

    New News:

Rio questioned over some silly crap at a stag party. These guys just keep pouring on the class, and the media are jumping all over them. Are we witnessing a true collapse? All the signs are there…

Also read somewhere this morning that we’re linked with Andrew Johnson? Not sure how I’d feel about that if it were true. He’s an effective target man in the middle if you go by goals, but I would at least like to see someone who can head the ball in the back of the net before I die.

Colegate aftermath soon to pollute our off-season. All will be fined, surely. Lame, lame, lame.

My prediction for Wenger’s signings: no one over 10 million.

  3. stag133 Says:

Yes indeed, United are looking ready to implode!
    LOVING EVERY MINUTE OF IT!
Rio and Ruud to be deported!

I personally like Andrew Johnson. Say what you will, but he put 20 in the onion bag for a relegated team. He can score. He is no finesse player either.

I think we will splash the cash for a stud. What position? and what stud? those are the questions. I believe we will spend over 10 million for one player, at least ONCE during the Summer.
I am more interested in seeing what youngsters depart our club… ie, Bentley? Aliadiare? etc…

  4. ScottyUS Says:

I totally agree about the youngsters. Last summer I was digging around for news about big signings (when I wasn’t fretting over Paddy) and this summer I find myself cool to the prospect of everyone we’ve been linked to. Maybe I’ve been Reyes-shocked, but all the big producers this season are either too expensive or haven’t done enough in English football to make me think they’re going make the jump. SWP is attractive for our obvious weaknesses on the right when Freddie isn’t fit, and would be great competition there, but I just know Wenger won’t buy him for what City want. And something tells me that he’s going to be injury prone. The guy is tinier than Owen. Eto’o is being linked to Chelsea, and he’s amazing, but the EPL is a whole ‘nother animal. I’d have to echo your sentiments regarding Johnson, there. He’s not fragile and some of these golden boys from abroad won’t duplicate the season’s they’re having at their present clubs. Not with the Bolton’s and Blackburns among us running riot.

Sol’s ankle prblem is worrisome. Where’s his head going to be? Just when I thought we had some solid central defending and competition, I believe Wenger will spend the biggest piece of the pie there to cover us. Not such a bad thing, really. I’d rather see our young lads be given a shot up front. But I really wanted Essien to replace Edu. I wonder if Gattuso is frustrated by the way Milan wrapped things up this year?

And somebody mentioned Forlan, but I think his success has everything to do with the fact that he’s not in the Premier League. He’s not likely to return.

Personally, I’d like to see Wenger let the kids have a shot in summer training, especially our young strikers, find some mid-range priced replacements in the middle and back that won’t mind sitting half the year, and a proven keeper to keep Lehmann honest.

  5. Afrikan-Gooner Says:

I’d rather have Peter Crouch than Andy. He’s a beanpole of a striker, with quite a touch. Hell, if he was born here, he’d be in the NBA. One day he’s going to fill out and be as big as Jans Kohler. And he popped quite a few in this season, isn’t he in double figures? Not bad for a man from the bottom team. He brings something new. Just Imagine Arsenal chasing the game against Real, we bring him on and start hoofing it up for him, corners, free kicks, gives the opposition a new dimension to worry about. I love Andy’s game and work ethic, but I just don’t see him as our target man.

We’ve been linked with Robhino. I’m not that excited, because he’ll come as another ‘project’ and we have too many going on right now. We need a finished article. Maybe buy him and loan him to PSV so he could get the playing time he needs to develop.

  6. Bergkamper_4_Life Says:

I got them all right! Hey, Andrew. Do I get a ‘SPURS’ scatch n’ sniff sticker for that?

Oh wait. I’m eating Mexican tonight. A regular sticker will do. :)

  7. stag133 Says:

I absolutely think ZERO of Peter Crouch!
I see him as the next Danny Dichio. He is not athletic, and I don’t think he has great touch at all.

I don’t think Crouch or Johnson are coming, aren’t they both English?! Arsene won’t have that!
    haaaaaaa!

  8. Andez Says:

I don’t think Andrew (or Andy rather) Johnson is the real deal. He scored 21 goals in the Premiership, a significant part of them coming from penalties (not to mention those he missed). To me, he’s more like a one-time wonder (remember Michael Rickett?) whose reputation today is yet another “product” of the press and media. If Francis Jeffers couldn’t cut it with Arsenal, I can’t see how Johnson can.

The only positive note is - well, at least Johnson himself is an Arsenal fan!

  9. Afrikan-Gooner Says:

Oh I like Peter. He denied us three points.

And think about it, he can’t be any worse than Reyes, can he?

  10. stag133 Says:

He is miles worse than Reyes on potential and skill level. They aren’t even on the same planet.
But perhaps he is better at Reyes in toughness and coping in England. I’d take Reyes over Crouch every time, but we paid ALOT for one and Crouch would be alot less expensive for sure.

I couldn’t see Crouch fitting into the Arsenal style of play.

  11. gerard Says:

Well I almost got them right. I put 5 with F and 9th with E. I thought it was a trick question! Okay, I knew the answers but I still answered as above. Those two losses still sting but the one victory was sweet (B).

I agree with Andez. Johnson makes me nervous as most of his goals were PK, I don’t like living in a glass house. I also don’t like that style of football, lob it over and run and hope like hell he’ll get it in, kinda like Drogba versus Liverpool. I like the build up of play, then the goal. I can’t help but think he couldn’t really serve Arsenals style of play.

  12. ScottyUS Says:

Reading the comments on Johnson’s PK tally…I’ve yet to determine why its so high. How many times has he been called for diving? Is he simply finding a way into the box and on the ball by being tough, fast and small? Personally, after seeing him play and save points time and time again for Palace, I would feel pretty good if he came in at the hour when our passing was off. Goals are goals, and if he’s been watched closely as I imagine he must be, he’s getting them.

I also wonder what the guy could do if surrounded by a few play-makers. He may yet have potential in other areas. Very Freddie like that. I can see a Cesc pass to him being very deadly as he seems to be adept at finding space where there doesn’t seem to be any.
