Arsenal Sign Alexander Hleb I STILL Love The Clash, Part Two
Jun 27

As they say on sports-talk radio, first-time, long-time here. Anyway, I just read on Soccernet that we’ve made a 14 million pound bid for Brazillian striker, Robinho. Just wondering if anyone’s seen him in action and how good this kid is.

The Soccernet article.

Robinho ? He’s a Pele without headers and less power and flair.
But the future candidate for Ballon d’Or and FIFA World player.
In two years he will be the best player in Brazil. He’s almost as good as anyone else in the team (Ronaldo, Ronaldihno, Adriano).
He could be the best partner for Henry.
He’s very very intellgent and his jugement making tells you without no doubts that he’s a BIG BIG player. far better than Ronney or Ronaldo of Manure.

  2. kservik Says:

He is magic with the ball, fast and intelligent. The main problem with him is that he looks weak and very small, still this can also work to his advantage.

  3. paul Says:

If there’s one BIG STAR available at the moment, definitly his name is Robinho.
If we’ve got a chance to sign and I’m sure the boss will do anything to land him.
If this means paying 30 millions pounds I say GO.
I can even send my own modest contribution to the cause.
He would like to play with Henry this is sure.
We can beat Real as their main concerns remain in defense and midfield. They’ve got 3 world class strikers in Owen, Raul and Ronaldo.
They don’t want to pay more than 25 M $ wich is our starting point. Any improved offer from Arsenal is likely to outbid Real “last offer”.
It’s up to Santos and Robihno.
I think, in many ways that Arsenal is a BIGGER chance for him than Real at this stage of career. Wenger’s a very famous manager and there’s stability at Arsenal. He will develop quickly at Arsenal.
Real Madrdid is a legendary club but they need to rebuild their aging team and can’t spend all their pesetas in Robihno.
This is why Marca and AS (Madrid pro medias) are increasingly worried about the situation. They had annunced an agreement in a week that proved desastrous for Real bid.
Verbal agreements are nothing in football. We know before we sent our offer that the player will enjoy the idea of joining Arsenal.
Even though it’s difficult I would like to remain optimistic about our chance to sign the boy.
Honestly if Ronney is worth 30 M pounds Robihno is worth more than 25 M $.

  4. DannyT Says:

He looks to me like a classic Wenger signing. But I fear he will prioritise Real Madrid and not want to come to Arsenal. Maybe Gilberto should give him a phone call.

  5. paul Says:

We fear the same thing and Real Madrid are now relying on Robinho to put pressure on Santos.
But Robinho already said he willl enjoy playing alongside Henry.
Wenger’s got a good reputation with young players.
Santos are not impressed by Real Madrid. I think madrid have been arrogant as usual and they thought Robinho was already their player.
He’s a very intelligent man, and as a brazilian I’m not sure if he will say Real Madrid or nothing.
The deal can be done this week. We have to push hard, and Silva is our “invisible” “agent”.
I’m getting more and more optmistic by reading spanish newspaper who announced every since december that Ronaldinho was “done” or “to be done” “next week”.
Now they are getting very tough with Santos and their own board sompe ways. I think they look like a losing side to me since 2 or 3 days now.

  6. gunner4life Says:

Robinho may have the skill but he is too light weight for the EPL. Rooney may not have the same level of skill as Robinho but he has physical power to go against the defensive brutes in the EPL. Robinho will probably spend more time on his backside than running with the ball - case in point Reyes. If Wenger does bring him on board, he will need to put Robinho thru a major weight program to beef him up to withstand the rigours of EPL. And it gets worse in winter with poor playing surfaces - not exactly the playing stage for a master dribbler like Robinho. I say he will still go to RM.

  7. paul Says:

    We desagree.
    1) We can beat Real as we did in few occasions.
    2) Pires was EPL best player in 2002.
    3) The brazilian league is a tough one.

  8. paul Says:

    Robinho is class above.
    Rooney is OVER RATED.
Johan Cruyf wasn’t a big guy.

  9. KYGunner Says:

I saw him play this weekend on FSC and he may be the fastest player in the world. He reminded me of Henry in the speed and acceleration department. He’s young and has immense potential. Typical Wenger target is right!

  10. dkilpatrick Says:

Absolutely have to say ditto to that! Saw him this weekend on FSC as well, and was amazed. Didn’t the announcer say at one point, “Ronaldo who?”

This would be a brilliant signing.

  11. SassyMonkey Says:

Signing Robinho would be a dream, just imagine the Arsenal wings being manned by Quincy and Robinho. Both are like Thierry in that they have great touch first and incredible speed to back it up.

But, I kind of think it’s too good to be true. That and Real Madrid won’t let him go easily. This could be a distraction for something else (SWP, who knows).
I’m also not sure this kid could make it in the EPL at this stage, he’d get the same treatment Reyes did and his figure is even more slight. I think we’d be paying a lot of money for a pretty considerable injury risk.

At any rate, nice to see us shaking things up a little!

  12. thedawnraids Says:

dont get your hopes up, hes going to madrid; they still have an agreement and his agent still recognized that fact. the only thing our interest does is make them pay more.

i do hope Wenger will consider another Brazilian though, Baptista (who weve been linked with). big physical player whose strong in the air, an aspect were severely lack in right now.

  13. kinghenry14 Says:

Robinho is one of the most exciting and fastest players I have ever seen. He has been absolutely brilliant for Brazil in the Confed. Cup and has scored twice I think in 4 games. He is one of, if not the only player in the world who could match Henry stride for stride in a 100 meter sprint. One of the most promising young players in the world. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him win the World Player of the Year within the next 2 or 3 years. Has a chance to be an absolutely legendary player. Obviously would be a phenomenal move for Arsenal Football Club and one that could solidfy us, at least in the attack for a decade or more. Please get him Arsene!!

  14. Afrikan-Gooner Says:

We have too many projects going on. Bentley, Robin, Quincy - we don’t need another. I think we should pass.

  15. blob123 Says:

robinho is not exactly a project…he is more of an established article..
    1.national team place
2.best player in the brazilian leagues
where as Quincy was never heard of b4 arsenal, neither bentley nor robin…and of all these non has even made a sound impact internationally..
meanwhile they are all in the same age bracket..

Robinho is far more intelligent and a fantastic player

  16. dookster Says:

False…he’s not the fastest player in the world, Henry is no way as fast as Cole or Freddie in 100m sprint, and he admitted that in Arsenal mags.
He’s no way as fast as Djibril Cisse or Rommedahl.
I lived in Salvador de Bahia , and i watched him almost every single week, and to be honest, im not entirely impressed, people calling him the reincarnation of Pele, not because his skill but rather he started from Santos where Pele spent all his footballing career there.
He spent half a season on the bench and even when he started, he’s not exatcly performed, because mainly, he got fouled almost every 30 seconds. And thats so frustrating to watched.
There’s at least 20 player here in Brazil is more nimble, agile and faster than Robinho. In street of Brasil, we produced 10 Ronaldinho, 20 Robinho every single day, but to enter a club and start a footballing career is another thing which i rather keep it to myself.
And Robinho will never join Arsenal, that’s a fact, he was given millions of real (our currency) every single year, and Robinho is a big fan of Real for this contribution, another thing, Real got the upper hand as the current Real manager, Luxembergo is ex-Santos coach.

  17. gunner4life Says:

Baptista will be a more logical choice for Arsenal than Robinho. Plus he has scored 50 over goals for Sevilla over the last 2 seasons. He has said he wants to play in the EPL with Arsenal one of his preferred teams. He is a proven scorer in La Liga. Wenger shud ask Reyes to give his old club mate a phone call.

  18. ScottyUS Says:

I think Robinho has been terrific around his Brazilian mates and in this latest international play, but he’s going to get kicked into row Z in the Premiership. We don’t need another superfast striker who could get injured.

I like Baptista as a strong man who can help us on set pieces, crosses into the box, and straight-up muscling the ball through defenders a la Rooney. If not him, Adebayor, who runs like the wind and can also bring the ball down and into the net. He’s also cheaper, and would allow us to concentrate on a world class keeper. Also, something tells me Wenger isn’t done looking at defenders. Even though its been quiet on the Cole front lately, Wenger came out specifically of to say that only Henry, Pires and Vieira are going nowhere. Cole’s continued appeals may have worn out his patience, in which case lets splurge on another great left back who also has height and a more defensive style. If we want more attacking on the left, bring in Clichy.

Having said all that, if we do get Robinho, they’re going to have invent new cameras to keep up with any counter attacks that may get launch with he and Henry. Still, its that final ball and the ability to get past the Terry’s and Rio’s that I want to see.

  19. ScottyUS Says:

Of those three you mention, A-G, I think only Robin is ready to kick off the campaign. The others should stay or go out on loan. Wenger loves his kids, but I think he’s raised the bar on what he’s putting on the field. He WANTS that title back. This is the final chance to win it at Highbury.

And while Quincy has a load of raw talent, what I saw in the World Youth Championships was rather one-dimensional. He was brilliant in muscling past the kids he was up against, but suffered when he couldn’t just outrun them. He seemed to have a decent eye for laying it off, but so rarely got the chance. And his shot is still too weak. He’s got to learn to use others around him to get into space, and then I think better players will make him more useful. Of course, he was often standed out on the wing, an area that teams like Nigeria learned to protect after seeing him destroy Japan there, but I see him going somewhere.

Who knows what Wenger is seeing in training, but I would like to know for sure who going to be in the club come August.

  20. Anonymous Says:

Robihno may look small and lightweight, but the barzilian league is a lot more physical than the spanish league - he would be a great signing and a good fir for the Arsenal way of playing - problem is that everyone knows we are going to play our short, fast passing game and we need a different player to mix it up a bit - Baptista please.

PS. What’s the score with work permits? I thought you were allowed 3 non-eu players on the books. Hleb is one. Silva two. Toure - or does he hold some sort of Belgian passport?

  21. stag133 Says:

    Robinho is a project?
well, count me in for this project… please!
Watch the kid play. Line him up with Henry and either they give Henry space because they don’t want to get beat by his electric moves, or… they give Robinho space, because he has more moves than Travolta in Saturday Night Fever. It would be a great pairing. They BOTH like to pass the ball as well, making everyone around them better.
Please… bring in this project. Every team in the world would like to have that problem.

  22. SachinG Says:

The guy is talented for sure and he knows how to find space in/around the penalty area.

But like all talented Brazilian forwards, he will opt for Spain. Just wish for once, these guys atleast try out the EPL.
