Arsene has a way of moulding the flair with the guts, who else would have made such great use of some french utility players in the last few years.
But why have the prem clubs shied away from Hargreaves? Seems like he has a great engine. Seems like he has a great touch and passing vision.
It’s a shame we don’t have the odd Brit with grit in there. I think Taylor is a good keeper, Upson was a good centre back unlucky with injuries, maybe Stack will be worth it.
Can someone educate me on the down side to Hargreaves?

I met Owen when he came here (to Chicago) last year with Bayern for the game against Man U. He seemed quite good on the ball, but his shooting was quite suspect.
I don’t know if he has the build for the anchorman in the middle for a team like Arsenal. I think the lad from Sevilla would do nicely build-wise. (I still haven’t seen any clips of him).
But that is a good observation . . . what about Hargreaves?

He’s British that’s why. Whatever the reason, Wenger doesn’t sign British players, it’s that simple.

What about Sol Campbell and Francis Jeffers.

Because he’s crap? How is selling Vieira and replacing him with Owen Hargreaves an improvement?
The last few days have left me dismayed, not because Vieira has gone, but because Wenger seems to think Arsenal are just as good without him. I hope I’m wrong.

Purely out of emotional appeal, I like Hargreaves. He is everything I want to be: a Canadian lad who made it all the way to playing for England. However, I must admit that while he does get the job done for Bayern, I don’t know why he’s been picked so regularly by Sven. I wouldn’t go so far as to say he’s crap, as DannyT does, but Hargreaves just wouldn’t fit in at the Arsenal.

Sol was an obvious signing, as we got him on a free transfer. Franny Jeffers though, that one is still a mystery to me.

Because he runs about like a headless chicken, I hate it when he is picked for England, he has no flair or trickery.

and that god for that… if you want to say Wenger won’t sign Hargreaves or an inflated SWP or super inflated Jenas… because their British, GOOD!
Don’t want them.

in response to my own post, i DID send this in 10 days ago before the vieira thing was even a possibility, never mind probability. it was not supposed to compare the player with PV4 or even attempt to replace him.
i have seen several games he’s played for bayern where he has looked measured and controlled, and also good on the ball, and a great engine.
i think he’s been thrown in with england as a 15-30 minute “show my what you can do, son”. what a great opportunity that is…
anyway, not a massie fan, but after the last euro he appeared to be coming to the prem, but no-one picked him up, guess that should tell me.
i’m not a sven fan anyway. no b*lls.

Watching Sky’s story on SWP, and the footage recapped some of his goals. His style is exciting to watch in the way his entire little body explodes on a strike and how fast his legs seem to be going, but other than that blistering 25 yarder, he didn’t impress me half as much as 2.75 million pound Robin van Persie did last season.
He’s got a name and he’s tough to get off the ball but I’m relieved we didn’t get him for anything over 10 million.

Okay, the replies so far have been kind of negative and I just want to say something.
People that say he can’t replace PV4 are right. No one can, and to be honest if he came Wenger wouldn’t be expecting him to.
Secondly for those who said that he’s not got the flair or style or whatever. Remember this Arsenal stalwart?
Ray “Razor” Parlour
Sometimes it’s the grunts that get the job done and not the stars.

Because flair and trickery is definitely needed in order to excel. lol

I agree that you don’t need flair and tricks in order to be good.
I don’t agree when you say nobody could replace Vieira. Not that I have possible names to drop right now, but to say it’s impossible is… well… I just don’t think that way.
