Arsenal’s Midfield Muddle

By Mr Zog in Uncategorized

After waking up with a cold sweat from a nightmare where I imagined my girlfriends face to have turned into that of Drogba’s.

I couldn’t sleep. Numerous questions passed through my mind including;

“Can we win the league with Cesc in central midfield?”

This article by Soccernet’s Norman Hubbard helped with some answers.

Henry and Cygan each score a brace as Arsenal bounce back from Sunday?s loss at the Kremlin.

What a crazy match this was. Arsenal were rewarded a penalty kick early in the first half, but since it was Thierry Henry who was fouled, Lauren stepped up to take it. For the first time in his career, it was saved. Fulham keeper Tony Warner was easily man of the match, making not just the stop from the penalty, but also several saves from the run of play. It could have very easily been 10-2 tonight.

If anyone wondered why would Arsenal offered Jose Reyes a new contract during the summer after a largely non-existent performance last season, I guess the victory over Fulham could give us a little bit of idea.

I’ve read a lot of criticism of the club lately especially on the Yahoo Fantasy Soccer message board supposedly for Arsenal Fans. Over and over I read comments about how Henry shouldn’t be captain, how we need to buy bigger players, how Arsene doesnt have the touch any more, and how we have no way of winning the league this year. I really can’t understand the negativity I hear from supporters. Although we didn’t win the Premiership last year, it was still a thrilling year. Henry led the league in goals, we won the FA cup, and most of all we played some beautiful football....

One win, one loss…but something aint quite right! Now this post is coming at you from the angle of “I`m not looking to sling mud, I just want to understand whats wrong!”. Against Newcastle we played fairly well, some nice passing, a few good runs, had a bit of trouble breaking them down even though they went a man short…but when a team goes down a man they tighten up and sometimes it can even be tougher as they are less likely to come out of their shell. Only one goal from open play though, it was a good flowing move and a classy finish, sort of goal we are famous for...

was when Freddie went off injured. I thought we had the measure of Chelsea up until then, and if anyone was going to score for us it was going to be FL8 as he was scaring the life out of Del Horno. What bugs me though is why Wenger didn’t make a tactical change until FOUR MINUTES from the end of the match when the game was virtually over?

Apart from Cech fumbling a TH14 shot 15 minutes from the end, we never actually looked like scoring.
Surely had AW brought DB10 and played him behind Henry and Van Persie, we might’ve snatched a point.

I read a story elsewhere, hopefully ArsenalAmerica will allow me to copy and paste part of them over here. It was an article written by Paul Haywood of the Telegraph on Arsene Wenger:

* Arsenal have been demoted to London’s second club by an accident of history: the post-Soviet splurge of an oligarch, who yesterday scooped up a player Wenger had identified long ago as a potential Islington aristocrat, Michael Essien.
*Arsenal are an institution built from the bottom up. Chelsea are constructed from the top down.
*Man United make Arsenal seem like jumble sale bargain...

For those of you who do not know what a scouser is, it is a person from Liverpool. I say this because liverpool had the most injuries and bad luck out of the top four teams last year. and yet with all their problems they still managed to win the Champions League. The reason i am posting this message because i cannot stand the amount of negativity coming out of you Arsenal fans. I think a lot of you are forgetting that Arsenal for the past 20 years or more have never been the team with a lot of money and yet we have managed to squeez out the best players and a trophy.

Since Vieira’s departure to Juventus (sorry, don’t mean to mention this to continue talking about it, but it’s just something that tweaked me to think about this), I’ve really been pondering just how Arsenal (or other top-flight English clubs for that matter) stacks up internationally. Vieira’s departure must mean that at least in his mind he feels Juventus is a better club. Maybe it’s a money decision, or at least part of the equation, but I’m just curious about how Arsenal stacks up. I’m looking for honest feedback about this, not just biased...
