‘Big game bottler’ Thierry Henry Inspiring/Cool/Interesting Jersey Names
Sep 29

Patrick Vieira saw the writing on the ‘Marble halls of Highbury’ a few years ago when in his opinion Arsenal failed to bring in enough world class players to maintain their dominance in the premiership, Real Madrid kept calling but he chose to stay in the belief that Arsenal would become the attractive force in World football. Eventually he realized it would not happen while he was at his peek and so he had no choice but to move to a team that sets no limitations when it comes to buying stars to win trophys and satisfy his personal ambition.

Thiery Henry was aware of Vieira`s views and understood his feelings giving him his blessing on seeking a career elsewhere but he himself was not convinced that Vieira`s view of the future of Arsenal was correct. He chose to stay in the belief that with all the money at Wengers disposal, plus what they got from Juve`there was a very good chance Arsenal would sign 3 or 4 world class players. Unfortunately as the pre-season drew to a close it became clear that Hleb would be the only real addition to the squad, whether that was Wengers choice or the directors remains unclear, regardless of this fact all it done was to reinforce the opinion of Vieira that to be successful at the highest level you would have to move away from Arsenals obvious lack of ambition.

Henry now realizes his best option is to move to a bigger club, the question is should he push for a January transfer or wait until the end of the season. He is regarded around the World as one of the best forwards money can buy, and will have every top team after him, especially if he remains off the team sheet in European competition.

To do this he will have to remain injured for a few months or come out and state his intentions, it would be in Arsenals financial favour if he went down this street. Brady left for Juve` as a ‘God’ in the memory of everyone who saw him play and maintained their respect for what he helped Arsenal achieve, Thiery Henry will do the same. It is very rare that a manager of a top flight team remains longer than 10 years, they either leave at the top or stay to long and get sacked. Wenger is regarded by most as the best Arsenal manager ever, he has won trophys, unearthed gems of players and transformed the way Arsenal play to the point where it was suggested a year or so ago that they could even beat the Brazilian national team. Every poor performance from Arsenal now weakens his legendary status in the minds of the Arsenal fans. His tactical ability is being questioned not only against Europes best but also the lesser likes of the premiership who no longer fear the ‘Mighty Gunners’.

He failed to bring in any players capable of moving Arsenal back to the top of the league and challanging Europes elite in the battle for the Champions league, he assured us that our youth would carry us to the next level this year, he is wrong. Arsenal are a shell shocked, weak, leaderless team struggling to hide their vulnerability from the watching masses…it is not working! It is to late now, Vieira has gone and Henry will follow him sooner rather than later, other Arsenal stars can now also start planning their departures. When they gather in those North London coffee shops as the ‘French’ contingent used to do on a regular basis the topic must surely be “what team are you going to sign for?”.

Can you imagine Henry linking up with Ronaldinho, being supported down the left by Ashley, its going to happen. Wenger has already formulated his plans for the future and it does not include Arsenal, it cant, his memory will be too tarnished managing a team fighting for European qualification after all those glory years at the top. He can leave in the knowledge that he was the best manager Arsenal have ever had, that he made superstars out of unknown players and signed some brilliant youngsters that can only get better at Arsenal as they move into their new stadium…but it will be without him.

His challange lies abroad, possibly Barca` or Real, the French national team or any team he chooses. I am sure Arsenal`s directors know this too, they will try to keep him of course but the damage was done a few years back now when they and Wenger failed to continually buy to maintain Arsenals position as the ‘Team capable of beating Brazil’. NBG.

  1. love_Gunners Says:

    Hmmm.

A bit harsh and hard on the directors but true with some good points. I’m a bit worried with the way things are going at Highbury but will wait and see how things play out.

As Lee Dixon said “at least we have a new building to look forward to” and no one knows what the further holds for Arsenal.

If a new man comes in there will be no foundation like the one GG built. Listen I used the word if here. Most of the players are too young and no manager is going to build a team without home grow so which mean they have to buy some expensive players. But again I will wait and see how things play out.

  2. Anonymous Says:

    Err, maybe not.

I take it you have been hanging around in “those North London coffee shops… (with) the ‘French’ contingent…on a regular basis” and this is why you have this inside track on Thierry Henry’s mind. Were his english wife and child there? Was it in the coffe shop round the corner from his beautiful house where he is blissfully facking happy?

I regularly see Arsene on the morning of home champions league games, heading out on his jog from the hotel the squad stays at, and he has never mentioned any of this to me! What I do note is that Wenger has won more at Arsenal than Barcelona have won in the same timeframe and I’m certain that now he has ?40m in his pocket, a crop of great young players coming through and about to move to one of the best stadiums in world football he really feels like leaving. Numbskull.

Of course it’s a shame we missed out on Baptista and Robihno, but of those who moved, who else do you propose we signed to keep Henry happy? If we kept Vieira would you have been happy NBG? Wake up, he’s gone, Wenger saw something dwindling in his game and by his own admission he wasn’t at his best over the past 2 years.

  3. nipuna Says:

Wenger has signed a contract to lead us into the new stadium and he does not renege on contracts. Arsenal are not going to sack him either, especially after having clearly stated that he has a job for life. It’s obvious that this is going to be a transitional season, despite Wenger stating the opposite (well, he can’t just admit it, can he?). We have to wait till the end of this season to see how things work out. Hopefully, Henry will still be around and Wenger will bring in new players next summer. If that does not happen, we can start talking about the demise of Wenger and/or Arsenal. It’s too early to say anything right now.

  4. Andez Says:

One thing interesting about Vieira and Wenger is - for the past few seasons, whenever bad things happened to Arsenal, it’s always either Vieira OR Wenger’s false. It’s always like someone else would do a better job than what we have already got.

And I hold this belief - both Vieira and Wenger’s TRUE VALUE will only be acknowledged by fans WHEN THEY ARE GONE.

Are we missing Vieira now? You be the judge.

    Let’s wait until it’s Wenger’s turn.

  5. limey48 Says:

I can’t believe how fickle fans can be. Viera is past his best. Henry can be brilliant for 5 minutes in a game, but lazy for the other 85 minutes. I really don’t care if he leaves. Arsene has a new team being formed. He knows what kind of players he wants, we have a great new stadium due to open next season and things can only get better. Good times are coming.

apparently an Irish betting company Paddy Power (what a name!) has decided they have seen enough after one and a half month’s Premiership season, and decided to pay out whoever bet on Chelsea to win the Premiership NOW… Wow!

cue free advertising worth 100 times more than value of bets. Chelsea were frustrated last night (Moronho straight down the tunnel without handshakes, John Terry kicking off with Alonso) and have a tough little run of games as well as the international break. They draw on Saturday, we win and win our game in hand the gap is 6 points with 30 games to play…

  10. ScottyUS Says:

I need an hour or two to warm up for this one.

  11. stag133 Says:

    Get real please.
If Henry goes, you can have any seat you want in the massive new stadium, because they won’t be playing CL games there, or even games that have any bearing on us winning a league title for YEARS to come.

  12. Andez Says:

If anything, When one day AW does leave, I doubt the future Arsenal manager would be playing more English players than AW did. ‘Cos chances is that it seems more likely there would be yet another foreign manager to manage Arsenal than an English manager. simple fact is which current English manager is good enough to manage Arsenal?

Only one thing is pretty sure - we won’t be able to withness the same soft of free-flow attacking football anymore (cos who else is playing this way today?). yet on the other hand, we may see a whole bunch of players from the new manager’s home country coming to Arsenal.

Under AW we have a multi-national squad because of his knowledge of world football, and wild scouting network. Yet other managers may not. Just look at what Rafe did when he took charge of Liverpool last season - he bought Liverpool almost half team of Spanish players. I can only imagine should a “tactical” wise Italian manager in charge (to answer the call some fans been long urging for), we might end up having half team of Italian playing for Arsenal…. I afraid before long we would turn the clock back and regain the boring boring Arsenal tag.

Maybe we would eventually land the CL because of the new manager’s “tactical” brilliance, but i cannot bare to think of the prospect of seeing Aresnal playing Series A style of football… has anyone watch Liverpool v Chelsea yesterday?…..

  13. stag133 Says:

You might be correct Andez… we likely won’t see the same style of play, if a new manager arrived…
    and…
does Rafa get bashed for bringing in all those Spaniards? Like Arsene does for his French contingent? I don’t hear it… thats for sure.

    Liverpool v Chelsea
well… I didn’t see it… but they appear to play the same style of match over and over and over…

Chelsea will NOT change their tactics. Those would be to play defensively, and stay tight defensively, waiting for the opponent to make an error and then they score. If it doesn’t happen, (the error), then they are just fine with the 0-0 draw. It does not affect them negatively… Especially when they lead the league. They try NOT to LOSE any match… and figure the vast majority of teams are inferior in talent, and will eventually make an error or 2, and cost them the match.

As we saw last year in the CL, Liverpool are just fine with it… they’ll play 0-0 as well. If you discount Liverpool’s NON-goal last year, it would be 3 straight 0-0’s… and another match this weekend… wanna bet on 0-0?

Why change unless somebody can beat you? I wouldn’t if I were Chelsea…

  14. DannyT Says:

This article is merely scaremongering. Sure, it could happen, but there’s no evidence that Henry is thinking about his future elsewhere. None whatsoever. If Arsenal players have been doubting the clubs potential, as you suggest, then why have Gilberto, Reyes & Ljungberg all signed long-term contracts within the last six months? And why won’t Henry join them?

The only thing that eludes Arsenal is the Champions League, and with Porto and Liverpool winning it over the last two seasons, it is very obvious that you are not guaranteed the trophy whoever you play for.

As for your theory on Wenger leaving, what is it based on? Wenger is a principled man, he will not leave before the end of his contract amd he definitely won’t be sacked, so the evidence suggests he is alot more likely to stay than do anything based on your foundless theories.

Arsenal are 3-4 signings away from being a major force again. Say for example Wenger brought in Trabelsi, Ballack, Martins and Casillas next summer - you would probably sh*t your pants with excitement and believe we could steamroller everyone. This scenario is not an impossibility.

So chill out, yes, this seasons might be a bit of a downer, there is no cause to be overly optimistic or overly negative, yet.

  15. Andez Says:

Stag, I never asked for Chelsea to change their tactic. Man, they got a manager called the Speical One, of course he knows it much better than us!

I was just saying I am happy with what we’ve got, and the way we play. I want to see our brand of free-flowing football for as long as it lasts, ‘cos we won’t be able to see this type of football (played by Arsenal) forever.

  16. love_Gunners Says:

    You soo good..

Why are you soo worried about Chelsea? Does that says anything to you?

    I like your maths.

  17. joshuad Says:

Wenger isn’t leaving before we go to the new stadium. He has worked too hard for this and he won’t leave without seeing the fruit of his work. His talent is to build teams who can play his way; to develop younger players who, when they are in their prime, are already molded.

I agree with NBG that the damage was done a few years back when we didn’t continue to strengthen our team. We’re only now beginning to appreciate the significance of that decision. The last player we replaced, like for like, is Pires for Overmars (not incl. Lehman). It’s also when Paddy started griping about not strengthing. The way we replaced players with other players of proven quality is what’s kept us consistently good. That forces the youth to prove they’re good enough for the first team. Cole, Vieira, Ljunberg, Henry and Toure have all done it. You don’t just weaken the team and hope for the best.

It’s frustrating to be so good and so close to being great but your bosses don’t seem interested in doing what’s required to become truly great. The “Invincibles” could have recruited anyone who was good enough to make us better and not afraid to fight for their place. I truly understand Vieira’s frustration. In the past 2 seasons we’ve gotten weaker year by year.

Wenger made a huge mistake letting Vieira leave cheap & without a replacement, and he should have known better. Baptista said he didn’t want to come to Arsenal, and getting a Spanish citizenship was too important. Fine, we’ll come for you next year and that’s when we’ll let Vieira leave. I’ve heard Wenger say before that you can’t make someone play for you that doesn’t want to. Even after hearing Baptista’s agenda, he still sold Vieira believing the allure to play for Arsenal was too much for Baptista to resist. Shameful. Arrogant.

  18. Andez Says:

Wow guys, wait a mintue here. The damage done a few years ago when AW should improve his squad yet he didn’t?

Didn’t you remember back then Arsenal was in a deep mess almost failed to get the new stadium going because of the ever-imporving construction cost and bank loan?

Didn’t you remember back then AW wanted to buy and improve his squad but the board told him he only got less than 10 million or so to spend?

Please, it’s so damn easy to push all the blame to our manager and conviently forgotton whatever happened at the past.

WHY AW is playing the kids now? Do anyone think the kids just fallen from the sky today or yesterday?

AW started a collection of talented youngsters around the globe way back to a few years back. It’s not a panic plan AW just came out yesterday. Didn’t it appear to you that it was a long term plan that now it has reached to a stage that we got an embrassing reach of young talents that you just got to play them. It’s better to start gaining playing experience when they are 18/19, rather than they are 22/23 right?

And if a manager came out with a plan to invest in the youth development tracking back to a few years back, should we expect him just to forget about the whole plan now and buy a new set of players instead?

  19. pirate Says:

I’m more worried about how Arsenal do, but as Chelsea are league champions, however many points clear, backed by unlimited funds with a decent manager, have oirish bookies paying out, reporters askiing Wenger if he thinks the league is over, every newspaper talking about them dominating the game for years to come, I figured I’d pay them a passing thought…and point out that perhaps our demise has been greatly exaggerated.

  20. Proudtosupport Says:

What makes me laugh is we slag everyone off while they are here for “being past their best” and reckon we should cash in them, and then the moment it happens and they are sold to..lets say Juventus.. we moan saying that the team has no ambition for letting him go, even if we do try to sign two of the best players in the world.

I really dont understand why everyone has been going through the doom and gloom phase just lately. The boo boys should just shut up and get behind our boys. All the speculation about certain players bottling big games and then the same people stressing out that the same player is destined to leave due to lack of ambition are in fact the same people that creating the negative atmosphere that will eventually, if allowed to continue push our players out. Nobody wants to play for a team full of ungrateful supporters.

  21. Proudtosupport Says:

Baptista blew us out after we had sold Vieira, about a week before we sold him Baptista had come out and stated how much he would love to play “for a team such as Arsenal”

Shameful? Arrogant? I’m sure there was a lot more “behind the scenes” for us to accuse Wenger of being either.

nice and not unrealistic wish list…I’m thinking we’ll pick up Gravesen in January.

  24. stag133 Says:

We don’t push the players out… the management does, or they leave on their own accord.
IF the MONEY is right/better, then the player doesn’t usually give a rat’s ass about the supporters. Juventus doesn’t come close to filling their stadium with fickle fans… yet MANY great players play there… and they have a fantastic team.

  25. Proudtosupport Says:

i’ve been lurking around for a while now, I just never get the time to post anymore!

  26. Proudtosupport Says:

so you’re telling me that if everyone in the Highbury crowd turned on Henry for instance and gave him tons of stick every game for being arrogant and a bottler it wouldn’t make him question why he doesn’t go and join another side where he would be appriciated?

  27. joshuad Says:

You’d be happy if Henry leaves. Are you out of your mind? What are you a Manu fan? The only people that would be happy to see Henry leave are the people he’s leaving Arsenal for. Like you said Wenger knows what kind of player he wants. If they exsisted he’d play eleven Henrys coz that’s exactly the kind of player he wants. Who cares about a brand new empty stadium.

Even though Vieira’s past his best you name one player in the premier better than he is right now. You can’t name one because they don’t exsist. Where have you been? Your comments are ridiculous. You’re as silly as a pair of clown shoes.

  28. joshuad Says:

Hey, didn’t mean to blame Wenger exclusively, I meant to blame the guys with the money. Wenger is legendary and I’ve got to respect what good he’s done, but you can’t turn an blind eye on what the management hasn’t done.

We’re not as strong as we once were because we have no depth. We’ve let all our players go mostly for free, and others dirt cheap. It cost us the title last season and will cost us again this season. I don’t blame our young guys, they are doing all they can. I blame management because there’s no one to challenge these kids. They are playing not because they’re good enough, but by default; there is no one else there to play.

I’m sorry but I don’t buy the “There’s no money” bit. Tickets to our games are by far the most expensive in the world. Fans are paying for something, but we don’t always see it on the field anymore. I’m a bit upset because how do you go from “Top 5″ to “Not Mentioned At All” in less than a year? Do you remember how close we were? I definitely hope the guys can do it and if anyone can it’s Wenger.

  29. joshuad Says:

Andez, I’m not saying we just buy a new set of players. What’s happened is just like taking care of a car. If you maintain it, it will run smoothly. If you just ignore a group of small problems collectively they become a big problem. We have always taken care of (managed) our car very well until recently. Now it seems we need to buy a new car but we can’t afford it. We’re putting substandard parts on our ‘67 Nova SS. (wtf?)

In the past if we lost a player, we coped by bringing in a suitable replacement for less money. We got Henry a lot cheaper than we sold Anelka. We got Pires cheaper than we sold Overmars for. Our Nova used to be the fastest on the block and nobody thought they could beat us. Right now, our car is still pretty fast but it’s slower than it’s been the past 9 years and others are coming out with faster cars.

I hope with the stadium we will be good again but did we really need to weaken our team so much? Tell you the truth we still have a good team because like you said our young guys are good but in the long run an overhaul is always much more than maintenance. (Pardon the weird analogy)

  30. joshuad Says:

No, Baptista claimed he wanted to become a citizen a while Vieira was still on vacation and before Vieira signed. Baptista may have signed for Real after Vieira went to Juve but we had heard for several weeks he wanted to become a Spanish citizen while Paddy was still a Gunner.

  31. ScottyUS Says:

I’ve got an idea. Why not every club agree to play super defensive and go for the goalless draw with Chelsea? We can draw them out of the title. And I’m only half-kidding.

Just focus to nuetralize. It won’t work all the time cause they’ve got the firepower waiting to deflect us to death, but if every club were willing to drop 2 points every time they played them, it would have to happen, what, 6 or 7 times? Maybe 10? That’s a lot of points. Let’s hope it starts Sunday.

  35. faresk82 Says:

    You have a point.

But Arsenal is Arsenal, with GG or wothout him with AW or without him, with Herny or without him, with Bergy, with Wrighty, with smith, with Seaman, even with Cygan or without them all.
Arsenal is Arsenal, finishing 1st or finishing 5th.

If the younger guns were no good, at least we got one or 2 to be ok. If not, at least once we were the best team around, but every big team falls. Every power falls. Even AC Milan slept for couple of years.
Lets be honest, I have never imagined Arsenal to be the BEST team in the world, I imagned to be from the best teams, and I never asked to be the best. I like Arsenal for Arsenal itself, for the history, for the game. You cant ask yourself why you like soemthing, because you just like it/her/him.

I hope whenver the Le Boss leaves to leave behind him good memories, good team where the after him would be able to use to get better.

But Dixon said that at least we have something to look for next year, and he is right, the new Staduim is a new money income, its a new look, its a whole new thing.

Many teams reached to the top and fall down like : Leads, Lazio, Ajax, Roma, Napoli, Marseille … but few are still there in the CL and trying to get back to its best : Arsenal, Ajax.

Lets all hope for the best, but I do understand your frustration.

  36. Andez Says:

joshuad, i can understand ur frustration really. but our money situation is really not that good with a hugh loan on the back of the club. One of the reasons the tickets price soar rocket high is to fund the new stadium, and due to the rather small capacity of Highbury, even by raising the ticket prices, it’s still hard to offset the massive loan we been carrying. That’s the reason we need a new ground at the first place.

AW does have transfer fund made available by the club right now, but it’s understandable he would want to spend it carefully. ‘Cos unlike Chelsea, after we spent our fund, we wouldn’t have any more left. It’s better to buy it late than bought it wrong. Let’s be patient, things will turn around, I am very confident about that.

  37. stag133 Says:

What I am saying is that if Juvetus has these fickle fans and don’t even half fill their big ass stadium… and players still queue up to go there… it has everything to do with MONEY and OPPORTUNITY to WIN TITLES… not about fan support.

Great fans are wonderful… but if you are underpaid or playing for a team that doesn’t have big ambitions and follow up on those ambitions, BIG NAME PLAYERS willl move on.

  38. stag133 Says:

Just because the stadium is BIG, much bigger than Highbury… doesn’t guarantee you asses in all the seats. If we miss out on the CL next season, and Henry departs… as I have said repeatedly, YOU CAN GET TICKETS TO ANY GAME YOU WANT!
If players like Henry leave… we won’t fill that stadium… simple as that.

There is no going back to mid-table and hoping for a European berth… with the new stadium and all the financial problems that go with it… you need TITLES and European football YEARLY… to survive.

  39. NorthBankGunner Says:

Looks like I stirred it up a bit and got some good debate happening, slagging off my opinions works for me….but what if I`m right? we`ll see! Up the Gunners!!…How about this then…A dutch triangle attack? Bergy playing behind R.V.P and ‘Q’ and we`ll call it our ‘BPQ line’.

  40. Andez Says:

much more sensible assement from u this season danny, it’s great to read!

it’s a matter of time we will be having more players joining us, judging that the foundation we have at the moment, though not exactly a great start of the season, with a weaken squad + the early injury crisis, we managed only 2 defeats so far, not exactly a disasterous start neither. i can only imagine things will keep getting better with more additions in the future.

  41. joshuad Says:

I agree with you guy and am still going to be Arsenal through and thorugh. But to be that close to greatness and just settle for less is insane. It sounds as if there may be a lack of ambition. We had the potential to become one of the greatest teams in recent history but we’ve weakened and let everyone leave, why? If we’re perceived as a team that lacks ambition then how are we going to be able to bring in ambitious, high calibre players? Then there’s the prospect of being thrown out into the streets when you get close to 30. Who will want to come here? It makes no sense to me.

I believe some of our young players will become greats but some of them could not even make the bench for previous Arsenal teams. That means the team’s standard is slipping and we’re getting weaker. I just want the high Arsenal standard back. I don’t want kids to play just because they’re here, but because they’re good enough.

  42. faresk82 Says:

Cool down, Arsenal will finish Top 4. Even if they land injured Henry and 45 year old Bergy with 16 years old Cese and Broken hand Poom.

I have no fear of this. Arsenal with their young unknown kids beat everton last year in the Carling cup … with a goal from Danny who plays in Burnly now … another proove, Hoyte is playing first team in Sunderland, and he barely makes the bench to Arsenal.

We are fine as far as top 4. Cl is in our pocket … I think without Chelsea (full 7 ) Arsenal would look ok, but the full 7 of chelsea made Arsenal, Man u , Liverpool all look bad. But in fact they will finish top 4 …

My predection : 2nd place at least.

  43. ianwright Says:

stag133: ‘Why change unless somebody can beat you?’

    cos it’s f*cking boring!

  44. nipuna Says:

Does anybody remember that our game in hand is exactly what Chelsea face this weekend - Liverpool away? :-)

  45. nipuna Says:

Rafa has probably bought more Spanish players to Liverpool in one season than Wenger has bought French players to Arsenal in his career. But nobody is blaming Rafa and everyone points their finger at Wenger. Is it because Rafa won the CL or because Rafa spends 7m on English talent, i.e., Crouch?

  46. blob123 Says:

    Well spoken Andez…..
Last season everbody blamed vieira and didn’t mind him leaving….infact he was unwanted..

but now look at what is happening…we all miss him..
supposing Wenger left on his own because I believe the directors are not capable of sacking him because they know how difficult it can be to get a replacement.. we would all be mourning as arsenal goes down…claiming how the club lacked ambition in losing him

When arsenal were on their unbeaten run they looked invincible, untouchable and tomented all opposition…but tha run came to an end…just like chelsea seem to be all that…they will fall..

arsenal were even much nore better coz they were not struggling and had more convincing wins
