San Siro 1995 The Measure of Success
Nov 26

Sometimes the best way to deal with a physical team like Blackburn is to put them on their heels early. A fourth minute strike from Cesc Fabregas. TH14 added another and then Robin can Scorsie put together a brilliant run and shot from a tough angle to finish it.

I’ve only seen the last 30 minutes of the game, but it was filled with real bits of fantastic talent as Bergkamp and Henry both showed some real class. Pires, Freddie and Reyes were working hard and the defense had a bend but don’t break thing going on as Blackburn put on plenty of pressurel. A good win that keeps the momentum going.

It was definitely a good win. Blackburn have some fight in them, literally and figuratively. But the early goal was a real help. Cesc with a very nice shot placed perfectly by Friedel. He is growing in confidence in his last few matches, and is much better than he was earlier in the year.

Henry bangs in the second right before half-time, and we look really good up 2-0. We post a shut out with Cygan at LB… he really wasn’t too bad out there today.
VanPersie’s goal was excellent. It was all over but the partying, before it happened… but it was an excellent goal and terrific shot from a tough angle. If you haven’t seen it… make sure you do.

Well done Arsenal… looks like we are hitting a good patch as November ends. Chelsea keeps winning, but hey, its expected. Just worry about us.

Good win good goals, give credit to Blackburn for making it a very good contest. You can see why Blackburn have scored 2 at Chelsea and gave them a real fright and beat Man Utd 2-1 at Old Trafford also….

Arsenal are on the way up and it is very visible that Van Persie is the one who has made that significant step forward in his career and a fitting time for that as there will be no Bergkamp next year….

I thought generally speaking Jens Lehman was very good and has been so far this season…of course he is prone to make a gaffe here or there but overall his shot stopping and general command of the area has been pretty good….

well van persie showed the substance he was made up of .i think this goal is already in the competition for the goal of the season
it was a very difficult angle, reminded me of kanu’s goal in the late 1990’s.he is just the kind of striker we need alongside henry
well i was very sad initially when dennis was brought on the field with henry.
but dennis really had some tricks up his sleeve.

well i am more than a lot dissapointed with reyes. and i think we should offer him to athletico madrid +6million pounds in a swap deal fot torres
he just doesn’t fit into the arsenal line up.i know it is
utter rubbish considering he is the friend of torres.but there is no other option.

pires is returning to his original self.cesc is the next pablo aimar.he has
all the qualities in the aimar who i used to admire 2-3 years back.
ljunberg came and performed quite normally so did flamini.
flamini i must admit is sort of improving day by day.well to be true and fair to all cygan performed the role of an assuring left back.
he did not go forwars but yes he is positioning sense was good today.

and as a tribute to the real “arsenal at the heart, player” that is lehmann.he was the best
performer today .bringing about some excellent saves from all angles.

    well the ratings would be:
    lehmann 9
    toure 8
    cambell 7.5
    cygan 8
    lauren 9
    pires 8.5
    reyes 5.5
    fabregas 8
    gilberto 7.5
    henry 9
    dennis 7.5

The EPL can do without a cheating pr*ck like Savage who tried to get Reyes sent off. The ref shud have shown him a yellow for his theatrics.

  5. Clarkey Says:

Savage is a wanker. Blackburn is a tough as nails, physical team which I don’t think anyone can hold against them - Arsenal were the Blackburn of the top flight for a long, long time remember. In fact, I respect that type of approach to the game as much as I do the prettier types of football. But Savage? Sod off back to Wales you gremlin. And take Bellamy with you.

  6. Clarkey Says:

Also, congratulations to Henry for his 100th Highbury goal!

  7. DannyT Says:

Good result. I know two people who attended the game, and both said that Blackburn were poor. He also said Arsenal played the entire game in second gear and lacked concentration defensively.

I must admit, wenger’s persistence in playing Cygan makes me think he’s a complete tactical cretin. I’ll never change my mind on that - my fuel for my fire about him being a very weak tactical coach, either that or unprofessionally stubborn to the detriment of his own team.

Maybe we can scrape the wins up until we meet Chelsea, but if Cygan plays in that game and gets taken apart and we lose - I will never look at him in the same light again.

  8. stag133 Says:

Here’s the scoop… if you are going to rip Cygan apart for every miscue, you have to tip your cap to him if he plays well.
He is as 4th string Central Defender playing Left Back. He did a good job yesterday. We posted a shut out. I watched the match and have watched some of it again. Blackburn played hard, they always do. They played a decent game, regardless of the late goal making the outcome look like a blow-out.
We finished our chances beautifully. That was the clear difference. We played a good match and did what was needed.

I have read a quote that Wenger says: Cygan is our left back. PERIOD. He will be playing there until at least January, when we can either bring someone new in… or Cole comes back. (if he is going to Madrid, as I have read EVERYWHERE, feck’em, play Cygan)

Cygan is it at left back for now.
Say whatever you want about it, but those are the facts. As long as we win, it matter not at all. He is not nearly as back as folks make him out to be… and I don’t blame him a bit for what occurs out there… he is completely out of position.

A few points about the game

    - Reyes was clueless. He better sort himself out. Henry will always play. It is upto Reyes to gel with him. If he doesn’t click as a LM, we are left with a 17m player on the bench.

    - Goals from midfield have dried up. Pires has four (three penalties), Reyes and Ljunberg have one each. Hleb is not a goal scorer. I was so glad to see Fabregas score.

    - CM is too soft. Gilberto is getting run over by strong premiership opposition. Fabregas is too young and attack minded.

    - Campbell is looking quite shaky. Kuqi beat him for strength and Bellamy for pace. Does Cygan playing to his left have anything to do with it?

    - Henry maybe the best in many departments, but he could be the worst in the Arsenal team when it comes to corners. Bergkamp, Reyes, Fabregas, RvP, anybody is better than him. So I don’t know why he insists on taking them.

    - Finally, I don’t think anyone blames Cygan for his mistakes. We all know how good (or bad) he is as a CB, let alone LB. Everyone is just amazed that AW sticks with him. Wonder what will happen when we lose a game.

  10. DannyT Says:

Who said I was blaming Cygan? I AM blaming Wenger. I don’t care what he said or did not say - the fact that he plays this appalling player at all, let alone at left back, tells me Wenger has a major mental weakness.

I dont even care if we beat Chelsea with Cygan in the team, the guy has still probably lost us 20 goals alone in the last 3 years with his shocking mistakes.

The damage is done, and will no doubt continue to be done. There are other alternatives Wenger could at least try, but to the mystery of the entire football world, he won’t.

Personally I believe Wenger is being deliberately stubborn on the issue, even if it means to the detriment of his own team. He seems to want to keep playing Cygan until we achieve something, just so he can say “I told you so”. Why else would anyone in their right mind play someone this bad in such a team?

  11. stag133 Says:

    Not aimed at you DannyT…
but obvious Cygan is bashed repeatedly, sometimes rightly… sometimes not.
He had a pretty good match, and we kept a clean sheet.
Wenger is sticking with him at LB from what I’ve read. We don’t have many other options and we have NONE with top flight experience, that is the simple answer as to why Cygan. He has experience at this level.

  12. Rick Says:

Scene - Arsene Wenger’s bedroom, 3am. Arsene Wenger can’t sleep and is staring at the ceiling.

Wenger: “Despite the fact that I am at every game and practice, and that I have watched more football matches live (let alone on tape) than just about everyone on the planet, I still can’t figure our this left back problem. If only I had as much experience and first hand knowledge of the situation as Danny T then perhaps I could crack the code.

How could I not have forseen that BOTH of my young left backs would get injured. Curse me and my ignorance and stubborness.”

Danny I can distinctly remember a time, either last year or the year before (I will look it up if you like) when Cygan played something like 12 straight matches, Arsenal won 10 I believe and they allowed something like three goals. Cygan is not great, he is what he is: a perfectly competent second-string player. If you have an idea of a player who is available and better please send Arsene an email.
