Chairman Discusses Henry’s Contract Offer & Disses Everyone Else Negativity and haters
Jan 28

Youngsters give good account of themselves, but still fall to Bolton at the Reebok.

Stelios Giannakopoulos’ header with five minutes left was enough to send Wanderers through to the fifth round. Arsenal were hard done by to be knocked out today, as the very young side played as well if not better than Bolton for the entire match. The finishing was just not there for the Gunners, but honestly, I really can’t feel bad about this one. Sure, it’s disappointing to be knocked out of the cup - especially as holders - but, it was always going to be difficult at Bolton, and like I said, the youngsters played very well.

EDIT: You know, I just came back to read this, and it struck me just how much things have changed for Arsenal in the past year. I mean, I don’t think I would have ever written anything like the above in years - just sort of shrugging off a loss. Oh, the life of a football fan!

They are just not good enough, and dont look like they want to win until its to late………….

  2. stag133 Says:

    Great job Arsene.
Way to field an inexperienced team at a place in which we have difficulties. This was our ONLY legitimate chance to win a trophy this season, and we WERE holders of the title.

I find myself less and less shocked by us losing and by Wenger doing daft things.
Henry will be wearing a Barca shirt next season. Thats my prediction.
He’ll probably be playing against Cole who’ll be at Real Madrid.

Thank god it wasn’t on TV here in the States live… because I would have thrown the f’n television out the window.

  3. MikeK Says:

I disagree. I thought the side on the pitch today played extremely well. Remember, Bolton are a team that have owned our first XI for several seasons now, and here is our reserve side hanging with them stride for stride.

  4. MikeK Says:

Stag, you are WAY off base here. We’ve won the FA cup 4 times in 6 years. We need to be in Europe next year, it’s much more important.

  5. stag133 Says:

Why on earth would we field a “reserve” team. Wasn’t a reserve team in actuality, but seeing we have no depth at all, and Wenger decided our ONLY chance at winning a title this season wasn’t important, we fielded less than our best.
Bolton were missing HOW MANY PLAYERS?
This is where you play your best team and knock the opponent out early.
Nope. Incredible decision to field the team we did.

  6. stag133 Says:

So we are so pathetic that we can’t play in the FA Cup, because it will take away from our league form? You HAVE to be kidding.
Why not field a weakened team in the CL as well?
So we can REALLY concentrate on the top 4 spot?
This is freaking FOOTBALL for crissakes. If players can’t play in 2 matches a week, what the hell are they doing out there?!!

Funny how when United wont the treble there was no problems… we are just pathetic and making excuses for Wenger at this point.
    HORRIBLE.

  7. Dennis10 Says:

I saw the game live and dont have a television anymore…………..

  8. stag133 Says:

    exactly!
    But Dennis…. its OK mate…
because the FA Cup isn’t really important.
    Thats today’s excuse.

  9. Galaxy_Gooner Says:

Yet again that Swiss plank Senderos has cost us the game! He left Stelios unmarked for the goal! Obviously, he’s lacking confidence so why is AW picking still picking him??? While I’m on the subject of AW……I’m amazed he never made any changes in the second half! Our midfield was “pants” today!!!! Reyes did sweet FA! Hleb kept giving the ball away! And as for Flamini….well we’d be better off playing with 10 men in the team as I’ve never seen him do anything positive when he’s in the side!!!!! Anyone of these three should’ve been taken off, because they did bugger all today!!!!

  10. MikeK Says:

Look, if we’re not in Europe next year, then you can guarantee that Thierry’s gone. Plus, with the move to Ashburton Grove, the money that comes from Europe will be key in keeping Henry, and adding to the transfer kitty. We can’t expect to attract any quality players if we’re not in Europe. That’s the nature of the beast now.

  11. Galaxy_Gooner Says:

    Stag,

It was on the telly out here…..and I paid $15.95 to watch that crap! I’m writing to Adelphia to demand my money back!!!!!

  12. MikeK Says:

Jesus H Christ! It’s not as important THIS year. Each year is different, and given how this season has played out, priority number one is making sure we’re in the Champions League next season.

  13. NL11 Says:

The final piece of achievable silverware (realistically) for 05/06 has now been locked away, completely out of our Gunners’ grasp. I feel like going on a six month drunk, until new hope can be conjured up in the sight of next year’s squad (hopefully changed in some places) taking the pitch at the new stadium.

Of course, if on the 1,000-1, they do a Liverpool and pull of the Champions League, the good news is that I’ll already be good and pissed and therefore, in the proper state to celebrate like a Gonner Gone Wild.

The real question now: Will the Gunners be playing Champions League Football next year?

Oh my, oh my, its worth a lot, A LOT, of money and possibly the fate of the club for years to come. So, now the pressure is really on lads.

Pass the bourbon please, thank you.

  14. Clarkey Says:

Write this down everybody, cause it doesn’t seem to happen often, but…

Stag, I completely agree with you. Now in order to shield themselves from the embarrassment, people are resorting to devaluing the FA Cup. What a load of rubbish.

  15. love_Gunners Says:

Stag - It wasn’t a bad game at all and we would have won it but it shows something is missing with this team. Really hope MK bring back some of the old Arsenal grit, pride and passion to these players and helps these kids esp. if they are the future of this club.

The defence did an ok job today but we are not good enough to win away or beat any team that comes out to play and the excuses is killing us. I don’t know what Wenger see in Reyes. With Hleb I will give him some time. Diaby - the next Vieira sure! Watching Wenger on the touchline even makes me sick..

    Up the Arse.

  16. love_Gunners Says:

Yes we will play CL footballl next season but I can’t see how we going to win it this season.

  17. love_Gunners Says:

Stag, I completely agree with you. Now in order to shield themselves from the embarrassment, people are resorting to devaluing the FA Cup. What a load of rubbish.

Come on Clarkey, You should know by now it was one of Wenger’s silly excuses.

  18. Clarkey Says:

Of course I know it’s one of his, and other people’s, excuses. It’s beyond silly though now mate. This is like the “I didn’t see it” to the umpteenth degree.

  19. CDNGooner Says:

Realistically, we weren’t going to win the FA Cup this year. Who’s kidding who. Too many games at a point where getting Top 4 is the key. Don’t get me wrong, I want to see Henry lift a trophy but it isn’t going to happen this year. I mean, we all knew what team Wenger was going to send out there before the game. Yikes, Wenger didn’t even bother making subs but the kids TRIED. I don’t care if they win or lose . . . it comes with being a supporter but I want to see the players try and help each other out. It hasn’t happened lately . . .

Anyways, feel free to step off the bandwagon if you don’t like it. We’ve been lucky to watch Arsenal punch above their weights while the plans have been in place to help Arsenal become competitive for a long time. If we didn’t have Ashburton Grove to look forward to, you can bet Arsenal would go back to being a mid-table team for a long time. Right now, I’ll settle for short-term pain for long-term gain.

  20. love_Gunners Says:

Walk down the street and no one really listen to Wenger anymore. At work we have a joke going called “The things Wenger will say”. I stop taking that man serious.

  21. rajthomas Says:

I don’t think AW was devaluing FA Cup..He has no choice at this point but to make sure we get into CL place next season..So, he rested the big players, can’t afford to lose TH, Lauren etc. to a physical game…
I would have liked to see him buy 2 experienced DM players and then fielded them this game…He keeps hoping things will magically turn around this season. Nobody to put the ball in the net when TH is out. Adebayor has had problems this season in front of goal. I would have preferred Samaras that Man City just bought.
But from reading the BBC commentary, looks like we played a good game with a bunch of teenagers. That is a positive but does not do us any good this season. I hope this Diaby is the real deal. Now, we need a Gilberto replacement too.

Our defense should be okay once the duo KoloCole are back.

  22. fujiheavy Says:

It wasn’t Senderos’s man, it was Campbell’s. Campbell was busy instructing Flamini to mark someone and forgot to mark someone himself. Sendero’s was marking Vaz Te. Also, Senderos played pretty well considering that he was the left back, better than Cygan anyway.

Hleb had an excellent game considering. He created 3 excellent scoring chances. He should have shot on a couple of occasions.

I completely disagree with this post - I thought that the youngsters can hang there head high, with the exception of Reyes, who played like **AYE CARUMBA**(censored). They created good chances and were unlucky that Campbell missed a sitter again, just like against Wigan.

  23. fujiheavy Says:

I thought that Reyes was pants as well. His decision making is rubbish. Hleb played really well today and so did Ljungberg.

Considering how inexperienced the central midfielders were, they played really excellent and at times were outplaying Bolton.

Djourou, I believe, is better than Senderos.

  24. fujiheavy Says:

We did have a good game. We had the better of chances in the 2nd half and have a very bright future considering that our 1st teamers went to the Reebox earlier this year and were played off the pitch. This game, you wouldn’t have known that.

Apart from Reyes and Campbell’s moment of madness, when they scored, it was a good game and although I am not happy with the result, it was a good performance.

  25. love_Gunners Says:

So you wanna tell me Wenger is God now and can predict what will happen in the future. Resting players to finish 4th is as silly as it gets. Anyone excuse from that man.

What happen to one game at a time?

  26. fujiheavy Says:

I thought that the youngsters (apart from Reyes, who was rubbish) played excellent. Senderos had to play at left back and did well and even got forward a couple of times. Gilbert is a superb prospect. He is far better than Eboue who looked pants in African Nations.

Hleb played really well. He tracked back and I created some excellent scoring opportunities one which Reyes should have buried, but stuck into orbit.

Ljungberg ran his socks off and I thought was Arsenal’s man of the match. Unlucky not to score.

Djourou played really well as he was up against some bigger strikers like Davies, but his technique is really excellent.

Campbell, other than the goal - when he forgot to mark someone, played better. He missed another Wigan sitter from about 6 yards….

Diaby is a good prospect. I wouldn’t really say Vieira-like as he can shoot from outside and doesn’t seem as tenacious. He wasn’t getting around yet as you would like but he will. Some of his dribbling was superb. He is going to be a star - good buy!

Of course, Van Persie - he is going to be superb as well -but we all knew that with his displays this year.

I still wonder about Reyes and his poor decision-making. You can’t question his commitment, but his finishing is so awful. I reckon Wenger needs to get some competition for his slot - Maybe when Bentley or Ryan Smyth come back from loan they can provide that….

  27. Mazza Says:

Thought it was a pretty darn good performance although it is sickening to lose again to those bunch of wankas and that greek dwarf again scoring the winner.

Everyone played decent I thought. Djourou looks class and I would be tempted seriously to start him all the time. Unlike Senderos, he’s quite slender and doesn’t have the lumbering quality that afflicts Sendy and Campbell. He’s slender but still strong- a modern day centre back.

I thought Reyes was okay but there was one moment in the first half that summed him up. He was dribbling and no-one was really near him, but then he just tripped himself up with his right foot taking out his left. He really is the most annoying player I have ever layed eyes on yet by his abysmal standards, this was actually one of his better away performances. As I said, that’s not really saying much.

Flamini done his usual thing; which wasn’t much. He was okay I suppose. Diaby looks good but I he has this lazy style which can grate on me sometimes; alot of african players have it. Adebayor looks very similar from what I’ve seen.

Henry has an injury so I don’t see what people are complaning about in terms of selection. Apart from him, who was missing? Your not telling me Bergkamp and Pires would have made a toss of difference to that scoreline.

  28. rajthomas Says:

I am not in any way letting Wenger off the hook. I believe this season is his fault and his alone..We all saw the weakness in the squad last season vs ManU, and it is the same problem this year..His only transfer dealing Hleb did not address any of the problems…Only good thing about this season versus last is that we have not conceded as many goals from set pieces till it happened again today
But considering the current season, AW had no alternative than to give up on the FA Cup.

  29. rajthomas Says:

When has reyes ever played well as a striker? He plays better as a play maker when he allowed to run all across the field. He is more effective and one of the best players in that situation..Don’t blame Reyes for playing out of position.

  30. irishgunner Says:

Lauren and Henry had hamstring problems. Do people here want us to have played them today and put them out for two months? Get real.

Bergkamp, Lehmann and Pires were the only ones rested. As has been pointed out here already the goal was Campbell’s fault not Almunia’s so Lehmann would have made no difference. Some of the people who have criticised a weakened team have also criticised Bergkamp and Pires for the last few weeks. Show some consistency.

I will continue to defend the team because I believe Wenger has a long-term plan but it has unfortunately been put off course by other events (Colegate, Henry’s contract, injuries and the loss of form by senior players) These are not excuses, merely explanations. I firmly believe the team will come good.

I was devastasted by the loss too. Why? Because a weakened inexperienced young team nearly pulled it off. I was proud of those young players today. Gilbert, Djourou, Senderos, Diaby and Flamini all played well. Those who saw the BBC coverage of the game will have seen Flaimini’s reaction to the Bolton goal - whatever other limitations he has, he cares. What a boost to their confidence a win in the Cup would have brought.

Reyes looked exhausted. Van Persie tried too hard as youngsters often too. Hleb again looked to be on a different wavelength but showed glimpses that if he could adjust to the play (or the play adjust to him), he could be a player.

Senderos played better because he finds left full-back easier than right centre-back. I am fed up pointing out that himself and Sol are not a good partnership.

  31. stag133 Says:

    Here we go again!
How exactly have we punched above our weight again?
Seeing that we have more money than 99.5% of every team in England, barring Liverpool and United, we might be the richest team.
Punch above our weight? Tell that to freaking Bolton!

So why not just put out the kids the remainder of the year? I mean, we aren’t going to win the league realistically… so lets not get any body hurt.

The CL? Less of a chance of winning this than the FA CUP. So we should field a weakened team against Real Madrid and get OUT of that competition as well. It will sap energy out of Henry and others. We don’t want to do that.

Nobody is jumping the bandwagon, but we sure as hell aren’t going to do a “No Comment” or a we’re just wonderful… while we pile up losses, and the manager plays a lesser side in our ONLY legit chance to lift a trophy this season.
Its pathetic and stupid is what it is.

  32. stag133 Says:

So let me get this straight…
we’ve gone from the Invincibles, trying to conquer the world and win every title out there…
    to …
the FA Cup doesn’t really matter? So if we field a weakened side thats OK?

    What a LOSER mentality.
We’ve got over 3 months of football left and we are resting starters for the run in?
You have GOT TO BE KIDDING ME.
What an absolute bunch of crap.

This team has become quite the joke… especially compared to just a few years ago.
Please, tell me why anyone would want to come to the Arsenal again?
Is the CL match-up versus Real Madrid deemed “important” to you guys? I mean realistically, we can’t win that tournament either…
so by that brilliant logic, shouldn’t we rest our best players and concentrate on getting the 4th spot?
    Geeeeeeeeeeezus.
    Unbelievable non-sense.

  33. Mazza Says:

Henry was injured. He was only player who could have potentially made a difference. What’s your point?

  34. SachinG Says:

I went to a pub to see this live. Unfortunately, there were only a few Arsenal fans and we were out numbered by Bolton fans. Those Bolton fans seemed to be complaining about Arsenal’s physical play. I guess since Bolton were missing their regular thugs, they believed they were an angel of a team.
Strange game really. Neither team really played well in the first half but we should have had the lead only if Reyes could have shot it home. I still can’t believe this was the same guy who scored that beautiful left footed rocket against Chelsea a few years ago.

I did think we could have gotten away with a 0-0 tie but that goal seemed to come out of nothing. And once they scored, well didn’t look like any one could have saved it. But this year we have lost 3 times to Chelsea and twice to Bolton. I am tired of trying to make excuses for Arsenal losing. Really tired. Was it only a few years ago that Bolton used to field a second string team in the F.A Cup because they wanted to focus on the league? Bolton used to fight for relegation in those days. Sam A. was always critized for not taking the F.A Cup seriously. And now it seems Arsenal have had to resort to making light of the F.A Cup now because the top 4 is important.

Yes the top 4 is very important. I understand that. But we can’t win with a full strength team against Bolton. Did Wenger really expect his second string side to win against Bolton (who were missing players as well)? Ok. But why did he field Henry for the Carling Cup which was meant for the youngsters? Did he feel that Arsenal had more chance to win the Carling Cup than the F.A Cup?

And now it is down to the Madrid game.

  35. tesseract1023 Says:

Why do people always blame the familiar faces and ignore the obvious?

Senderos was completely to blame for the goal today, there is no question in my mind. Watch the footage if you still have it TiVo’d or taped. As Sol is tracking back into the box, he sees Stelios coming through and points to him - more than once - as he is instructing Senderos to mark him. As the cross comes through, Sol does what he is supposed to do, mark the man immediately in front of him, and he turns around to see Senderos’ man Stelios totally unmarked for the diving header.

Whether you like Sol or Senderos, niether, or both, it is obvious they do NOT play well together. We desperately missed Lauren and Toure today in the back four.

  36. stag133 Says:

    I doubt Henry was injured.
    Where was Pires & Bergkamp?

So you are telling me that the CARLING CUP is more important than the FA CUP?
We fielded a stronger team for the Carling Cup match.

Bolton fielded a weakened team as well…
Pires and Bergkamp could easily have made a difference… how would we know? They weren’t on the bench and did we bring in any subs?
Nobody came in off the bench?!

And we have folks saying its the right thing to do fielding a weaker squad because the league is more important??
What kind of logic is that?
Let’s fold up the tent in the CL too…
don’t want anyone injured for the league matches.

  37. stag133 Says:

I guess we’ll never know if Bergy or Pires could have made any difference… they weren’t even on the bench and NO SUBS came on.
I’d take EITHER over Hleb or Flamini or Diaby.
They both have DONE it under pressure and won titles… the other 3 have done f-all in their careers added up together.
We fielded a weak team. Its fact.

  38. stag133 Says:

    Forget the Madrid games.
They are going to blow us off the pitch… TWICE.

We fielded a stronger team for the CC than the FA Cup… how screwed up is that?

  39. Ozzy Says:

You guy complained about lacking heart aainst Everton well this was alot of heart from the youngsters plus Ljungberg and even Sol. Sometimes I feel Sol would have made a better captain than TH14….

The youngsters will come good and when they do people will take notice. Diaby looks very good but definitely needs a season under him. Watch him be regular starter with Cesc next season. Which I believe will render Gilberto surplus to requirements.

Gilbert is very good prospect although I felt he played better against Wigan. Djourou also looks very much a Rio Ferdinand type of defender more elegance and skill and less of a physical presence like Sol.

Van Persie and Reyes both missed good opportunities today but then so did Henry against Wigan…

Senderos actually played a decent game. AW declared before the game that priority lies in not winning the CL but qualifying for it ie 4th place!! I think its wise decision. I do think this performance against Bolton might be the type of performance that may just kick start our season similar to how Liverpool kick started theirs after defeat to Crystal Palace in the Carling Cup.

Come on you guys support the club in its hour of need - what do you guys get out of criticizing the team. I mean why not use your energies criticizing teams like Man Utd or Chel$ki or even Liverpool.

We are yet to play Liverpool 2 times this season and Man Utd one more time. I would say 2nd place is still there but realistically yes sure 3rd or 4th would be fine this year for me for I know this team will come good again and very soon.

You know what, stag? Take a break from football and spare us your negativity. Everyone is entitled to his opinion, and is free to express it, but if all you can do is spout hateful nonsense about Arsenal, then you can bloomin’ sod off.

The team is in a transitional phase right now. Even a blind goat can see that. You moan and moan about Arsenal needing to buy proven talent, but what’re we gonna pay for them with? Forget that the board says we have money. That money is a poisoned chalice. Until we move to our new stadium, our hands will continue to be cuffed firmly behind our backs. That we have achieved anything at all in the past is nothing short of a financial miracle. I’m not making excuses, I’m stating facts. The kids performed brilliantly yesterday. They showed more fight and more passion than I’ve seen away from home all season long. If the team continues to put in such efforts on the road, sooner or later, we’ll begin to get the results we deserve.

Anytime I visit this site now, it’s all I can do to keep from tearing my hair out. How in blazes can you expect your team to be on a high all day, all year, all season, every season? Even if you’re playing a computer game in cheat mode, the AI will still kick your ass on occassion.

I’m backing the team and the manager to come good. No matter how this season ends, I’ll be here next season, and the season after that, and the season after that ad infinitum.

  41. Ozzy Says:

Good am glad someone is talking sense - sometimes I feel like a loner as far as positivity it concerned. I’m glad you said what you did.

  42. pirate Says:

I loved the way Diaby took out Bolton’s best player, Campo, at the first available opportunity in the second half - Keown must have been proud.

I also loved the way Gilbert and the rest of the back four actually managed to play offside and raise their arms in unison.

  43. Mazza Says:

He definately looked injured against Wigan. You could tell with his body language when he came off. He was clutching his hamstring after that foolhardy 50 yard dash to close down the wigan keeper.

We were in the Carling Cup Semi-final, whereas yesterday was the fourth round. F.A cup is a crap shoot as much as the champion league. Bottom line is the team we put on the pitch yesterday, bar Henry, contained our most threatening bunch of players this season. Bergkamp and Pires have done f-all this season, especially away from home, and I don’t care what they did in 2001 or 2002, it was extremely likely they were gonna do f-all again. Very good management in my book. I think Wenger thinks Bergkamp and Pires are surplus to requirements really but diplomatically used the “rested” card.

P.S- I know your thinking what the hell has Hleb and Diaby but they played well. I always make sure to watch the match before shooting from the hip. Don’t know, you may have caught the highlights by now.

  44. Curtisimo Says:

There’s a big difference between losing & playing well & losing like we have been doing (w/o determination & effort).

From all accounts yesterday we played better than Bolton & had more chances. They took theirs, we didn’t, with Van Persie hitting the bar at one point.

Moan & groan all y’all want but 6 inches lower & it’s 1-0 Arsenal & maybe Bolton have to press forward & we catch them on the break for 2-0 or hang on 1-0.

Also, we actually played well in the dreaded 4-5-1 too. Not that I’d like to see us go to that formation of course, but we played with a “weakened” team in a formation that doesn’t suit our style of football & still created more chances AND matched Bolton’s physicality AWAY from home .

I’ll plant myself in the camp that says that the youngsters did pretty well yesterday & while some of y’all will say “that they’re just not good enough,” I’ll throw a caveat in parentheses on the end of that statement: “they’re just not good enough (right now & b/c of poor finishing yesterday).”

On the bright side, my New York Rangers trounced the Penguins & the Golden Brat, Sidney Crosby, 7-1, yesterday.

And finally, I’ll predict that Henry isn’t going anywhere. If we beat Real, and I still think we can certainly do that, I think Henry stays for sure.
Is Barca going to offer him a 5 yr. deal like we are said to have done?

  45. Curtisimo Says:

I agree with you as well. Sometimes results aren’t about assembling together the best talent. Some around here would like to see an Arsenal version of the Galaxicos.

But who really does? Maybe Chelsea, but Man U & Liverpool’s rosters aren’t really filled with this perceived plethora of truly world beaters. Yes, they all have players who are in national teams but that isn’t really saying anything. If people think that, we’re also talking about the same people who thought Peter Crouch was a useless tool. Now all of a sudden that he’s playing at ‘Pool, he put in a few goals & they’ve started getting results, all of a sudden he’s world class b/c ‘Pool’s winning? Please.

I just too much has been made of our ‘decline.’ A few breaks here & there & all of a sudden the doom & gloom & end of Arsenal rubbish is a lot different.

That was the problem with the Invincibles season. The only way to go from there was down. Now, trophyless seasons are ‘disastrous.’ Hell, even last year when we DID win a trophy, people still complained.

Up the Arse, Come on you Gooners

  46. gerard Says:

If we can take something positive out of this game, it’s that now we can focus on what really matters and that’s placing a CL position in the EPL for next year.

I read the game in “live text”, very frustrating hitting refresh every 30 secs or so but from what I read I honestly believe we just lost this game and not because of bumbling buffoonery but because of a lucky bounce for Bolton.

  47. stag133 Says:

    Who are you?
    why anonymous?
I don’t wish to take a break from football, but thanx for the advice.
I will continue to express my opinion. Its America after all… Arsenal America.

You tear your hair out when you visit the site, I do it when I see how piss poor our team has become. It didn’t have to be this way.

The kids did NOT perform brilliantly. Sorry, but thats an exaggeration. They accounted well for themselves. I watched the match replay in the early hours of the morning… but I could tell they didn’t play “brilliantly”. Lets not get carried away.

I will be here throughout this season, at Highbury in March… at the Grove next year… I’ll still call it like I see it, whether we are 5th, 10th or relegated.

If you don’t like it, don’t respond. You don’t have to read my entries. You can simply NOT READ THEM. Thats up to you.

  48. stag133 Says:

Diaby breaks Campo’s foot, and you love that?
Thats not what football is about. If it happened to Henry how would you feel?

  49. pirate Says:

I don’t love that he broke the guys foot, nobody deserves that, but taking him out was the right thing to do - I expect Vieira would have made the made challenge.
