As Newcastle is my second team (we all have our crosses to bear), one of the things I appreciate is Arsenal’s relative lack of public bloodletting. Apparently no longer content to let others have all fun, Chairman Hill-Wood has given his thoughts on Henry’s contract offer and why Pires, Ljungberg and Sol Campbell are past their sell-by date. Hill-Wood’s comments are particularly unwelcome in what may prove to be a season short on the glittering hardware we have all come to anticipate. Trumpeting a “shudder”-inducing contract offer in the media recalls the Man U Board’s letter blaming Roy Keane for a rise in ticket prices. Nothing good can come of it. What is wrong with “no comment until the contract negotiations are over?” This is not the way to lure Henry to Ashburton Grove. Just offer TH14 the 120,000/wk or whatever he wants and call it good business.
The Chairman’s further dig at Sol, Freddie & Bob is unlikely to restore battered team confidence. Hill-Wood may be thinking the same things that some of us are saying (and according to many fans, he may be right), but putting these musings on blast as the Chairman is misguided. Players do not respond well to public humiliation. It also smacks of CYA for Arsenal’s lack of CL progress — no introspection needed at the Board level for tightfistedness and lack of vision.
I don’t have any problem with him feeling the way that he does, but I am hoping that the Board response will extend beyond calling out our current players.

I find it refreshing to here him say what we all know and I hope it enables those vet players to give half a shite and play somewhat better, particularly as many are up for new contracts.
I realize it may be politically in correct but damn how can we fault him for telling the truth. He’s in a no win position. If he says anything he’s going to catch it either way. So yes maybe better to say nothing than the truth - it’s a sad state of affairs the world and the egos in it.

I have no problem with this . . . these guys are professionals, they get paid hug amount of $$$ to play the game and what comes with it is glory and criticism. Wenger’s been the “good cop” by being positive . . . PHW is the “bad cop”

I think you are 100% correct in that it should NEVER be done in public. Behind closed doors, fine. Why air your dirty laundry in public? What positive comes from saying these things about your players.
Do you think that makes Arsenal MORE attractive to incoming players in any way? It makes it far less appealing when contract negotiations are done publicly, and when Mr.Hill-Wood takes a swipe at 3 of his best players over the last few years.
What is going on over there?
Totally unprofessional. Perhaps there is some chaos going on OFF the field as well.

Agree that while it is not wise to comment on internal ramblings - it was correct of PHW to disclose Arsenal’s hand of offering a deal already to TH14 and that financially it is as good as it gets anywhere and I am sure it is….
Arsenal have also shown some ambition by signing players albeit young talent but young expensive talent at that. What would you fans rather have Arsenal buy no one or atleast buying some genuine talent choice is yours?
I believe they will also buy in summer after the world cup and feel they will buy proven talent around the 25-27 years age group but maybe only 1 or 2 players at most.
As for TH14 I do believe he will stay - there is a certain affinity towards London that he has. And in London and indeed the UK he would only play for one team - ARSENAL!!

Let me play devil’s advocate for a second.
Nothing has stopped Arsenal players from airing their woes to the press. And its obvious from their performances that they don’t get enough private humble pie, so why not side with the supporters who’ve been watching this shite week in and out.
I think lots of Gooners felt vindicated by the comments. And if a player wants to come to The Arsenal to be comfy and coddled they can piss of to…well, no one coddles them like we do. We’ve been more patient with players than any other club I can think of. Heck, we congratulated Ash for his tapping scandal and subsequent appeals by giving him a raise!
“No comment” is fine if it works both ways. I’m sure Dein & Co. would have been happy to keep it tight-lipped. Me too, as its the best policy. But the continuous Barca rumors, the ongoing Vieira saga, the complaints from veterans who have enjoyed much here and the depressing displays on the field speak loud and clear to me and hopefully future Gunners: mind your crest, lads.
