UPDATE - Attention Arsenal American Footballers! Portsmouth
Mar 24

Ozzy’s previous post was interesting, of the discussion of who should we buy in for the next season. Many familiar names were mentioned, players like Nolan, Reo-Coker etc. Who do look impressive, and have been playing well this season.

What I want to point out here - you don’t buy players who we all KNOW.

Why? Because if a player looks good and everybody knows about it, they are going to be EXPENSIVE.

There is a theory that English players are expensive. I think the truth is more like - players who play in a major leagues (EPL, La Liga, Series A) are expensive.

Because their talent is exposed to everyone. Along with the media hype, naturally the managers of their clubs would ask for more if you want to nick them away.

That’s why under Wenger, 9 out of 10 players we bought, we had not heard of them much. We are blessed with a manager who knows more of the talents worldwide than those just playing in the major leagues. Why you think the West Ham boss critised us for not buying enough English players? Because he doesn’t have the network or knowledge of the players outside of UK. Would he be able to unearth a Freddie Ljungberg? A Kolo Toure? A Petit? A Pires? An Eboue? NO. So he’s paid 7 milliion GBP for Dean Ashton, while Wenger got Van Persie for just 2 million GBP.

So my best guess is, just like Hleb, Diaby, Adebayor, should we sign someone in the summer, chance is that few of us have head of them before. But I wouldn’t worry about their quality. Wenger does not know everything, but I’m pretty sure he knows much more of the quality players than us.
