Starting Monday, GolTV becomes a must for all Arsenal fans. On March 27 the first installment of Arsenal TV arrives. Check your local listings for exact times, but every Monday they will show a half hour of Arsenal programming with interviews, behind-the-scenes stuff, highlights, etc. Then they’ll have the weekend match, then another half hour of post-match highlights and other goodies. Yes, the match will be a couple of days old, but if Fox didn’t have it, here’s your chance - plus the other programming will be worth watching.
I spoke with the guys at GolTV on Friday and that was how they described the programming. Obviously I haven’t watched it yet, but any Arsenal related programming is worth checking out.
Don’t have GolTV? Dude, order the right package or start talking to your cable provider. It’s a great network with non-stop football. You can watch top notch Italian and Spanish League football every weekend. Go to GolTV for more info.

If Thierry is to stay expect one well know name to come to the club, more to appease him then anything else. If he goes then AW will use the money wisely and by the new TH, somone we have never heard of.
March 24th, 2006 at 7:18 am
Andez…
Agree that we don’t have to buy someone’s “name”. However… what is wrong with actually buying someone who’s talent is actually PROVEN? Sometimes you should buy the BMW, because you KNOW for fact that its a great car that will run well for many years to come.
You can’t always buy a Yugo and try and soup it up into a great car.
If he wants to attract real talent, and keep the best players we have, sometimes… not often or always… you are going to have to match their “ambition” and bring in legitimate proven players to compliment the stars you have.
There has to be a balance. You can’t always shop in the bargain bin for gems… and try to compete with Chelsea, United, Barcelona and the best of the world.
March 24th, 2006 at 7:18 am
I couldnt agree more with you Andez. Spot on.
March 24th, 2006 at 7:40 am
Agree, we dont need to buy a lot of players as the attack seems to be gelling. good options up front, good wingers, good midfield(if Gilberto stops giving away passes which he seems to have sorted out lately, good full backs(hope A.Cole will stay). If Campbell can start up that solid partnership with K.Toure again then the defence is good. Maybe we need a long term keeper to replace Lehmann (Stories about some keeper Yohann Pele-6 foot 4 inches, arsenal watched him 20 times)and a central midfielder who can defend and attack, maybe Yaya Toure or Baptista(if he is part of the Madrid clearout). That all gives us strenght in depth, youth and experience. AND KEEP HENRY!
March 24th, 2006 at 8:50 am
has anyone evr seen mikael arteta from everton
he is a gr8 plyr and
he is not english ,also he is at very young age.
so i reckon we should go for hiM,BY THE HLEB ROCKS
March 24th, 2006 at 9:05 am
Sour grapes. That hypocrit Pardew admitted he was working a deal for Adebayor before Arsenal came in and swooped him from under him. So he signs Ashton as a second choice.
March 24th, 2006 at 9:31 am
While, I’d love us to go out and sign Ballack and Gallas we have to be realistic enough to know that for the top players, playing regularly at top teams, Arsenal is not a step forward - they simply won’t come. That’s why our transfer targets come from Stuttgart and Sevilla.
So I think it’s more about availability than money. Arsene’s mantra is more or less that if there is a player available who would improve the team then we will try and sign them.
We’ll never know the full ins and outs of the Baptista transfer saga, but I suggest we got royally fooked over by the player and his agent. As his career has stalled badly in the politics as Real, we may yet pick him up in the Bernabeu reshuffle…hungrier than before.
Our squad looks ok, but the quality can defninitely improve - the team does look like it’s evolving, but it’s not going to win the league next year in it’s current state - and I think Arsene will still be on the look out for those 2 or 3 quality 24-28 years olds he promised us last summer.
March 24th, 2006 at 9:34 am
Arteta is a decentish player, but Fabregas is much better already. We all know that there is a physical element to the EPL, so having another passing midget in the engine room may not be the best idea.
March 24th, 2006 at 9:52 am
The problem with spoting a Cesce or RVP that they might leave us after they become a big name. Even if Arsenal make profit from this, as a fan I care about the quality of the game and the results rather the books for Arsenal.
I think, we need keep Henry and bring big name just to create balance in the team. Cole should also stay !
March 24th, 2006 at 10:16 am
A few things:
Big players have always wanted to come to The Arsenal to play under Wenger, play our brand of football, and play with our stars. Very few, if not 100% happy where they are, would turn down a chance to play with Thierry Henry. Those that do, go to Chelsea at their peril. Can you say, “sub SWP at 20 minutes against Fulham?”
Secondly, no one leaves the Arsenal unless Wenger wants them to go. If Cesc and RvP demand huge prices and Wenger thinks its best for the team and the lads are down with it, then maybe. But who, really, has wanted to leave in their prime?
Wenger doesn’t NEED a high-priced proven talent. What he needs to do is keep those he’s created into proven talent around long enough to keep the factory producing.
March 24th, 2006 at 11:08 am
“But who, really, has wanted to leave in their prime?”
ahem anelka ahem :p
March 24th, 2006 at 11:15 am
Arsene wisely let Anelka leave. Anelka’s poor attitude has made a mess of what could’ve been a phenomenal career (Anelka has the pace of Henry, but is even bigger and stonger). He has been a journeyman ever since.
March 24th, 2006 at 11:23 am
Stag, i’m not saying we shouldn’t buy the established stars. What i was trying to do was to think of the logic behind AW’s buying policy. U can’t say it doesn’t make sense can u?
It’s all about value for money. I know we should try our best to compete with Cheslea, but we shouldn’t allow ourselves to get dragged into their spending mentality. ‘Cos we can’t win this way.
Walcott’s purchase was a good case study. Why are we pay that much money for a teenager? ‘Cos Chelsea got involved, they vowed to outbid every offer we bid. So there’s no way we can beat them with the money game. We did get Walcott in the end, but not without an expense - paying out an inflated price.
Now u imagine we try to bid for an established star. Ballack for example, now he’s going to do a Bosman. But there is still the wage and salary to concern. We could have offer him 100,000 GBP per week, but guess what Chelsea would do next?
It’s not yet another blame Chelsea game. It’s the harsh REALITY. It cannot be more REALITY than this REALITY - that Chelsea has been almost singlehandly ruining the transfer market.
Flash back to the era prior to Roman’s arrival at the Premiership. Man U was the biggest spender in the game (English wise). But even them could not have bought everyone. And they wouldn’t step into a bid when other clubs were bidding someone. At least they didn’t do that too often.
They had a hugh spending power, but they didn’t have an unlimited spending power. That’s why Alan Shearer would get nicked away by Newcastle, Gazza decided to join Spurs. When we bought Kanu, Overmars, Henry the rather famous players at that time, they didn’t step in with that attitude “whatever Arsenal offer, we would top it”.
But now it’s a different story. If we are going to buy a star, let’s make it a TOP class one. But with Chelsea around, we would never stand a chance. To the best we would be able to get the second class stars. But what’s the point spending big money for the second best? Might as well gamble on the youngsters, at least they will stand a chance to become the TOP players one day.
March 24th, 2006 at 11:24 am
my comment above.
March 24th, 2006 at 11:36 am
btw, i hope Liverpool will beat the crap out of the money team in the FA Cup semi. Particular after watching their victory over Newcastle. Joe Cole… man, he’s English, he’s not supposed to DIVE…. and even if he had to, u don’t play acting in such a disgraceful way. And they say Pires is a diver. Yeah he did dive at times, but did u ever see an Oscar winning facial expression like Joe Cole in Pires?
March 24th, 2006 at 3:23 pm
if it isn’t broken then why fix it
the boss has done us well for the last decade and the club has the silverware to prove it
the last year has been hard but there are clear signs the bosses vision is starting to pay off (yet again)
i hope that TH14 stays but if he goes the club will survive and continue to do well
just because you have money doesn’t mean you have to spend it - that’s a dutch man talking
March 24th, 2006 at 3:25 pm
i liked Wenger response to him - he wasn’t asking for passports when he called me looking for talent
March 24th, 2006 at 4:28 pm
What USGunner said.
March 24th, 2006 at 4:43 pm
Well, we’re going to need someone to replace Freddie Ljungberg at the end of the season as it’s becoming increasingly apparent the swede cannot string together three games together without getting injured. It’s a shame but you can’t base your team around someone who is injured so often.
Bastian schweinsteger would be fit the bill nicely.
March 24th, 2006 at 6:03 pm
Ashley Cole wants to leave.
Petit Anelka Overmars all left in their prime…
Yes… we are soooooooooooo bloody wonderful that nobody wants to leave.
We are having this conversation because Vieira left, and Henry might leave.
Cesc is OUTTA HERE when he feels like he wants to go back to Spain.
Get those damned RED glasses off!!!!!
March 24th, 2006 at 6:06 pm
Andez,
just because Chelsea exists, doesn’t mean we can’t buy established players.
For the most part, Wenger has bought well.
We’ve grown our stars… but there is NO HARM in actually balancing the team with a few proven players aged 25-27… PROVEN.
Chelsea isn’t interested in buying every player in the world. Thats not what’s happening. We just don’t seem to get ANY player that is proven.
It has hurt us badly this year. Wenger has admitted making mistakes. If we lose Henry, this will be part of the reason. That will be the biggest mistake of all.
March 24th, 2006 at 6:11 pm
Gerard.
FORESIGHT.
If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
I heard this refrain in the mid to late 80’s with the Boston Celtics basketball team. Star players in the team… Bird, McHale, Parish, DJ, Ainge…
There was a visible decline after the team won the Championship in 1986… even in winning… some folks saw the writing on the wall.
It wasn’t “BROKE”, it wasn’t fixed… so since then, not ONE title has been won.
Foresight to see that adjustments need to be made, even when winning. We won the league and were unbeaten… I too said … don’t fix it.
But we should have made improvements THEN. Its a lot easier to maintain your crown at the top, than it is to get there after you’ve fallen.
See the areas of need, and react early.
you have to IMPROVE every year. Get better or get passed by.
March 24th, 2006 at 6:31 pm
Ashley Cole wants to leave? What else did he tell you? Did he go one about his honeymoon?
Ashley Cole was pissed about his contract, took the champagne bottle out of his mouth long enough to have had dinner with the enemy and got busted. Now he’s on a crusade to save face. Guarantee you if he leaves he does under extreme duress. And if he does, it’ll be Wenger’s choice. Keep in mind, Wenger never keeps anyone who doesn’t want to be here. We’re not Man City.
Anelka was causing problems. So was Vieira. You have to admit that the two are related in a few ways. Anelka went on to be a French international also ran. Wenger put the ball in Vieira’s court, and could have taken the upper hand but chose not to. The details, Stag, the details.
And last anyone heard, Henry loves the club and wants to stay. Everything else is conjecture and Spanish lies. What the future holds is, well, the future. As far as the recent past, our vets want to be here.
There is no way you can tell me that this club doesn’t hold onto who they want. My glasses are red tinted by default, pal.
March 24th, 2006 at 6:32 pm
Hleb and Walcott?
March 24th, 2006 at 7:40 pm
Yep, we’ve got Hleb and Walcott. Hleb should be first choice on either wing from now on.
But, what if Pires leaves and Freddie gets injured? That leaves us with only the inconsistent Reyes and then we go back to playing one of our central midfielders on the wing.
I’m also thinking of Wenger’s new 4-5-1 system that freddie works so well in. It would be nice to find a duplicate of Freddie or someone who can play that role when he gets injured. It would be a shame to bin that promising formation just because one player is struck down.

Stag133,
I agree with with what you speak in the example you sight.
NOW: The way I see it, is that changes are being made because Wenger has that foresight to know that a team means a team. I think this young team has the potential to cause Chel$kium grief, even next year.
THEN: Those changes have caused us to slip in the league as new blood is brought into the team. Their just getting the gist of this English game and one another. I think he’s picked some real quality players, yes they still have to be proven.
It’s only been one, now two seasons since the glorious years of undefeat. I think changes are happening and they look promising.
I agree that for now we need TH14, one of the greatest to ever have played this game. It worries me some days but when I watch him play I’m always soothed - truth is his DB10 day will also come in time.
I realize in another year I could look like a horse’s a55 but as a fan I have little effect alone. I’ve elected to trust Wenger.
Call me Myopic
Unfortunately one mans myopia can’t be another man’s foresight - like garbage and treasure.
March 24th, 2006 at 9:33 pm
Interesting article. I was somewhat bemused by his comments on being Catholic and spirituality. Although I couln’t understand what he said he did belive in, too post-modern.
Alexander the Great as a sport icon works for me.
March 24th, 2006 at 9:35 pm
I still think Ruud v.Nistelrooy, maybe Rooney’s dive from last year gets the Oscar.
March 24th, 2006 at 11:57 pm
Overmars went on to finish his career in utter mediocrity at Barcelona (yes, Barcelona was mediocre then). Petit couldn’t even hold down a place in Barca’s team, then went to Chelsea where he was very mediocre. Neither was ever as good as when they were Gunners, nor did they ever enjoy the same level of success they had at AFC. Oh yeah, and we got 25-30 million pounds.
I’ve already commented on how Anelka’s sputtered and he became a total gypsy. Oh yeah, and we got 20-25 million pounds.
Cole may leave, and he certainly is in his prime. However, I personally believe that his leaving has little to do with football and more to do with the fact that he is a greedy peckerhead (legal definition) and other clubs can afford or are willing to pay him more. Oh yeah, we’ll probably get 15 million pounds.
It’s still up in the air as to how Viera will fair. He may perform well for Juventus for a number of years, but from our perspective, he certainly hadn’t been performing up to his peak any longer with us. In my opinion, he wanted out, which meant it was time to let him go. Oh yeah, and we got 13-14 million pounds.
I freely admit to being a big fan of Arsene Wenger, so maybe I am biased. However, I think the vast majority of Gooners would agree with me that it has been Wenger’s personnel policies that have built the teams that have made our Club such a success. Now, after a decade of undisputed quality and class, you want him to change his policies and behaviors? In my mind, that just doesn’t make any sense.
March 25th, 2006 at 1:47 am
Andez I agree with you and AW is one manager who has suffered signing British talent such as Pennant or Jeffers for inflated prices…
A few months ago I also wrote an article on who AW can sign which included some Ajax players as well who would probably come much cheaper but are much more talented then the locals…
How about Yaya Toure - relatively unknown here in England…or AW can even watch during World Cup as I am sure we will see an emergence of a few new stars….
March 25th, 2006 at 3:42 am
Hey Mazza, be fair to Freddie. Why he’s injuried so often? Let’s look at his size… then let’s look at the way he approches every game - full of running, never shy of physical contact, got stuck in… Obviously a player like this will more likely get hurt than those who standing around ball watching.
Personally i would like to see Freddie stays as long as he can. This soft of player inspires teammates around him. I mean, with a few more players running their socks off every game like that, wouldn’t it make his teammate feel ashamed that if he still standing around?
March 25th, 2006 at 3:43 am
i heard that chelsea is interested in Yaya as well. But he seems to be more keen joining up with his brother Kolo at Arsenal. Let’s hope he really does!
March 25th, 2006 at 5:51 am
Hi guys,
great thoughts again, glad to see people still have faith in sir arsene! especially like the comment about pardew being jealous! if you have a spare minute, please check out my site, its http://thearseclub.blogspot.com
cheers, a narrow win against pompey will do me fine! come on you gooners!
March 25th, 2006 at 7:41 am
Pompey beat a half interested and very weakened Hammers side who were playing it safe for the FA Cup.
I expect another lathering like at Fulham, and anything less will be a disaster.
March 25th, 2006 at 7:47 am
Up the Arse..
Chris and Scotty I need some explanation not an apology. No excuses and what happen last weekend?

March 25th, 2006 at 8:46 am
i see a draw on the card
1-1
March 25th, 2006 at 9:15 am
We went looking for you twice, l_G! We waited inside T-Birds for quite some time before and after the match. We went downstairs, too.
No Kelvin, no l_G.
March 25th, 2006 at 9:23 am
Very nice. Now…can we stop kissing his ass in the press?
Tuesday is our chance to banish his name to the history books once and for all. I sure as hell hope all this “grateful praise and apologetic tone” doesn’t cause us to let it slip by.
Thank you, thank you, thank you. Okay? If they don’t stop soon they’ll have nothing to print when the geezer shuffles off.
March 25th, 2006 at 9:28 am
Tough game for sure. With Portsmouth fighting to avoid the drop. Arsenal will have one eye on midweek game against Juve. Our away form is still patchy. If our defence can handle the runs of Lua Lua, we shud be able to keep a clean sheet. And Henry to pop one in at the other end.
1-0 to Arsenal.
March 25th, 2006 at 9:29 am
No idea what will happen today. We’ve looked tight and strong in the past few weeks, but we’ve surely got one eye on Tuesday at home.
We need goals from someone else besides Titi today. I would love to see Ade or Bobby pick up their share so we can rest our star.
This is one of the toughest positions this club has ever been in: desperate for points in the league and a result three days later in the CL - all to hold onto our beloved Henry. We can’t hold anything back.
I see a 1-1 draw, too. But the way luck has been going for us, I wouldn’t be shocked nicking this one with an opportunistic goal.
Up the Arse, Kiss the Crest, Keep the FAITH!
March 25th, 2006 at 9:31 am
Love G…
partially my fault… I do apologize.
I realized that you gave me your cell number… and I left it in my hotel on the day of the match.
As Scotty said… we did go to T-Birds looking for both you and Kelvin, and back and forth a few times both pre and post match to the Arsenal Tavern & T-Birds.
My sincere apologies for leaving the number at my hotel, that would have made things a bit easier! But we did look for you from about 12:30 til about 2:15… and we were around after the match for over an hour.
Another day… Another trip…
and perhaps we can meet up at Scotty’s favorite teams matches in NJ… we can go see some great RED BULL football!!!!!!!
March 25th, 2006 at 9:34 am
I believe we have turned the corner… and we are starting to gel a bit with the current players.
This match will be a test of that theory. We desperately need to keep picking up ALL 3 POINTS, and putting the pressure on Spurs, Bolton and Blackburn.
I like us to WIN again… fairly comfortably.
2-0.
March 25th, 2006 at 9:37 am
My mistake Scotty, apparenlty this was lifted from Vieira’s autobiography and is not really ‘news’. I thought the stuff from Wenger the other day was a bit better, ‘you have to let the player go when the player can longer do the business’ sort of thing..
March 25th, 2006 at 9:47 am
There has been a lot of articles recently on the club’s offical site and elsewhere about Patrick’s reception at Highbury. I get it. He was a massive player on this ground only a few months ago, his leaving crumpled our club, we should be grateful for his 9 years of service, etc.
I just hope we don’t drop to our knees and let him dribble around us, though getting it out now in the press so that all this love can mutate into a healthy animosity could be the point.
I just want him out of our heads!
March 25th, 2006 at 9:49 am
The very first thing I thought of when I heard that the Metros had changed their name to this abomination was your reaction.
Damn you.
March 25th, 2006 at 10:16 am
yup, can’t wait to see Cesc cement him in the first 5 minutes!
March 25th, 2006 at 11:03 am
due to heavy rain, pending pitch inspection…
March 25th, 2006 at 11:15 am
Game postponed.
March 25th, 2006 at 11:35 am
TODAY’S MATCH POSTPONED
DUE TO WATERLOGGED PITCH.
NOT SURE WHEN THEY MAKE IT UP…
but that sucks!
IT WAS ON TV, AND WE’RE PLAYING WELL.
ALL FOCUS NOW ON TUESDAY…
March 25th, 2006 at 11:40 am
BOTH eyes on Tuesday now, and a fortunate rest. I’m fine with it outside of wanting to see the game live on TV.
Anything can happen in the replay, but Pompey are bang on form. If they are relegated by the time we see them again, it could do their heads in enough for an easy 3 points.
Its going to be tough to see us down the table without having our say, but Goodbye Juve Tuesday is the focus and everyone will be healthy.
Well played, rain!
March 25th, 2006 at 1:05 pm
At least the boys have more rest time and avoid picking up new injuries with this postponement. Juve still has to play Roma later today.
March 26th, 2006 at 9:05 am
Any idea if GolTV Canada are planning to do something similar? It is a great thing for the Club and its supporters to get this kind of exposure — just hope we get it north of the border!
March 26th, 2006 at 9:14 am
It is non-stop football on GOLTV.
I didn’t know about the Arsenal TV scenario… but thats fantastic. They show tons of Italian footy… thats why I know its a JOKE when someone opines that Vieira has played poorly this season… I’ve seen many of his matches on GolTV.
March 26th, 2006 at 9:15 am
10 minutes to go, Bolton down one to Boro 3-2.
This looks good for us.
Gotta go to breakfast!!!!
Hope they hang on!!!
March 26th, 2006 at 9:18 am
I didn’t even get down the stairs and Bolton have tied it 3-3.
Can’t watch… don’t wanna see it… Gotta go!
March 26th, 2006 at 10:17 am
Setting my VCR for this! Saw it yesterday and the first thing I thought was, “here comes the U.S. push”.
And way to leave out the Tuesday 4PM programming, Rick. Well played.
March 26th, 2006 at 10:28 am
The majority of the Paddy criticisms come from Juve supporters. They think he’s half-hearting it. Sound familiar? I tend to think they’re a little misguided seeing as he was apparently brought in for “goals”. Paddy a scoring threat? Not in that crowd. They’ve got enough.
I watched him play against Roma yesterday and he gives the impression that he’s always in conservation mode. He’s a little easier to dispossess these days it seems, but all in all his long legs allow him to keep pace without looking like he’s working hard. There isn’t a sense that he’s controlling the game, as Cameronesi and Nedved do most of the heavy lifting, but his role seems to suit him: just play.
Gol TV rocks, and its great to finally have it in English. When I first got it, the commentators were all speaking Spanish!
March 26th, 2006 at 11:40 am
Postponed games are like sex and headaches.
Like good sex, I get anxious waiting for what?s to come on game day. I keep away from my computer, don?t watch BBC News to avoid the news ticker score lines, I generally get more excited as the time draws nearer to kick off.
So yesterday, the game was to be played at midnight in Canada as they played a more important tidily-winks tournament during the live broadcast, so we had to wait. Much of the day, I preoccupy myself with things that need to be done. About half an hour before broadcast time out comes the jersey, I fluff up the pillows on the sofa, go into to the kitchen to make sandwiches to snack on during the match, the beers have been chilling for sometime. Five minutes before the broadcast, I set up the home entertainment system to maximize effects for a soccer match.
I?m ready to go, got the jersey on, slurping down my glass of bitters, the climax is coming, 10, 9, 8? when the announcer sadly states like a bad sex, no game it?s postponed. Now isn?t that a lot like being told no sex because I have a headache.
Damn how can a premiership team not have a pitch that?s suitable for play even in the rain?
Oh well, at least the lads get to rest before Tuesday match, where we know the pitch will be alright.
March 26th, 2006 at 12:12 pm
GolTV Canada is announcing, on their website, that Arsenal TV will be part of their broadcast schedule.
They have it scheduled for 4:00pm - 6:30 pm Eastern on Monday - March 27th, and replayed on Tuesday (28th) morning starting at 10:00 pm EST.
to read more visit the website: < http://www.goltvcanada.com/index.html >
Can’t wait!
March 26th, 2006 at 1:07 pm
Let’s hope there is a North American push. maybe we’ll get even better coverage (it’s getting better every day).
As Nike sells the jerseys this also hasn’t been a problem. I still need Gunner beer glasses and a bobble or mini flag for the mirror on the car, maybe license plate covers. My bedroom already looks good in Arsenal wallpaper even if my wife hates it and has started to sleep on the couch. Now she’s pissed I want to bring the large screen TV into the bedroom or get another for it.
Jeez, as you can see I lack for little except sanity maybe - it’s okay I’m an artist.
MORE< MORE< MORE…
March 26th, 2006 at 3:30 pm
Spoken by a Vieira detractor, so I’ll take your comments with a grain of salt!
He looks like he is in conservation mode because he plays so effortlessly. He takes 1 step to the ordinary man’s two… he floats like a butterfly and stings like a bee. Cesc ain’t gonna dispossess him, thats for sure, he’ll swat little fly boy away like he’s 18… oh yeah… he is 18.
Let’s hope we win at home on Tuesday… or at least a 0-0 draw, so there is some serious pressure on Juve for the return match.
Gotta find out where they are showing it here in Boston! It seems like I will be in the ememies nest in the North End of Boston… thats little Italy.
Oh well… roll on Tuesday!
March 26th, 2006 at 3:39 pm
MASSIVE goal by Boro in extra time to defeat Bolton 4-3.
This is HUGE for our hopes of taking 4th in the league… as Bolton are now behind us by 2 points with 1 game in hand, and have a difficult schedule to play.
Blackburn snuck by us with a win, but we have a game in hand… one more setback by Bolton, either a draw or defeat, and we will be in FULL CONTROL of our own destiny.
That is simply ALL YOU CAN ASK FOR.
Fantastic result for the Arsenal Football Club, as we inch closer to the 4th spot we desperately need.
March 26th, 2006 at 3:48 pm
Stag, it’s not a joke about Juve fans saying Vieira is playing gash recently. Check the Juventuz forum and you will see that many of them say how good he was at the start of the season compared to now. A few were saying he should be dropped. I was actually quite shocked that these impartial fans felt that way.
Can’t wait till we tear into them on Tuesday. David Platt and Tony Adams, both desperate to make names for themselves, are coming out with the usual spiel about how great Juventus are. Didn’t they say that last year when Liverpool took them out? What about fours year ago when we spanked them at highbury? What about a couple of years ago when Man United tossed them aside in the Delli Alpi?
If we pay them too much respect, they will feed on it and strangle our game. If we’re confident we will destroy them. It depends on our finishing on how much we win by. No regrets lads. No regrets.

Mazza, I’ve seen many of the matches Juventus has played. So I have my own views and they are not uneducated, based on guess-work.
He has not played poorly. Thats utter crap.
I don’t really get how you figure we will destroy them. Based on what? They are top of their league and we are in 6th in ours. They’ve beaten big teams in there league, we are 15 wins and 10 losses in ours.
We could beat them at Highbury. We can beat anyone on a given day… but for folks to say we’ll destroy them, and someone predicted 4-0… what the heck is that based on other than bravado???
Let’s get realistic. A win would be very impressive. A 0-0 draw would be OK… we need to play like we did against Madrid in both ties, with a great deal of effort, emotion and heart.

Yeah, there is a chance that Vieira will do that to Fabregas - especially as the 18-year old is up against a player he has worked iwth and admired. But this is a chance for us to see whether and how far Fabregas has progressed this season. I think that Stag may be a little surprised by how it turns out.

And I thought fourth place was beyond us! Keep the faith!!

Well, they lost 3-0 to AC Milan and drew with them at home. Okay, they beat Inter, a good but not great team. Apart from that who else is there in Italy? Roma are resurgent but hell, even Middlesbrough put them out.
My point is Italy is full of mediocre teams which fall into Juve’s web time after time. These teams do not possess the players, bar a Luco Toni, to unsettle their rythm and get them out of their comfort zone. They will not have experienced players with the style of Hleb and Reyes. It will be tactical fouls all night and with yellow cards being banded about, they’re gonna have to let these dribblers go at some point.
Juve are a good team and are very good at what they do. They have the italian league nailed at this point. My point is every time they come up against a team in europe with a good, pacy attack with players who can track back (unlike Madrid) they look uncomfortable and out of their depth. Arsenal, at the moment anyway, look to play at a completely different speed to juve and it is not unforseeable that we could catch them cold and score a few goals. It will all depend on who exerts their style on the other. Vieira is physical, but could sub-consciously play in a containing manner due to the occasion, and Emerson is a rather passive player despite his size- a bigger version of Gilberto. With this reasoning, I fancy that Cesc and others will get time to turn and feed Henry. Cannavaro gets shown up outside Serie A every season and Thuram is not the defender he was, though he still a class act. If Werder Bremen can get under their with Johan Micoud as their star, then we sure as hell can.
Each to their own.

I predict we will win the tie. Maybe I am foolhardy and reckless. I slightly favour us because the momentum of winning over the last few weeks has pushed us forward. That said, it will be close so weather, a bad pitch (and I am hearing some things about Turin I don’t like), a referre, woodwork etc could change the outcome. There is a thin line between success and failure.
Some people may predict 4-0 to us, others believe we don’t have a prayer. I think we will be hanging on but will get there.

Good, no more injuties. That also means Senderos for Tuesday - Wenger won’t put Sol in with so little practice. Also good, Senderos may not yet be the best centre-back we have, but I am not convinced that Campbell can ever be first choice again.

Well, I believe we will get the chances to win 4-0. If we take them is another matter. With Arsenal though it seems the better the keeper, the more clinical we are. It’s these gits like Pollitt from Wigan that screw us over.
I do not like that pitch story either. Makes it even more imperative we end the tie at highbury. Juve are luck personified at their ground.

There is always the chance of course that this game could be another Inter Milan- play well but somehow lose three nil. Everyone said we were out of our depth after that game and I knew it was bollocks, as we proved at their ground.
Highbury is toy pitch though and all it takes is a few deflections in the area and voila, trezeguet is wheeling away. Senderos particularly worries me in this respect.
I just hope people judge the game on possession and chances and not scoreline. Even our 5-1 in Milan was misleading.

Arteta is a good player - not a great player imo. Between him and Cahill, I would prefer Cahill who wins a fair share of headers despite not being the tallest player around. He has a great engine - tireless worker. Plus he has a habit of scoring goals with his runs into the box. Similar to Ljundberg 2-3 seasons ago. Much as they are good, I doubt Wenger will consider either player though.

Maybe Pardew is lining up for the England job. West Ham produces many excellent English players from their academy but they are sold at exorbitant prices. If Wenger can get them from Barca or other European youth teams on the cheap, why not?
March 26th, 2006 at 6:25 pm
If we win the match, I don’t care at all how it turns out. Hell… I’d like to see Vieira get sent off, so then we’d have a better chance.
Vieira will have a good match. Thats my prediction.

Mazza, lets talk facts here.
Juventus have lost ONCE in Serie A all season long.
ONE TIME. 24 wins 1 loss 6 draws.
Thats less defeats in their league than ANY other team in Europe. Less than Barcelona, Munich, Celtic, Lyon, PSV, Chelsea…
Are you telling me that Serie A is weak compared to the other leagues of Europe? You can’t seriously believe that one. Every league has a few elite teams… Juventus has one loss and is top of one of the best leagues in there world.
On the other hand, we are in 6th place, fighting for our CL lives for next year in our league, where we are 15 wins 10 defeats (10!!!!) and 5 draws.
We’ve lost to Bolton , Boro, Wigan, Everton, West Ham, West Brom…
and you are going to comment on the competition in Serie A???
Here’s the deal… I think we have a fair shot of taking down Juventus, especially at home, but please don’t tell me that they aren’t that good. Facts are facts. They are an excellent team with ONE loss, and we’ve had 10 in our league.
Player by player, we don’t match up at all. They have better players all over the pitch, ESPECIALLY in midfield where Gilberto & Cesc are a joke compared to Vieira and Emerson. Henry is better than ANYONE… but there strikers are nothing to sneeze at either… are we going to play Senderos against Ibrahmovic, thats a scary thought.
Can’t wait for the match. Hope we take them down and the dream of CL glory continues. Hell, GEORGE MASON UNIVERSITY just beat Uconn, so obviously Cinderella can dance… there’s always a chance… but telling me Juventus isn’t that great, Serie is not that good, and Vieira is lousy… please… that makes no sense.
