Couple of final thoughts…
Early in the match one of the commentators noted that “Arsenal’s entire business model is built around Champions League football.” Really? I haven’t heard Arsenal say that. Arsenal’s management doesn’t strike me as the type to make that sort of mistake.
It also presupposes that without Champs League football next year Ashburton Grove will be an empty bowl. Nonsense. If there is one season where Arsenal could play no European football and be ok, it will be this first season when thousands upon thousands will simply want to see the new stadium, regardless of who the opponents are. Consider this a pre-emptive strike against posters who will now start invoking the name of Leeds United. Arsenal will not go bankrupt if they don’t make next seasons Champs League.
How Wenger keeps from going home and kicking his dog, I don’t know. With zero margin for error the team keeps coming up just a bit short. It must be frustrating. Few decisions are right or wrong when they are made, the truth comes after. I don’t question his tactical decisions, I just wonder why the team he selected against Spurs couldn’t really raise their game until Henry and Cesc came on.
Wenger’s biggest test next season will be figuring out how to get production from Henry, RvP, Adebayor and Reyes. The key will be getting each player to buy into what their role will be. Somebody is going to have to play out of position or be a super-sub.
I don’t claim to be an expert at football, but those claiming Adebayor is a waste aren’t seeing what I’m seeing. He’s got skill and pace and has added assists and goals to Arsenal’s tally in the couple of months he’s been here. I’m not saying he should be, but if he was given a starting role next season - and the rest of the squad is consistent - Adebayor is going to contribute 12 goals and ten assists, easily.
My ideal midfield for next season: Hleb, Cesc, Gilberto, Reyes; supported by Diaby, Flamini, Walcott and Ljungberg.

I am sure Arsenal can survive one season without CL football. But the question is - if Henry leaves, will we make it to the CL the year after? Based on current evidence, obviously NOT.
I think Ade is doing fine. He is contributing in many ways - goals, assists and hard work. RvP has loads of talent but needs to work harder and improve his attitude. Reyes has talent and works hard, but things just don’t seem to work out for him. What makes it worse is that fact that RvP and Reyes have been around for quite some time. Wenger will have quite a job trying to get the best out of RvP and Reyes.
I agree with your midfield for next season, but have strong doubts about Ljunberg succeeding in a 4-4-2 formation in the bigger stadium. Another CM might be needed - Diaby is still raw and Flamini’s performances in CM have been inconvincing. Cesc might suffer from sophomore blues and Gilberto might get injured. We must cover ourselves for such cases.

When Man Utd got knocked out of the CL in December look what it did to their season in the league - they had nothing to concentrate on and they went on an unbelieveable run that almost had everyone believing they may just pip Chelsea therefore I believe that one season without CL is not a disaster by any stretch of the imagination….
Arsenal for one are a very well run club but businessmen who know what they are doing and this is a scenario they have planned for definitely…
Yes if Henry goes it is difficult but in this case you may see AW make the exception and go out there and buy a star striker such as Torres…but I don’t see Henry leaving…Emirates is huge - every one out there will want to play in this state off the art spaceship!!
Walcott will definitely feature alot more next year in league and carling cup and yes I agree with your midfield of Hleb, Cesc, Gilberto/Diaby, Reyes…he will have to strengthen his midfield a little more I believe as Ljungberg is prone to injury and Pires seems to be on his way….

…oh and Adebayor - my opinion is that he is a very good player and one that will help us in the CL by giving us the aerial option if and when needed…
Between 10-13 goals is realistic enough for him although scoring 8-10 goals and getting in heavily on the assists is also good for me…
Bigger season next for RvP and JAR and I believe they will come good due to the very fact the the dimensions of the pitch will be drastically different to Highbury…

Just to back up what you’re saying Rick about CL dependent finances, I’m pretty sure I read Edelman say in January that it was budgeted that we could survive 4 seasons without CL before the belt would have to be tightened.

All suppositions have been accounted for in the financing of the stadium, with a nice chunk left over for buying players. The longer we’re out of the CL, the longer we continue to pay, apparently.
My only concern in this regard involves attracting big names. Will they come if there’s no CL? Its not like Wenger makes a habit of picking the cream of the curren crop, but if Titi stays, he’s going to want one or two to play with. If he goes and there’s no CL…hmmm.
Ade makes things happen out there. He and Titi up front is a great match. Once he getshis finishing together, he’ll definitely being doing double-doubles.

If Henry leaves Arsenal will survive.
FACT.
They will have the same core of players and can cope.
Currently everything feeds through him and if he was to leave it would be a big blow but during pre season AW would work on it.
The 4 5 1 we are playing seems to have stuck and I personally feel it does not suit Henry so if he were to leave it would not be too mad.
Hleb and Eboue and Reyes and Cole add a lot of width and threat to the team.
Having a guy like Adebayor in the middle could do the trick or Yes Torres could be the man.
I can also see Diaby playing as the third midfielder instead of Freddie in the league to add a bit of steel.

Next season we need to be playing our CL formation in the EPL.
a 4 5 1 should make us harder to breakdown and add something extra to the team.
If henry stays he can be the main striker, if he leaves I am guessing Adebayor would be the main man. He will attract crosses, a new form of threat.
The five man middle would be something like
Reyes, Fabregas, Gilberto, Diaby and Hleb. A young and dynamic group of players. Not too weak for the likes of Bolton or Blackburn but quick enough to be a threat for the likes of Chelsea and Man U.
I would like to see the last three prem games played in a 4 5 1, this would give the players a better understanding for the big one.

I agree no CL football would not mean the end of AFC as we know it. The Gunners would surely be favourites in the UEFA Cup and the reduced big fixture load may lend itself to improved domestic standing in the EPL and FA Cup.
The wild card is Henry. Will he be patient enough to sit out the CL for a year and pass on the chance to play with Barca, who I might add, would likely be the reigning CL Champions if we do miss out on CL football next season?

I’d have to think our business model includes the scenario of BOTH CL football, which would make things a lot easier financially… and without.
The club will not die. The team will go on. But it will be a lot more difficult. We will not make the big payoff that CL football brings. It will be harder to attract talent.
If Henry goes, it will be more difficult to convince a big name to come in. Torres?
Come to think of it, we don’t buy star players, so forget about Torres. He’s already proven. We don’t go in for those.
Without Henry, the league matches are more difficult… and the liklihood of getting Top 4 next year is more difficult. Are there actually folks out there who think we’d be better next year without the best Striker on earth?
Yes, club will go on. No, we won’t get relegated.
But without CL football next year… and without TH14, things are much more difficult for us on many levels.
If you think its going to be easy to fill that big stadium on a cold rainy Winter’s night for a UEFA Cup tie against FC Fiddlestiks, your crazy. The cost is prohibitive for tickets already… there WILL be empty seats in the stadium for Carling Cup games, probably FA Cup games against lower division teams, and UEFA Cup, if thats where we end up.
60,000 seat stadiums don’t just automatically get filled because they are “new”… maybe for the first half of the season, but the novelty will wear off… especially if you are in the nose-bleed seats.

Not that the AFC would ever do this, but I wonder what would happen if a club boycotted the competition? In particular, what would be the fallout be if it was a G14 club like Arsenal?

There would be huge fallout. Anyway, it’s not in Arsenal’s best interests to avoid the competition - with a big stadium like Ashburton Grove they would still make a lot of money on match day, and you would think Arsenal could get to the latter stages of the competition where the prize money is probably worth playing for.

hey danny, the moneys accrued and the format of the Uefa cup have changed since then (for the better)…..
i don’t have links…..but now on average clubs get a quarter or a fifth of what you get in the CL….
in the CL, its 350,000 for a win (in the earlier stages) while in the uefa its around 80,000……and this does not include the gate takings……….
but then again this is still small change compared to CL ………
but definitely we won’t go under for one year without CL………i HOPE it doesn’t come to this though!

Hey, what about Joseph and his coat of many colours. He told the Pharaoh to fill his silos in the years of abundance, so that when a famine came the people could eat. Arsenal has never been this far in the CL and using the model of previous years, the club must just be racking the gold in. Notwithstanding the debt of the new stadium, there should be even more coin coming in from seat sales next year. So if they put the profits from this year in the CL, as well as potential revenue from the new stadium, I can’t imagine how the club couldn’t weather a CL famine of a year, two or three. If not, there is something wrong with the current management and from everything I’ve seen they seem to know what their doing.
If anything they seem to be spend thrifts as seen in Wengers reluctance to just go out and buy like Chel$ki. Now Chel$ki debt has reached astronomical porportions but I wouldn’t be surprised if Arsenal actually shows a profit, even in lieu of the new stadium which is a capital assets and can be leveraged as credit to the bank.
What the hell I do I know they’re not opening the books to me.

I say play the reserves and players looking to get match fit. I’d rather win the League and/or the FA Cup than the UEFA cup, and we don’t need injuries and travel weariness working against us in pursuit of knocking Chelsea off their high horse. Or worse, getting into the CL if we don’t win it this season.

If Arsenal make the final then I think this year will be one of the most financially rewarding in the club’s history - and probably will be so even if we get knocked out tomorrow.
Arsenal’s wage bill must be pretty low compared to the other big clubs in world football, even more so since Vieira & Edu left. The team is full of kids, I can’t imagine Reyes, Flamini, Eboue, Senderos, Van Persie, Adebayor, Clichy, Diaby, Fabregas are on big money at all - we don’t have many big earners yet we must be raking it in through the stadium and Champions League this year.
