The Who at Highbury Farewell Highbury
May 05

Thanks to Doug Goodwin, Arsenal America are proud to unveil our new crest, as pictured above.

The crest was created in anticipation of the upcoming 5-a-side tournament taking place at Highbury later this month.

The Arsenal America team is having shirts printed up featuring our new crest, but, considering we can get a better price the more shirts we order, thought we’d get all interested parties involved.

We’re looking to get the price to be about $16 a shirt, and because this order is essentially for the 5-a-side team, we’re getting two different sets of shirts, one red, and one blue. All those playing in the game will need to have one of each, which gives us an order of at least 20. We’re hoping to get that number up to 36, or even 48.

The printer has said that we can get any number(s) we want printed on the back of each shirt, but that any other slogans and or names would require additional charges, so we’ve decided against having anything other than the crest on the front, and the numbers on the back. Unfortunately, the Gooner who did the shirts for the Chicago gathering, Miriti Murungi, is very busy getting his own clothing line up and running, so we’ve had to look elsewhere for this particular set of shirts.

We’re going to handle orders in the following way:

Send an email to mikek AT arsenalamerica DOT com

In the subject line, put “5-a-side shirt”

In the body, we’ll need your name, address, and phone number, along with the color, size and # you want on your shirt. If you want more than one shirt (ie; one in each color) please be sure to indicate that in the email.

Once I receive your email, I will send you a confirmation, along with instructions for sending payments to the Arsenal America PayPal account.

The deadline for orders will be 8PM ET on Wednesday, the 10th of May, and the deadline for depositing the payments into the PayPal account will be 12 PM ET Friday, the 12th of May.

Please, if you have any questions, let me know via comments here, or emails.

Thanks,
Mike

Very nice. Whoever created the logo did an excellent job. Just one question? Is the crest on the front small or large?

  3. gerard Says:

    Love the shirt!

Can’t buy one though. My fellow Canadians would probably get pissed at me wearing a shirt that implied that America was an Arsenal, even if we all know it’s true.

Take off eh! No Maple Leaves, there so beautiful and make for nice organic forms in design, eh. The leaves could be descending in red, below the blue and white stars, eh.

You knew I would have to say something as I am a proud Canadian who spends a lot of time living in America.
It looks so USA American and not very North American.

Mike don’t take me too serious okay :)~

On being a Canadian living next to America.
It is like being a mouse in bed with an elephant, you have to be careful when the elephant moves.

    Mike,
You will be glad to know that I have already started trying to get into shape for the tournament. Last night when I went to Sainsburys I bought the small cans of Stella instead of the big ones. Should be good for about 4 quality minutes a game.
When will we be getting more info on times etc.
    Can’t wait.

It’s great design, but I don’t understand you put America bigger than Arsenal? You can consider same size or ……?

Please this is only comment, nothing with racism.

  6. basilius Says:

Nice crest etc. Where is the maple leaf, for we northeners and proud members of Arsenal America. Please give the “mouse” some recognition.

  7. dkilpatrick Says:

    Small, over the heart.

  8. dkilpatrick Says:

The maple leaf isn’t there because ArsenalCanada have their own side in the Supporters Trophy 2005-2006 Tournament.

  9. gerard Says:

What’s that got to do with it. They have theirs and then ours “The Official US and Canadian Arsenals Supporters Club” and we have our squad.
So our squad could also have a maple leaves on the crest.
Maple leaves are not the exclusivity of Canada as Stars and Stripes are not that of the USA, Cuba for example has them.
So our site has both emblems emblazoned on it’s logo. No problem!

Some people have brought up a good issue about the new crest. As a person who studied graphic design including the development of brand identiy. I understand what the crest is missing. A crest just like a corporatae logo is a form of brand identiy.

The brand is Aresnal America and it should best define what it is in the most accurate way. You are tying the meaning of colors, shapes and symbolism to the essense of whatever it is representing and to the group. So what is Arsenal America? American? or North American? I think the organization needs to redefine or re-evaulate itself. Or at least keeping certain information consistent at different levels. A consistent brand identity scheme strenghens the overall apperance of whatever it is representing.

The crest and organization name contains information but also may lacks certain information. There are several conflicts the Canadian members have already mentioned.

    1) It lacks any symoblism that Arsenal America also represents Canadian supporters. I agree with the addition of maple leaves.

    a) I don’t understand the meaning the 6 stars, if someone can explain that.
    b) Maybe an alternating pattern can work: star, maple leaf, star, maple leaf etc
    c) Maybe put a maple leaf over canon’s wheel
    d) Maybe replace the alternating red and white stripes with the Canadian flag

    2) There is a conflict in the name of the organization. The name Arsenal America is misleading because the term “America” is mostly used to represent the United States. However the organization claims to be the officail “US and Candian Supporters Group.” In order to be fair and just, Arsenal North America would be more accurate representing the continent as a whole. Well, in my opinion North America is really the US and CAN as being the most dominating nations (making up 2/3 of the continent).

If canadian supporters are unrecognized and have a foul taste over the the organization maintaining the current name and new crest, perhaps another other option for Canadian representation is to succeed from Arsenal America and align with Arsenal Canada (http://www.arsenalcanada.com/).

Here is an excerpt from their webiste:

“In late 2004 it dawned on us, Canada doesn’t have an Arsenal Supporters club of its own! And thus the venture to create Arsenal Canada began. “

“The call was answered and as of May 2005, Arsenal Canada was officially founded”

“Our goal is to have the club available to supporters across the nation by setting up community branches, operating under the Arsenal Canada name”

I personally think the best way to promote both American and Canadian supporters is to have consistent representation in name, colors and symoblism used. Can we modify the crest and the name? If not, then I think we should be strictly an American (U.S.) supporters group since the name and crest already represents that. Think about it. You hang a Arsenal America banner up at Emirates and what will our UK counterparts think? “I fancy those mates from the states (not the provinces)”

“It’s great design, but I don’t understand you put America bigger than Arsenal? You can consider same size or ……? “

p.s. The designer is trying to control emphasis. He is fpcusing on the “America” by making it bigger because he is emphasizing on where this supporters group is from. I personally wound’t like Arsenal America to be the same size because you gonna mess with the spatial arrangement of the text and stars and the weird curve on top. He’s already managed this spatial arrangment effectively.

  12. stag133 Says:

They started Arsenal Canada for this specific reason. Some folks decided to stay in Arsenal America, although they are Canadian… some folks decided to migrate north to Arsenal Canada.
The choice is yours. We can’t represent Arsenal Canada… but you can be part of Arsenal America.
That’d be my understanding of it.

  13. flaherty Says:

it’s an atractive logo, settle down. i feel like you’ve overthought the entire situation from concept through completion. this is why i’ve never been a fan of advertising agencies.

  14. flaherty Says:

am i missing something??? sent my email for the shirts, but no confirmation.

  15. Bergkamper_4_Life Says:

Although I’m well aware that I don’t post much on this site, in all fairness this is only because I am of the belief that I communicate with many of you on Big Soccer.

I would be lying if I said I wasn’t offended by the new logo (especially since it seems to have been finalized prior to this discussion taking place). In fact, I would be just as offended with the Canadian flag section of the banner being removed or replaced with another American flag.

BTW, what was wrong with the old logo (same crest, but with the Candian symbols)? It is a much better representation of our supporters group at the present time than this logo.

  16. Gator_Gunner Says:

    Same here.

Still waiting for a confirmation so I can pay.

    MikeK, you out there?
