Champions League Final Thierry Henry to stay with Arsenal - Signs New Four Year Deal
May 18

There is a saying (either German or Dutch, can’t remember) that goes: The ball is round.

It means that you never know what is going to happen, sometimes it goes your way, sometimes it doesn’t. Last night, for 70+ minutes I really thought it was going to be for Arsenal. They caught a couple of breaks (Eboue’s dive, Eto’o off the post) and they took a couple in the shorts (Lehmann’s red, goals that, sturck a little to the right or left would have bounced away, not in).

But that’s football and in the end Barcelona came out on top. They are a worthy champion and you really can’t look back at this as ‘the one that got away.’ I thought everybody played hard, and well. I’ve been harsh on Sol Campbell and he did the only thing he could - play well. Gilberto was terrific as was the always solid Toure. Ljungberg ran his legs off and Ash and Hleb played with passion.

Our captain just didn’t have that extra bit of magic. On another night he converts one or two of his chances. I hope we have the chance to see him try again in an Arsenal shirt.

Ultimately this was an entertaining, magical, historic, frustrating, infuriating season. I thank everyone who participated in any way with Arsenal America this season. I hope you enjoyed being part of this special community and I hope you’ll stick around. There is still much to discuss in the coming days and I’m sure we’ll talk World Cup a little this summer. For those who need a little break, I understand, and we’ll see you in August.

Up the Arse!

The only shame of the final itself is - with all the fuss of pregame show, the build up and hype to the game, the game itself was killed after 18 minutes.

No complain of the ref decision though, he made the right call. No complain on Lehmann neither, he did what he had to do. And our boys gave everything they had. It’s just not meant to be.

The shame is - we would never be able to find out whether the best team won. 10 Vs 11 there was no contest.

I watched the FA Cup final, and admired Steven Gerrard tremendously. As he did a year ago in CL final, he really ROSE TO OCCASSION. When the team was struggling, when the team needed an inspiration most, he showed up and took matter into his own hand. We used to have a player like that, our own captain fantastic Tony Adams. Sadly, we no longer had any player like that since the retirement of Tony.

Still feel non-plussed about the game. Might be because I was resigned to defeat after eighteen minutes or I am looking at football differently. Three years ago I would have been ranting and raving about every incident in the game to my family and friends for about 4 hours. I might be finally getting football in perspective. Those years of being knocked out by Chelsea and Valencia and Munich have almost stripped away my post-match petulance and anger. Not sure what I prefer. I almost feel like Colin Firth did in the last scene in fever pitch, shoulders of the team or whatever.

  4. stevecameron Says:

I completely disagree on only one thing in your summary of the final — Thierry Henry played his ass off, despite running everywhere in Paris to help out the 10-man defense and getting mugged and kicked continually by Marquez and Puyol. I’m amazed that neither of those guys — or Van Bommel, for that matter — ever got a card. And then Thierry gets one for a perfectly clean tackle, winning the ball from Van Bommel.

Leaving aside his comments about the ref — and why WAS a guy from Norway handling the final, anyway? — Henry made a couple of very significant comments that have gotten lost in all the screaming about Hauge and Jens, etc.

First, that if either Marquez or Puyol had gotten a fairly early yellow as they deserved, he would have had a lot more room to make space for himself while the game was very much up in the air — and he could still breathe.

Second, that he thought Alex Hleb gave him a “wonderful” pass to set up that chance that might have made it 2-0, but that he just didn’t have the energy to put his true magic to the finish, and for that he was just sick.

Please, please don’t imagine for a second that TH wasn’t magnificent Wednesday night, just because he had three shots saved — the first of which was pure luck as Valdez never saw the ball whack his ankle. Thierry did everything a human being possibly could do in terms of effort and commitment — especially considering how badly he outplayed the supposed best in the world, Ronaldinho.

TH said to everyone on the plane ride home: “We have to pick ourselves up and come back stronger next year.”

If he was hinting that he’s about to sign that extension, I’ll be ecstatic. If you’d asked me before the game if I’d rather win it and lose Henry or vice-versa, I would take the loss and keep our captain.

UEFA no doubt will suspend him for a million games to start next year’s CL qualifiers, but for once I agree with Jose Mourinho that Hauge deserved every last insult.

He ruined a wonderful night, but Arsenal were proud and gritty and defiant even in defeat. Especially Henry.

  5. nipuna Says:

I think Henry did a fantastic job as captain. But the problem is that there were no other leaders on the pitch. When it was 1-1, we completely lost our composure. You would have expected the likes of Campbell and Gilberto to lead the side, but sadly that did not happen. Henry did his best, but from the front, it’s usually not enough. We need someone at the back. Hopefully one of the youngsters will rise to task next season.

  6. amaranto Says:

Great comment, Steve. I hadn’t seen the Henry quotet from the plane, but it certainly does give us hope.

I can’t imagine the pressure of playing a man down against Barca in a CL Final, but I felt that Arsenal dealt with it admirably and I’m hesitant to place any blame, even on Almunia who seems to be taking some undeserved heat. He came in under impossible conditions, played well and got a little unlucky.

Even Mourinho criticized the ref on behalf of Arsenal? There’s a hint you may have reffed a bad game :)

I’m looking forward to watching the game again in a couple days to take a quieter, more objective look at it.

  7. DannyT Says:

I was as proud as anyone of the team last night and thought we played fantastically well. But one thing I’m just not is a stinking hypocrite.

I have read so much bullsh*t from fans and press about the ref and the diving etc. You’re turning football into a joke with your insufferable excuses and blind allegiance.

The fact is, Lehmann was rightly sent off, Eboue’s outrageous dive got us our goal and Barcelona players did not dive more or less than any Arsenal player I saw.

The ref gave Barca more decisions than Arsenal and had a bad game, but the defeat has nothing to do with the referee. We had the chances to go 2-0 up and fluffed them - end of. The biggest decision the ref got wrong in the whole match was giving us a free kick for the blatant dive that led to our goal.

That’s not being AGAINST Arsenal, it’s seeing the facts as they are.

As long as Henry stays this team can go from strength to strength and be there next year. We might not have won the final but we got there and played very well - we did not bottle it - this will give immeasurable confidence to those young players who have leaned so much this year.

  8. Andez Says:

As i always believe u need a bit of luck to win the Big Ear Cup. We have had our share of luck on the course to the final, only that the luck was not with us in the final itself.

Was Barca’s first goal offside, that’s without a doubt. But our first goal probably was a result of a diving from Eboue as well, so that even out.

Few have pointed out a fact - despite Ronaldinho appeared to have a quiet game, he’s the one who has won the game for Barcelona.

The fact we lost was not because we conceded the first goal. By then our players were dead tire, it’s only a matter of time before we concede anyway.

We lost because after we conceded a goal we had no ability to bounce back. And the reason of that was because we were playing by 10 men for the large part of the game.

So the decisive moment was Jens’ sent off. On that occassion, both Lehmann and the ref did the things they were supposed to do. So we can’t blame anyone of them.

It was Ronaldino’s perfect through ball which sent Eto’O through that killed us.

  9. Mazza Says:

And their first goal was off-side. Technically it should slide but it never does so Etoo should have been given off-side. It was that- not the refereeing decisions- that really pissed me off. Barca couldn’t create a chance against us in the second half.

  10. Mazza Says:

At last Andez, someone else actually can see that the first goal was offside. Some Arsenal fans here have all of a sudden forget the offside rule.

  11. faresk82 Says:

I think Arsenal were very brave … we did terrific and showed many people that we can get close to winning the CL. We were 12 minutes away from winning it (a tear just game out of my eye).

One Positive thing in this year: We made lots of money . And our kids got more expereince.

A question: Did you guys see Henry shouting toward the technical area (AW) asking for soemthing. Was he asking for another striker to hump in like RVP or Reyes.

To all of you Arsenal fans: I am happy that the WC is around the corner, otherwise I will be crying the loss for 3-4 months.

    Chearing for the Netharlands.. RVP

  12. Andez Says:

danny, perhaps eboue did dive, but he dived or not did not affect the game’s outcome, so why keep talking it about?

of cos nobody likes to see players cheating, but u can’t just single out Eboue’s incident without adding Barca’s players into equation as well. Did u see how a Barca player play acting at the end of the game when he kicked Reyes on the face, yet pretended it was Reyes who fouled him (depsite Reyes never even tackled him)?

And by no mean Eboue’s incident was the biggest mistake the ref made. What about Barca’s first goal? It was CLEARLY an offside. What about the sending off? yes, he made the right call. But a sensible ref would have to wait and play the advantage. Barca scored, and Jens get a Yellow. Game on. U’ll still get the “dream final” from two attacking-mind team to deliever a good final to the fans.

The fact that he ref was so eager to make the call and flash his red card just once again show how much the referee today want to take central stage. The day after the final, did ppl talk about the game? No. Most ppl been talking about the REFEREE DECISION. He’s the STAR of Champions League final of 2006. Not Barcelona, not Arsenal.

Even without Jens sent off, there is no guarantee we could beat Barcelona neither. But if they beat us 11 Vs 11, ppl would be talking about how great a team they are this year, and how wonderful football they play. But now ppl are talking about the referee’s decision.

  13. doogie05 Says:

58 of the happiest minutes of my life yesterday, regardless. End of story.

  14. stag133 Says:

    Its part of football Andez.
Sometimes players get sent off, and it changes the game.
    He had to go.
It WAS a contest at 10v11
We LED with 15 minutes left.
We had our chances to win… we didn’t take them.

I have no problem with the match, the sending off, etc…
you are right… not meant to be on this night.

  15. stag133 Says:

    Danny,

it evened out… Eto’s goal was offside, clearly.
We DID bottle it in the last 15…
Almunia could have made both saves…
and after Barca scored… we sagged even MORE than we had… which was the most of the 2nd half.

I agree Lehmann SHOULD have got sent.
No debate there… but all in all, the bad decisions went both ways.

  16. stag133 Says:

True on the calls and ref Andez…
but I still see us up 1-0…
    with the chance to win…

Can’t possibly ask for anything more than that.
I’d take the 1-0 lead and down to 10 men at the half EVERY SINGLE TIME.

  17. gerard Says:

Hey, you got Dutch blood cursing through your veins?
Not that I know what Dutch blood really means, if only that I was born there and lived in A’dam for many years.

After the game I rested this years jersey on a hanger over last years jersey and the years before that. I then hung my orange jersey on the knob of my bedroom door where the gunner jersey hung from Sept. til yesterday. It’s all I could do from soiling my gooner kit with a pool of salted tears.

    Oranje Boven.

  18. faresk82 Says:

Its not RVP ..but since 88 and I am in love with the Dutch soccer. You cant pass by watching soccer and not loving their style of game. Since I was 6 and the 11 oranges running in the fld makes me excited.

But the Reds of with JVC on them has stolen my hurt also after 5 years maybe. And it was the coolest thing to see an orange wearing a red JVC banging goals in London.

I cant beleive it … no more of this any more.

I think yesterday was one of the most emotional days in soccer for me. Bergy is gone … its been years of loving soccer . Yes, Marco Van Bastin made like soccer, but Bergy made love soccer, Arsenal made me adore soccer.

  19. gerard Says:

I won?t say the refs call on Lehmann wasn?t technically a correct call but I still think it was the wrong call. I?d of preferred the ethical call so early in the game and that was a yellow card and let the goal stand. This would have given a more balanced and exciting game of which Arsenal may have still lost.

For me it was like getting a parking ticket while you ran into a store to get change for the meter. You run back and the parking officer is standing there not even 59 sec.s later writing out the summons. You ask him for compassion and suggest he must have seen you run into that store for the change, to which he answers, ?I started writing the ticket and I can?t tear it up now.? Did I deserve the ticket, technically yes, ethically no!

I was so impressed we lasted, with a lead, as long as we did but the writing was on the wall and all I could do was hope. Man did I hope! I watched Almunia give a couple of great saves and then he started looking like himself, bobbling the ball, poor placement, a horrible decision goal keeper error, terrible bad luck for him. I don?t blame him and I think that under the circumstances he did an excellent job until the last goal.

Heartbroken for yesterdays game yes, disappointed in this years performance no. As a lover of the beautiful game, I can honestly say that the Arsenal gave me everything I could possibly want as a fan. Tension down to the last EPL game and history breaking form in the CL. Some great new talent. An excellent year by any standard.

In short, beaten but not defeated.

keeping the faith! go you reds.

  20. gerard Says:

right on - i concur with you and feel much the same

the last time i felt so bad was Holland loosing to Germany in the final.

  21. Andez Says:

If u saw the replay, the first goal we conceded, Almunia has already commited himself to cover for the far post, so Eto’o took his time and sent the ball into near post.

On the face of it it seemed like a horrible ‘keeper mistake, but i feel Alumnia just lack of a bit of clamness like Jens does. A ‘keeper like that, no matter how many brilliant saves he has made, he’ll never be able to give his team confidence with him at the back.

  22. gerard Says:

i thought he looked a lot better at covering the ball up than he did last year until it started pissing rain

  23. Tim@California Says:

I’m disappointed but very proud of the way the team played. I think that Lehmann’s red card was justified…it was a correct call, IMO. But I think the team showed enormous character in the way they played for the remaining 72 minutes 10 v 11. They just ran out of gas at the end.

Thanks to all that make Arsenal America possible.
    Tim

  24. DannyT Says:

I’m not sure if Eto’o was offside, looked more level to me. If it was Arsenal’s goal you would say it was onside or level.

I don’t think we bottled it at all, I think the players just got really tired playing 10 against 11 and eventually they didn’t have the legs to track Barcelona’s strikers.

Playing Larsson as the extra man killed us, because it stretched us even more defensively. If anyone lost the plot it was Eboue, I’m not just saying that because of his play acting, but the kid really showed his inexperience in the last 10 minutes despite having a good game up till then.

  25. DannyT Says:

Well first I didn’t think Eto’o it was offside, I thought he was level, and secondly I really don’t care what other teams get up to, I don’t like to see my team winning goals by cheating. If players are diving it’s up to the ref to deal with it, that’s his job - it doesn’t justify your team to cheat as well because the game just becomes a mockery.

Maybe it’s a personal thing, but for me there is no value in winning anything through cheating - nothing at all. I mean you win the European Cup and it will always be there in the back of your head that you only did it because a player cheated, it’s not the same for me as winning it the right way.

Had Arsenal won 1-0 I would have had very mixed feelings about it. Probably happy, but soured. It’s down to your own personal conscience at the end of the day.

  26. stag133 Says:

Yes… fatigue played a big part.
    They had like 75% possession.
    Valiant effort with 10 men.

  27. ScottyUS Says:

I agree everyone played their hearts out. That’s to be expected since none of them have ever won the big ear cup.

But for the sending off, I equally call to task Lehmann and Cole. Ashley’s lack of match time saw him out of sync and play Eto’o onside. And Lehmann had the choice to not grab Eto’o’s ankle. This is the final, and up to that point, we looked likely to score. There was plenty of time to turn the game around had we gone a goal down. Barca did it with less.

You can’t beat Barca with a young club without 11 men. Gambling like that when the rules are clear was a mistake. An honest one, but one nonetheless in my book.

  28. faresk82 Says:

Alumnia is the sub goal keeper, he does have good reflection or handeling, but his cover to the 2 goal were horrible.. We cant balme him for the goal, I would blame the other 9 that allowed the ball to get too close.

As goal keeper myself, I can tell that his cover was poor and any smart “good striker” would put it in.

The second goal : the striker had a very small angel, but he noticed Almunia had is legs wide open. Not to say that I would have saved it, but Lehman would have covered those well.

  29. SCJonathan Says:

If TH14 scores in the 70 mintue, we probably would not have only wonthe game, but I think it would have put him in the drivers seat to finally win world player of the year, which he deserves( assuming that he also has a decent WC). If France does well in the WC, he might still have an outside chance.

I do not really want to see Ronaldihno win it three years iin a row, but he truly is a great player.

  30. tonyhatch Says:

i got back from paris tonight and am still feeling down but am proud of how arsenal held on for 50 odd mins with ten men watching the game live in stade de france means i missed out on replays and am told that it was a dive by eboue for the free kick which lead to campbells goal that barcelona 1st goal was offside and lehmann should have got a yellow card and their goal should have stood but heard some good news about henry who said WE will be back in next years final ( so does that mean hes staying ). keep up the good work arsenalamerica heres too season 06/07 COME ON ARSENAL

  31. DannyT Says:

ACCORDING TO BBC SPORT UK, HENRY STAYS!!!!!!!

“I hope to stay as long as I can keep running. I couldn’t leave the fans. They’re like family,” he told The Sun.

“I love Barcelona, but on Wednesday Arsenal showed they had heart. I hope to finalise details today.”

  32. Rick Says:

I didn’t say Henry played poorly, just that he didn’t have that extra bit of magic. I thought he played very hard throughout.

  33. seagunner Says:

Interestingly, a few of the reports I’ve seen have said things along the lines of “Barca beat Arsenal in the final, but Henry beat Ronaldinho in the battle of players”. I agree for the most part - I think that Henry had, aside from a couple of misses, an excellent game and one that demonstrated his growing skills as a leader. Ronaldinho - aside from making the pass to Eto’o that resulted in Lehmann being sent off - didn’t manage much of anything.

Maybe folks will remember that come world player of the year voting time…

  34. seagunner Says:

As with all contract rumours, I won’t believe it until I see it on the arsenal.com website, but it is looking quite good… the news of Henry extending his contract another 4 years would certainly help cheer my post-CL gloom.

  35. Denver Says:

I just read the same. Actually, with Henry, the Sun does have the inside scoop, so I do believe it’s true.

On to the Grove with our heads held high and one of the most exciting squads ever!

  36. kamiazim Says:

this story is from The Sun, usually suspect but i’ve heard that Henry has an exclusive contract with Sun Sport so im believing this, 99.9%….they’ve got to put it on Arsenal.com though, hopefully tommorow afternoon in North America i can enjoy my first positive mood since wednesday afternoon.

  37. Fred Says:

@JC: somehow i doubt henry will win that world footballer of the year (till he wins the world cup or CL) and when i say win, i mean him being the main man and then deciding it…….
why? because apart from arsenal fans, most others still think henry is a big-game bottler…..its all about perception. at least this gives henry motivation for next season. premiership and CL ambitions will be high.

I must confess, I am a bit embarassed by what Wenger and Henry are saying.

We fans should be moaning and whining ( thats what we do! :-) ) but wenger and henry should not be talking like that. (his “woman” comment is quite embarassing actually).

Wenger already has the reputation as the biggest whiner in the country…..and henry shouldnt join him on that. Even Jol didnt whine this much after their lasagne debacle.

Anyway, that is that, now HENRY has signed…..GREAT now we can build solidly for the next season.

I think for sure we should not use this 4-5-1 with Henry as the sole striker again. He is not the sole striker type. (you need somebody big, strong, like say adriano or drogba in there).

we should revert to our 4-4-2. afterall, juve use this and are still strong defensively. But this means we should get a very good striker this summer. One that is sure to get at least 15 goals a season. I hope we can get Adriano……but Wenger never goes for proven….oh well !

  38. Andez Says:

Fred, I think it’s difficult for anyone to stay clam after such an important and emotional game. So often, as fans, we would let out a lot of opinion right after a game, most of them probably were out of frustration. Then u think of the manager and players, they are more involved them us. The interviews they did were RIGHT AFTER THE MATCH, so i think it’s natural for them to let out their own frustration. If you do the same interview on them a week later, they probably would think of the right words to say. But right after a game it’s difficult.

Whether what they said was right or wrong I don’t think it matter that much. What it matters is you can see that they care about the game, care about the victory. I’d be more disappointed if our players or manager would just stay clam and analysis all the fact and reality right after a match, like what just happened in the match was someone else’s business. Then u’d wonder where is their drive, do they really care?

Funny thing is one of the coolest men in the game, Sven Ericksson, he’s often accused by the media and fans for being too cool, too emotionless. They doubt that whether he cares… So u see, you can’t please everyone!

  39. gunner4life Says:

Henry is staying. Read on http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=368351&cc=5901
So Wenger, the ball is now in your court. Pls take out the cheque book and start spending on some serious experienced talent in the summer. Find us another Eboue. Or a Toure. We need a bigger squad of very strong players if we want to contend in England and Europe.

  40. stag133 Says:

    No way Mr.Scotty.

Lehmann did what he had to, and was CORRECT in doing so. We f’n LED 1-0 with 15 min left.

WHat they hell did Ash do wrong?

No blame on either. No way.

  41. stag133 Says:

    HENRY TO STAY AT ARSENAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    :)
    Absolutely Fantastic.

    Made my day.

  42. ScottyUS Says:

And yet we lost having run out of gas in front of a keeper who hadn’t played since we lost to Bolton in the FA cup. Fifteen minutes is a long, long time. They were patient and took adantage. Had we managed to find the gas and methods to equalize, who do you think was more likely to score in ET?

The most important player in the tournament took himself out of the game. I can imagine his horror at the possibility of giving up a goal, so early, after having gone so long without doing it. Being Mad Jens, he panicked, and ended up in the tunnel dragging our chances with him. As it stood, both of Eto’o’s shots after he was off were savable. Not easily savable, but savable.

With a half hour or less left, I could see it. But in the 18th minute, it practically sealed the game for them. Yes, we went 1 up, but if you think Eboue’s dive that turned into a Sol header wasn’t lucky, you’re far more forgiving than I.

And Ash was getting the offside trap wrong a few too many times for safety. In this case, he didn’t stay with the defense, and played Eto’o onside. I’m not knocking his effort, or anyone’s for that matter, but he was the reason it was a 1 on 1 with the keeper.

Blame is harsh when they play hard, and anything can happen with our club. But Lehmann, in a moment of panick as he’s done before, hurt the team with his decision. Just my opinion.

  43. SachinG Says:

GLAD TO BE FINALLY READING the right kind of news!!!!

Sometimes the best player signing in the world is simply a resigning :) Henry is pure class and defines Arsenal. He is worth much more than that showman at Barca. Love Henry!!!! The best player in the world!!!!
