I know this sounds crazy but I believe it’s true. Arsene Wenger is interested in signing the striker Goran Pandev. I know that the media in England didn’t release the news, but here in Macedonia our newspaper came up with a statement that Pandev will sign for Arsenal.
The news was confirmed by the player himself and he said:”The offer from Asenal is the most atractive one for both the clubs(he is co owned by Lazio and Udinese) and me. Representatives from Arsenal and my agent talked about possible transfer 3-4 times in the last couple of months.”
And it is believed that the offer is 12 mil. euros(6 mil. for Lazio and 6 for Udinese).
Now for those one who don’t know who is Goran Pandev and I believe the most of you don’t I will tell you.
As a 16 year old he signed for Inter Milan and played a couple of years with their youth teams. At that time his coach said that Pandev is better player than Martis, who was already with their first team. Then he went to Spezia on loan for one season. The next year he was loaned at the Seria A club Ancona where he showed his qualities. When he returned from the loan spell he had no future at Inter because Adriano, Recoba, Cruz and Martins were ahead of him. Then Inter offered 50% of the rights of Pandev to Lazio in exchange for Dejan Stankovic. The other 50% got Udinese when they sent Chilean David Pizzaro to Inter.
Last season was good for him, he scored one of the best goals I’ve ever seen in my life when he dribbled past the entire Juventus defense and scored a great goal. This season he was one of the best Lazio players and scored 11 goals, althogh he didn’t start in every game. And the performances he produced this season didn’t gone unnoticed. Udinese want him on permanent basis, Fiorentina are interested, as well are Werder Bremen. But it looks like Arsenal offer is concrete and Pandev said that he will know the future before the World Cup. He is a striker but can play on the left wing as well and he is good with his both feet. He is our best player since Darko Pancev(won Golden Boot of Europe in the early 90’s).
So I don’t know where he will fit in this Arsenal team, but I hope that the transfer will be done, because he is my counrty man and he deserve to play in one of the bigger teams in Europe. I hope it will be at Arsenal.

Have to say I have never heard of him.
But Wenger uncovers these kids and gems that most folks don’t have a sneeze about.

Don’t know anything about him or if he’s coming to Arsenal, but after watching his video (see below) he seems a decent player. He also looks like a real fox in the box scoring most of his goals in crowded situations in the penalty area.

well, i’ve heard of him and have seen him play, but he’s not a striker, he’s more like an attacking midfielder. the problem is that we already have adebayor, henry, reyes, hleb, ljungberg, van persie, rosicky as attacking minded players. a more ’stable’ defensive midfielder would be a better idea and a goalkeeper. the hungarian Kir?ly would be a good one, plays for crystal palace at the moment. but of course, pandev would add more options to this team. could be the gem wenger needs…

I think we’ll hear dittos all around. Never heard of him, but those first and last goals are pretty sweet. Great dribbling skills and pace. Looks like the type of guy we like. We just don’t need another pass first forward.

Hey, don’t tell me that Pandev is not a striker. We came from the same country and you can be sure that he is a striker. But as I said he can play on the left wing as well. Maybe you have seen him play on the left when Lazio were playing with three strikers, Di Canio, Rocchi and Pandev, and because Pandev is more versatile than the other two, he plays as a winger.

Yes, he has a brother. His name is Sashko Pandev, but I think that he is going to play for Dinamo Zagreb(Croatia).

Yo US boys what happened against Morocco in Nashville!? I never imagined the great American soccer team would lose to an Arab-African team that did not even qualify for the World Cup. FIFA should swap and put Morocco in USA’s place in the World Cup and kick USA out because this is ridiculous. I have seen Pandev play and yeah he is quite good. He was valued quite highly in Serie A a year ago…
Sheed you bring up an interesting point about the english media not picking up on this rumour/story. Back in January, I had a friend telling me the Serbian websites and papers were covered with Arsenal signing their top striker (Zigic? I can’t remember). I looked at some of those sites and even though it was in Serbian, I could make out the connections with Arsenal. This story was red hot and then it died down after the transfer deadline passed with his club wanting to wait until after the world cup before making a decision. I just could not believe that a story like that would not have made it on any English website….
fact or fiction? who knows. But one thing is sure that all these gems that Wenger finds may not be in the limelight but somewhere someone knows about them. I had a friend who gave me advance notice when Senderos signed for Arsenal a few years ago. Apparently when this guy lived in Switzerland, he used to know Senderos’s brother who played basketball (professional I think) and he told my friend that he was happy that Arsenal were giving his brother a chance. He told me but I dismissed that news. And when Senderos made his senior debut, well I was surprized. Next time when I hear something like that, I might not be so negative…

Wenger, no doubt, picks out gems from the unkown and makes them into great players. But it is difficult to see him signing a striker unless someone leaves. We need to address the problems areas of central midfield and central defence first.

He looks like the kind of player that will piss Henry off. I rate Van Persie more than Adebayor and Walcott (for the moment). Wenger should give him a decent chance this season - he has the best left foot in he game at the moment. Lets my cove for our defense…

I think the Henry+Ade combination will work well in the league. Ade can play in the CL too next season. RvP will remain a super-sub unless he improves his work rate and team ethic. And we have Theo Walcott. I can’t see a striker being signed, but Arsene has surprised us before.

I don’t rate Van Persie at all. There’s no doubting his skills or talent but he simply isn’t delivering. The majority of his goals are coming on as a sub, or against weaker teams - play anyone decent and he’s practically anonymous.
I don’t think you can win a title with Van Persie as a first choice striker, he simply isn’t a team player. This is certainly a make or break season for him now.

We do need a striker, a proper foil for Henry. It could be Adebayor, we’ll have to wait and see. Walcott can play wide right aswell so he’s versatile, I think we should but someone else, if it means Van Persie doesn’t even make the bench then he’ll soon realise what it means to give 100% and cut out the flicks and tricks and lack of work ethic.

As I said he can play on the left wing too. So maybe Arsene will sign him as a replacment for Pires who is off to Spain. Central midfield is now stronger with Rosicky in there and if Campbell stay then the defence will be solid too.

I am arsenal through and through but as my mother is born in rome i have always followed lazio’s fortunes…pandev is a real gem of a player, he did not play as much as he should have this season with rocchi bagging many goals for lazio and the lazio supporters INSISTING that di canio play the first 60 minutes min. of each match. Goran is also very young and can play out wide (left)…I am not to excited to be honest as i was about rosicky who seems to be born to play in an arsenal side but WENGER knows…
