I listened to that on my shortwave radio while up a mountain in the Dominican Republic. When I screamed Yeeesssss! parrots flew out of the trees all around me.

Mickey at that moment was the COOLEST man in the world!! I doubt any other player in that situation, however skillful he is, would be able to finish it. It’s not a difficult shot, but Mickey had 18 years’ hope, frustration lying on his shoulder, and a season’s sheer hard work at stake, he surely made it easier than it really was.
And apart from Thomas’ goal, what a brilliant touch from Alan Smith. His touch was the moment which MADE THE DIFFERENCE, virtually sending Mickey through.
I had the video. My hair still stand up everytime when i re-watching it…

one thought: had Brian Moore still alive, and had him the one who broadcasted the CL final, when Thierry Henry broke through from Hleb’s pass, could he have screamed the same line “It’s up for grabs now!!” At least it was the line on my mind at that moment… Well, as i said, Mickey was the coolest man in the world, whom i called Mickey the-Mr-Clutch Thomas.

Thanks for posting this. This was the day I became an Arsenal fan all those years ago. Funny thing is I have not reflected much on this day in the last few years. But this is the day when I felt there was something special about this team and I started to support Arsenal! So in a way, it is my 17th year anniversary of being an Arsenal fan as well

The greatest Arsenal and Leaue moment in history and yet I barely remember it, being around seven years old at the time. I remember I was watching it though. It’s strange, I can’t recall that yet I remember being at highbury against Newcastle that season when the whole crowd were murmering about the Hillsborough disaster.
Thank god for Fever Pitch.

Yes Danny, I don’t think I’d ever get more excited by a football match than Anfield 89 anymore.
Those were Holloywood stuffs, utlmate giant killing heroic act with a last minute game.. well, league-winner. Forget about “GOAL”, Harchester United.. u’ll never be able to get a more dramatic game than Anfield 89.

There was so many factors that drive me mental. I mean Arsenal were not winning anything before then except some cups, the league was miles away.
And Anfield was a TOTAL fortress, nobody even scored a goal there let alone won. Arsenal destroyed Liverpool’s fear factor that night and they’ve never recovered.
I think the next season they went on to lose quite a few home games, the invincibility was gone. It was the start of the NEW Arsenal, Graham had a lot to do with laying the foundations for Wenger’s success.

absolutely my favorite moment as an arsenal supporter.
the final 5 minutes of the 79 FA cup final ran the spectrum of emotions.
but the circumstances surrounding that final game of 89 make it the greatest end to a season ever.
i loved seeing the lads run over to the small section where our supporters were screaming, while passing the muted and stone-faced expressions on the liverpool fans.
if you didn’t see it live, you best find a copy and watch.
it was magic.

Danny, not only was Anfield a fortress, but Merseyside in general, right? Everton were also a force back then (sounds weird now…) and if i remember correctly the title hopped across the mersey a couple of times in the mid to late 80’s.
and you are spot on about how that started the fall from which liverpool are only now recovering.
those liverpool teams of the 80’s were so good, and so dominant. their passing game was the standard in europe and it is a pity they played during the european ban. they surely would have won a few more european cups.
as a neutral fan, they were great to watch, in much the same way we are now when we’re on song.
but let me not wax too long about those bloody scousers…!

yes Everton were in the mix for quite a few years.
Liverpool were unbelievable though at one point, I think there was a game when they destroyed Nottm Forest 5-0, it was probably the best I have ever seen a football team play. The one-touch passing was phenomenal - I wish I had a tape of that match so I could watch it ancd compare it to Arsenal.
I don’t think Arsenal are play that way at the moment, I think the first half of Wenger’s reign was better football. Now you see a few nice little short passages but the team cannot sustain it for long - or maybe I have got too used to it.

i remember a game in which liverpool thrashed chelsea 5-2, i believe.
one of the best goals i ever saw was scored by steve mcmahon that day.
classic counter-attack, a number of pinpoint, one-touch passes that landed to feet had started from liverpool’s defensive third.
i think the move started with mcmahon…
he fed barry venison and took off running…
a couple passes later he was through on goal with yards of space still to cover.
dave beasant came out of his net but was stranded as mcmahon chipped/lobbed him from the corner of the box.
a most audacious goal, but typical of the way liverpool played back then.
you remember that FA cup final against everton that went to extra time? the year escapes me…
stuart mccall had at least one cracker of a volley.
even post ian rush (before he returned) they were magnificent. john aldridge fit right in…
those teams were so damned good.
and i agree that early in wenger’s reign we were much more efficient with our passing game, not prone to the over-elaboration that we sometimes see now.
but i do also think that we have become a bit spoiled over the years…..
