…said the Daily Mirror, then edited by an Arsenal season ticket holder, in a front-page headline the day after the 1998 World Cup when Vieira of Arsenal slid the ball through to Petit of Arsenal for France’s third goal in their 3?0 win over Brazil in the final.
This is taken from an article in the June 2006 issue of the National Geographic, currently on the newsstands, authored by none other than lifelong gooner Nick Hornby. It is also available online at:

In the article Nick charts the ups and downs of England?s World Cup entries from 1966 to date.

Thanks for that link, interesting article.
Sadly, England wasn’t the only nation with rogue fans and yobos, as my mind recollects some nasty Dutch fans as well. I’m glad those days are behind us for the time being.
It’s all a mute point anyway as the Netherlands are playing Brazil in the finals.
OFF TOPIC
I’m somewhat surprised that there’s been nothing posted here about Arsenal’s involvement in Beverengate? Seems like a news worthy topic!
Here’s a link if you want to know more:

It’s not a moot point gerard. You watch, something will kick off somewhere in this World Cup, and if it doesn’t, it will be down to the work of the police and not the self-restraint of the fans.
Too early to comment too much on Beverengate, other than to say I’d watch out - FIFA and UEFA don’t want to be seen as being lax on corruption. The Serie A scandal has really tarnished alot of images, and this Arsenal scandal is not going to help. Someone will be made an example of.
