Just for fun, or because I had nothing better to do, I went through every World Cup squad that had qualified for the finals in an attempt to uncover a future superstar. My only stipulation was that his name had to be ‘unknown’ to the vast majority of peolple outside his native land…As I dont know the vast majority of the people in the World, I became the vast majority! After a week or so I had narrowed it down to 2 players, Theo Walcott of England and Arsenal and another youngster from Croatia who plays for Dynamo Zagreb. O.K, cats out of the bag on Theo so Luka Modric wins! Now Luka is described as an attacking midfielder with incredible ball skills, able to play pin point passes at will. He has also gained a reputation as an incredibly tough tackler, especially for someone so young. This kid is only 20 but has represented his country at all levels and has only made his full international debut this past March. He started his career at Zrinjski Mostar where he was voted player of the season by the fans in his first year, before moving on to Dynamo Zagreb. In recent scouting reports he was compared to Wayne Rooney and Lionel Messi, these reports according to his agent have led some major European powerhouses to send their own scouts to watch him, including Bayern Munic who are rumoured to be putting together a bid. So there’s my tip then, one to watch, look out Brasil!

Damn, NBG. You must be hella-bored. What do you want us to say?
June 3rd, 2006 at 11:26 am
Chelsea, Liverpool, Spurs, Arsenal, or Man Utd? Probably Racing Santander.
June 3rd, 2006 at 11:50 am
Bastia claim that Arsenal have signed Alex Song for 4m Euros making him our second signing of the summer. Anybody thrilled?
June 3rd, 2006 at 12:10 pm
Niko Kranjcar from Croatia is better player than Modric. Niko is a class playmaker and I don’t know why he is still playing in his homeland.
June 3rd, 2006 at 3:15 pm
i think we should get F. Malouda, he’ll be way better in that position for the present which is what we are looking for, plus he’s french and seems to get along well with henry, i know wenger said that rosicky is there to replace pires, but he also likes to play in the middle, just think malouda would do great for our attack.
June 3rd, 2006 at 4:36 pm
Stag probably is thrilled
He’s been calling for signings… so, there you go. Be careful what you wish for!
June 3rd, 2006 at 4:42 pm
Modric is going to Troyes, Venezia or Hamburg- St. Pauli… or Mazza’s Racing Santander guess.
But seriously for the sake of the argument, what about Clint Dempsey of the US? He’s fairly young (only 22 I think). He’s the type of player that’s skill level will only peak so far playing in MLS & to reach his full potential he’ll have to go to Europe & if given a legitimate chance I think he could be almost as good as Claudio Reyna but with more of a goalscoring touch as he can play in more advanced positions than Reyna does.

Just read that the F.A are seeking help from FIFA in order to investigate the loan payment.
This basically confirms the fact that a big comotion is being made out of nothing and F.A, desperate to make an example out of Arsenal, are trying to get FIFA to identify some imaginary scandal to stich us up. Pathetic.
June 3rd, 2006 at 7:51 pm
song is a shocking signing
June 3rd, 2006 at 11:55 pm
Wenger must have seen something in Song which most forumers here missed. Its certainly a strange signing on the surface.
June 4th, 2006 at 12:03 am
Hey lads, one of our Arsenal Canada members has posted his many, many pictures of the tournament at Highbury day which unfortunately didn’t run according to plan. I thought some of you might be interested in seeing them. Some show some Arsenal America members, as AA and AC played a friendly game after the disappointing Highbury cancellation. Anyway, hope you enjoy!
(PS - AC won ;))

Yes, but if it’s going to be the only signing in central midfield, I would be very concerned.
June 4th, 2006 at 12:41 am
No Curt…
lets stand pat, while Chelsea, United and Liverpool improve.
That would be brilliant.
Yes, I’d like us to sign a few players. Perhaps you’d like us to do F**k all.
Carry on then … should we aim for 5th or 6th next year?
June 4th, 2006 at 12:43 am
You are giving me shite about wanting to sign players and you mention “Clint Dempsey”?
Surely you jest.
Taylor Twellman would be a better choice!
Reyna could not play for Arsenal. He’s not good enough… let alone Dempsey.
June 4th, 2006 at 1:02 am
God , Song has always looked way out of his depth in both competitions. He must be Wenger’s illegitimate son to keep getting on the bench and now get signed…for 4 million????? nice one
June 4th, 2006 at 6:48 am
my god this is the worst signing we have ever made…..
if we had got this guy for free or for less than a million i wouldn’t mind………but for 4 million !!!
June 4th, 2006 at 7:07 am
Bastia website about Song. It’s in French which I don’t understand.
http://www.sc-bastia.com/index.aspx?section=38&news=655
But the figures there are 300.000 ? plus 150.000 ?. This comes as such a relief. Why didn’t I check this before.
June 4th, 2006 at 7:09 am
On second read, does that mention another player? Can anyone translate?
June 4th, 2006 at 8:06 am
Mazza, of the Beverangate, in short, it’s like: BBC suggested FIFA has been investigating the matter… yet FIFA said no, English FA has to invesitigate first… and English FA reponsed, ok, but… well…WHAT are we actually invesitigating for?!
June 4th, 2006 at 8:16 am
Exactly.
June 4th, 2006 at 9:17 am
oh, this is the best news i have heard today…………300 grand is about right for him.
we should pay that 150 grand extra only if we win the CL this next season!
June 4th, 2006 at 11:11 am
We don’t need anyone else…looks like Reyes has found his scoring touch. He scored today for Spain.
June 4th, 2006 at 12:27 pm
What do you think of Dowie leaving Selhurst, and Jordan’s reaction? Bad times in the bad part of south London
June 4th, 2006 at 12:28 pm
Righto, Stag.
2 things:
1. You’re a Revolution homer by naming Twellman
2. I didn’t mean Arsenal should sign Dempsey. I meant that he was a young player who may become a star eventaully.
And I wasn’t jesting. If you cna honestly tell me, outside of Boston team haze, that Twellman, a forward, who can more or less only play centrally is better than Dempsey who can play both in midfield or upfront & out wide or in the center & can dribble along with having a nose for goal & is oyunger & has more room improvement is better than Twellman, than I may quit thinking your clamor for signing players isn’t all that merited.
And Dempsey is on the roster at the World Cup, which was what the post was talking about, Twellman is not but even within MLS, not just those that mnade the US national team, I’d name a lot of people ahead of Twellman as potential signings for European clubs.
June 4th, 2006 at 12:30 pm
Unless he’s considerng moving Lauren back to midfield? I don’t know. As much as I trust Wenger, even this signing is sort of strange. Song must be awesome in practice!
June 4th, 2006 at 12:33 pm
Ridiculous. And how do Chelsea’s dealings or Juve’s behavior for that matter continue to get off scot free?
And if FIFA acts anything like FIA used to, they’ll make up a law on the spot to punish someone they don’t like.
June 4th, 2006 at 12:35 pm
Juve has thus far gotten away scot free with their behaviour, but now mate, it looks like it may be Goodnight Vienna for the Old Lady.
And thank god for that
June 4th, 2006 at 1:04 pm
Nipuna, my very rough translation comes out with this:
“Arsenal have taken the option concerning/involving Alex Song. The young midfielder has signed a 4 yr. contract for one of the best European clubs.”
The other part is about Bernt Haas, the Swiss player. That’s who the 300.000 + 150.000 amounts for, not Song.
Again, very rough translation:
“Also (resigned?) to a 1-yr. contract is Bernt Haas who transfers form/to FC COlogne who was relegated to Germany’s 2nd division, a club (that the Swiss defenseman signed played for 3 yrs.) [That can't be right Haas was with WBA 2 yrs. ago!
] The amount of the transfer is 300.000 Euros with 150.000 more based on number of appearances.”
June 4th, 2006 at 1:05 pm
That’s not what the Bastia article says. The 300k plus 150k was about Bernt Haas.
June 4th, 2006 at 1:12 pm
shibby, i think Reyes is a good player, he really is. and i won’t suprise he goes on to light up the World Cup with his skills.
The only problem he got is he’s been so SLOW adapting to Arsenal’s play, and the physical natural of the Premiership. He’s fortune (or rather unfortune) to have a manager like Wenger, for whom when he believes in a player, he would back him up 100%.
Next season in my opinion is Reyes’ last chance. If he still plays like the way he was with Arsenal last season, I wouldn’t mind we cash in on him and use the cash bringing in someone else. ‘Cos by then if he still can’t make an impact like he should he probably would never do. It’s best for the club and Reyes’ interest for both parties to move on.
June 4th, 2006 at 1:18 pm
Didn’t see the article’s headline it’s:
Alex Song to Arsenal, Bernt Haas to Cologne
June 4th, 2006 at 1:20 pm
I would agree with that assessment, Andez.
Now or never, Reyes!

June 4th, 2006 at 1:37 pm
Yes, Stag. Why set our goals that high? Let’s get something we really know we can reach like 10th.
F**k all in my book is just as good as do F**k everything.
I don’t want to spend millions of pounds just to do it. I don’t want to even spend 20 million if he’s worth 15 b/c it’s still overpaying. I don’t want to spend 10 million on 7 million just b/c we have the money & can spend the 10 million. If that’s f**ck all to you, fine, I’m not trying to please you, Stag as neither is Wenger.
In fact, I hope you don’t like me, as my faith in the crappy divers team brought us to the brink of European glory & for some reason some of you Nicks still can not see past the beginning of last season. We were never really that bad of a team, breaks just didn’t go our way & the end of season form proves to me that we have a side that is able to challenge for the EPL next year. Maybe not to you, but I don’t give a rat’s as* anymore about your pessismistic outlook anymore other than to keep you going to hear your ridiculous things like “should we aim for 5th or 6th next year?” Is it a guarantee we will win the title next year? Of course not, but even Chelsea signing Shevchenko & Ballack is not a guarantee of winning the title, the Petes like me understand that Chelsea still have to go out & play 38 games like the rest of us.
Also, Stag, it’s June 4th. Should we rush our payments & overpay & buy players now? B/c again I point to Liverpool, Man U, heck even Juve, Milan, Barcelona & Even Galactico Real who have also done “f**k all” so far in the transfer market. Oh wait Milan did sign Favalli, so you’re right Stag… let’s run out & buy a 34 yr. old defender, ASAP! before Milan & Real buy them all!
June 4th, 2006 at 2:57 pm
i think its the same thing with RvP
June 4th, 2006 at 3:12 pm
Fred, i think RvP is a bit different. To be fair with him, since his injury, and the addition of Adebayor, RvP didn’t get his share of first team action (as a starter). I’ve heard Henry perferred to play with Adebayor, that didn’t help (RvP’s clause) as well.
As a striker, one really needs a run of games to get into his rhytm. While RvP was coming in as a subs here and there, or occassionally got to start, it’s difficult for him to make an impact.
Personally, I feel this kid got what it takes to make it. Physically he’s strong enough to play in the Premiership. And technical wise, he’s very sound. In terms of striking technic, he’s probably the best of the current Arsenal team, even better than Henry.
Of course henry is a much better and proven finisher, with his experience and clamness in front of goal. Yet if u noticed, henry likes to “place” his shot. RvP though, he really “strike” it with the back of his foot, like the way Alan Shearer did. it takes a great technic to do that.
And he’s hungary and aggressive in front of goal. Along with a tremendous balance which allows him to do his trick.
In fact, I once thought, had Henry chosen to leave, RvP probably would be the one to step up becoming our attacking main man.
Now the only problem is - whether he can play alongside Henry? Will he able to learn to be a better team player than just taking the shot whenver opportunity arise. Not that it’s wrong doing so, just that I afraid Titi may not like this kind of “shoot-on-sight” type of attacker as his attacking partner, having played with unselfish players like Bergkamp and Pires for so long.
June 4th, 2006 at 4:01 pm
I know you loving it coming from a Millwall fan. Hey I’m wishing Iain Dowie all the best but I guess he is going to the wrong club if you know what I mean. No hard feeling towards Charlton but to leave SW London to SE London is a bad move.
As for Jordan, he is a big joke. The guy is a cu*t. He always throws his toys out of the pram whenever things don’t go his way. Personally I’m suprised he hasn’t named himself as the new Manager. I know he wants Souness as the next manager so that explain to you the nature of the Cu*t.
But one thing for sure Palace never have a dull moment in their history.
June 4th, 2006 at 4:16 pm
Hey we got relegated, give me a little something to smile about anyway
Thing is I liked Dowie, seemed a good guy with a good head on his shoulders. Why he was working with the Orange-o-tan Jordan is beyond me.
June 4th, 2006 at 4:39 pm
Dowie is a nice bloke and I really like him. A very calm person and deal with things and issues well.
Somehow I feel bad seeing a London club getting relegated. Since Wise left the club they have never been the same. I went there to watch the Arsenal ladies against Leeds for the Woman FA Cup and you can feel the Lion Den is long gone but that is true with football in general at the moment.
Is not a sports anymore.
June 4th, 2006 at 4:47 pm
You should see what’s going on down at Millwall right now. Brown, Chapman, P de S, all trying to ruin the club. In fact there is a rumour they are trying to drive the club into extinction because it is worth more for the land (the so-called Millwall Village scheme) than it ever was as a footballing outfit.
You’re right, it certainly isn’t anymore mate.
Still, it’s ours to reclaim…
June 4th, 2006 at 5:19 pm
Curt, be nice.
June 4th, 2006 at 5:27 pm
I hoped so but can’t see football coming back as a sports for the people.
June 4th, 2006 at 5:30 pm
Hmm then what to do about it? If it isn’t a sport for the people, and the biggest clubs become unaffordable for all but they very wealthy, what should we do?
June 4th, 2006 at 5:58 pm
Sigh… you’re right… damn! I’ve been cautioned! I think I miss the 1st WC match debate b/c of yellow card post acculumations!
June 4th, 2006 at 6:02 pm
As far as Rosciky being a replacement for Pires, Bobby became more a central player in our 5-man midfield. Even in the Barcelona game Freddie played wide left and Bobby was central. In the away match against Villareal, when Pires came on it was central (his vision and field awareness helped settle the game for us). I didn’t really consider him a winger anymore.
Rosicky’s a central player. I’m also a Dortmund fan and I’ve never seen him play wide left for them. The question is will he play in front of Fabregas? While Rosicky is a very fine player, I believe Frank Ribery is a bit more dynamic in that you could put him anywhere in the midfield and he could do a very fine job.
I also rate Johan Vogel as I believe he’s better than Gilberto. He’s sitting on the Milan bench behind Pirlo wasting away. If you haven’t seen much of him, watch him in the World Cup for Switzerland this summer.
I like Malouda and he’d be good competition for Reyes. I don’t know who I’d rate higher, but the Frenchman would stay on his feet better than Jose and may be a step quicker. I saw Clint Dempsey in the England game and I was at the Poland game a few months ago when he scored the game winner. He plays on the right for the US while he’s a sound player and a very hard worker he’s not better than Hleb. But, he’s so much like Freddie Ljunberg it’s scary. I don’t know if he could force his way into the team.
This is just my view on the names thrown around. I’m sorry NBG as I’ve not seen Luka Modric as of yet. I’ll be looking though.
June 4th, 2006 at 6:10 pm
I do want Reyes to be an impact player in Arsenal. So far he is not despite his potential. The EPL just may not be suited to his game. And the lack of empathy from English refs is a contributing factor. Next season will be tougher for him bcos EPL refs will be keeping an even keener eye against diving. Drogba is at #1 in that list; I think Reyes is also on that list though I think unfailrly. Hopefully he has a great WC with Spain - if anything else, it will increase his stock with teams like Real Madrid. So if he does not cut it next season, he shud still fetch a decent price.
June 4th, 2006 at 6:14 pm
Good spot on Vogel! I also follow Milan (became a fan around the same time I started like Arsenal!) since the Dutch trio of Van Basten (still one of my favorite players ever), Gullit & Rijkaard.
But you’re right about Vogel. I think he;s better than most people might give credit as is somebody like Dempsey (but I will admit I’m an American through & through, so I may biased on this one
). I just think Dempsey has a lot more upside to his potential that will only be reached if he plays in Europe one day. I like Dempsey’s style of play b/c he can play centrally or out wide & whe he’s out wide he likes to make those, as you adroitly pointed out, Ljungberg-esque runs into the box from out wide, plus from the times I’ve seen Dempsey play, he seems to have that Pires-like nose for the ball & sense of where to be as to be in “the right place at the right time.”
I doubt he’d ever sign for Arsenal but I meant he’d be a good signing for a European club in general. Hopefully he wouldn’t turn out like Reyna & John O’Brien who’s European careers are/were both plagued by injuries. Johnny O was starting for Ajax when he ran into all those injury problems. He (O’Brien/Johnny O) could’ve been so good, if he could’ve stayed healthy.
But I’ll never give up hope of one day seeing an American outfield player lining up as a regular in a club like Arsenal, Milan, Bayern, Barca, Real, etc.
June 4th, 2006 at 6:19 pm
With Rosicky providing the Bergkamp’ese passes for RvP to latch on next season, he can have a bumper season depending how many games he get. It is great to have 3 top striker in Henry, RvP and Adebayor. I hope Wenger rotates them smartly and also throw in Lupoli and Bendtler into the mix. It looks like van Basten intends to make RvP one of his primary strikers to partner van Horseface - this shud help RvP and prepare him for the next season.
June 4th, 2006 at 6:31 pm
If Ribery is indeed the new Zidane, then I hope Wenger signs him. But with the wealth of attacking midfielders in Cesc, Helb, Ljundberg and Rosicky, I doubt Wenger will do so - unless he offloads Ljunberg. Have not seen Vogel in action so will keep an eye on the Swiss games. I think Wenger signed Song as a standin for Gilberto now that Diaby is out for at least 6 months. He might be looking out for a Vieira return in the event Juve is relegated. That I can live with. :-))
June 4th, 2006 at 6:47 pm
we weren’t that bad of a team…
right… all those losses to lousy teams were just bad “breaks”…
If you believe that… you need help.
The table doesn’t lie.
We finished so far behind Chelsea its scary. They have improved. These are just facts… don’t let them get in your way.
I don’t care what you think either Curt, you don’t have to respond to my posts, I’m not making you.
You can buy players prior to the World Cup, like Rosicky… or you can wait. There are 2 trains of thought of course. But if a player has a good World Cup, do you think their price is going down?
No, it will skyrocket.
By the way, you aren’t spending the 10 Million or 7 Million… unless you are on the board, its NOT your money. If we made many million, and we don’t spend it on the team, it goes in someones pocket. I’m only interested in the team getting better and winning. I am not interested in Arsenal making the most money for its investors.
June 5th, 2006 at 7:00 am
Hey…
somebody put up that Arsenal America League site again… for the World Cup Prediction thing…!!!
June 5th, 2006 at 9:06 am
Are there ANY OTHER Free sites with World Cup Competitions for us to join?
(getting World Cup feva’ a bit!)…
Its nice to have a 2nd chance… if the ESPN one goes south fast!
Isn’t our “Fantasy League site” having some kind of World Cup thing?
June 5th, 2006 at 10:45 am
I agree with that assessment. It should be now or never for him as he hasn’t been all that we expected. I just see signs of his enormous potential all the time and I hope he realizes it with us. Especially with Pires leaving, I think Reyes can fill in quite nicely in that spot.
June 5th, 2006 at 4:08 pm
You will need a 2nd chance after I take home the glory on ESPN. Just a little trash talking to start off the tournament.
