Arsenal America is looking to field sides in MLS’s “Futbolito” tournaments around the country this summer. We are currently looking for seven players per city for the following locations:
July 1 Salt Lake City
July 8 Philadelphia
July 15 D.C.
July 29 New York
August 5 Chicago
August 19 New Jersey
September 2 Denver
September 9 Phoenix
September 16 Los Angeles
September 23 San Jose
MLS charges $125 per team ($120, plus $5 processing fee), which, divided among seven players, comes out to just under $18 a person, not including official Arsenal America shirts (of which each person will need two - one red, one blue). We are planning to enter teams into the less cut-throat Recreational division. One downside of the whole tournament - no co-ed teams.
Otherwise, this sounds like a great opportunity to get together, and to further raise awareness of Arsenal America as a rising force in the American soccer/football community.
To learn more about the Futbolito tournament, check out the MLS’s site:

June 14th, 2006 at 6:17 pm
Yes but no coed teams
June 14th, 2006 at 7:56 pm
Oh… yeah… didn’t see that… it was only there in BOLD!
June 14th, 2006 at 7:59 pm
Indoor 5 Vs 5 i believe it is.

By far the best day’s action! Spain, as i said, just because they were flops at the past doesn’t necessary mean they will remain this way this year.
Saudi and Tunisia produced one of the best games so far.
Mark this player - Germany left back Phillip Lahm. The best player so far in the tournament, in my opinion. An Ashley Cole type of attacking left back (only that Lahm is actually right footed). Not only scored a great goal in the opening match, he was invovled in most of Germany’s attacking build up the past two matches. Well, I soon bought him for 4.5 mil GBP in FIFAM06 management game, I’m going to play him at the right back. Will be interested to see how he does for my Arsenal side!

“Recreational division…. to further raise awareness of Arsenal America as a rising force in the American soccer / football community.”
This is why I marvel at sports metaphors and anecdotes. Arsenal America as a rising force? What are we going to do, type our way into enmity.
I’m a fifty year old crippled, pick me, pick me. That’s why I became an artist no one ever picked me for the sports teams.
I just love soccer because my dear old grandfather, my Opa, taught me the beauty of the sport.
I or rather we are already a force, why not just go and have fun.
June 15th, 2006 at 2:05 am
After the first round of games, Rosicky is clearly the star Arsenal player. Henry was the biggest disappointment. Toure and Senderos did well. Lehmann and RvP didn’t have much to do. Ljunberg, Cole and Eboue were below average.
June 15th, 2006 at 8:01 am
He’s signing for CHELSEA.
June 15th, 2006 at 9:01 am
Yeah stag, just read that Chelsea is interested in bringing Lahm to Stamford Bridge for 10 millions. Looks like the Speical One got a same taste as me!
If that happens, now suddenly Bayern Munich seems to become Chelsea’s new “freeder club”!
June 15th, 2006 at 9:12 am
Everyone will sell to Chelsea (for the right price) except ManU, Arsenal and Liverpool. When Sheva leaves Milan to join Chelsea, you know that anything can happen.
June 15th, 2006 at 10:58 am
I say we pay more than Chelsea to get Lahm he has been brilliant in both games this tournament. Honestly though how many players can Chelsea buy their reserves would finish 5th in the Premiership. What a fn joke.
June 15th, 2006 at 1:18 pm
Los Angeles and So Cal Gooners - If you are interested in getting a team together please contact me through the PM system or send me an email at david_przybylinski@hotmail.com. I’d like to get a list together to see if we can get enough for a team out here.

Freddie Ljungberg to Sweden’s rescue!
1-0 Sweden……. Paraguay is out.
June 15th, 2006 at 4:54 pm
Huh?
what the hell would we want him for?
We have Ashley Cole, Gael Clichy, and Matt Flamini… all at left back…
We don’t need Lahm or any other left back…
It would be a waste of money.
June 15th, 2006 at 5:07 pm
I agree - that’s too much money, but I don’t see how anyone can rely on Clichy. As good as he is, he hasn’t even made it through half a season without picking up major images.
June 15th, 2006 at 7:36 pm
Well, i live in salt lake city and as i can see we’re first, but i’d like to know about the rules of the tournament and who we are gonna play against, plus how much will the shirts be?, other than that i guess i can do the job, i’m 22 and skinny, i AM a smoker though so hopefully the competition won’t be that extreme.
On a different note, this World Cup is turning out to be fantastic from my point of view, with lots of late goals, hard work, good football, drama, and great competition, have u noticed how there are no small teams?.
I agree with the people that are talking about lahm, he does look like a good prospect from these two games, how old is he? and, who does he play for?, but i guess we won’t be needing a left back unless ashley betrays the club that supported him through injury last season.
I still have faith that Titi will come through in this WC, it’s true he didn’t have a good game last time, but i’d blame the coach for playing him alone up front, he did that during the CL but during the knockout stages he got two goals in seven games, i mean that ain’t bad, but he must be a little deplenished from being up front on his own, i think he’ll perform as soon as domenech changes his attacking tactics a bit, which he should do after drawing such an uninteresting game.
Anyway, here’s hoping for the WC to keep impressing me and entertaining the world and for all our players to keep performing the way they are, too bad for the americans this weekend Italy is going to bury your national team……
June 15th, 2006 at 8:06 pm
Feel so happy for Freddie! A player with great heart, he fully deserved his goal, probably the most important one in his career.
As for England… Let me put it this way - HAD Peter Crouch not being 6 foot 7, he would be lucky to get to play in the Conference. England’s WORST striker EVER. I watched Ecuador’s strikers’ finish in front of goal, then watched Crouch, it’s just amazing. He makes our former target man Alan Smith looks like Marco van Basten. Period.
Funny enough, the English press had been giving so much sticks to David Beckham. Yet had not because of Beckham’s two crucial crosses, England might not even be able to their points. Like many, I thought this was the best England side. Yet so far they have been a major let down.
June 15th, 2006 at 9:41 pm
When I was a professor several years ago there was a student who was taller than P. Crouch. The other students called him “brain on a stick” because he was so intelligent and was as skinny as a rake.
Around here I refer to P. Crouch as “stick without a brain”. I agree Andez the WORST striker I’ve ever seen. I get the feeling if you planted a pole in the six yard box, Beckham would be able to bend a few of it for goals as well. He really makes me laugh though because he seems to try so hard!
We Dutch have creeps like Van Nistelrooy, and we Arsenal supporters know that even though he’s been known to play dirty, he does at least know where the goal is.
I just sit on my hands in those England matches and wish they’d put on Walcott instead of wingers and sXXt (rhymes with tit). I have still to see him play and what a better place than the WC.
June 15th, 2006 at 11:08 pm
Yeah Gerard, I agree Crouch is a hardworking player, yet so do many other players. He’s just not international class, and it’s embrassing to see him wearing the same England shirt as some former greats like Keegan, Shearer, Lineker.
van Nisterlooy is never my favourite player, but there is no comparison between the pair in terms of talent.
June 15th, 2006 at 11:22 pm
We aren’t “relying” on Clichy to do anything… except be a back-up for Cole. He is good cover for Ash, and can definitely play in some games and not cost us much on the pitch in comparison.
He has had “injury” problems… but not sure about major images!!!!
Ash has had his share of injuries as well.
You can’t bank on anyone staying healthy. Thats why having Cole/Clichy & Eboue/Lauren is not a bad thing.
June 15th, 2006 at 11:27 pm
The deal is… England have 2 wins… and are in the next round.
They can rest players… and have no worries.
They HAVE to improve to advance, but if they can manage to play better, they can make a major push in the tournament.
Sometimes its better to be lucky than good.
Peter Crouch… never thought he was special at all. England just don’t have anyone else to put in there with their injuries… Liverpool can have Crouch… he’s average. Tall… but average.
June 16th, 2006 at 1:55 am
First impressions do last.
The second round of games hasn’t changed anything. Germany are good but not great. Ecuador proved they are no fluke. England are below par and Sweden are struggling.
Sweden are creating chances but they lack finishing. Ibrahmovic is not a goal scorer. They are relying too heavily on Larsson and Ljunberg. Arsenal fans know that relying on Ljunberg for goals this season hasn’t produced the desired result.
But I am so happy that he scored. I think with proper rest, he can get back to form. If Sweden get knocked out early, good for Arsenal. If they go far, I hope Wenger rests Ljunberg properly before starting him in the new season.
June 16th, 2006 at 2:19 am
I don’t plan on Cole being here more than 1 year if even that so we might as well start looking elsewhere before we get beat out by trash like Chelski for quality like Lahm.
June 16th, 2006 at 4:51 am
To be fair to Crouch, he’s not that bad. Strikers need service, just ask Michael Owen who has played 2 of the worst games of his career. Crouch fluffed his volley, but fat Frank missed about 10 chances, his only contribution and in my view should be dropped to allow Gerrard to be more attacking, but we don’t hear anyone saying that or blaming defenders for pumping the ball up front when a short pass will do.
June 16th, 2006 at 5:17 am
Agree about Gerrard/Lampard and Owen but not Crouch.
England’s long ball is made to suit Crouch, so why blame defenders if they resort to it? However, even after Rooney came on, the team was still playing in the same way, as though they didn’t know he was on the field.
When push comes to shove, Gerrard must be chosen over Lampard. He is a big game player and history has proved it. But I have a feeling that Sven will go with Lampard.
June 16th, 2006 at 7:31 am
like you say, there is no way Sven would risk dropping Lampard, least of all to bring in a holding player who tackles and harries and plays it short and goes under the name Hargreaves…!
It’s a legitimate tactic to pump the ball the big Crouchy, but I can’t believe Sven is telling his defender that it’s the pass of choice, so play it at every opportunity. Surely they must be thinking work the ball to to Beckham when he has space, Beckham to play early cross, Crouch to head ball. Variety. Instead the defenders make the midfield redundant.
June 16th, 2006 at 7:53 am
Trust Sven to mess up a good side.
June 16th, 2006 at 8:17 am
I wouldn’t say Crouch is the worst England striker ever, although he’s nowhere near the best. His contribution is adequate and he pretty much does what he’s there to do, nobody expects him to be a prolific striker. He’s certainly played better than those other planks Zigic and Ibrahimovic?
With England, it’s all about the system and tactics - because the team - like all England teams - has limited options and is not all that good technically.
Owen will never score with a 10-man defence in front of him, it’s just not his game - he should never have even been picked.
And England have no chance winning this tournament playing 4-4-2 with Lampard & Gerrard in the middle.
However, it will be interesting to see how they do from now on, because they will no longer be up against ultra-defensive teams like Paraguay and Trinidad, as they will all be gone by the quarter finals.
I still think England can do well in the tournament against more attacking teams, because their defence is pretty solid and they have good counter attacking players. But they really need to play 3-5-2 or 5-3-2 to have a realistic chance of winning it or they’ll get found out through the middle.
June 16th, 2006 at 8:26 am
352 indeed. Diffixult to know if it’s a phsycological thing with english players, but 352, in spite of it’s flaws, does tend to get the best out of England teams.

Best goal of the tournament so far scored by Argentina and Esteban Cambiasso. Looking like the best team so far as well.
June 16th, 2006 at 11:28 am
my god, serbia just got a thrashing…..and they had the best defense in europe in the last 2 years, so they were not really pushovers…
seems like the argies have a point to prove this time around.
June 16th, 2006 at 12:51 pm
A lot to write even at half time of Holland vs Ivory Coast.
We’ve seen the good and bad of RvP. He played well and scored a goal. But he was showboating soon after. This lad has got a decision to make. He can either play for the team (Holland and Arsenal) and become great. Else he can end up as nothing.
Robben has given Eboue a tough time. But Toure has been great helping him out a few times. Eboue could have got a penalty, but for going down too easily.
The defence is clearly Holland’s weak link. GvB is so soft. If Eboue can give him the run around, imagine what Messi will do.
Can’t wait for the second half.
June 16th, 2006 at 12:59 pm
RVP what a strike.
Ljungberg also yesterday what a great goal.
Also, for Peter Crouch haters, if you’ve been watching him through England’s warmups and int he first 2 games he is actually quite a good player. He is a striker and strikers are meant to score goals. Crouch has 6 goals in his last 4 games I think. You cannot argue with that kind of production. Everyone hates him because he is a tall lanky goofy bastard, but I like him and his form has been oustanding these last few weeks.
June 16th, 2006 at 1:54 pm
Despite a few tricks, RvP showed in the second half that he CAN be a team player. He defended a lot and produced one goal line save. Will he do the same for Arsenal?
The Dutch defence is too brittle for them to go far. Argentina could rip it apart.
Having seen two Ivory Coast games, Zokora is better suited for Arsenal than Yaya Toure. He defends a lot more and we need that. Yaya is good but we have Diaby.
June 16th, 2006 at 1:55 pm
3 of those goals came against Jamaica.
June 16th, 2006 at 2:01 pm
By the way, Toure was sensational. I think he is among the best in the world right now.
June 16th, 2006 at 2:56 pm
Pity we could not say the same about Ya Ya. He is too much like the modern Patrick Vieira in that he is good at most things but not strong enough at the same time. He is a luxury player, a nice guy to watch who will do some nice stuff no doubt, but he is not disciplined enough to hold the midfield. I didn’t see him today, to coin a phrase from Thierry Henry.
The composure side is also suspect. When he gets to the box at Old Trafford will a do an Eboue and Toure and try and physically run through the bone of a player?
Arsenal should be looking at the Maxi Rodriguez of this world, Javier Macherano as holding player would be a dream.
To be fair Alex Song looks disciplined, I’d prefer him to Ya Ya.
June 16th, 2006 at 2:57 pm
Diaby is OUT.
He is injured, and won’t be back for a while.
You never know how a player will react/return from a serious injury. Pires was still good, but never quite the same after his injury. You can’t rely on Diaby coming back, and he wasn’t that great even when he was playing. He is still young, but no guarantee he is the answer.
yaya
June 16th, 2006 at 4:02 pm
i agree big time RVP man of the match for me. but yeah dutch defence is way too weak. And i hate tht SOB van Bommel, i think he is one of the sneakiest and dirtiest players on the planet.
agree tht yaya is not vot we need, he is definitely closer to viera than zokora…but we’ve changed our style viera needs a gilberto a petit…vot we need is a petit or gilberto rite now. Zokora is disciplined, stronger than gilberto, though not as good in the air and way better on the ball.
June 16th, 2006 at 4:32 pm
felt really bad for Kolo Eboue and the rest of them (even drogba) they deserved a win. They have gr8 pace, desire and even technical ability just missing tht “something” or maybe they’re just missing some luck.
Toure- one of the best in the buissness
Eboue- a lot better than previous game attacking wise atleast
Boca- someone i tht was class in the last game…had a really bad game today.
VanP- MOTM for me, showed everything robben will never show. I think a good performace at the WC could just set him up for a good season. btw does anyone else think tht he shud be tried at Right Wing, he does have a lot of trickery.
Yaya- a good good player, skill on the ball. massive strength, gr8 pace and good eye for pass. Very much a young viera (though i dont think he has the tackling yet or the discipline). but gr8 at recieving the ball under pressure and keeping it (something we miss against sides tht press)
though i think the player we need is zokora, he is the defensive mid in their set up looked a class act. strength, decent passing (lot better than gilberto), composed and can hold of players well, though not too good in the air, oh yes pace as well (again something gilberto doesnt have)
oh yes and Robbens an ass, vot a waste of talent!
i say get zokora and unhappy gallas
and toure has become phenomenal
June 16th, 2006 at 4:59 pm
I think its an easy call to say IVORY COAST are the best team that won’t go to the 2nd round.
Tough tough group… and they actually played well in BOTH games they lost. Easily could have gotten a draw in either game.
They are a VERY good team. But thats life in the group of death!
I think many of their players made a good account of themselves… including ours… Kolo and Eboue. Yaya is gonna be a really good player.
Argentina and the Dutch were just a bit too good for Ivory Coast, but they have nothing to be ashamed of.
Angola had a good showing today as well.
0-0 v Mexico… well done Angola. Their keeper was fantastic. They have some unpolished gems as well.
That war torn country has something to be happy about tonite. Nice showing.
Tomorrow, another very interesting day of football. Gotta love the World Cup.
June 16th, 2006 at 5:25 pm
Must say it has been a great world cup. Probably the best international tournament since euro championship in 1988.
Ivory Coast are one of those teams that has to concede before they start playing. Bet they regret not going for it earlier in games.
June 16th, 2006 at 5:40 pm
Yea Angola’s keeper played well but he needs to learn how to punch the ball. One of those crosses could easily slip away from his hands on of these times.
June 16th, 2006 at 6:49 pm
Why are all the comments OT? Go to BigSoccer for that.
June 16th, 2006 at 7:01 pm
Dave…
We go off topic because there is no place on ARSENAL AMERICA to post about the days World Cup matches.
We’d like a DAILY Post called…
Today’s World Cup matches: June 16
Discuss:
But it hasn’t happened…
so…
instead…
we go on the latest posting, and discuss the matches of the day, rumors, and anything else that comes to mind.
SIMPLE.
If we wanted to go to BigSoccer, we would… but we prefer ArsenalAmerica.

June 16th, 2006 at 8:11 pm
DaveP, i guess it’s because we wanna go a place where everybody knows your name!
June 16th, 2006 at 8:21 pm
Say what you will but what Holland showed today is that it is as good at defense as it is in attack. Jeez, sounds like beloved team in the Champions League this year.
Holland did well when you consider the big team game Ivory Coast brought with them. To consider the Argentine / Serbia-Montenegro (SM) in the same context is purely myopic. SM didn’t even try after about the second - third goal. Kezman was his typical big game player = looser red card. Ivory Coast came to play and this might of been one of the most exciting matches so far. The two games can’t be compared, no more than Arsenals loss to Ajax or Chel$ki win to Andrelecht in the CL.
My advice to you lads is stop talking through your hats and blowing so much hot air. Why not mention England’s lousy form to date? Holland is in no need of strikers or defenders as today has proved.
As far as I’m concerned Holland played well, RVP got a sweet goal as did Ruud VanNistelrooij. We’re through even if we lose to Argentina. The good that would come from beating Arg. is that it will convince this Dutch team that they are world-class and can beat any team, which they can.
ORANJE BOVEN
June 16th, 2006 at 8:27 pm
I sat on the edge of my sofa most of that game because Ivory Coast just kept coming and coming, intercepting and coming again. They played a great game and our Arsenal players were stars of the game. Great game and Ivory Coast in group D or F and they might very well of made the round of 16.
June 16th, 2006 at 8:29 pm
Oh yes and a tip for that ESPN game - pick Ivory Coast to win their last game against Serbia Montenegro.
June 16th, 2006 at 8:39 pm
Yes Stag why isn’t a daily Post put up anyway? I mean really what’s it take? “World Cup Friday 16th”
That took me less than 2 seconds to type.
Hey ill ‘Presidente whats up with this - come on there’s still plenty left - DO IT ;{
June 19th, 2006 at 10:06 pm
did those things ever go out? i never received mine.
June 19th, 2006 at 10:08 pm
i’m 5 hours from chicago and would love to play if anyone else is up for it.
June 20th, 2006 at 10:08 pm
