Czech are down 0-1 at half time against Ghana.

Rosicky is struggling against the physical opponents. Not a good sign for us. He also missed a good chance failing to connect properly to a Poborsky cross.

  2. nipuna Says:

    Ghana have thrashed the Czech.

I don’t know why the Czech gave up their passing game and resorted to long balls without Koller. Lokvenc was worse than Crouch. He didn’t win any headers. When down to 10 men, most attacking players (including Rosicky) never got back to defend leaving huge gaps for Ghana to exploit; which they finally did. Cech showed why he is a world class goalkeeper by making numerous saves.

Rosicky had a poor poor game. He is proving to be a typical Arsenal player. All class against weak opposition. Struggling against physical and tough opponents. His lack of defending is cause for grave concern to us.

  3. andrew Says:

wow–what a miracle playing offense will do against the Czechs. Just devastating…should have been 4-0

  4. CarletonGooner Says:

While overall it was a very poor performance from the Czechs and Rosciky was certainly worse than the previous game he wasn’t that poor. He made several great runs and had some good distrobution and just wasn’t getting any help from his teammates. Certainly nothing special but not as bad as you or the absolutely atroicious commentators make it out to be in my opinion. Lokvenc was crap like you said, poor passing and just muted overall play from him all day.

  5. ScottyUS Says:

Do my nerves need this game against Italy? No they do not.

  6. Curtisimo Says:

The Portuguese ref in USA-Italy match was absolutely HORRIBLE. Maybe a little latent payback for USA-POR from ‘02?

Jesus f’n’ Christ he was horrible. The only call he got right was the straight red to De Rossi for the elbow on McBride. The Italians have no reason to complain anymore about refereeing decisions going against them b/c they got them all back in this game.

US obviously looked much better & they didn’t look out of place against the Italians but the next match against Ghana will be tough too since Ghana played the Czechs off the park today.

  7. gerard Says:

Firstly, thanks Stag133, we needed this: scrolling down looking OT in the other posts was becoming tedious. You?ve done us a service and thanks again.

What a great weekend for African footy!
Angola yesterday, Ghana today, a fantastic game by the Ivory Coast against Holland. All of these games were also such a pleasure to watch as each team brought their game with them, awesome. Ghana played so much better than the Czechs and deserved the win. Who would have thought that one of the tournament favourites would find defeat to Ghana, Love_G thought it and I?m only sorry I didn?t join ranks with him to pick them to win. Kudos? Love_G, looks good on you and your countrymen they where great. What a game!

USA vs. Italy, I don?t think I have ever seen so many cards handed out in a professional game. I hate it when the REF plays the game instead of the players and I think the REF went overboard calling too many harsh calls on both sides. It?s done now and again I awoke this morning thinking I should change my pick from Italy win to a draw as I had a feeling it would be one. This is making for a very bad year in Italian football and I send my regrets to the Italians living in Canada and the USA. That said, the USA came out to play today unlike their match with the Czechs ? in the end the draw was a fair outcome and that?s all that mattered. The Italians looked horrible on the field today and the foul against McBride deserved a RED card what an arrogant thing to do throwing your elbow like that.

While I may have lost status in the ESPN Picks game, I can?t complain because this has been a great weekend for football with some awesome games and well deserved wins. As for me, I?m happy to see more African teams progress.

Gotta love the World Cup and love it even more when Holland raises it at the end.

  8. Curtisimo Says:

Exactly. Ghana did what the US should’ve done in their 1st match- attack fast & direct before the Czechs set up defensively.

  9. Curtisimo Says:

Woops… my above comment should’ve read:

“The US obviously looked better than they did against the Czechs.”

Didn’t mean they obviously lookd better than Italy.

  10. Curtisimo Says:

Agree with the African teams, Gerard. Ivory Coast played the better football, IMO, even though the Dutch won & Ghana looked downright awesome at times. I really liked their direct attacking style.

Didn’t see the Angola match yesterday but I was very glad the Mexicans could only get a draw.

  11. gerard Says:

I guess you found partial relieve. Scotty, just be happy your not an Italian American - think of their day today. Ouch.

  12. stag133 Says:

To all you folks that said the US was the worst team in the tourament, and they are boring, and how did they get in the tourament… feck right off!

A very good day for USA Soccer.
A good showing in a very entertaining match against one of the giants of the footballing world, Italy…
Coupled with Ghana ripping the Czechs… leaves the entire group with something to play for in the last match.
    FANTASTIC.

The USA belongs in this tournament as much as anyone else does. We can PROGRESS to the next round “AGAIN”… with a solid performance and victory against a tough Ghana side.

Should prove an interesting last match in this group.

  13. stag133 Says:

    Oh…
and please don’t tell me Kasey Keller isn’t that good. He is an excellent keeper… has been for years. We have a better collection of goal keepers than most teams in the world to choose from.

  14. Curtisimo Says:

They’ve (the US) played more football than England has so far ;)

  15. joshuad Says:

I don’t know how anyone could be suprised by what Ghana did today, unless you’ve never seen them play. They bossed the midfield against Italy and did it again today. For me, no surprises.

The US team performed fairly well today. It makes a difference when you actually show up. Keller made some great saves, but he’s still no Friedel. Pope was our only poor player. He was directly responsible for their goal and to go to ground on a yellow card when you have a ref that’s out of his mind with red cards is foolish. I play defender and almost never go to ground unless I need to. He didn’t need to.

I’m glad De Rossi was finally found out. I’ve watched him play all year and he’s a dirty player. Every time I see him play he does something like what he did today and I hope referees pay attention to him. He needs to be sorted out. Against Poland and Switzerland he commited fouls where he should have been sent off from both matches. I wish we could have punished Italy because of his sending off.

I think Ghana’s the stronges team in our group. Their only weakness is finishing. We’ll be very lucky to advance.

  16. Andez Says:

don’t u get an impression the referees seem to enjoy it when flashing off the red cards? How many red cards we have had in this year’s World Cup so far? Sure, My Game Is Fair Play as FIFA’s motto goes, and some of the fouls did deserve a red card, but please: the men in black, a little bit more common sense would u? Nobody wants to watch a 11 vs 10, or 10 vs 9 in the US game for that matter, it just spoiled everything.

  17. junialum Says:

A little about the Czech match. I think Rosicky and Nedved were the Czech’s only hope of going forward convincingly. Rosicky did well. Taking on players and going forward trying to look for that killer pass. Czech lost because:
    a) they backline was a joke even before the red.
    b) their midfield simply chose to spray long balls in all directions. Only Rosicky and Nedved did not do that
    c) Their striker was a virtual passenger.

I don’t think Rosicky is a defensive type of player. Wenger and maybe Keown will work on that I guess. I see him playing alongside Fabregas with Fab sitting deeper in. Reyes and Ljungberg/Helb on the wings. Debatable but entirely possible.

    =====

Congrats USA! What a spirit to stay alive in such a manner. Its this kind of effort that could see them qualify in the final round. All they need to do now is to beat Ghana (which is not easy btw) convincingly for goal difference and hope that the Italy / Czech game throws up a win and not a draw or they would have to make their goal difference count.

  18. gerard Says:

Stag133 your right the US side deserves to be there as they earned their berth in the tourney. I want Footy to do well in the US because of the trickle down effect and how then soccer will get more attention even here north of your 49th parallel (well not in my case (43.20; -81.34) Canada. It would serve us well if the US won the damn thing knowing American ways. The USA team could do what Lance Armstrong did for cycling if they won it all. America loves a winer.
I think the like all good thing’s the US is going to have to wait, like so many others have for that coveted trophy of gold.

THE RUB: I don’t think the US can’t beat this Ghana side, think of it on paper Czechs clobber USA, Italy just wins over Ghana, Ghana beats Czechs cleanly, Italy and US draw. What comes next must be something like Ghana …………….
or visa versa, possible Czech win or a draw with Italy - the Italians look terrible.
I hope the US might win for soccer in North America, but I just can’t believe it’s now in 2006.
The US is still with only 1 point. Italy has 4. The Czechs and Ghana 3. The US has to win and anything else won’t do!

Turning into an interesting competition in this group.

  19. gerard Says:

Up until earlier in the week there were no reds shown. This weekend made up for that. This game might be the most carded game of the tournament. This REF was drunk with power or just drunk, either works for me. It was terrible! Imagine a dude like that in the EPL, no spare me the thought. Sep B. was there and I wonder if that had any bearing on his poor and rash decisions. He was from El Salvador or Ecuador. What a whack job, I thought he spoiled the game.

The one good call was the Rossi Red though - what a jack ass move that was in the big Cup with all those cameras. Doh!

  20. gerard Says:

I guess they miss Jan Koller and thus the long balls. Never thought much of always relying on that play. I think Ivory Coast might of tried it too often in their match with Holland as well.

  21. NorthBankGunner Says:

Quick feet, vision, powerful running, eye for goal.. not affraid to shoot, this guy will become a superstar with Arsenal! I can see him supplying numerous defence splitting passes next year.

  22. nipuna Says:

Funnily, I thought Rosicky’s passing improved after the Czech were down to 10 men. That’s another Arsenal trait - play better when down one man. :-)

But seriously, he has to improve his defensive side if he wants to play in the middle. If he takes a year to settle down, I would hate to see him confined to the wings (like Hleb) during that time.

  23. Andez Says:

Guys, Rosicky is an ATTACKING midfielder. I understand the worry some of u had, of that he may be too small for the Premiership. But Wenger doesn’t bring him in to tackle ppl, he’s a straight replacement for Pires, will be offering us some creative flair. Either he will play in the “hold” taking up Dennis’ position, or he will play in the either flank. He will not play in central midfield that much is for so.

Of whether he’ll cope with the physical nature of the EPL? It depends on his intelligence IMO. Not every small player fails to make an impact with the Premiership. Cesc is small, Pires is not the strongest player neither, nor did Overmars, Zola the likes. Those players made it because they play intelligent football, knowing how to make up of their size with their clever control and timing to release the ball. The one who hasn’t made it yet, like Reyes, it’s because he never used his brain on the pitch.

  24. Mazza Says:

The U.S.A put up a good show. They made Italy look ordinary. Reyna can be my wing man anytime.

Ghana were impressive. Those African teams are like chalk and cheese depending on whether they go a goal up or a goal down. Give them a start and they are hard to handle.

Rosicky still impressed me. The Czech Republic are an ordinary side and he was their only real threat.

Let’s hope Henry stops being unselfish today and just shoots.

  25. nipuna Says:

Henry and France need a big game tonight.

  26. stag133 Says:

I predict a US win over Ghana.

  27. DannyT Says:

USA showed more heart against Italy, for sure. They were the worst team in the competition after their first game, now they’re merely one of the worst teams in the competition.

USA threw away a great opportunity to beat a very poor Italian team. They got a fluke goal to level the match and then Italy rightfully had a player sent off - but USA lost their discipline and threw any chance of winning down the toilet with stupid tackles in front of the ref.

Italy are really dire in this tournament. The team is old and on its last legs. They have no pace at all, it’s like watching a bunch of tortoises. Ghana should beat USA comfortably - but you can never tell with African teams, they blow hot and cold all the time.

  28. joshuad Says:

There’s NOTHING weak about Ghana. I guarantee there’s not a team in the tournament, including Brazil or Argentina, that want’s to play them right now. If Brazil plays Ghana in the next round they’d better have their shite together by then.

  29. Fred Says:

after this latest debacle……….i think the US has a better chance of qualifying than France …HA!

i know most of their players are old and soon to receive their pensions….but still……..they can’t be this bad!
domenech or whatever his name is deserves a shooting. bringing in trezequet at 90 mins!

  30. gerard Says:

What a weekend. The giant killers are on the loose and the giants are looking a little grey at the edges.

    France draws to Korea?
    Italy draws with USA?
    Ghana beats Czechs?
    Mexico goes down to Angola?
    Brazil looks weak to Australia.
    Croatia draws with Japan?
Holland fights to hold the win against Ivory Coast?

In terms of picks and my ego, yes ouch I lost a lot of ground, but in terms of this beautiful game I can only celebrate. Awesome games each one. My biggest disappointment had to be France though, they have so much talent at home and what gets sent out but the old guard, patently arrogant and the writing is on the wall for this team. Sad really.

  31. ScottyUS Says:

Ghana are without their two goal scorers, so there’s that.

The thing about American teams is we’re lazy by nature, but love to prove people wrong. Ghana will be no walk in the park, but I fancy us in this one. Pope or no Pope.

  32. ScottyUS Says:

France did enough to win. Unlucky. And 9 times out of 10 Titi puts that away. Great keeping.

Ghana are peaking as the Czechs look gassed. Running the U.S. around the pitch in the heat hurt them. Luckily for the U.S. they’re one of the most fit teams in this. I see us getting 3 points, but of course, its out of our hands.

Japan and Croatia succumbed to a heat wave. Thought Japan looked good, as did S. Korea.

It is an interesting World Cup, even outside of the horrible refereeing.

  33. ScottyUS Says:

True. But we don’t have to wonder how their day is. We can just ask stag. ;)

  34. gunner4life Says:

Playing Rosicky and Cesc in the middle of Arsenal’s midfield is a recipe for failure in the EPL and CL. Neither of them are particularly strong in defending and tackling. A better option imho is to have Rosicky or Reyes and Ljunberg or Walcott attack down the wings or cut into the middle to link up with Henry or RvP or Adebayor or Bendtler. And have Gilberto or Cesc or Lauren or Song (Diaby when he is back) play in the middle with Cesc playing when we are at home when we attack more and Lauren or Song/Diaby playing when we are away where more defence is needed. Hopefully Wenger goes out and find an experience & tall defensive midfielder as I don’t believe Song can cut it.

  35. stag133 Says:

    I am an Italian-American…
    why is it “ouch”?

I am American… I want the US to do well.
Frankly… I don’t care much about the Italian team, any more than I do about the Polish team, or Canadian Team… Thats my full ethnic make-up.

I’d rather see France do well… with Titi & Vieira and Wiltord in there… and rooting for the underdogs is always very enjoyable.

The World Cup for me… is all about the beautiful game, and the great passion of the fans all over the globe. Sit back and enjoy the ride.
I root for good football… and we’ve had our share of that so far…

  36. gerard Says:

In my many years, I find this WC one of the most interesting because of its diversity and abstractions.

I truly love watching the African attacking football. I never liked the kind of footy the Greeks won the Euro Cup with and which Chelsea has adapted. It’s just boring for me.

Ghana played very well! Holland did the job in that Calvinist way even if it wasn’t as exciting as the Ghana game. The Czechs have owned Holland for a few years, to watch them falter to Ghana, most certainly sent a shiver down my oranje spine.

I mean it when I say that I hope the USA wins. It would be good for all of us on this continent. With Americas money we could have such a fantastic league of real stars. Toronto is talking about trying to get an MLS team. In that way I want the US to do well….
RUB: but Scotty and Stag133 this is a very steep hill for the US to traverse. Ghana is playing like a mountain.

All this said, I really hope for the US win; may the ball bounce for them favourably.

That US / Italy game had to be the worst REFing I have ever encountered, except for maybe one those short video clips where the fans literally kick the REF off the pitch and scurryng through a hole in the fence, in a South American match.
With Seps Bladder :) and that bully German Beckenbauer :( sitting in the stands, it was shameful. On the World Cup Stage, it was simply inexcusable - heads should role and not the head of some African executive of the FIFA scalping his match tickets (just take his hand). All this against the backdrop of an Italian team riddled with the scandal back home and The Old Lady of Turin possibly being relegated to playing in Serie C. The whole damn thing is abstract. You could right a book about it.

ScottyUS, you said “an interesting World Cup”. Your damn right, you couldn’t dream up this XXXX (rhymes with tits).

  37. stag133 Says:

    Heeeeeey…

Scotty is alive. He’s even said a semi-positive word for our team USA… sort of…

    Come on Scotty will you.
How about legitimately standing up for the team against the torrent of crap being thrown at them on this site. Its ridiculous. f’em all…
Stomp on Ghana, and see you in the next round.

  38. nipuna Says:

Henry’s miss in the CL final and yesterday means that critics will continue to label him a big match choker. I know it doesn’t affect him or us Arsenal fans. But it will always prevent him from winning the biggest accolades in football.

  39. gunner4eva Says:

Even against the US, there were only five good players that the Czechs had - Cech, Jankulowski, Rosicky, Nedved and Poborsky. Even against Ghana, Nedved and Rosicky were doing what they supposed to be doing.

What probably did them in was the lack of an out and out striker - at least a good one. Rosicky scoring 2 - this cannot be expected to happen everyday, probably twice a blue moon.

The Czechs are going to hurt from not having Koller and Baros. Lokvenc has been pretty much useless and is now suspended for the game against Italy - so the Czechs as of now are knee deep in some really stinky stuff……

While that probably opens up possibilities for the US, i dont think they have the firepower to beat Ghana. If the Czechs dont make it, Ghana will.

  40. DannyT Says:

What crap? Are you saying USA are not one of the worst teams in the competition?

If you were from any other country you would be saying USA is crap like the rest of us. Because you’re from USA, you lose the plot as usual and start talking complete drivel based on nothing other than your absurd nationalism.

  41. gunner4life Says:

With so many world class players in the French team, one would expect Domenech to utilise those talent to maximum effect. Instead it had been one disappointment after another. Why is Trezeguet on the bench is anyone’s guess and especially when u need goals. No wonder Pires thinks Domenech is an idiot.

  42. Anonymous Says:

I think Rosicky did score 5 or 7 in the qualifiying games…

  43. pirate Says:

France played ok, but cared more about possession than actually scoring a goal and it came back to haunt them. In my view, the biggest plus from the game is that Zidane will be suspended for the final must win group game against Togo. Domenech is too much of an eejit to drop him - he didn’t take Pires or Giuly based on their star sign - and he’s too much of an idiot to base the team around Thierry instead.

Zidane was a truly amazing player and can still produce moments of sublime skill, but the legs are gone and he wants everyone to play at his pace. I know the french would have wanted to reduce the pace of the game as a major strength of the Koreans is to play a high, high tempo 90 minutes, but I doubt they intended to stop creating for 35 minutes. Because of his status, the french team instinctively look for Zidane as soon as they get possession and he then slows the whole game back down in the way Kanu used to do for us and it certainly doesn’t suit Henry…break from defence, pass to Zidane, Zidane to Makalele, Makelele to Zidane, Zidane to Malouda, Malouda to Zidane, Zidane to Abidal, Abidal to Makalele….Henry has decided not to bother. With Zidane out, France are forced to play hopefully Saha, but more likely Domenech will choose Dhorasoo (why?) or Trezeguet (why would you?), either way, neither player has Zidane’s skill to hold onto the ball for so long and will look to pass more quickly. For God’s sake Domenech, make Henry the centre of the team, play to his strength.

  44. Andez Says:

Even France build their game around Henry, Henry would still not be as effect as when he’s with Arsenal.

First, AW designed Arsenal’s game around Henry. By bringing in attacking players who suit Henry’s game. And designed an unique one-touch, counter attack game that bring out the best out of Henry.

Arsenal has an unique playing STYLE. As for France, their playing STLYE? What is it? Do they actually have one?

  45. chalfie Says:

holding the ball up and being a weak player dont really go together.

  46. stag133 Says:

Reality is… France didn’t take their chances, and paid DEARLY for it. Thats football.

But obvioulsy, the Vieira header was a GOAL. It clearly crossed the line.
What happened to using the goal line technology? or the “chip” in the ball.

That type of instance should NEVER occur in 2006, with all the cameras and technologies we possess.

Its a goal… France leads 2-0, and they win.

Now, they’ll just have to go out and maul Togo, IF they really want to move on to the next round. The ball is still in their court.

  47. Curtisimo Says:

I like to play the ‘if’ game too.

IF you were from the US perhaps you would bask in the glow of ‘absurd nationalism.’

IF the US had beatean Trinidad & Tobago, 2-0, they’d've beaten Trinidad & Tobago, 2-0.

IF England ever played up to their supposed talent level, maybe they’d quit getting eliminate don penalties.

IF England wouldn’t have won that one World Cup on home soil, they’de be in the same boat as the US, but still walking around saying how good they are.

IF the English press would’ve done their homework instead of just assuming the dumb Yanks couldn’t have possibly beaten England in the 50 WC, perhaps the English papers wouldn’t have printed a 10-1 scoreline when England had actually lost 1-0.

IF the US advances to the 2nd round, they still won’t get the credit they deserve b/c of European arrogance.

IF Torsten Frings doesn’t handle the ball on the line in the 02 WC perhaps the US can steal a win from Germany in match they outplayed them in & advance to the Semis.

IF McBride is a few feet to the left or right of Buffon & Beasley’s goal stands, the US beats Italy & still doesn’t get credit.

IF Jan Koller slips on the 1st goal, Rosicky’s shot flies wide or he doesn’t beat Keller 1 v 1 in the 1st match, the US tie the Czechs or lose IF Reyna’s shot doesn’t ring off the inside of the post.

    IF… IF… IF…

The only teams in this tournament who have truly looked ‘good’ so far are Argentina, Holland (can be questioned), Ivory Coast (& they have 2 losses), Spain, Ghana & Ecuador, of all people.

  48. stag133 Says:

    Danny…
If I am not mistaken, they did pretty damned well in the last World Cup, didn’t they?

I know the rankings don’t mean much, but were not 31st or 32nd… sorry.

    so NO.
We are NOT EVEN CLOSE to one of the worst teams in the competition.
That statement is absolute f’n BULLS**T.

We’re middle of the pack. And that ain’t too shabby for a country in which Soccer is about 5th or 6th on the importance scale.

We drew with Italy, even being a man down.
    Pretty damned good.
You don’t have to like it… but its just facts.

  49. DannyT Says:

I don’t really care how USA does to be honest, and what they did 4 years ago is irrelevant. The fact is, they’re playing like one of the worst teams in the tournament. Sure, that could change, but I doubt it.

It’s a fact that you drew against Italy, but it’s also a fact that Italy are rubbish; a draw against them is no big deal - even the goal you did get was an og howler.

  50. DannyT Says:

France has no chance of winning this thing. Last night, Vieira played like he did in his last season at Arsenal, terrible, but better than his impersonation of a 65 year old in his opening match.

France don’t look to clever at the back either, this team is full of big names who are at the end of their careers - and the ones that aren’t are not very good. The future really looks dire for France.

  51. DannyT Says:

Yeah, and USA have looked like one of the worst teams in the competition so far - in my opinion. I didn’t say they WERE the worst, just that they’ve played sh*tty football.

What’s IF got to do with it?

  52. Seattlegooner Says:

Doesn’t really matter how it went in, does it? If I remember correctly, England won their first game on an og howler. Points are points no matter how they come.

  53. Curtisimo Says:

“If you were from any other country you would be saying USA is crap like the rest of us.”

That’s what it’s got to do with it.
