I know that this a bit late, but I had to wait until Rick L got back Stateside to confirm the award. Without further ado, on behalf of Arsenal America, I’d like to congratulate Sachin Gandhi, the winner of the Arsenal America World Cup Pickem’ Challenge.
Sachin finished with a 99% accuracy rate, making only 13 incorrect picks throughout the tournament.
For his skills as a prognosticator, Sachin will soon become the proud owner of a 2005-06 Home shirt.
Congratulations Sachin, and thanks to everyone who participated in our challenge. Arsenal America was the single largest private group on all of ESPN Soccernet!

Yeah it was a close race though. You and a few others set the early pace…I think those final group games ended up being good for me and made up some ground. But I still can’t believe I lasted until the end. I was sure the second rounds would have done me in, but somehow I survived. Then I was sure the quarters would be the turning point but got lucky there as well. And then there was the final. Paul, who finished only 4 points behind, made sure there was no margin for error.

Thanks Andez. No I never bet any money on soccer games. Not sure why but just not keen on that idea. And I suppose seeing the entire Italian League thing recently will not make me any more inclined to put money on these games down in the near future either.

I give my congratulations to SachinG. I just found out today about Arsenal America and I would have loved to play in your private group. (I ended up #23 in the world on ESPN Soccernet with “Wishing I Was There…”, but I can’t top the #6 guy in Sachin).

Easier to predict how Germany and Argentina will end as opposed to saying how Bolton would do against Newcastle. Honestly, I prefer to stay away from regulated betting. I think it will tarnish my enjoyement for the game. I would be thinking more about the result as opposed to enjoying the game.
Betting on the EPL, not a chance
I have seen people who have bet money on the game and their focus ends up on the score-line and the clock..nothing more…
For this world cup poll, I just picked my results and left it as is. In most cases, I didn’t go back and change them. I tried as much not to think too much about the games. I changed my picks on maybe 5-6 occassions and I got them mostly wrong (example, changed Argentina to beat Ivory Coast to a tie, changed Tunisia - Saudi draw to a Tunisia win). I knew there was no money involved so I was not concerned. Still can’t believe the end result though!

One never knows with these picks and how they end up. I want to share a funny story about the 2002 World Cup. We had an office pool on the world cup picks. A few of us were sure we had made the right picks as we knew our stuff and most of the other people were not soccer fans. But the winner of the pool who was a girl who had never seen a single soccer game in her life. When we asked her how she managed to pick the right results, she said something like ?I just picked the countries I would most like to visit as the ones to win their games?. What? That was a humbling experience!

Predicting games is akin to playing the lottery. Sometimes it actually helps not too know too much. Less is more. For example I thought Iran would do well because alot of the side plays in Germany. The average fan wouldn’t have a clue about that and would predict them to do f-all, which they did.
