Greatness should be judged at the highest level possible. There are players with great ability who aren?t necessarily great players. If a player doesn?t leave his mark, then what makes him great? Greatness requires a legacy, an end product. A great player is one who consistently does the routine and the difficult better than his peers over a long period. A great player is one who does these things at the highest level and wins in the process. I cringe when I hear the word used over and over like it?s OK to just throw it around like a basketball. No, that won?t do. I hear announcers claim a great shot that wasn?t even on target, or a great pass that rolled over the goal-line, its intended target never having a chance to reach it. Great?
Someone commented how Newcastle are ?great? going forward and how Rio Ferdinandis a ?great? defender. Well if that?s so, then how do you describe recent Barcelona teams that usually played attractive football and won things, or the Ajax, Liverpool, and Milan teams that ruled Europe with distinction? And you certainly can?t mention Rio in the same sentence as Lilian Thuram, Franco Baresi, or Daniel Pasarrella much less Franz Beckenbauer. There are tiers of greatness among the greatest of the greats. The Peles, Maradonas, Cruyffs, and DiStefanos are examples of greatness at the highest level. Cubillas, Blokhin, Bergkamp, Romario, Belodedici, Weah, Antognoni, and even Hugo Sanchez were players for an era rather than all-time, so belong in the next tier. They and so many others were players of great ability but never quite left their mark for a sustained period on the international scene. It?s fair to say that a player might find himself in a country or a team that doesn?t have the resources or players to reach the international tournaments ? George Best for example was the classic victim. Duly acknowledged but the hierarchy should be based on excellence as defined by consistency and achievement at the highest level, not just superior ability during a period of local success. If not, then nearly every professional player is great, assuming it?s his ability he is judged by.
Zinedine Zidane will be criticized for lashing out against Marco Materazzi. No amount of violent play should be condoned. But in his defense ? if I may ? there must have been a harsh verbal exchange between the two to cause that reaction. Nevertheless, it was way over the top and unforgivable. Will it do more than just slightly tarnish Zidane?s legacy as an all-time great player? I hope not. It shouldn?t in my eyes. Zidane (no pun intended) was head and shoulders above his peers for an entire generation, clearly the next ?world?s greatest player? after Maradona. There were cases for Matthaus, Gullit, Baggio, Ronaldo, but save arguably Ronaldo in spurts, it was Zidane who ascended to and stayed at heights rarely touched by mortals. There seemed to always be a kid that did tricks other kids couldn?t do. There was always a kid who?s touch, execution, and temperament gave him an advantage the others didn?t have or could answer when facing said prodigy. Zidane was that kid. But ironically, it was the most elusive of those characteristics ? temperament ? that let him down in the end. Long live Zizou!

In the same elk….recently I read the words legend and Ljungberg together…..
Now Freddie has proven to be a valued contributor, a source of goals, a fine team man.
But IMO nowhere near legend status.
Recent legend cases….Adams, Bergkamp, Henry, Vieira,….all rare players who contributed much over an extended period.
Interestingly, the bar for being an Arsenal legend is rising. A testimony to the style and success the Wenger era has brought.

Great player, a legend. Won big cups in Holland, Italy and England. Certainly one of Arsenals all time greats. Loved by all and respected by the greats.
Dennis Bergkamp - retire the #10 jersey as no one should ever wear it again.
After the testimonial match I realized it was the end of an era for me to. He brought me to Arsenal and now we move on without him. I’m really going to miss him.

Gerard, agree with your sentiments wholly.
We were incredibly blessed to have Bergkamp commit to us for such a long period including his prime.
However even for a man of Bergkamps standing I wouldn’t retire a number. For me numbers belong to the club and players ‘use’ them for a time. Particularly a number like 10 - perhaps the most sought after number in football. There are other neat ways to recognise ‘our greats’. And Bergy definately deserves to be remembered.

I read today that AC Milan’s punishment has been reduced and that they will be allowed to take the 4th Italian Champions League spot. Does this mean that we could meet them in qualifying? That would be most unfortunate!

This was just as I had expected. I knew that the initial punishment was harsh so that it can be reduced on appeal. This way, it looks like justice has been done. I also had a strong feeling that only Juve would be demoted and so it has been.
I don’t think we will meet AC Milan in qualifying as seedings are taken into account while the draw is made.

Shame to hear that Ljungberg is out for a while with one of his persistent injuries.
The real shame is for Fredde.
He had a rough year injury-wise last year….this year he has a bit of competition to deal with on the flanks with Hleb, Rosicky and Reyes not to mention van Persie and Walcott.
He really needs to shake off these injuries and get into the groove again.
If he can’t he may find himself down the pecking order.

Fantastic Post i must say…
The one thing I don’t agree with you is Bergkamp being in the second level of greatness, and the reason why i don’t agree is subjective, because he is my favorite and from the first day i saw him til saturday i honestly believed and thought he was the best player on the planet, am i crazy? no, it’s just my opinion and i’ve always thought all is relative in football. I think Bergy could do what Zidane has done, just the timing wasn’t right, the teammates, whatever, who knows, but it’s hard to compare and say who’s in the second level.
One of my best friends is the biggest AC Milan and Italy fan you’ll meet… and trust me, he believes GROSSO is A GREAT PLAYER! in his heart, he’s convinced, simply due to the joy that a couple of goals AND EVEN A DIVE brought him! who am i to judge? I hate C. Ronaldo but the kid is good, on the other hand I CAN”T STAND REYES but i love him as long as he wears our shirt.
Zizou will be remembered for his greatness and not for the headbutt on the dirtiest player in Serie A through Z but for how amazing and GREAT he was. NOW, his violent act was, like you said, unforgivable, and this is when you have to look at greatness as a term to be used for players on and off the pitch! Bergkamp is Class, a class apart and so is Henry, Adams was the same and even though Freddie is not a Legend he is to me, the same goes for Lauren and Kolo and even RVP why? cuz i love them and play for a club called Arsenal.

You can use different criteria to judge your top ten greatest.
Greatest player of all time. Greatest player of the modern era. Greatest World Cup player. Greatest player I have seen in the flesh. Greatest player for Arsenal etc. etc.
Were Ferenc Puskas and Alfredo di Stefano great players? Did Just Fontaine’s individual record at one World Cup make him great? Was Greorge Best, burned out at 25, great?
If only it was that easy. I am a little too young for Pele and George Best let alone someone like Alex James or Cliff Bastin. I was disappointed at Cryuff not going to the 78 World Cup but I never really saw him play. Being Irish any list of 100 Greatest players would have to include Liam Brady and Paul McGrath.
For me Maradona is the greatest player of the last 25 years. No question. He could win any game on his own. After that, there is a cast of a hundred (out of the last 25 years). Zico, Socrates, Platini, Kempes, Henry, Bergkamp, Adams, Tigana, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Shevchenko, Weah, Kempes, Ardiles, Van Basten, etc. etc. etc.

Valid point about the #’s belonging to the club.
Maybe they need to build a gallery wing or install one at the Grove, then commission great artists to make portraits or busts.
