Loyalty in football these days is as rare as rain in the Sahara desert. It all money … just money. Its all about “Who will pay me how much for how long??”. All the other rubbish about the players not getting along with another player or falling out with the coach is just made up by the player’s agent most of the time to make sure that the player gets out of the club and the agent gets paid more. Lets look at a couple of cases shall we…
The first case that always springs to mind is that of a certain Luiz Ronaldo of Inter Milan and Real Madrid fame. He crocked his knee up , sat on the bench at Inter for 2 damn years , got paid his entire salary , healed his knee up went and tapped in 6 goals for Brazil at the WC and immediately said he wanted to move to Real Madrid. Huh???….how about helping the club who stood by you when you needed them?? Now people will immediately start about saying that he fell out with Hector Cuper and thats why he wanted to leave. Why do you think he fell out?..its probably because he wanted to leave and the coach didnt like it and told Fat Ronaldo?.. who immediately blew things up again saying that .. “I wanted to stay ..but things have deteriorated”..blah blah blah…all blown up. Its all media talk…
Luis Figo..Barca to Real Madrid….How can you do this??….People will talk about having a business like approach and that its all professional …moving to your direct competitor. They’ll say “Its just business”. How can you move to Real Madrid after being an absolute pivot at your previous club and knowing everything about all your teammates , all the coach’s strategies…everything? If he’d moved abroad I wouldn’t have minded , but the same league???
This now brings to me to why I started this piece in the first place…ASHLEY COLE
Ash is a brilliant left back , arguably the best in the world. He offers you so much going forward can dash back the entire length of the pitch to help out in defence , clear numerous balls off the line .. I could go on here. But does that give him the right to apparently slate the club he’s still part of in public??…just to put more pressure on them to sell him?…I know Arsene gives his players a lot of space..treats them with respect and as human beings and trusts their judgement unlike a certain 63 year old Scot. But isn’t this taking things too far…Isn’t Ash doing this knowing…”Hey Arsene’s always going to back me in public..Let me do what I want”…Not inviting AW to his wedding is personal…I’m not worried about that but blasting the board in public during the transfer window is sick ..really sick. I dont care if you’re the world’s best left back , I dont care if you’re a big star , you just dont wash dirty linen in public. It might be now argued that Arsenal reported him to the FA…so??…Who asked him to go and meet Mourinho??…Its like saying…”I want to keep Adrian Mutu at Chelsea..so what if he drugged himself ..He’s our player”… Its a blatant contradiction by Ash coming out with such a damning statement. I dont know what the truth is , I’m just going by what was revealed but if what has been revealed is indeed the whole truth then I’m sorry but … Ashley has to go …. keeping him just coz he’s a brilliant footballer is stupid… he’s fallen hugely in my eyes and much as I’ll miss his devastating speed and skill I wouldnt want to keep him in my squad…what AW does ofcourse is a totally different thing..
On a final note..Patrick Viera went to Juve..which is fine…but if he returns to ManU as the papers are saying..then I’ll be damned….and if RVN stays at ManU after all and Paddy joins him there……….I dont know what to say…apart from..”You’re a big hypocrite”…

You have to remember that players get pushed out the door too. They might want to stay with the club they love, but the club says sorry you’re not good enough, get out!
You have to remember that only a very small percentage of professional footballers earn enough money to last them the rest of their natural lives. On top of that, they could walk out on the pitch tomorrow, break their leg and it’s all over - then what? They might have a big house, wife and kids to support and no future in football. So they have to take the money while they can, and if that means making millions by switching clubs willy nilly then it’s probably the right thing to do.
It’s money that has made the difference, in the old days you could afford to be loyal, now you can’t. If the general public was in the players position they would do exactly the same thing 9 times out of 10. Why? Because footballers are human beings just look you - they do exactly what you would do.
But,I agree there is a certain way of doing things - and Ashley Cole has done it all wrong. But that’s life.
July 26th, 2006 at 8:10 am
I agree it is a dog eat dog world.
However players have contracts. If they are being asked to leave and they dont want to the club need to buy them out of their contract.
If a player stays loyal to a club, like Arsenal they will be rewarded in a way that they wont need to worry about money.
The average prem salary is 15k a week. The average salary in the UK is 30k a year.
If a player gets injured an cant play again, the insurance will pay out to cover their contract.
There are no such things as poor prem players.
When players like Ashley Cole want to move for money they are being mis lead. Earning 30k, 40k or 90k a week on a 4 year contract is enough to last you all of your life if you live within your means.
Dont forget they get player bonuses as well as boot deals and other marketing stuff.
A player like Ashley is a great example of a one club player, like Tony Adams.
He came through the youth team and was on the books from around 13 years old.
They have turned him into the best left back in the world, he started life as a forward but at Arsenal he has found his niche.
If you look at Fabregas AFC made him into the player he is. Dont get me wrong he was talented when he arrived, but Barca thought Messi was better and turned all of their attention on to him.
He was given a chance at Arsenal and he feels he owes the club something. Which is nice. He could have gone to Spain this Summer and was offered silly money, 4 or 5 times his 10k a week he is on, but he might not even make the bench for Barca or Madrid.
I think every London based gooner is upset with Ashley. We like to see local boys do well. Boys that have supported the club all of their lives. this is because in them we can see ourselves, a fan who has made it on to the pitch.
Ashley now has advisors, and agents, and PA people. He needs to keep it real and remember where he came from and 10 years ago, he was probably spending all of the money he and his family had to play football for Arsenal.

Fellas, Great Post and fantastic replies…
excuse my shameless plug but a while back i wrote somestuff on my blog about this:
http://demianarriaga.blogspot.com/2006/02/sports-loyalty-pt-1_08.html
and
http://demianarriaga.blogspot.com/2006/02/sports-loyalty-pt-2.html
Check em out if you have time, if not, let me sum up i guess.
Loyalty is very hard to find obviously, and that is why i love players like Bergkamp, Gattuso for all his passion for Milan, same with Maldini, Del Piero with Juve, through thick and thin, Schelotto for Boca, etc etc. That is preciless to me, whether you are great or you suck. i love J Aliadiere cuz i KNOW he loves the club and we are lucky to have many players lik him, even ash.
The thing is that as people, regardless of how much we love something or someone, one little thing can mess it all up. like when you have a girlfriend and she does one little thing that is so freakin annoying you could honestly break up…. BUT if you really love her, you wont let a little thing affect.
Maybe the board really fucked up ash, we’ll never know, but i do think the love for the club and the fans is greater and you should know to watch your words. In Ash’s defense i believe that its a matter of Loyalty with himself more than if he loves the club or not… .he might feel wrongly done and until he says something directly i will support him, or in other words i will not hate him or want him out.
I used to like barca a lot and Figo was my fave, when he switched he broke my heart and i hated him forever, but he’s damn good…. now madrid sold him and showed not even an 8th of the loyalty he showed them when switching.
I posted something on “A Great Player” and i think loyalty and greatness depend on the man and the circumstance, and not an overall ideal. Of course there are universal loyalty and greatness parameters but to me the greatest fit in both.
peace

It goes THREE way.
As Danny pointed out, when a player starts to lose his effectiveness, he’ll get pushed out of the door as well.
Also, FANS. Fans today are getting less patiented. TODAY’S HERO could easily turn into TOMORROW’S ZERO.
The number of times I read from Arsenal fans suggesting players like Ljungberg, Pires were FINISHED I lost count. Those are the players who have done so much for the club at the past, yet they couldn’t even gain a little BENEFIT OF DOUBT from their own fans.
I can forsee in a few years’ time, when Henry, the king of Arsenal TODAY, inevitably get caught up by mother time and loses a yard of two of his deadly pace, ppl would start to jump onto his back.
I think most of the footballers today would realize that. So it’s difficult to demand them for loyality unless the club and the fans would back them up when they get a career-threaten injury, or loss of form.
July 26th, 2006 at 8:47 am
A very good point from chalfie as well.
Yeah today i would not be naive enough to ask for loyality. But there is a bottom line for everything. As a player, the least u can do is to show the - PROFESSIONALISM.
When u signed a contract, it’s your own sense of honor and dignity to honor it.
When u try to flirt around with other club behind your club’s back, and been seemingly doing everything u could to upset your current employer and jump to the bigger ship, sure, you have your own right doing it. Everybody has his right to look for a better living.
Yet… you lose the RESPECT from others. You’ll lose your honor and dignity as well.
A bigger pay check, IMO, is more easily to get than the RESPECT you gain.
July 26th, 2006 at 9:22 am
Andez is spot on about professionalism. I mean lots of players have rucks with their managers or chairmen over contracts - they don’t all write a book on it ripping into the club, it’s pathetic.
If you want to leave, hand in a transfer request and leave, don’t go see another team behind the club’s back and break the rules, especially as you are bound to get found out anyway. You can always write a book when it’s all over.
Pure selfishness. As far as I’m concerned, I couldn’t care less if Cole stays or goes, but if he does go he definitely needs replacing.
July 26th, 2006 at 9:29 am
I dont want a player to be at AFC that does not want to be there, but at the same time I am upset that he feels he is not wanted at AFC.
I agree he needs replacing and I am sure AW will do that, especially as it seems Clichy might be out for the start of the season.
However seeing one of your own on the pitch is something that makes you happy as a local lad.
On the CL point, I read the rules about having local players, and they have to have been at the club for three years between the age of 15 and 21. And we need four of them if we want to have a squad of 25.
July 26th, 2006 at 9:42 am
Injury shocker- Freddie Ljungberg out for the start of the season.
As I said at the end of last season, there isn’t really any point in counting him as member of the squad anymore as he is totally unreliable.
Shame, he is a genuinely great player when fully fit.
July 26th, 2006 at 9:56 am
when on the pitch he is reliable.
Some players take ages to come back from injuries, but he is one that just wants to play.
He is a great player and has been a great servant for the club.
His injuries will allow others the chance in the first team, but he plays with the spirit that is required at AFC.
July 26th, 2006 at 10:41 am
If a players retires early he will not strav. There are plenty of opportunities for players who quit early in their careers ..
1- You can be a soccer coach ( I am sure he can make enough money ..maybe not as much..)
2- do something with marketing
3- Sports agent
4- work for a sports channel or so (like Shearer …)
.
.
.
MVB stoped playing when he was 28 … he coaches..
I see many players that never even made to MLS or even USL and they coach and make enough living …
July 26th, 2006 at 10:43 am
As a fan .. idont care … just get me a good CB and a great LB … and u can sell A. Cole. But please dont sell him to Chelsea … Let his value drain rather than seeing him playing against us.
July 26th, 2006 at 11:32 am
It’s hardly a shock, he’s always injured and probably always will be - he just can’t seem to go more than 3 games without picking up a knock during a game or in training. He must be made of glass.
July 26th, 2006 at 11:33 am
And sell him now if you’re going to, don’t want him going for a knock down fee.
July 26th, 2006 at 11:56 am
Andez…when Titi loses his pace he will play the way Bergie did … support striker… and with his huge assist rate he’ll never have a problem …. that said .. even if he isnt that good 4 years down the line … no true gooner will ever ever criticize Titi … why .. coz he chose “loyalty” over money … and that to me is far far more important than all the dough in the world…
About Freddie n Pires .. yes ppl criticized them .. me included .. but its true .. Freddie is nowhere near the player he is …no wait thats not the point … yes Freddie is loyal and yes I will keep him … for an extra year and let him leave on a free … to give him more time..thats what AW does anyway….
Yes its dog eat dog … yes clubs kick players out as well … but its invariably cause they dont perform …. very rarely will you see a club kick out a player who has performed….
July 26th, 2006 at 11:57 am
I was being sarcastic. Feel sorry for him, he gets laid up for weeks due to migraines and is a walking food allergy apparently.
July 26th, 2006 at 1:03 pm
Loyalty?
The player has a few good years to make his money. If YOU had the chance to make a LOT more money at a different company, MOST would. You don’t know what tomorrow brings. You could break your leg and never play again.
As mentioned, there is no club loyalty. So you spend your career at a club, busting your ass, sometimes taking LESS than you might make elsewhere, and they reward you with a BIG KICK IN THE ASS and a goodbye?! Its time to move on, as your not good enough anymore… or… take a pay cut… or… we WON’T give you more than a 1-year contract??!!!
There is no loyalty by the clubs, so I certainly don’t blame the players for getting as much money as they can, in their prime years. You might never get the chance to if you don’t.
See: MARK FIDRYCH of baseball fame.
SUPERSTAR Rookie season… offered big bucks… said don’t worry, I’ll wait, no hurry… INJURES his arm… never the same… never got the big contract… he’s a farmer now.
As a player, you owe it to yourself AND your family to get the most money you can.

Fergie’s got a problem, he’s been living off that generation of kids (Beckham, Giggs, Scholes, Nevilles etc.) for 10 years - he’s not very good at cultivating talent, all those kids were already there when he joined.
It’s true that Fergie has bought some great players to keep it all ticking over - mostly established players - but it’s all falliing apart now.
Still a decent team, but Fergie is suffering from senile dementure, he’s doing a cloughie. They need to sack him really.
July 26th, 2006 at 4:41 pm
Ferguson at Man Utd is an example of what happens when a manager stays too long.
No one made the hard football business decision to release him.
Why? Probably 2 reasons. First he is powerful and second entering the manager-go-round circus after years of stability is a horrible thought….easier to put it off.
July 26th, 2006 at 4:55 pm
I see Pennant has signed for Liverpool.
He has said a lot of very positive things about Liverpool and his own future.
I hope it turns out well…Jermaine make the most of this opportunity man!
Interesting signings by Liverpool….Belamy and Pennant. Talent with attitude! Let’s see how the go.
July 26th, 2006 at 8:21 pm
Call me romantic at worst, or an ideologue at best, but I still believe that what you reap is what you sow. I?d like to think that even in pro-sports you treat people with respect. That means being honest with the players as management and loyalty while under contract as a player. I don?t mean blind loyalty like the National Guard shooting students at Kent State in the 70?s. I mean pure common sense loyalty; you don?t go and have an under the table meetings in a public place, so you could be spotted and caught. Damn, don?t they have conference calling in the UK ? I mean did they need to sit in each other?s lap?
I think that if a club treats the workers at the stadium, the coaching staff, the ticket and front office, players and management with respect they will see the results. This breeds loyalty as well. It doesn?t have to be a ?dog eat dog world? and it isn?t for me.
Call me na?ve but I see it working in business where the workers take ownership of the products and this instills a pride, which results often in a successful business. How is professional sport any different?
I did a large triptych painting on this subject of crawling to the top because were told that?s what we must do. I say what good is the top if you cannot share it with those that helped put you there. I learned that from actual mountain-rock climbing where you also put a lot if not total trust in the person on belay.
The painting can be seen here < < http://www.gerardpas.com/lrahm/gallery/sisyp.html >>
As for ACole, he?s acting like a dog, why didn?t he just go about it in a dignified manner and while we may have cried to see him go, we wouldn?t look at him like the hyena I see today.
July 26th, 2006 at 9:52 pm
Like the picture Gerard.
Agree with your thoughts as well.
Your right, you don’t have to assume a dog eat dog mentality….in fact it is quite possible to promote the good of others and enjoy success as well.
Think of the people you like to be around….I bet they are those that encourage you to be the best you can be.
Cool book on the subject of our attitude in business - Love is the Killer App.

Summer of 2005
- Patrick Vieira leaves
- AW’s preferred replacement is Julio Baptista
- AW makes a bid of 16-17M Pounds
- Baptista doesn’t join
- Arsenal struggle for atleast half a season
Summer of 2006
- Sol Campbell leaves
- AW’s preferred replacement is Curtis Davies
- AW will NOT make a bid of 10M Pounds
- Davies doesn’t join
- …?
July 27th, 2006 at 6:59 am
abt the CB position…senderos and toure are now numbers 5 and 6……looks like first choice numbering combinations to me.
the only reason hes looking at davies is becos he is quite good and young but mainly becos he is english.
so davies is the only person that can stop senderos being first choice next season - if he is bought.
i however dont think that djorou is discouraged by the price for davies at all…..he is just waiting for brom to accept a bid, then he matches it.
the worst part though is that west brom know this, so they are playing it cool…they benefit any way it plays.
cant we give them song and cygan to sweeten the deal?
July 27th, 2006 at 7:00 am
sorry: in line number 4 replace djorou with wenger…..
there really should be an edit function for comments here …
July 27th, 2006 at 8:51 am
Derby County home page says that they have agreed a fee with Arsenal for Ryan Smith. That explains why he didn’t go on the preseason tour.
July 27th, 2006 at 9:22 am
Hmm, somewhat justifies my comments about not judging players on a testimonial performance - with Reyes99 glowing over Smith, a player that Wenger obviously knew was on his way out the door but played him regardless.
July 27th, 2006 at 11:22 am
Pennant is well on his way to having a career as stable and rewarding as Anelka’s.
July 27th, 2006 at 11:47 am
Wow, so three promising youngsters will not be with us this season, one player, a local boy who has had awful injuries is being allowed to leave and the other two are going on loan to Birmingham.
Larsson was probably the best known player, a true squad player as he could play in a number of positiions, I noted he and Muamba were both on our Austrian tour.
This leaves our DM position in a larger hole, as Song who is the same age as Muamba is being kept in the squad, but he has looked awful everytime he plays, and Larsson could have covered there.
Perhaps a player is going to arrive soon, as a DM.
July 27th, 2006 at 11:47 am
Like many Gooners, I too would like to see players, including another defender, brought in. However, I think some are making a little too much of Davies. With the CL run and a chance to play in the WC, both Senderos and Djourou have more experience than Davies who at this point is only a promising prospect who plays for a team that got relegated. While he could potentially help, I seriously doubt that Davies is the player to make or break our season. Furthermore, the 8 to 10 million pound valuation WBA are asking for is ludicrous and Wenger is right not to pay it. If WBA don’t come down, he will find another gem elsewhere.
Also, I don?t think you can say that Sol leaving will have the same impact that Viera?s departure had. Viera was our Captain and team leader. He played every game and much of our play revolved around him. That was not the case with Sol last year. He was in and out of the team regularly, and a significant argument can be made to say that we were often just as good or better a team when he was not there.
July 27th, 2006 at 12:21 pm
I would much rather see Muamba in the squad ahead of Song. I thought he did well in the Carling Cup games that he played in last year. Plus, Song has not been impressive at all. I don’t get it.
July 27th, 2006 at 12:24 pm
I think critisism of Song is overplayed, he’s not the answer right now but if you watch him without critical eyes he seems adequate enough to me.
July 27th, 2006 at 12:34 pm
Rafa is acting a bit desperate here because he realizes he has to depend more on Crouch than he thought. So he buys two pacey wingers with bad attitudes who he is hoping have learned their lessons and can feel like they’ve arrived (for one, again) at a big club. Not a bad idea, really. And Bellamy can find the net, too. Pennant has 9 goals in 143 appearances (club and country) so I don’t think he’ll hurt teams that much by scoring.
At least we got a little money on the deal.
July 27th, 2006 at 12:36 pm
For what its worth, most are giving him MOTM for the last friendly. There was a lot of red and white talent on that pitch, too.
But I like what I’ve seen of Muamba, too.
July 27th, 2006 at 1:24 pm
I am not impressed by Song neither. The thing is - I think I have seen him played less than 5 games I guess. I remember Henry’s first 5 games for Arsenal were pretty awful either.
Arsene Wenger HAD the OPTION to offer Song a contract or not, as he was on loan last season. Wenger did offer him a contract. So there must be something with this kid AW likes about it. And we are talking about a manager who’s biggest strength is spotting talent and turn them into good players.
AW been traing with Song for a year week in week out. We saw him less than 5 games. Period.
July 27th, 2006 at 1:36 pm
As for Curtis Davies. Again, I think i have saw him played only ONCE. I don’t know how many u guys saw.
Because he’s highly rated, and because he’s priced 10 million by WBA DOES NOT necessary mean he’s THAT good.
For a lesser manager, say Alan Padew. When he tried to sign Ashton, Norwich asked for 7 millions. As Mr. Pardew apart from knowing how to criticse Arsenal for not playing English players, he himself probably know NUT about other players from other countries. So whatever Norwich asked, he just had to pay for it.
Arsene Wenger has a wide network of scouts helping him to unearth talent all over the world. That’s where we got ourselves a Kolo, a Eboue, a Vieira, a Fabregas, a Senderos at the first place.
So if a team hold us to ransome just because they know we need a central half, why should we fall for it?
Wait a season till Davies’ contract running down WBA probably would force to sell him half-price. Just like the case with Rosicky. Had we bought him a year ago, he would have probably cost us twice.
July 27th, 2006 at 2:14 pm
I hope you are right. Plus, I do trust that Wenger knows what he is doing. However, from what I’ve seen (albiet only a limited amount) Muamba seems the better prospect.
July 27th, 2006 at 2:40 pm
Bellamy is a thug, but the guy can certainly play - he is a nightmare to defend. And from what I understand he was a Liverpool supporter as a kid. He will probably be able to curb his ego around Gerard and turn out to be a good signing for the Reds.
As for Pennant, I don’t question his ability, but I do wonder about his potential to self-destruct. He’s very much like Anelka who is also a good player that can generate results on the pitch, but never seems to be able to settle anywhere. You know what they say, “the one common element in all of your failed relationships is you.” Something will happen to make him feel victimized, and he won’t be able to let it go. Of course, I could be wrong and he could be the model professional now.
July 27th, 2006 at 6:58 pm
Absolutely correct, Andez.
How many people on this site have coached beyond kindegarten football or have scouted for more than under-7s? Excellent judges of players compared to Wenger.
July 27th, 2006 at 7:00 pm
I make the point elsewhere that Davies’ record is similar to Hoyte’s. Both have played under-age international football, both have one year’s Premiership experience. One has cost us nothing, the other could cost 10 million. I know which one I would prefer.
