I was surprised to learn how few friendlies we had planned to get us ready for the coming season.
I am aware of the high level of World Cup activity, however only one player made it to the final and one other was part of the final week.
I think it could be a dangerous tact using the CL qualifiers as friendlies. It will be difficult getting players up to speed as we can’t sub 8 players in the game, only 3. I am sure ALL three will be used in both legs; I can assure you that.
OK, so this is the first time in ages we have had to qualify for the CL, since in the past, we’ve either won the league or come second.
The personnel changes have not been that great yet. When you consider that Pires, Bergkamp and Sol have left, Ashley Cole might leave, and Senderos is out for a month, basically half of the first XI will be new(ish).
Friendlies are a way for players to get their match fittness and sharpness back. None of the main starters have played and may only get 45 mins before an important CL qualifier against a team whose league might already be up and running.
Some of the kids who are playing in Austria, despite giving it their all, still won’t break into the first XI this year, not even in the Carling Cup. Why do we need to see them/ play them?
There is also a week between the two games in Austria, what is that about? I am sure we could fit another one in, especially as we have such a large squad out there.
Make no mistake we need to qualify for the CL knock out stages, both for money and prestige.
We could play someone like Osasuna, who are not too bad, and would not have had 18 players at the world cup.
We also want to win the league this year. We need the new team to be defined and to gel together ASAP.
Lastly the sale of Cole and any new signings will mean that the first XI could change even more before the season starts in earnest, and playing around with the back four will mean that we could be exposed.
I would much prefer AW to do all of his buying and selling before the squad comes back for pre-season so everyone knows who they will be playing with.

Two points.
One, the players need to train for the bigger pitch.
Two, not much point in playing friendlies if half the team is out.

There’s enough to worry about with transfers or lack there of. Colegate and if the devil really made him do it! Zidane not reaching god-hood or enlightenment anyway, the price of English players, or more frightening will Moron-ho get a knighthood?
The lads have worked a hard year and from the looks of things there’s only one new player, so they know each other well enough from training. Will do ok.

I think our World Cup players need the REST more than anything. How many consecutive months can you play football without time off? A few weeks a year isn’t enough. Let them rest & relax.
It IS a catch 22, yes…. because we could face tough competition in the CL qualifier. That is life in the big time.
This is precisely why its much better to have a big squad of players. We don’t. Forget about winning the league with our current team. Its not going to happen. We have NOT improved over last years team, and have injuries to more than a few players. Its going to be tough early in the season… and probably tougher than it should be in the CL qualifier.
Wenger doesn’t want to buy players. We always send kids he has touted out on loan about now… and we watch and wait and watch the transfer market. I would imagine AW has a plan, but its maddening to sit and watch nothing occur.
Bringing in one additional player might not even be enough. Rosicky, GREAT. I am happy it occured… but we haven’t improved from last year. There is ZERO evidence that we are better than the 4th place we got. Talent and experience have departed. Depth has departed. Goals from Pires, our 2nd leading scorer EVERY year are gone.
We watch. Some of us worry. Checking the damned news wire for a GLIMMER of hope that some defender will be coming… because the Center of the pitch and central defense lacks deptha and steel and experience.

It’s a bit of a gamble.
As we seem to be playing it, we will play the qualifier with some vets but mostly unproven youngsters. And we might lose because of it, and miss out on the CL and the CL cash.
The alternative is to call the full squad back for training on two weeks rest. Qualifiing would almost definitely be assured. But the likelihood of injuries increase a lot, and the vets that didn’t get hurt would run out of gas in March. Especially in a post WC year, the longer into the season you can ride your youth/reserves/second team, the better off you are at the end of the season. Theoretically.
If there was a winter break in the EPL it would change the calculation a bit, but it’s a moot point.
Bergkamp and Sol gone won’t be such a dent in the team (never thought I’d write that!) because we have played a lot of games over the past two years without them. At Bob’s spot we have a lot of experienced cover. Senderos’s loss is more concerning, and a fully committed Cole would be a boost; but what can we do?
I don’t think finishing the buying earlier would help for the CL qualifiers, if we did buy an impact player they would probably have played in the World Cup and still be be short of fitness. And if we bought someone we hadn’t heard of, that rested over the WC, we wouldn’t view them as increasing our odds of winning the qualifier. Of course there are some rested impact players out there, but relatively few. If we bought new players earlier it would probably help in the early games of the Premiership though.
I would prefer the signings to be earlier as well, but mostly so I could relax more over the summer. On the other hand, I don’t watch Arsenal to slow my heartrate.

It’s a touch balancing act. Need to qualify to the CL and make sure you don’t stress out those who played in the WC. Like the end of last season, when Wenger juggled the side to rest people for the CL matches, we will see the same again. I just hope the other players are good enough to clinch us a CL spot.
By the way, even if we sign a new player before the CL qualifer, will he play in them? I think not. But yes, I do hope players (if any) are signed as soon as possible thereby ensuring that they will be productive quickly.

I think giving the kids a run for the friendlies is not useless.
The point is - we don’t NEED all of them to break into the first team. If ONE kid can show his worth, that will be worthy.
Remember Kolo Toure? It was during those preseason friendly he was signed by Wenger. And it was because those preseason friendly, he had convinced Wenger he could play at central half.
Likewise, Ashley Cole. I can still remember the first ever time i watched him play. It was a preseason friendly against Barcelona. I was immediately impressed by Cole’s aggressiveness and overall performance. I bet Wenger was impressed too. As it was at that same season Cole made his debut for the first team.
Eboue too, was signed by Arsenal, after his impressive performance during the preseason friendly.

Good point about the pitch, but I guess in training in Shenley or in Austria the pitch size will be that of AG.

I’d take a gamble that something like what is bellow is what we’ll have for that first CL qualifier. RvP, Flamini, Hoyte, Walcott, or Aliadiere could all slide in if necessary, and to be honest, I wouldn’t feel that bad with that lineup. Its unfortunate that Phil won’t be ready, but I think we’re ok.

In your book, it is ofcourse impossible for players to improve themselves hey. So all our players are still on the same level as last year hey? The pain and agony and all the losses last year gave them no experience? the long, unconceeding CL run was useless? the 16 players that went to the world cup would have learnt nothing? just look at the difference btw eboue before the ANC in january and after he came back.
yeah we have “not” improved at all.
we have (will lose) four players: Bergy, Campbell, Pires and Cole.
Last season, Bergy and Sol didnt really factor, Cole was injured for like three quarters of the season. Pires though with less games did contribute. OK.
We replaced pires with Rosicky. Pires has always been our second highest scorer…but he is usually above 3rd and 4th place scorers by like 4, 5 goals at most. If RvP, Adebayor, Hleb, Cesc, and Rosicky score just one more goal each, we will make up for him, thank you. We will miss his experience no doubt, but Rosicky isnt exactly a baby without experience.
the following players would be better and more experienced than last season.
RvP, Adebayor, Cesc, Flamini, Hleb, Eboue, Toure, Gilberto, and maybe even Aliadere and Reyes.
If we add one strong CB and Diaby comes back in February we?ll be quite strong.

if we sign a good CB we will be stronger in Aug 2006.
even when diaby comes back he is still going to be backup. Our CM combination is done and settled - it is Fabregas and Gilberto (except wenger uses three in the middle). Rosicky and Hleb can also back up Fabregas easily. Flamini and Song then back up Gilberto.
So whats the point buying another CM if he is going to sit on the bench anyway? and by early next year he will be competing with Flamini, Diaby and Song for a spot on the bench too!

Lehman is out as he get a red card in the CL final.
If Ash Cole plays in the CL qualifier he wont be sold this season.
He is not due to return to training until Next Tuesday so he would have been training for a couple of days before the CL qualifier. Clichy is out so CYgan, Flamini or Traore may play left back.
The midfield does not look too bad and I guess if we play a 4 5 1 Reyes would play LW.

totally agree of the CB point, however I could use your same logic by saying the new guy may be a sub as well when big Phil comes back…
I have been vocal on Owen Hargreave for AFC. I think he could displace Gilberto in midfield for us, he is younger and has a bit more bite.
I am not 100% sure how old Gilberto is but I would say is he approaching 30.

Agreed about the new player now, but if for example Davies was signed in June, he would have travelled to Austria and been part of the squad. He would have had time to gel with Toure and Djourou and the other defenders and know how they all play.
Some of Wengers resting last season did not seem to work too well. Man U away for example.

yeah, i also like hargreaves a lot….but im just trying to be realistic….there is no way wenger is going to boot out gilberto to bring in hargreaves.
i was hoping hargreaves would come in as we could play a 4-3-3. he and gilberto supporting behind fabregas in the middle - the good part is that OH is good shielding as well as going upfront and is passing is good too.
but hargreaves to replace gilberto is just not going to happen.

you dont need to boot out Gilberto, he can still play, but Hargreave would compete with him, the form player would play in the team. There is no competition for Gilberto, it is too easy for him.
Hargreaves would be perfect, away to Bolton, Man U, Blackburn etc.
Do you see a new CB coming in and being first choice or a sub?

In WC year, it difficult to get players by June. Still we managed Rosicky.
I know that Wenger’s rotation doesn’t work well, simply because he doesn’t do it by design. In the fag end of the season, when everyone is tired, he is forced to rest players. If he rotates throughout the season, it will be easier. But then again, one can argue that Arsenal do not have a side to do it all season.
Now, it’s the exact opposite. He is forced to juggle because it’s too early and players are not ready. Once again, it can be argued that we don’t have strength in depth.

How did I know we would get a bastard of team in the champions league qualifying. Dynamo Zagreb. Arghh..sort of team that could does some crazy sh*t at home. If Cygan plays in Zagreb we are screwed.
I wish Wenger would just stump up the cash for Curtis Davies. I’ve seen him a few times and he is a quality player. But no, Wenger would rather be frugal when it comes to a top class defender but is prepared to splash out on an overrated 17 yr old striker who has pace and not much else it seems.
This is an example of why Wenger frustrates me so much.

yes, him coming in to compete is also good….but thats still a lot of bodies….in a 2-man central midfield that will be gilberto, flamini, song and any new person (four in total) for one spot mostly.
do i rate flamini and song? not really, but they are cant be that bad…AW had song for one whooole year and still signed him…so they should be good for backup.
also note that OH is on 45k a week…gilberto is on 40k, flamini on 10k, song i dont know, but im guessing it would be even less.
bearing all these in mind if hargreaves or anybody else comes in then gilberto will probably have to move out….except we use 3 in the middle.
as for CB, i think anyone coming in will be first choice, mainly becos he will have a head start over senderos anyway.

You know it was only just over two years ago that Arsenal went unbeaten. That following pre-season we had so much quality depth it was crazy. Our reserves consisted of the likes of Edu, Reyes, RvP, Quincy, Ali, Fab, Clichy, Bentley, Lupoli, Hoyte, Senderos, and Pennant. That’s not including the likes of Kanu, Parlour, Wiltord, and Keown. That is a lot of class. That’s not even including our starting eleven.
They still needed time to gel but with that talent, not much. I don’t know what Wenger was doing in Austria but it was working. With that reserve team we would have ripped Ajax a new one in the first half on Saturday.
Bottom line is Arsenal don’t have time to play CL qualification matches. That’s very important time for player cohesion. Besides, you never know who you’ll have to play in those matches. Everton got completely stomped by a no-name team from Spain that was good enough to send manure packing at the group stage and advance all the way to the semi’s. We don’t need that kind of pressure.
By the way, does anyone happen to know what happened to all that quality depth we had? It was only two years ago.

Maybe Wenger thinks ?10m for a guy with one years premier league relegation experience is too much and will sign someone for with actual experience instead.
Or maybe he knows that WBA will start to get nervous as the days go by and lower their fee. they won’t be able to sell him for more than ?5m after a year in the championship, unless he scores 10 goals a la Lauren Blanc. Even if we sign Davies, I ‘d be surprised if he started in Zagreb. Let’s not forget Hoyte can play CB, but err, Cygan will probably start.

I would rather we had less players but the ones we had were top quality. Look at our strikerforce, apart from Henry we will just be rotating mediocrity all season. But then Wenger doesn’t have any faith in the other strikers so Henry doesn’t get any rest. Wenger then compounds this problems every season by filling up the striking department with more mediocrity (adebayor) which means we have even more fluff as back up to Henry. Wenger still flogs Henry every week and the rest of the strikers are twiddling their thumbs. I’d rather offload alot of the mediocrity and replace them with one top quality striker who can rotate with Henry.
It’s the same with defence, everyone keeps saying we have Connolly, Cygan, Hoyte as back up to Toure, Senderos, and Djourou. I’d rather sod off Cygan, Connolly, Hoyte, O’Ceurill, and just have Curtis Davies.
Too much filler not enough killer.

well, the reserves grew up and were upgraded. at least most of them.
of that team, only lehmann, toure, gilberto and henry are still first 11 players.
wenger broke up that team becos they lacked the mental toughness to cut it in europe or to really be considered a great team (universally, not just by arsenal fans)
when we were at our lowest low of last season in jan/february, ppl like bergkamp, pires, ljunberg were moaning and complaining…they had basically given up. campbell lost it entirely. henry had the wrong body language.
the kids? they didnt give a f–k about all that…they are mentally tough no question. and we have a CL final appearance to prove this.
i remain optimistic.

Quality not quantity, I pretty much agree with the assessment of defence though whether Daives is better even than Hoyte remains open to question, but attack wise I think we’re ok.
Personally, I think Adebayor has all the tools to be as good as Torres for example. He made an immediate impact and struck up a partnership with Henry (not easy). Fair enough, he didn’t finish too well against Portsmouth, but Torres is hardly the world greatest finisher either. There is one month in age and about ?25m difference.
Van Persie is a highly skilled player with pace, who Van Basten considers better than Kuyt. Last season he was reasonable, but then he did spend summer in prison and broke his toe midway through the season. He still needs to learn about being a team player, but he’s almost there.
Walcott must have some sort of potential.
