In a draw that’s sure to make Rick B happy, Arsenal will be travelling to Eastern Europe, as it’s either Dinamo Zagreb of Croatia, or Ekranas of Lithuania that will be the Gunners’ 3rd Qualifying Round opponents.

Dinamo Zagreb are the more likely of the two, as they currently lead Ekranas 4-1 after their first leg match earlier this week.

Boy! Not the tie to play at the start of the EPL season. The reigning Crotian champions will have German WC defender Nowotny and young Brazilian striker Da Silva in their ranks. Its interesting they have a few Brazilians in their squad. Arsenal will *have* to win at home to have any realistic chance of going thru. Crotian league kicks off this Saturday which means they will have a few competitive games under their belt by the time they face Arsenal. That will not be the case for Arsenal.

The signs are not good. Or it could just be my pessimism going overdrive!

  2. VaVaVoomTiti Says:

Not a bad draw wiith the second leg at highbury, i mean the grove…

  3. VaVaVoomTiti Says:

On a side note, GBP 18 MM for Michael Carrick!?!?

Who wants to buy English now? Are they having a laugh…

  4. faresk82 Says:

Its not a bad tie. … I will take it.
If Arsenal wants to win the CL or the EPL they should be able to feild any 11 to go past Dinamo Zagreb.

Speaking of Micheal Carick 18mil move to Man Utd. Well if English players cost more, then why dont we invest in English players. Bring cheap young players, bring them up and sell them for high price. So if I want to sell Cole, I will not sell him for less than 25 millions pounds ..no kidding !

If every team is making profit out of their english players, we should.

  5. faresk82 Says:

    A. Cole should go for GBP 30 !!!!

  6. Fred Says:

well, yeah, but we are not supposed to be a selling club….if they become big with us, then we should retain them not sell them off.

i however used to do this in championship manager! i buy a lot of free or cheap players without any intention of ever playing them…then sell them off for very neat or sometimes excessive profits.
ah! i miss those days when i had spare time to play games :-)

  7. stag133 Says:

    Just not for Arsenal.

    United sell RVN…
and take the cash and buy Michael Carrick.

United are becoming Britan’s team… in that their CORE players are young and British.
ROONEY, RIO, CARRICK, RICHARDSON… they were looking at DEFOE… add to that Scholes, O’Shea, Neville, Smith, Giggs, Fletcher…

We sent Campbell packing, and are about to sell Cole!
I don’t care one way or another… but it will certainly not sit well with a certain number of Brits who’d like to see some British players in their team.

  8. DannyT Says:

So what are all these English players doing? Nothing. Their hapless showing in the World Cup re-iterates, yet again, that British footballers have no technique, no self control and no intelligence.

The only British player worth having is Rooney, and the next big young British talent Wenger has already snapped up.

It’s a misnoma that the British public necessarily want British players in their team - more to the point, Wenger has shown they’re completely unecessary.

  9. irishgunner Says:

I would like to see you in a room with O’Shea telling him he is British! The man is Irish from Waterford and probably wouldn’t like it too much.

I wouldn’t swap our squad for Utd’s in a million years. Henry is better than Rooney, Toure better than Rio, Fabregas better than Carrick, Eboue better than Neville, Gilberto better than Fletcher, Adebayor better than Smith, Lehmann better than Van der Sar. Scholes and Giggs are declining, just like Freddie. Who is Richardson? A crap player, Clichy far better than him.

The only two things about Utd. that ever worried me were Keane and Van Nistleroy. One drove the team, the other scored the goals. Van is nearly Henry’s equal as a goalscorer. As a complete player, he is miles behind and he is one personality I have no respect for but you do have to acknowledge his goalscoring record.

I will be putting money on Arsenal finishing ahead of Utd., going further in the Champions League and winning more trophies. That applies even if they sign Mascherano and Ibrahimovic and we sign nobody.

  10. irishgunner Says:

Agreed, I am delighted that we didn’t sign Davies or Carrick.

Sign a French-speaking defender who can communicate with Flamini, Clichy, Traore, Senderos, Toure, Djourou and Eboue. Then we could have a coherent team at the back. Did anyone notice that we achieved our best defensive results last season with all French-speakers back there. I remember Toure commenting on it.

  11. irishgunner Says:

An away goal in Zagreb or none conceded and we can take the tie in Ashburton Grove. Not the easiest but not the hardest. If it wasn’t for post-World Cup tiredness, I would see only one result.

  12. stag133 Says:

    IrishGunner…

I could care less if we had ZERO Brits. I am simply saying what MANY Brits on this site often echo. They want British players in their British team. The press went loopy last season when we fielded NO British players in a CL match. There ARE people who would like an English League team to have players in it that represent England or Britain at least.
Yes, Irish is not English … Welsh, N.Irish, Scotland…
Again… me? I don’t care if your green from Mars, and can play footy…
but there ARE folks who want British players in their English team.

With the current team… and the injuries we have… we’ll be battling for 4th again… we aren’t better. There is no proof we will be better by losing talent and experience, and having less depth than even last year.

  13. irishgunner Says:

    Don’t worry, we are better.

At the beginning of last season, Djourou and Eboue hadn’t played for the club. Now they have acquired valuable experience including at the World Cup. Adebayor, Walcott, Diaby and Rosicky have been signed, Hleb has found his feet. Of clubs across the world, only Chelsea matched our 16 players at the World Cup.

We have lost the aging Bergkamp, Pires and Campbell who are all in decline. Cole may go, the most disruptive influence in many a year.

I am more worried about the team getting used to the new stadium than I am about the squad. Other clubs have taken their time to find their feet in new stadia.

  14. Fred Says:

so red nose fergie is now copying DIRECTLY from the wenger book hey….he as said it that rossi will take nistelrooys place - no new strikers!!! LOL !!!
    copy-cat !!!

aha they finally seem to have got carrick…hmm!
cant tackle, doesnt impose himself, can’t keep possession…though can dribble, can make runs and has good passing. mediocrity!

fabregas can hold the ball far better and his passing range blows carrick out of the water. his passing doesnt come close to reyes’ either.

so now they have sold their only 20+ striker and brought in a vastly overated CM who will give them an extra 5,6 assists……and for a loss of about 6 million!

    i’m pleased!

  15. nipuna Says:

    EXACTLY!!!

Carrick has played all of 7 games for England and is not even first choice.

Cole has played 50 times for England, is first choice and considered by many as the best left back in the world.

Why should we settle for anything less???

  16. Andez Says:

The signing of Carrick (with that much money)shows the first sign Ferguson is really starting to feel desperated. Remember not long ago Ferguson once boldly claimed “EVERYBODY WANTS TO PLAY FOR MAN UTD”?

Not anymore. I suppose. Guttoso, Vieira were his primarily target. Now he’s settled for Carrick, while paying such an inflated price.

  17. nipuna Says:

Yes, and it is signings like these and the likes of SWP which really inflate the price of British players. Of course, I really hope we exploit the same when selling Cole for no less than 30M GBP.

I want to know one thing. Is Curtis Davies the only left sided central defender in the world? Why aren’t we looking elsewhere?

  18. stag133 Says:

This is the same player Arsenal has been interested in for years. Now United sign him, and he’s not that good any more? Get the Arsenal glasses off… please.

  19. DannyT Says:

Arsenal got Fabregas for practically nothing while Utd will pay a ludicrous ?15m for Carrick who is about 70% the player Fabregas is, and 50% of what he will be.

    Wenger got it right, again

  20. Andez Says:

Stag, over the years AW has expressed his INTEREST in many players. That included Robbie Fowler, Kevin Phillips, Patrick Kluvert, Carl Cort etc, just a few examples. And none of them being signed even when they were available.

Deep inside, I believe it’s just a smoke screen from AW. As far as I’m concerned, when AW seriously interested in a player, he will GO FOR IT no matter what it takes. Reyes and Walcott are two examples. Does Walcott worth that kind of money? I don’t think so. I don’t think AW thinks so neither. But he wanted him. So he just went for it.

It’s a smart way to do your business too. Say, when u walk into a car shop buying a car, u see one you love, you aren’t going to tell the sell man yes that’s the one i want, i love it right?

Personally, i never believe AW has ever truely interested in signing Carrick.

  21. DannyT Says:

I’m sure Wenger is looking elsewhere, it’s just that he’s not going to declare who he’s looking at.

Maybe he things Cygan is adeaute centre back/left-sided cover, he seems to have stuck with the chump for so long now he must rate him good at something - frightening huh?

  22. DannyT Says:

I don’t think Carrick is Utd’s answer either, I think they’re going backwards, whilst Arsenal is just sitting there.

We’ll be better than last year, but unless the defence gets sorted and we get someone in the center of midfield I don’t think we have a hope in hell of winning anything other than the FA Cup at best.

Chelsea can only throw away the title through their own negligence, chasing the Champions League could throw them. I highly rate Liverpool, I think they could be Chelsea’s main challenger - Bellamy could be a superb signing for them.

  23. Fred Says:

    silly comment….

if wenger was really “interested” in carrick he would have got him 2 years ago when he was available for just 2 million….instead he got flamini and promoted fabregas.
    this says it all!

fabregas’s passing range puts carrick to shame….and carricks’s passing is his main asset … LOL !!!

  24. Fred Says:

and look at the trabelsi case too…..we have been interested in him for how many years now, yet when he was available for free this summer … did we buy him? nah!

    smokescreen.

  25. Fred Says:

we still have a strong chance in the CL. the CL is still very much a cup like the FA.

and now that we have 3 excellent passers in midfield (cesc, hleb and rosicky) and a group that does not have a CL mental block, there is no reason for us not to continue to do well in the CL. and not to forget that we can’t get physically bullied in europe either.

  26. stag133 Says:

This is a classic case of Arsenal glasses.
Someone else signs a players and he immediately, isn’t that good.

I do not care about HOW MUCH they paid for or overpaid for a player. The money is meaningless to me. They have brought in a GOOD player in their midfield, where they were definitely lacking last year.

Now there are reports that they are very close to signing Senna from Valencia. I am sure there will be 5 people on here saying how he sucks or isn’t very good. Well… that would be the midfield help that they needed. That will likely make them better than they were last year in MIDFIELD.

I think RVN is a big loss for them. But I don’t doubt for a second that they are done bringing in players. I think they will get a striker as well.

    We watch.
Yes. Some of you will say that is the genius of Wenger at work. Watching and doing nothing. Going with the kids. OK. Can’t complain about the great run in the CL last year. But the league race was over for us by Thanksgiving.
And… you can slice it any way you want, but we were BAD LASAGNA away from watching this years CL.

I don’t see how we’ve improved at all. We’ve lost depth and experience. We have INJURIES to start with… and many players who haven’t had the typical Summer rest. What happens if say… Thierry Henry pulls a hamstring on opening day and is out for a month?
    We’d be absolutely f&&&ed.

  27. Fred Says:

senna has said he is not interested in coming to Man U…and Fergie has said that rossi is directly RvN’s replacement….he’s going with the kids this year….he has seen he has no choice really, players are not desperate to play for man u anymore.

lost experience? campbell, cole and bergkamp didnt play a significant role for us last year. pires did and we have replaced him with rosicky.man u in the last year have lost keane, RvN and likely ronaldo as well. u can praise our opponents if u wish but man u is not a team we should be envious of.

depth? to play a season we need 20 first team players. if we get a CB we will have no problems with depth.

    NOW FOR YOUR FINAL STATEMENT:

“What happens if say… Thierry Henry pulls a hamstring on opening day and is out for a month?
    We’d be absolutely f&&&ed.”

this is definitely the most ——- thing i have heard today….

what happens if rooney or gerrard pulls an hamstring? why dont you ask that question too?

  28. Fred Says:

  29. Fred Says:

i’m getting tired with a lot of moaning around here…..like someone said in one of the earlier topics, a lot of people are just transfer-addicts - signings is like a drug to them, they need a regular fix. LOL!!

but to be fair, its not just arsenal fans …. yesterday i was looking at the bbc boards and there was this man u fan who said that if fergie didnt buy at least 5 new fans he won’t renew his season ticket …… such an idiot.

  30. stag133 Says:

When was the last time we beat ManU?
Did they finish behind us or ahead of us last year?

you discount our opponents… and teams that finished AHEAD of us last season by more than a few points…
    I do not.
I have a healthy respect for United. They beat us head to head every year… Chelsea own us in the last few years… and these are the teams we are chasing.

Gerrard didn’t play in every match last season… Liverpool have more than enough midfielders, probably too many.

I do NOT think United are done buying. They’ll bring in another striker.

    Senna… not interested?

Fred, if you don’t like the “moaning”… you don’t have to reply or respond.

You can contribute whatever you want. You can choose to respond to posts, disregard them, or ignore them.

Sorry if you see is winning the league by 20 points, and taking the treble… I don’t.

  32. joshuad Says:

Yeah, 18 million Thai Baht. There’s no f*cking way United paid that much for him, not in GBP. If they did they’re the assclowns of the century.

What are you drunk or something. That’s the only way to see it. If a player signs with someone other than Arsenal, that in and of it self is proof that their no good. ;)~ There’s no other way.

You know there are also those who complain about Asrene not doing anything and then he takes the team to the CL Championship match in Paris.

    BAD LASAGNA - interesting metaphor?

    BAD APPETIZERS
Arsenal was also plagued with injuries last year, which you acknowledge.

    MEDIOCRE MAIN COURSE
We finished fourth by piping Sp*rs on the last day - talk about excitement.

  34. Fred Says:

in the last 3 years Man U have been ahead of us how many times? ONCE! how many times have we beaten bolton in the last 5 years? does that make bolton better than us? stop talking bullshit. every team has boogey teams.

chelsea “own” us????? in the last 10 league games they have beaten us 2 times….yes they “own” us……

    stag logic.

  35. RedCurrant Says:

What are all these English players doing? Well, let’s see. . .Terry, Lampard, Cole (J), Bridge et al are winning Premiership titles, Gerrard, Carragher etc. are recent European Champions, Ferdinand, Rooney, Scholes, Giggs & Co finished well ahead of us in the title chase and even Carrick, Defoe and Lennon came within (heaven forbid) a dodgy stomach of pipping us to the last Champions League spot.

You can’t argue that British footballers have ‘no technique, no self control and no intelligence’. By this warped logic, you could say the Argentineans and Dutch lack the same qualities, as they too were eliminated at the quarter final stage in Germany. And what of the Ivory Coast, with Toure and Eboue? They must be rubbish - they didn’t even get beyond the group stage!

It isn’t a ‘misnomer’ that the British public (whoever they are) want homegrown players in their teams. They probably want a balance. The majority of fans - the ones who actually go to the games week in week out - would support Arsenal if they fielded 11 Martians, but I bet if you asked them, they’d say they’d prefer to see more homegrown players in the squad. So it does matter. And it’s certainly not ‘completely unnecessary’!

  36. Fred Says:

well, i make it a point of duty to respond to you…u are a special case man. the only times you post here are when u want to state how vieira is a god and how everybody is buying and we are f==ked.

others at least talk about a wide range of things and are not permanent moaners.

thoughts? what thoughts do YOU ever share here? u only talk abt vieira and our doom. and when one wants to have an argument with u, u don’t respond to the points the person makes … u just state what u always say regardless of what was said.

win the league by 20 points??? i’m sorry, that is what YOU want…. for me the little things make me happy, the small steps, the youth growing up and exploding, the careful and meticulate building of the team…
while for you…becos we ddint make BIG signings or sign ballack and shevschenko we are “doomed”….

wenger USES his BRAIN and because of that i trust him.

  37. stag133 Says:

    Very well stated.

  38. stag133 Says:

Last 2 years we have beaten Chelsea???
    Oh… we haven’t.
    They have beaten us silly.
Last 2 years in the league… Chelsea have been how many points ahead of us???

You can think that Ballack and Schevy are not IMPROVING an already dominant team, but its factual that its made them even stronger.

  39. stag133 Says:

If you don’t like what I have to say.
    Don’t respond.

but i reserve my right to “attack” you for saying silly things.

ManU still has a proven goal scorer in Saha, if Rooney goes down– Saha has even played well up front alone, for Fulham; when Smith returns (not sure of his return date), he is also a proven goal scorer in the EPL… Arsenal has no one to match that level of proficiency, if Henry goes down… Gooners better hope that Rosicky is capable of giving us the goals that Pires took with him– otherwise, it is going to be Henry and a bunch of (goal-scoring) midgets this season, unless RVP finally realizes his potential.
Liverpool has enough (Spaniards) to make do, if Gerrard goes down, though obviously they’d be weakened by losing him… Chelsea obviously doesn’t have an indispensable player, and if they did, they’d just go out and buy the best available replacement in the world, hang the cost… Tottenham doesn’t have anyone good enough to be indispensable, as they have no one in Henry (or Rooney, or Gerrard, or Terry, or Makelele, or Drogba)’s class. We are definitely up Sh*t creek without a paddle, if Henry goes down, like he did last year.

P.S.– And I wouldn’t count on getting such an easy group in the CL this year, with Arsenal first having to play its way into the main draw– I don’t think we’ll be seeded as highly this year, if/when we get there.

    @ gunned down:

well saha is a good striker but he is VERY injury prone. that aside he cant lick the goal scoring boots of either henry or RvN.

losing henry will be a massive blow, but wont be the end of arsenal. we will still create tons of chances and play “wenger-ball”….only we wont have someone who can convert regularly.

on the other hand rooney and gerrard loss would seriously compromise the way liverpool and man u play which is a more serious problem for them….

but in the end why is there talk about henry or anybody at all getting injured…whats the point of this discussion actually?

  50. gerard Says:

Maybe now that RVP gets more play time his numbers will go up, he’s definetly a good playa.

  51. gerard Says:

It just dawned on me how much better it is to be a Gunner than a Chel$keite for example. What are they talking about on their fan forums this time of year ? it?s probably more like playing eenie-meenie-mineie-moe who will the ?Special MorONE-ho? choose to go, I like blue he likes green so buy both? We at least can sit here and dream and banter back and forth on how Les Boss (no not lesbos) will improve the side.
I?d want to be a Gooner even if I wasn?t one already as we still have the spice of life as fans of this club.

Personally, I couldn’t care less if we had zero English players - I just don’t think they’re required.

If it’s loyalty you’re after think of one name - Ashley Cole!

Wenger has tried out loads of young English kids like Bentley, Upson and Pennant - but none of them have been up to the required standard.

If it’s technique and natural talent you’re after then it’s really at a premium in this country and always has been. On top of that, they’re ridiculously overpriced.

  53. Andez Says:

Stag, I don’t recall too many ppl here really RATED Carrick even before he joined Man Utd. I know I didn’t.

Now he’s not such an awful players to be fair to him. I think the points folks been trying to come across here is he DOES NOT WORTH 15 million GBP. No body been saying he’s rubbish.

Let’s face it: HAD it be Arsenal spent 15 million on a player like Michael Carrick, I think I would be the one who start to really worry AW may start to lose his plot. And it doesn’t matter what kind of glasses I wear. Hell, I don’t even wear glasses anyway!

  54. gunner4life Says:

Reason why Wenger did not sign Carrick 2 seasons ago was bcos Vieira decided not to move to the continent then. Otherwise Wenger would have signed him. Now that Carrick’s stock has risen, Wenger is not prepared to spend that sort of money though I am sure he would not mind having Carrick. Between Cesc and Carrick, they are both good players in their own right. IMO Cesc is a better attacking midfielder while Carrick is stronger in the tackle and in the air. Much as I appreciate what Flamini has done for Arsenal last season, I would still place Carrick ahead of Flamini in the midfield position.

  55. gunner4life Says:

Jury is still out on Walcott but for Reyes, I would consider him an average signing especially for the 17m quid Arsenal will pay for him. Duff at 5m pound is comparatively a bargain and I am surprised Wenger has been so patient with Reyes all this while.

  56. DannyT Says:

It would be nice, but I can’t help feeling last season was a one-off in the Champions League.

I still have to question Wenger’s tactics in Europe, he never planned to get to the final playing 4-5-1 with Flamini, Eboue and Senderos at the back - in fact he would have though you were a maniac had you suggested this was a possible route to the final back in August.

But it’s been great for the players’ confidence no doubt, they know they have nothing to fear, whereas in the past the final just seemed untouchable.

Mentally it’s very positive - but can Wenger get the tactics right? Even against Villarreal he played 4-5-1 completely unnecessarily and we nearly paid for it.

The defence needs sorting badly, if Cole goes and is just replaced by Flamini then we’re f*cked. Heaven forbid if Toure got a bad injury in August, we might have a back four of Eboue, Connolly, Cygan and Flamini - what an absurd situation! With Senderos crocked for 2 months and Djourou and Clichy out (neither of which are necessarily up to the job anyway), by the end of September Arsenal could be out of everything!

  57. DannyT Says:

You’ll be attacking him all season then.

  58. DannyT Says:

I think the point is that some teams are better able to cope with injuries than others. All teams will get injuries, so one can;’t help but wonder how Arsenal would cope if Henry or Toure is out for a month.

If Henry is out then I think we have the attacking players to win games for a short period, but we’ll need a pretty solid defence for that, and it doesn’t look solid to me minus Cole and Campbell.

Heaven forbid if Toure gets injured, most clubs have decent options as back up - Arsenal don’t, so it’s a worry.

  59. RedCurrant Says:

I think you hit the nail on the head. . .the pricing is they key. ?7m for Rosicky versus the ?10m reportedly asked for Curtis Davies tells its own story.

But it’s not fair to suggest (?) Cole’s lack of loyalty is due to him being English. . .what about Adams, Merson, Bould, Parlour, Winterburn, Dixon, Keown, Wright, Seaman and co? They loved the club and - as far as I know - only left on retirement or when their services were no longer required (the other side of loyalty!).

As you mention some of the English youngsters, tell me honestly - would have Upson back instead of Cygan? If Pennant is that bad a player, would Liverpool really splurge over ?6m for him? Wenger has rejected several non-British youngsters too. Standard of play has nothing to do with where you’re born.

What perplexes me about Ashley Cole is that not only is he a product of the Arsenal academy, he’s also an Arsenal fan! I’m as baffled as you are by what’s going on in his head.
