I’m not going to go into paragraphs of reasons why I think these solutions work, I’ll simply state what I think are two very good options.
Option #1. Take Jonathan Woodgate on loan from Real Madrid for a season.
If he stays injury free he is an excellent player and would become a huge asset for the Gunners. He would be a natural fit with Toure and would allow Toure the freedom to become a more attacking C.B.
Option #2. Bolton’s Tunisian C.B Jaidi is 30 now and looking to move out of the Reebok.
A 1 - 2 year deal at Arsenal would give the Gunners a better cover option than Cygan when either Toure or Senderos are out of the side.
I believe either one of these players would work out well,, with my first choice being of course “Woody”.

i dont really like jaidi much……..but i like the Woodgate idea….
i rate him…and he is english too….
HOWEVER….he is waaaaaaaaay too injury-prone…
the only way we should consider him is if he is ready to accept a very strict one-year PAY-AS-YOU-PLAY contract.
if we’re happy after the one year, we’ll then offer him a normal 5 year contract.
if he succeeds, he becomes first choice alongside toure…with senderos and djorou as backup….if not senderos is first choice and we can still swoop for davies next summer or in january if we wished.
but woodie is on a 80 k per week……so i dont think he’ll like a pay-as-you play contract really.
July 30th, 2006 at 1:33 pm
1. Forget ?60k a week, plague ridden Woodgate, we should sign Ayala or someone of similar age, type & experience on a 2year contract. Basically, someone who won’t cost much, who wouldn’t block the development of either Senderos or Djourou & who has enough quality to comfortably play either left centre or right centre when called upon.
2. Jaidi’s a leftback & I don’t see the point in signing him up either even if Cole does go. We have Clichy, Hoyte, Flamini, Cygan & Traore who can all play there.
July 30th, 2006 at 1:36 pm
oh yeah, the loan option - didnt see that…well, if real agree to pay his wages while on loan, it wont’ be bad hey?
reyes says he doesnt want to go…..but i think the truth is he does….
so i say reyes to madrid for 10 million PLUS baptista PLUS woodgate on season long loan (with madrid footing his wages - and us bagging him for a nominal fee next summer if we are satisfied).
unlikely though.
July 30th, 2006 at 1:39 pm
ayala is 33…..its not happening…
i agree with u on jaidi though…i dont’ think we need a new LB even if cole goes….
CB and CM … thats what we need
July 30th, 2006 at 2:23 pm
I’m pretty sure Jaidi is a centre-back, or at least he is for Bolton. Apparently, despite a good start, he’s not very highly rated there now.
July 30th, 2006 at 2:26 pm
Woodgate is one of the most injury prone high-profile players in world football at the moment. Forget about him - that’s just desperate talk.
Baptista has looked shite for Real Madrid, although he did improve towards the end of last season. Why buy a player who has publicly turned Arsenal down once already? I very much doubt he wants to play for us and I doubt he’s good enough either.
July 30th, 2006 at 2:38 pm
I like your Loan idea NBG, but not Woodgate.
I don’t doubt Woodgate’s talent, unfortunately he’s the new Darren Anderton. While Anderton at least always recovered in time for every England’s major tournament finals, Woodgate seems like forever earning his pay cheque in the physio room.
Newcastle signed him knowing that he had an injury record (even back with when he’s with Leeds) was dumb, Real Madrid was even dumber knowing that he hardly even played for Newcastle. A talented central half sitting in the physio room ain’t going to solve our problem.
July 30th, 2006 at 2:47 pm
Fred, i kinda feel the same way as u - i too feel Reyes maybe really wants to leave, regardless of what he said to the press.
Personally i think it may be a win-win situation for both Reyes and Arsenal. Reyes has his talent, yet it appears to me he would never cut it in the Premiership. He lack of the physical strength and intelligence to be successful in the Premiership. Besides, i had a feeling he don’t really get along well with Henry, at least on the pitch.
Arsenal can do without Reyes as we have had enough of attacking players. But i agree with Danny, I don’t want the Breast neither. If we gonna sell Reyes to Real Madrid, let’s just grab the cash. The Breast had publicly claimed that he’s not interested in joining Arsenal. if we r going to buy a player, we need a player who has the right mindset. Besides, the Breast never really done anything with Real Madrid nor Brazil. Luckily we didin’t buy him last season.
Surely enough he got the physical size, but personally i think a player’s HEART is even more important. Take Flamini, he’s small, but he always run hard. That to me is more important than someone who’s tall and big, yet may not willing to work for the team’s clause.
July 30th, 2006 at 3:03 pm
The Breast?
Who’s that? Pamela Anderson?
I’ll take 2 “breasts”!
;0
Don’t want see players of talent going for cash. We won’t spend the cash on players.
July 30th, 2006 at 3:13 pm
and NOW…
the Yankees have just picked up Abreu and Lidle from the Phillies.
What are Theo and the Sox doing?? NOTHING?!!!
We have to improve the team before the trading deadline!!
ummmmm …. OOOOOOOOOPS.
Wrong forum, Wrong sport…
but it IS the same story!
My team(s) standing pat… while others get better!
July 30th, 2006 at 6:20 pm
A loan signing is a good idea, won’t block the youngsters but……
Option 1 - Woodgate is too injury-prone
Option 2 - Jaidi is apparently in talks to go to Birmingham, hardly on the up.
Are there any Italian centre-backs out there looking for a short-term move out of the mess of Serie A?
July 30th, 2006 at 7:10 pm
Woodgate’s injury problems do not seem to want to go away. How many games have he played for RM since he joined them? With Arsenal’s weak bench, we cannot afford a player who is probably going to miss 50% of the games. Jaidi could be a good stop-gap measure. He is a seasoned international but would also be missing when the Africa cup comes around. He is certainly a very strong player in the air and had popped in a few goals for Bolton. But by the looks of things, I will not be surprised if Wenger keeps the chequebook and rely on Cygan as a backup. We might need to be contented with fighting for 4th spot in the EPL again.
July 30th, 2006 at 7:16 pm
I say take the money from RM for Reyes and look elsewhere. Baptisita has turned down Arsenal once so I am not sure if he will be interested to play in England. He might run into the same problem as Reyes in adapting to life in England. Too bad Arsenal missed out on German international Nowotny who signed for Zagreb. Since Cole is going to Chel$ki, why not get get cash and either Gallas or Huth in return?
July 30th, 2006 at 7:52 pm
Woodgate is England quality, surely he’s due an injury free season! If Real get Reyes make them pay half or more of Woodys wage.
Jaidi is a C.B! and very dominant in the air at free kicks and corners. Would you choose playing every game for Brum with no medal chances, or Arsenal as a back up with a chance to play in the Champions League? Your careers winding down, no brainer!
July 30th, 2006 at 7:59 pm
If you have enough money to pay a good player to sit, you can make these kinds of moves.
Where are the experienced players who are a) affordable, b) willing to move to England, c) willing to play second fiddle in a constricted role, and d) good enough to be anything but a warm body in rotation.
Wenger is living and dying by his youth policy in reaction to Chelsea’s buying power. It got us to the CL final, and had the vets stepped up a little more last season, and had we not suffered so many injuries that screwed with a more consistent team choice, the gamble would have been better received.
Except by you, of course.
July 30th, 2006 at 8:28 pm
To put it straight….Jaidi is 29, he’ll be 30 next month. He’s 6′ 4″ and 14 stone (196 lb’s) and plays in the center of the defence.
July 30th, 2006 at 9:05 pm
Yeah, I blame the vets too!
They were terrible.
It wasn’t the weak link youth that SUCKED for large portions of the season, getting bossed all over the pitch. It was the VETS!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lehman, Henry, Lauren (pre-injury), & Kolo CARRIED THE DAMNED TEAM.
But hey… lets go with what we have. I enjoyed being out of the league race in November. Takes the pressure off!!!
I mean, wasn’t fun playing on the last day of the season and needing Totteringham to have problems digesting their lasagna, in order for us to even qualify for the CL??!!
Yaaaaaaaaaaaay that was great.
NOT.
Make a f’n move. Get the player or 2 we need. Enough of this bullshite… its ridiculous.
July 31st, 2006 at 12:54 am
Woodgate? AYFKM? No way. He reminds me of Mr. Glass in Unbreakable. Horrible decision. Jaidi’s a big boy who can throw down in the back and has got a thumping header. But if he’s not good enough for Bolton is he good enough for Arsenal? Why are they letting him go?
If we bring in a CB they need to be good enough to start. If not Wenger will go with Cygan and rightfully so. I know many don’t like him but Arsenal kept a bunch of clean sheets with Cygan on the field last season. That’s a fact! He’s proven to be a very dependable backup at both CB and LB. Wenger’s not looking for cover, he’s looking for a starter. If he doesn’t find one, Cygan’s going nowhere.
July 31st, 2006 at 12:57 am
He’s a CB for Tunisia too. I don’t know where this LB business comes from or atleast I’ve never seen him there.
July 31st, 2006 at 1:17 am
Andez, bottom line is Wenger was foolish to believe Baptista would choose Arsenal when the kid had already announced his goal to get a Spanish passport. That was before Real Madrid even came in for him. After they made a bid it was too easy for him to stay in Spain. As soon as Madrid announced an intrest Wenger should have tried to bring in Appiah before he left Juventus, or atleast someone else.
You can’t be mad at Baptista for snubbing Arsenal as he had publicly announced his short term agenda that included him staying in Spain. Wenger said we were unlucky not to get him; bullshit! We were STUPID not to get someone else. We were UNLUCKY against Chelsea in the CL. You can’t control luck but you can control being stupid.
July 31st, 2006 at 1:25 am
I agree that Wenger is looking for CB who can start. We have backup in the form of Cygan, Hoyte and Djourou.
About Reyes, I definitely agree that we should sell him. No matter how many denials he issues, it is clear that he pines for a move. Despite 2.5 years, he has not settled in England, neither on the field nor culturally off it. I know it’s not easy, but if you don’t make it in 2.5 years, maybe you never will.
July 31st, 2006 at 2:15 am
It doesn’t have to be Ayala specifically, I was thinking more in terms of getting a short-term option in who at the age of around 30-32 might offer the same experience as the departed Sol but without the high maintenance factor. I picked Ayala because he just strikes me as being the embodiement of a supremely focused & highly professional defender, someone you would be sure you could rely on even if he were only occasionally playing.
July 31st, 2006 at 3:05 am
Woodgate is way to injury prone. with our current setting, we definately need a CB and LB. Do you think real madrid or barcelona would ever field flamini, hoyte or traore at LB? and cygan at CB? i don’t think so. if we wanna win the champions league, wenger must use his cash to buy back ups to clichy and senderos. what you guys think of lucas neill from blackburn? he can play CB, RB and LB. he would cost around 5 mill after his excellent world cup.
LB: Clichy, ? , Traore
CB: Senderos, ? , Cygan
CB: Toure, Djourou, Hoyte
RB: Eboue, Lauren
July 31st, 2006 at 4:38 am
lauren?? carried the team when?……we were still in our downturn before he got injured.
ofcourse u will conveniently forget flamini, senderos, eboue, fabregas and hleb. they arent veterans u know.
eboues raw pace and the incisive and decisive passing and movement of fabregas and hleb was what took us to the CL final. the strong will of senderos and flamini helped make a CL DEFENSIVE RECORD.
the only vets worth mentioning are lehmann, toure and henry…..the rest were rather insignificant.
July 31st, 2006 at 6:36 am
I also think that selling Cole to Real Madrid for 16M is better than to Chelsea for 25M.
July 31st, 2006 at 8:34 am
Is Neill the guy that went to ground in the box and fouled the Italian guy in the 93rd minute and essentially ended the World Cup for Australia? If so, we already have a bunch of kids to make dumb decisions. We don’t need an older guy showing our younger ones how to lose a big game. Yes, I do blame him for that loss. To go to ground was a horrible decision.
July 31st, 2006 at 8:59 am
How easily we forget. Lauren was a pillar for us last year. Eboue just made sure we didn’t miss him. For most of the season last year it was between Lehmann and Lauren as to who was Arsenal’s best player. He play very good footie for the Gunners last term. Both of those guys judgement on the field improved their games significantly last season.
He was the one outfield vet that showed the young gunners how to play like an Invincible by his example. Not Pires. Not Campbell. Not Ljunberg. Even Henry lacked Lauren’s consistency. Kolo also had a few bad moments.
No one has forgotten what the others have done but when it came to consistency, and playing well enough to win every game Lauren and Lehmann were best by a mile.
July 31st, 2006 at 9:15 am
Me, too. I want him stuck on the same team with RvN and far away from his posse of London chavs.
But he’ll be able to hang out with his boyfriend Beckham, so at least he’s got that.
For me, the most hated ex-Arsenal player ever. I just hope I don’t speak too soon.
July 31st, 2006 at 9:55 am
As the story goes…
Ash apparently WAS at the Arsenal training TODAY. He LEFT in a RUSH… leading to speculation that his transfer OCCURED TODAY.
Where to? Chelsea or Real Madrid… no report yet.
Let’s hope its Madrid…
and…
Let’s hope we feckin’ actually spend some of the money on a replacment.
July 31st, 2006 at 9:57 am
By the way…
that info is not from Stag-International…
its from SKY SPORTS
July 31st, 2006 at 10:41 am
As much as I would like to see Cole not go to Chelsea, if they are offering ?9-14m more than Madrid then we should take the money. If we sell him to Madrid for ?16m, it’s unlikely we can include a clause prohibiting his resale to Chelsea one year later, even less likely that we can convince Madrid that having paid a world record fee for a left back, they should also pay 25% of any future trasfer fee to Arsenal. Besides Real Madrid are hardly whiter than white themselves, even compared to Chelsea, so why the funk should we do them a favour? Sure if they want offer a player exchange of Robihno for Cole, then why not, otherwise we should take the cash.
We might be making Chelsea stronger, but we’ll be able to strengthen ourselves as well. Not every player who moves is a success at his new club, just ask SWP or Seba Veron.
July 31st, 2006 at 10:51 am
Yes, let’s announce our intent to buy so that all the players that would fit neatly into our slots line up for our inspection.
Just because you have money, doesn’t mean there’s a player there to spend it on.
July 31st, 2006 at 10:59 am
Any player is for sale at the right price.
July 31st, 2006 at 11:01 am
spot on
July 31st, 2006 at 11:29 am
Yeah, lets sell Henry too… to Chelsea, and make them even better.
9-14 Million extra to CHELSEA, is NOT WORTH THE EXTRA MONEY.
Seeing we don’t spend it anyway… it would be even more foolish.
July 31st, 2006 at 11:30 am
What?!!!!!
Now there aren’t any good players out there to buy? Are you having a laugh or what?
July 31st, 2006 at 11:43 am
I am a season ticketed londoner and I will be in San Francisco over the first leg of the champions league game v Zagreb. Does anyone know anywhere I can catch the game? I am desperate not to miss it!
Thanks
July 31st, 2006 at 11:54 am
Didn’t say that, dude. I’m saying you can’t just go out and buy players that everyone wants. They have to want to come, be the right price, adjust to the Premiership, etc.
I’m weary of the cries for Wenger to buy, buy, buy but no one knows exactly who and that’s not a surprise. Negotiations are kept on the DL for obvious reasons. Also, we’re not a collectors club. Arsenal is very much a system club, and that requires players that can play in very distinct roles. Wenger could do with some utility squad players, but then you might as well let the kids come up because it’ll probably take as much time for them to settle as it would a kid to reach an acceptable level of play.
Chalfie - not always true. If you’re willing to dump a ridiculous amount on them to do what they’re told, maybe. But taking into account experienced foreign players, very few will come back to the Premiership because it could likely decrease their valuation.
Expect more potential, around 22 or 23. But Wenger could surprise.
July 31st, 2006 at 12:24 pm
of course, Cole actually wants to go, so unless we intend to enforce his contract against his will why don’t we just sell him to Barcelona for ?2m because they are not Chelsea?
There is one month until the transfer window closes.
July 31st, 2006 at 12:55 pm
BUY BUY BUY…
Go Wenger Go… buy buy buy!!!
Go Theo Go…
Get Roger Clemens… trade trade trade…
Make a MOVE!
Someone Make a MOOOOOOOOOVE
Plllllllllllllllllleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease!
July 31st, 2006 at 1:03 pm
off topic…
Have any of you figured out how to use Arsenal TV Online with a Mac? It looks like it should work in Firefox, but I can’t get it to engage. It just says “connecting media” and “locating media” and then nothing happens…
Thanks
July 31st, 2006 at 1:39 pm
Looks we’ve taken one of Ghana’s world cup starters on trial - Shilla Illiasu, and he’s 23. I don’t remember him specifically from the world cup, but he started in central defence for their last three games. Hope he turns out as well as Kolo!
July 31st, 2006 at 1:44 pm
Yippppppppppppppeeeeeeeeeeee.
The Classic Arsene Wenger move today.
He signed a no-name nobody has mentioned or heard of on trial.
From Ghana’s WC team… defender SHILLA ILLIASU.
is this a farce?
Last name: ILL I, AS U?
Yeah, I IS ILL… AS U?
July 31st, 2006 at 1:57 pm
And who had heard of Kolo Toure, who by the way came to the club as a midfielder and is now one of the top 5 CB’s in the prem, before he came to Arsenal? Shilla played in 4 World Cup games, and he put Sam Kuffor on the bench, so he can’t be that bad.
This is the way Wenger works. He always has, and he always will.
July 31st, 2006 at 2:02 pm
Exactly. Stag is more interested in hosting a variety show, or producing a circus of the stars sporting event.
“Hey, look! Its David Beckham in the dunk tank!”
23 yr. old international right where we need one.
July 31st, 2006 at 2:04 pm
And what did I say: 23 yr. old potential.
July 31st, 2006 at 2:06 pm
Oh yes.
This is a bloody brilliant signing…
an unknown on trial.
Just the ticket!
Ashley Cole out… a nobody in.
PLUS 25 million GBP for the pockets of our board.
Sorry. Not quite the signing I am looking for… and I don’t think this is the ONE or TWO big signings Wenger promised … and that I am sure Thierry Henry expects…
I am sure there are few of you that will be running down the street screaming with glee…… ILLA ILLA ILLA…
July 31st, 2006 at 2:10 pm
Anybody remember this guy Illiasu from the cup? I don’t remember him. A classic Wenger move…no doubt.
I know we all pine for a proven defender to be bought and be wearing “Fly Emirates” but it is not going to happen.
Looks like we may be bargaining for Julio Baptista or Robinho in exchange for Reyes.
As for Cole, I am happy to see him leave…
July 31st, 2006 at 2:11 pm
NO NAME NOBODY huh Stag?
Did you HEAR about the following NAMES - Patrick Vieira, Nicolas Anelka, Emmanuel Petit, Freddie Ljungberg, Cesc Fabregas, Kolo Toure, Emmanuel Eboue, Philippe Senderos, Gael Clichy……………………………………………………..BEFORE they joined Arsenal???
I DIDN’T.
July 31st, 2006 at 2:14 pm
How many of those players stepped onto the pitch and were ready to play.
Do you think they had some sort of transition period.
We don’t have TIME to f*** around with this shite. If Ash goes, we need IMMEDIATE IMPACT PLAYER.
Not someone that could be good or great in 2 years.
Can we talk about NOW. Not 2008.
How much did we pay for Theo? He can’t even get 10 minutes against a Div.3 team in Austria.
TODAY. What about NOW. Not 2009.
July 31st, 2006 at 2:18 pm
Wenger does not buy into the glactico player transfer system. He has been buying players like this THE WHOLE TIME he has been at Arsenal. Vieria, Reyes, Kelb, Toure, Eboue, Van P, Gilberto, had you heard of any of them before they were signed? Oh I forgot that your scouting network spans the globe further than Arsenals.
Lets see, Arsenal need a CB, this guy is 23, a full international, who started the knock out round of the most recent world cup, and if reports are true, would cost about 1 million pounds. He is not going to start, he is a back-up, as evidence by the fact that Kolo and Senderos are the new numbers 5, and 6, so he will be happy just to be playing for Arsenal making more money than he did in Ghana.
Yeah real bad bussines, That Wenger has no idea what he is doing
July 31st, 2006 at 2:19 pm
by thoughts excatly, see my post above
July 31st, 2006 at 2:37 pm
Never said he had no idea.
We need an impact player. Not a player for 2008… who will / could take much time to adjust.
ROSICKY. This is the type of buy I am talking about. He is talented. He is proven at the top level of football.
I don’t want / need us to sign FIGO… or some 30 something player… but for FS… out with Cole and in with ILLIASU… is not working. Sorry.
There is no evidence to suggest this TRIAL player can come in and play at the top level of English football.
IF THERE WAS, WHY IS HE ON TRIAL?
July 31st, 2006 at 6:04 pm
Any player from another league will take time to adjust. Hleb took time, so did Henry and plenty of others, so that argument doesn’t really fly. Also, this kid Wenger is looking at has played in a World Cup. The level of competition doesn’t get any more intense than that.
August 1st, 2006 at 12:25 am
Reyes and Cole to Real for Robinho, 15 mill and Woody on loan!
August 1st, 2006 at 4:57 am
we haven’t signed him, he is coming on loan.
The price will be around 500k if we take him, same level as Senderos.
I think AW has probably done it again, and saved us 9.5 mill.
Would be nice now to sign Buffon and a strong DM.
August 1st, 2006 at 5:12 am
Arsne had Toure on trial before he bought him, Eboue and a couple of others.
He even wanted Ibrahimovich of Juve on trial but did not take him,
That is the old skool. The way that AW works. He has seen Rosicky in Europe and knew he could play, but as this is a key signing he wants yo make sure he gels.
I personally think if we do buy him, we which have not done yet, he will be a good buy and if Cole goes we could get another couple of players in. Hargreaves and Buffon would make me happy and I guess they would be impact players.
August 1st, 2006 at 5:16 am
on their tour to the states. Thought some of you yanks would have picked up on this.
So Chelski will make a statement today.
Come on Arsenal, play hard ball and do a swap for Ashley and Gallas plus cash.
Gallas, whilst a great player, has only one year left on his deal so he cant be worth more than 5 mill, so 20 mill cash plus Gallas is a great deal for both clubs.
August 1st, 2006 at 6:02 am
Just to let you all know this guy is 5 foot 10.
So him and Toure as a partnership are both under 6 foot.
With Eboue and Clichy being small, we will probably have the smallest back four in the league.
Some U16 teams will have a taller back four.
We cant play with these player against Bolton and Blackburn as they will tear us apart on set pieces.
Senderos is 6 foot 2, Campbell was as well, so this is the type of player we are looking for.
August 1st, 2006 at 6:09 am
like Schevcehenko and Ballack…
August 1st, 2006 at 6:12 am
Lucas Neil, not bad, but forget Cygan is he old slow and average, and those are his good points.
If you want a utility defender, Hoyte is your man.
Also, Traore has played perhaps 80 mins of first team football and people want him to play all of the time. Even if he does break through, he wont be able to play more than 50% of the games.
August 1st, 2006 at 9:19 am
Stag, buddy, even if there was the right “impact player” you’re talking about, there’s no telling if he could make a difference in the side straightaway any more than a 23 yr. old trialist. Wenger knows what he needs and has proven it time and time again.
This isn’t the 80’s where The Arsenal was structured in such a way that a big striker or playmaker came in and lifted the side. This is 2006 and even though other teams still operate that way, Arsenal operate much differently. Its system-based that relies on young legs and open slates to gel in a specific way. For example, Thuram sounds like he’d be good for the side if he was willing to play second fiddle. But Wenger obviously thinks that the kids will learn enough from their current training, and there’s probably a ton of minutiae that also informs that decision . How could someone argue with the guy at this point???
Reyes was the right player, or so we thought and so he proved early on when things were still warmish, so Wenger splashed. He’s not going to carry a wage packet for someone who’s just along for the ride.
Every player has a transition period, even supposedly world beaters from abroad who have already adjusted to a slower style of play. Wenger chooses to put his time into his youth scouts and in both the short and long term it pays off. If we stay healthy, you’ll see.
August 1st, 2006 at 1:36 pm
I doubt Gallas is interested in Arsenal, he wants to go abroad. Why swap Chelsea for Arsenal? It’s not like he’s always on the bench at Chelsea.
August 1st, 2006 at 1:57 pm
So, Gallas doesn’t make the trip to the US for the Chelski tour. Could he be a makeweight in the immenent departure of Cole?
August 2nd, 2006 at 4:53 am
Why swap Chelsea for Arsenal.
1/ He will start every game at CB.
2/ He will be working under a French coach
3/ He will be with Henry
4/ He wont have to move his family
5/ He will get paid better.
