I haven’t been posting regularly as my schedule has been crazy. How crazy? Well, so far this year I’ve been to England (March), Germany (April) Monaco (May), Germany (June/July) and England/Hungary (July/August). I’ve been to see Arsenal, the Monaco Grand Prix, The World Cup and the Hungarian Grand Prix. I’ve hung out with Lothar Matthaus, met Lukas Podolski and been on the plane next to Wyclef Jean. The highlight though was dinner with Rick B at the Morrocan place.
But now a new season begins. What does it hold for the Arsenal? Here’s what I see…
I’m loathe to criticise Wenger as for the most part he has been correct in judgement. I have been on record since the very beginning that I thought Cesc, Senderos and Flamini were all useful and they have been. I believe in Eboue just like I believed in Toure, and I believe that Johan Djourou will be this season’s Eboue.
I desperately hope that Robin van Persie can turn flashes of brilliance into consistent excellence. I hope that Adebayor can provide the ‘fox in the box’ that will pick up garbage goals created by Hleb, Freddie and Henry.
I hope Gilberto can stand tall and be healthy all year and I hope Rosicky can be a weapon.
As for Reyes and Cashley - if they don’t want to play for Arsenal they should be sold. They can then go join the long list of former Gunners who have gone on to be stars for other teams, you know, like, uml, well there was… um, yeah, you know…
Theo Walcott. Honestly I expect nothing from him this year. Maybe a goal in the Carling Cup.
Can Mad Jens be awesome again? I hope so, he was the MVP last year in my opinion.
Thierry Henry. The Captain. All we’re asking for is another year as the world’s best striker, no pressure or anything.
Wenger is going to have to do a hell of a job this year. A run to the finals of the Champions League is unlikely and this is going to be the toughest EPL season he has ever endured. Chelsea and Liverpool are positively loaded. ManU will be tough and Spurs are going to absolutely be out for blood. Blackburn, Bolton, Newcastle and Villa could all be tough matches as well. A run to a cup final, let alone a trophy is going to be a big ask. Realistically, I see the Arsenal fighting for the 3rd/4th spot.
This could be a tough year and at some point, we’re going to have to become a buying club. Not superstars, but a couple of established players who can hold the line while Walcott, Djourou, Bendter, Lupoli and Diaby mature into the next great Arsenal team.

Yes, I hope for what you hope. I see some of what you see.
I like Aliadiare & Hleb to step forward and contribute big time.
I TOTALLY AGREE on us fighting for a 3rd or 4th spot at best, and hopefully making another Cup run in either the FA or CL.
August 19th, 2006 at 12:51 pm
Eventhough we dominated this game..I felt it was the same old Arsenal from last year..We would dominate the lower tier teams but would find it hard to score…Nobody to just shoot the damn ball..
Walcott was the one thing different from last year..what a player he can be…Hleb and Fab still gets pushed around…Need a true winger on the right side..Hleb is too central and is more of a Cesc replacement…Can’t expect Eboue to be winger and right back at the same time against better opposition.
Missing the muscle in the box…Reyes for Baptista please
August 19th, 2006 at 1:25 pm
Is this a new season? I looked like the same one as last year to me.
Same type of match. Villa get ONE chance and score on a set-piece. We don’t finish our chances, and we drop points to a team we shouldn’t. At Home.
Not a good start to the season, obviously. Eboue and Walcott were bright spots for me… didn’t like Adebeyeor BARKING at one of our defenders after the goal. He can just feck off and finish a goal for once at the other end.
August 19th, 2006 at 2:20 pm
As I said before, Adebayor ain’t good enough. We going to end up selling him in a couple of years anyway. Complete arse of a player (has his good points) who might get a few away goals if we’re lucky.
Eboue is good running with the ball but I am still relucant to say he is a good attacking full-back purely because he hasn’t a clue how to cross or shoot.
Apart from Rosicky that’s it, that’s all we’ve got. Just keep flogging Gilberto and Fabregas until they collapse in exhaustion.
August 19th, 2006 at 2:40 pm
Please stop slating Adebayor. Henry wasn’t good either, on the 2nd thought he was poor. Only Ljungberg did well, he was fighting like in his best days, like he wasn’t injured. Walcott was good, make the difference, but I think he can offer a lot more on the right flank.
The movement of the ball was good, but we couldn’t find that final ball, we combined too much at the edge of the box without shooting. I hope the next game we will have Rosicky available to make that killer pass or shoot the **AYE CARUMBA**(censored) ball.
At the and of the day it wasn’t that bad. Blackburn were thrashed 3:0 at Pompey, Spurs lost 2:0 at Bolton and Pool drew against Sheffield Utd.
August 19th, 2006 at 3:42 pm
I agree..Adebayor is the only one who looked likely to score…He had 2 great chances and did pretty well, but was unlucky.
August 19th, 2006 at 3:48 pm
Silly mistake from Jens. He will be so annoyed with himself.
Henry looked rusty. Didn’t combine well with Adebayor or Van Persie but they didn’t look too sharp either.
Defence hardly coughed up a chance. Hoyte caught out once or twice but recovered with great pace. Djourou hardly figured as he was usually last man back.
It was one-way traffic with lots of chances. Hit the post and the bar, with two shots kicked off the line. Would have liked to have seen the goalkeeper tested more as some good chances were sent wide.
With some more sharpness up front we would have scored five or six on the balance of play. And credit to Aston Villa, they had all the luck, but they kept winning headers and making last-ditch tackles for ninety-three minutes.
August 19th, 2006 at 10:40 pm
we dominate totally then get done by the only chance they have the whole match….also an error by lehmann too.
our ONLY problem…f-cking OVERELABORATION. i wish wenger could encourage more shooting in the team.
henry was probably our worst attacking player out there. totally out of form - and since all our players always look for him, we were always going to struggle with him still being that rusty.
eboue for me played quite bad! yeah, he got forward a lot but what is the point in that if u ALWAYS make a bad final pass?
as for walcott, it was nice to finally see him play, he added some direct running and crossed for our assist. but to me the really tangible thing he brought to the game was rousing the CROWD. uptill then the crowd was rather quiet and i couldnt believe the noise when theo came on…….and all ‘cos he’s a local lad.
August 20th, 2006 at 7:00 am
We should be improving in a couple of games I hope. Lets hope all this transfer saga ends soon so all of us can move on.
August 20th, 2006 at 10:07 am
Let’s all remember that this was only the first game. Tottenham lost and Liverpool tied a promoted club on a dubious penalty. The season isn’t over yet. Also, remember that we had some tired players out there. Freddie obviously isn’t completely match fit and Henry just played a full 90 in a meaningless friendly for France (man do I hate those worthless matches). And anyone who thought we were going to thrash them 5-0 like last year was going to be disappointed. Martin O’Neill’s teams are always well organized defensively. Last year we probably wouldn’t have gotten that equalizer after Villa started keeping everyone in front of the ball.
August 20th, 2006 at 1:17 pm
After seeing how some teams fared yesterday (I’m pointing and lauging at you Sp*ds!!!) with bad losses and injuries (Liverpool) it could have been worse. . which is not to say it couldn’t have been better.
Should have won going away but we were trying to be way to cute. That part of yesterday’s match was way to familiar. Worst part is that Chel$ki doesn’t get off to a mediocre start like this (see today’s pasting of Man City). No secret why the likes of us and Liverpool finish behind them = Win the games you should win and split the matches against the top clubs.
Not worried about TH14’s performance yesterday. He was overused in France’s friendly. . NEEDLESSLY. Early season stupidity by FIFA and Raymond Dommenech. Would be brilliant if we could get him out of Wednesday’s CL match after halftime or hold him out all together.
One last thing. . Stag, did you send a note the Winterburn and company on Arsenal TV Online yesterday? The read a note from a Steven in the US that was something like “doesn’t this look all to familiar?”.
Come on your Reds!
August 20th, 2006 at 2:35 pm
Yes, it was the first game.
But already the excuses. We were tired? Henry was rusty? We were unlucky.
Blah fecking Blah fecking Blah.
We dropped points to a team we NEVER should have dropped points to.
Liverpool drew and Tottenham lost? Thats your consolation??
Are you kidding me?
United won 5-1 and Chelsea 3-0.
They both looked fantastic.
Lets save the excuses… because we are going to have injuries and fatigue for real when the season gets going a bit.
This is the CLASSIC reason why Chelsea DOMINATE in the league. They simply do not DROP SILLY POINTS. They were missing some players too… but they have great depth. Thats why they’ll win the league again.
And… you folks love to go on and on about “our kids” and the future dominance in your dreams.
Kalou Diarra and Mikel all came on for Chelsea… not to mention SWP and Essien who are like 23…
Match Day One, is a shining example of WHY we need to STRENGTHEN the squad NOW, before the Aug.31 deadline.
If we aren’t going to use Reyes and Cole, we need replacements for them.
PRONTO. RAPIDO. Like quick, eh.
August 20th, 2006 at 2:59 pm
I had to cringe when Wenger used Internationals as an excuse for the draw, especially as Utd & Chelsea hammered their opposition with such consumate ease.
There’s no point overreacting though, this was always going to be difficult - because a new manager coming in will always lift a team, and O’Neill is tactically astute. Also there may have been some nerves trying to get the first result at Ashuburton - we need time to settle in there.
One thing’s is for sure, why did Wenger bother making the pitch wider when Arsenal don’t use the width. As usual, everything was played narrow, with Ljungberg and Hleb cutting in from the flanks and running into a wall of Villa players. Adebayor will be a failure if we don’t use his height and stretch the opposition with crosses.
The players still trying to walk it in. This looked exactly like the same Arsenal that dropped so many points last season. Dodgy at the back from set pieces, over-reliant on one player for goals, no strength in depth.
At least Walcott looked great. If Arsenal lose Cole and Reyes and Wenger doesn’t buy in key areas, this could be a long and miserable season. A key game will be away at Man Utd, the will be without Rooney, Scholes and horseface, I wonder if we’re capable of beating them at long last. Or will we be half a mile behind them after just 4 games?
August 20th, 2006 at 3:30 pm
I don’t know why the media, players and fans alike made a big song and dance about the big pitch in the first place. We’ve played at big pitches like Old Trafford and Anfield for the last few years and created very little. The small pitch at Highbury helped us because it created panic in the opposition and when they gave us the ball we didn’t have far to go to take advantage by rampaging towards their goal.
After the watching the match again there are alot of positives but we can most definately kiss the title goodbye. You just don’t drop points in these games if you are planning on winning the title- ask Man United.
Again questions have to be asked of our strike force. As I said a few weeks ago, apart from Henry it’s all mediocrity. Adebayor and Van Persie are just to unreliable and inconsistent. Thus we are forced to keep playing Henry when he is struggling for rythm.
We could be five points behind Chelsea and Man United by next Saturday. Then we will have a real mental test- trying to win away from home.
August 20th, 2006 at 5:10 pm
I guess that’s the disadvantage of moving to a new ground, it will take us time to settle. I believe we can play on a much larger pitch, look at the way we performed against Real Madrid and Juventus in thier backyard. I think it is clear that Chelsea don’t want Ashley Cole one bit, they’ve already brought someone to replace William Gallas on the right-hand side and Wayne Bridge will not want to be shipped out on loan again or put on the bench by another superstar.
They don’t need Cole that’s obvious. Real don’t need Reyes either they’ve already got Baptista and Robinho on the left side of midfield so how will Reyes fit in, if Reyes think that he’ll get first team football with a click of a finger because he is Spanish then he couldn’t be any more wrong. Let me tell you straight the sapnish love their Brazilians and that’s a fact.
I know it’s not going to happen anytime soon but i hope Rosicky replaces Gilberto in centre of midfield, the guy just doesn’t have it. Rick i disagree with your comment on expecting nothing from Theo Walcott this season, the guy was the reason why we salvage a point against Aston Villa, he changed the game and gave us more attacking flair than Freddie on the left wing. Walcott will be vital for us this season and we should use him to our advantage, every week we should bring him on in the second half 15 minutes or 10 minutes before full-time when everyone is tired and he’ll be devastating. We brought him for ?12 million for a reason, not for him to warm the bench every week and take crap from the media saying we are messing up his career.
We’ve got enough attackers up front all we need to do is out out the defence,we’ve got to get Curtis Davies, Djourou is just not good enough we should have selled him out on loan like the rest of the reserves we have sent out and put Cygan in his place till Davies arrives and Senderos can be 3rd defender. Another guy we should sell is Flamini, i just don’t see him getting first team football and he is very weak in midfield, he was horrible against Barcelona in Paris. He has to go.
Another guy i think would be a good buy is Owen Hargreaves, we missed out on Micheal Carrick and i don’t want us to miss out on both Carrick and Hargeaves to United. Hargreaves could replace them worthless Gilberto and Flamini and fill in alongside Fabregas. It’s worth it.
I don’t think this season will be a tough as people say it will be, it’s because we haven’t sort out the futures of Cole and Reyes and not winning our opening match that’s got the media on our backs putting pressure on Wenger 24/7.
I’m not making any predictions yet, i just hope we perform in the transfer market as well as on the pitch, if not then we don’t stand a prayer this season.
August 20th, 2006 at 6:29 pm
I?d like to pick up on BFA?s comments re Walcott.
How long have we been waiting for that?
?That? being someone with the ability to come on late in the game and be dynamic.
Now we have Walcott and van Persie and even Reyes. All explosive and highly creative and who bring the threat of goals.
The beauty about Walcott is that this sort of ?cameo role? suits him perfectly.
He doesn?t need the burden of expectation that comes with being a starter?.a gradual integration into the team will wet his appetite and develop his confidence.
Think back even to Generation 2. Who did we have to change a game?.I can?t think if anyone. Sure we had experienced players (Wiltord and Kanu come to mind)?.but they were guys more adept at starting games than coming on and changing them mid-stream. They added depth not fire power as substitutes. I can recall countless games where Kanu and Wiltord would be rolled out late in the game?.aside from a few notable exceptions (Kanu against Chelsea) it rarely amounted to a dynamic change.
I just have this incredibly good feeling that something exciting is brewing at Arsenal.
And before folk go slashing their wrists re Cole/Reyes?.remember Gallas/Drobga/Crespo et al at Chelsea, remember Ronaldo at Man U. We?re not alone, and the outcome doesn?t always have to be negative!
As for Wenger?s ?excuses??.that?s his MO?.that?s why his players love him?.he believes it is his responsibility to shield his boys from the media?.simple.
You don?t seriously think what he says to the media is his holistic view do you???
No way.
Football oozes out of his pores.
He knows only too well when his boys are doing well and when not.
But he won?t publicly criticize them, he is a class act.
He is one of the best media managers around.
His job is not to enlighten the media or us?.it?s to manage the team.
August 20th, 2006 at 7:14 pm
By the way, I know Hleb annoyed a few fans by coming inside and not utilising the width, but that’s why I love him. Instead of doing boring ass chelsea-style crosses he comes inside and tries to create a storm. It doesn’t always come off but you gotta love the effort. He’s an old romantic is Alex.
August 20th, 2006 at 7:51 pm
The latest rumors have the Ashley Cole saga ending, and William Gallas and CASH coming our way in return.
I really hope this happens quickly. I still do NOT like Cole going to Chelsea and improving their squad, but them losing Gallas, (and us gaining him)… helps balance the scales. Now if we use the cash to bring in someone else, we might have something.
Not the end of the world with the draw on Saturday, but its still a sign that this year will be no different than last year in the league. We still have a bit of time for Wenger to sign some players. We definitely need a WIN in our next match in the league, anything else, and we could be 4 or 5 points back after just 2 matches.
Chelsea looked the part again… their kids looked good too… it will take a small miracle to topple them in the league, as they do not drop points against mediocre teams very often. We OFTEN do… that leaves us with virtually no chance.
August 20th, 2006 at 8:45 pm
To Stag and the rest:
If you must react to each game with dire predictions of how the entire season will turn out, please do everyone the decency of conceding when you are wrong and Arsenal obtains significantly better results than you expected. For starters, please concede you were completely wrong last year because an utterly depleted Arsenal did reach the Champions League Final, managed to qualify for the Champions League, and somehow convinced Thierry Henry to align his future with the team. Please also concede you were wrong last week when Arsenal beat Dinamo Zagreb 3-0. There, we all feel better. It’s so easy to predict doom, so easy to be a cup half empty supporter, so comfortable to label oneself a “realist” rather than a “pessimist.” In fact, Stag, if you want to be a pessimist this weekend, the Red Sox are giving you more than enough reason to despair, please leave the Gunners out of the equation.
As I’ve written previously, Chelsea will win the EPL this year. Let’s get over it. Wenger is building a brilliant new team right before our eyes, we should be perceptive enough to appreciate it. Yes, Arsenal did not finish its opportunities yesterday in a manner reminiscent of last year. However, the team did not show yesterday the panic I remember from certain games last year when the opposition scored the first goal. Arsenal’s style of play always draws the observation that a fox in the box would solve all of its problems. I say give RVP and Abedayor a chance. Moreover, I utterly disagree with the Eboue comments. I think his finishing will only improve and, in any event, his pace and agression already subject defenders to incredible pressure.
As for Reyes and Cole, why don’t we wait and see what happens. Wenger has never shown any hesitancy in getting rid of players, no matter how big their reputations, when he feels they are not worth the trouble. So there is a reason he’s playing out the string on this one and, if the reason is that he’s going to get Gallas and cash, then that’s just another reason why he’s the manager and all the fans who were calling for him to resolve the Cole issue in July are just fans who write in to fansites.
Finally, the notion that the comparison of Chelsea’s so-called “kids” with the Arsenal youth movement is a false one on several levels. First, the Chelsea “kids” were bought when their reputations as major talents were known by all who could read a newspaper. Second, SWP’s career has stagnated if not outright destroyed at Chelsea. Third, Essien and Kalou are not kids.
In short, Arsenal is a different team than Chelsea, with different methods, different expectations, different values, and a different management. Give Wenger his room, trust him, and give him the time he deserves. He’s done nothing but prove he’s Arsenal’s most important resource over the last 10 years.
August 20th, 2006 at 9:02 pm
Rooney and Scholes will play against us. They have a three-match ban which starts on Wednesday at Charlton, and then they have another two games before they play with Arsenal. We play against Dinamo in midweek and our match is postponed, so that must have been the reason why you thought that they will miss the Arsenal game. At this time ManUtd. game is our third EPL game, but United’ fourth, cos they play as I said with Charlton on Wednesday, so Rooney and Scholes will play.
August 20th, 2006 at 10:52 pm
ManUre has tabled a serious bid for Hargreaves. Fergie wants to have a core of English players in his team while Wenger is still adamant he does not need reinforcements. If Hargreaves is moving to the EPL, it will unfortunately be ManUre, not us.
August 20th, 2006 at 11:29 pm
Your comments are right on regarding Wenger..He did extremely well in the January transfer window in getting Diaby, Wolcott and Ade. BUT, my frustration and probably some others here on the site is that we are so close to being able to beat Chelsea. I understand we could never have Chelsea’s depth, but then what team has. I am not ready to accept that Chelsea are going to win the EPL this season because I believe we are just 2 players away from matching them..We are the closest team to be able to do this..Liverpool don’t have the depth to compete a whole season with Chelsea..But we have enough depth but lack in couple of key areas..Before the Cole/Reyes saga, we all knew we lacked the beef in the middle of the field. We barely made it to this year’s CL. I wonder what you would be saying if we had not qualified for CL this year. Would you blame AW for being so stubborn and sticking with youth.
Now, I don’t know the financial situation that Arsenal are in, but I have to believe that from the 50 million or so pounds we earned from the CL games last year, we have to be sitting on some good cash for players..He did not spend much in January and only bought Rosicky. I am not suggesting that we stunt the youth progress but getting 2 experienced players in the upper 20’s can only help, while giving youth the time to develop…
Why risk not making it into the CL next season. Maybe this team is good enough to qualify, but it is a very big maybe right now. While there is more certainty that Chelsea, Liverpool and ManU will qualify. If we had drawn Chelsea,Liverpool, ManU in the earlier stages of the CL last year, would we have made it past them?
I feel we are in the same situation as last year…Cesc and Hleb, while great creatively, are lightweights against physical teams. We need an enforcer type player so that the Dan Smith’s of the world will think twice about injuring our players.
I want to see a Essien/Appiah/Baptista type player in our midfield. Wenger is brilliant in that he identified Baptista as the one he wanted last year..He is in my opinion the missing link. He can play forward, CM, and DM. I was very impressed with him when RM played Real Salt Lake. If we can swap Reyes for Baptista, 1 for 1, I would say we can win the EPL this season. So, hopefully Wenger will try his best to pry loose Baptista even if we have to give some Cole money to RM. I hope RVP steps it up this year and takes some of the scoring pressure of TH. That would leave the CB as the other position that needs strengthening since I don’t believe Senderos can handle Drogba or Sheva.
August 20th, 2006 at 11:44 pm
Dearest Village Gooner…
We are fans… so we will ride the roller-coaster of the season and make game to game commentary as the season progresses. (At least I will, thats the life of a fan).
Virtually everyone was wrong on Arsenal in the CL last season, so no sweat in admitting that. It was a miraculous run. I suppose you were predicting it all along?!!!!!! I doubt it.
Our results in the league were far WORSE than I ever expected last year. But I don’t see it being much better this year, as currently constituted. As RICK said in his season’s preview, he sees Arsenal fighting for 3rd or 4th in the league and HOPEFULLY getting into the finals of a cup. That would be good from this “current” team.
Its just as easy to predict WONDERFUL THINGS. There are folks on here with us winning the league “as is”… Thats quite silly in my eyes. Predicting “DOOM”?
Well, if you define doom as fighting for a CL spot in the league, then sure. But thats REALITY in my opinion.
Wrong about Dinamo Zagreb? Good win. I said it would be a tough match. It was for 45 minutes, at 0-0. Unfortunately, Dinamo don’t play in the EPL. Our league form continues to SUCK. If we continue to drop points to mediocre teams, then DOOM it is.
Yes, as I pointed out a few weeks ago, I had the SAME problem with the RedSox. They WATCHED the Yankees improve at the trading deadline, and did F**K all. They hung on to the precious “KIDS with POTENTIAL”… and they too are paying the heavy price.
I’ll say this for the Sox though, they have a far better chance of winning the division than the Arsenal do of beating Chelsea in the league. Why? Because the Yankees are a very flawed team as well, but Chelsea is not. They don’t have much weakness in their team.
by the way… KALOU is 21 years old. Is he a veteran? ESSIEN is 23… I supposed he’s an old man? They are KIDS. They might not be 17 or 18, but they are young… they are youth… they’ll be there for years.
August 21st, 2006 at 12:19 am
perhaps a tad premature to be conducting a mid-season review
August 21st, 2006 at 2:52 am
A very sensible analysis, well said kiwi. Particular ur view on the way AW handling the media, can’t agree more.
August 21st, 2006 at 6:04 am
Brand new stadium, same old Arsenal.
The only change I could see was our improvement in heading with Ade having one cleared off the line and Toure scoring one from an offside position.
Apart from that, it was funny to see “Fly Emirates” on our shirts as well as the referee’s.

Stag:
I’m not a pollyanna predicting incredible results such as pipping Chelsea for the EPL title this year. I’m saying that the deadline for making transactions is still 10 days away and Wenger is not going to be hurried simply because Arsenal fans lack the patience to wait 10 days. When Sept. 1 rolls around, make your comments, but until then, I believe you should reserve judgment. If Wenger pries Gallas away from Chelsea, it is only because he did not listen to you and others like you who implored him to deal with the Cole situation immediately.
As for reacting to every single game, I didn’t write “I told you so” when Arsenal beat Dinamo Zagreb 3-0; this is going to be a long season, hopefully with many dramatic and positive moments. I don’t believe Arsenal is going to challenge for the EPL title. Moreover, I don’t believe it’s realistic to believe it will do so. I would be quite happy with a top 3 finish. Last year and this year are clearly years of transition for a variety of reasons. Who would have thought two years ago that the Arsenal of 2006-07 would not feature Vieira, Campbell, Cole, Pires, and Reyes? That’s a major transformation. The new stadium will also require adjustment by Wenger and the players.
In short, give it time; don’t go off every time Arsenal does not finish off a mediocare opponent in Emirates Stadium. I share your impulse (and that of Rajthomas) to implore Wenger to buy that mid-field enforcer; I too was yelling at the television last winter when the Boltons, Fulhams, West Hams of the EPL were kicking the Gunners around the pitch. However, I actually trust Wenger and, unlike Chelsea (and the Yankees), Arsenal does not need to be the champions every year. I hope for all our sakes that (unlike the rumours about Mourinho), Wenger will not leave when Arsenal does not win a title or finishes too low in the EPL. This is the great thing about rooting for this team (that I have all infrequently experienced in American sports). Arsenal, under Wenger, is a work of art that when complete has a beauty and elegance that no other team (at least in the EPL) can come close to matching.
August 21st, 2006 at 10:41 am
Stag,
Yes, that is my consolation. Sorry it?s a 10 month season and if you want to freak out week 1 you?re going to have an ulcer by the holidays, my friend. It?s your right as a supporter but don?t expect everyone else to lose their mind so early. I share your passion but don?t gut me because I?m not going to start gnashing my teeth about it anymore than I?m going to throw dirt on the Red Sox grave before the season is over.
Was the start ideal? Hell no. Especially not with an away match coming up next weekend. Could it have been worse? Yes. That point may be what snags the league title or a CL spot. Chelsea didn?t come back to the pack until later in the year. Again it?s a long season.
Nothing about the end of last season or what was done, or not done, made me think we would get off to a blistering start. This squad is still a work in progress and I accept there will be maddening moments along the way.
Excuses? Why is it that everything that is uttered that isn?t damn Arsene or bring in a named player an excuse? We rely on Thierry more so than Chelsea or Manu relies on any one player the way. That is a close to a fact as you can get. Is that an indictment that we still don?t have an ideal (big enough or experienced enough) squad? Yes, I would agree 100%.
I don?t think the squad is set unfortunately you?re just going to have to wait. I check BBC and Sky online multiple times a day to see if something has happened.
August 21st, 2006 at 6:48 pm
I’m in agreement with both Rick and nipuna. As for the season, I’m already prepared for something of a repeat of last year (although I’m hoping for a lot more). If we can get more of the end of last season and less of the start then top 4 seems reasonable. I’m expecting better away performance but fear we won’t show the consistency we need.
Players I’d like to see step up or shine: van Persie, Ljungberg and Rosicky. I want Jens to repeat his MVP performance. I’m hoping Walcott will be like Cesc under Vieira: not always starting but showing flashes of brilliance and great improvement. (Cesc I expect to continue to shine.) I’m not sold on Djourou or Hoyte but there’s potential. Reyes and Ashley: thanks and good-bye. Henry: what Rick said.
As for the game, it was deja vu all over again. First, time and time again we’re in the box and the ball gets passed around and eventually lost without a shot. I’m not saying we’ve got to shoot every time, but we need to be trying something else. I’d like to see more crosses (like Walcott’s) and more movement up the flanks to the line. When fit, I’m hoping Rosicky will provide more with some Gerrard or Lampard type goals from distance (like he did in the World Cup). Second, we play amazing the last 15 minutes as we scramble to come back and maybe even win. Instead of waiting to the end, we need that kind of attack and ethusiasm to come in the first half.
I wanted a brace to finish Highbury and start Ashburton but it wasn’t to be. Still it’s only one game and we’ve got a year to go.
Up the arse!

Our league form continues to suck? Care to recount how we finished last season in the league?
First of all, I’d like to see any Ronaldinho shoot through 11 players in the box. A risky tactic that, with O’Neill, was likely to pay off. But we had something like 8 shots blocked outside of the box so the idea that we don’t shoot is bollocks. What isn’t bollocks is how poor we are with corners when RvP and Reyes don’t take them. And a certain player needs to work on his final ball cause if he gets 10% better with it he’s going to be the best left back in Europe.
Aside from Gilberto, no one used any width against Villa. Had Reyes been in the lineup, that would have been different as well. And I don’t want to hear anybody slagging Adebayor. He nearly made two goals on his own, and is here to hold up the ball. The fact that he’s getting two very good headers cleared brilliantly off the line is not an indication of a poor player OR inisher.
We showed composure to get the equalizer and clearly should have done better around goal at times. We’re young, the stadium is new, its to be expected. But if we start losing our grip because we hit the bar and had trouble getting through 11 of O’Neill’s men camped out for the duration, we’d might as well choose another club…because clearly, Portsmouth are going all the ay this year. Why? Because they got all three points and according to the way we judge the season, they’re as likely as we’re not.
And stag, hang it up about Chelsea. There’s little we can do about them until we play them. I don’t get why you go on about their improvements. What do we need to do, spend 30 million to finish one of our 19 chances? Really.

For all of you that are predicting that the same old Arsenal are going to repeat last season, you’d better open your mouths when we win. Did you say the same thing after the DZ match? Where were the brilliant predictions then?
I can see it now…match by match as the wind blows.
Get a grip and get behind the club when we lose, too.
