They left it late, but Arsenal scored twice to add to the 3-0 lead they had built two weeks ago in Croatia to defeat Dinamo Zagreb 5-1 on aggregate in tonight’s Champions League 3rd Round Qualifier.
Freddie Ljungberg captained the side for the first time in his Arsenal career as Thierry Henry and Gilberto both started on the bench.
Arsenal found themselves trailing on the night after only 12 minutes, an Eduardo goal giving the travelling fans a flicker of hope.
However, it was Freddie’s night, as the Super Swede’s perfectly placed downward header sped past the diving Zagreb keeper to level the score after 77 minutes.
Theo Walcott made his second appearance in as many games, and proved just as influential tonight as he did on Saturday against Aston Villa. With his back to goal, Thierry Henry controlled the ball at the top of the penalty area, and found an open Walcott to his left. Walcott then sent a perfect low cross back across the face of goal, finding an on-rushing Mathieu Flamini who took one touch before smashing the ball into the net and giving Arsenal the win on the night.
So, the Gunners are in tomorrow’s draw for the first group stage of the Champions League. Based on Arsenal’s history in the competition over the past few years, they find themselves seeded, thus avoiding some of the stronger sides of Europe. That doesn’t mean that there aren’t any strong non-seeded sides, especially as a quick glance finds names like Bayern Munich.
The draw can be followed live starting at Noon ET tomorrow on UEFA.com
PS - Three cheers for Boro! ![]()

The first win at The Emirates. Hopefuly there are plenty to come.
First of all I want to say that our defence was shaky. Kolo was responsible for the goal we conceded, but Hoyte and Djourou are not for the first team yet. Djourou wasn’t that bad but he is too young and inexperienced and I hope we will get Gallas to partner Toure. Also I want to say that our defense was bad because Flamini simply is not good enough to be a defensive midfielder. He was nowhere near the back-line to protect them, and today we saw that if we lose Gilberto due to an injury or suspension we are in deep trouble. Buy new DM Wenger, please.
The midfield(without Flamini) looked good. Cesc and Hleb passed the ball very well, and in the attack RvP was superb. He only needed a goal to complete his good show today, but hey, he was assistant for the Freddie’s strike, so I think he proved in these two matches against Zagreb that he should partner Henry upfront. But, I still believe that Adebayor is understandig and playung with Thierry better than Robin. We will see on Saturday at City who will start.
Walcott came 10 minutes from the end, and made another assist. I think Wenger should give him a start or some more playing time(30-45 min.).
All in all we played an average game, maybe because of the result from the first match, but if we played with more dangerous side we would have lost.
August 23rd, 2006 at 6:22 pm
Watched the match on ITV4 tonight. Breakdown in coverage between the 70th and 80th minute which meant the lead-up and follow-up to the equaliser were missed.
Nevertheless, some interesting observations. Similar game to Saturday. Stupid defensive mistake (Toure and Almunia as opposed to Lehmann and Adebayor) leads to goal for team who were doing nothing. This time we made a better fist of fighting back but the team still looked like it was in lower gear. Sometimes Freddie went past his man but couldn’t make it count and had to check back. Lack of fitness? Carrying another injury? Getting too old? It will take a few more games to tell.
Van Persie looked sharp but wasn’t linking with the team. Great individual moments. He needs to work on this.
Another late goal from a cental midfielder. Fabregas got two in the first leg, Gilberto on Saturday and now Flamini. Have we found a new way of scoring goals. I am not going to draw conclusions from early games but this needs watching. Both goals from crosses as well.
Bottom line. Team were complacent, concede soft goal but fought back to win first competitive game at new stadium. No jinx there. 100% record in Europe. Unbeaten start to season. Yeah, yeah, yeah, it is possible to be as stupidly optimistic as Stag is pessimistic.
Three games down and we have had a solid start to the season. Next time to reassess is the closure of the transfer window and after that the end of September when we have played some serious games. For the cautiously optimistic there are some good signs.
August 23rd, 2006 at 6:24 pm
the performance was due to the result in the first match - which was the REAL test. u cant expect anything else from a team having a 3-0 lead.
that said our defence is pretty shaky and when kolo who is our only experienced defender starts making mistakes, then u get a bit worried.
August 23rd, 2006 at 6:25 pm
Disappointed with Hleb myself. While he played some good balls he failed to give us width on the large pitch. Freddie and later Theo were better at that.
Flamini popped up in the box to score the winner.
August 23rd, 2006 at 6:44 pm
Yes, it’s good to see the midfielders are in goalscoring form, something we lacked last season. But overal, Flamini was bad. His job is to sit infront of the back four to give them security. Gilberto is the only player in the squad who can do that.
And hey, in our first three matches we scored six goals and five are scored by our midfielders(2-Cesc, Gilberto, Ljungberg and Flamini). That can only be good for the team.
August 23rd, 2006 at 6:50 pm
I don’t want to overemphasise the pitch. However, if you look back a few seasons, we struggled at Wembley on a bigger pitch. That suggests to me we may need to change our style. It is too early for us amateurs to spot and analyse any changes but the goals from midfield may be a sign of change.
I also think that the wider pitch will mean more goals at both ends and that we will never come close to matching previous defensive records.
August 23rd, 2006 at 7:00 pm
I didn’t see anything worth taking from this game except for Van Persie’s performance, which for the first half hour was mesmerising.
The players obviously need to get used to new surroundings and feel their way into the new stadium, and of course being 3-0 up from the first leg makes it difficult to be truly motivated no matter what. I thought we played excellently at Zagreb, and that was the game that really mattered.
The defence is a massive concern for me, and Flamini is useless at protecting them. The lack of midfield cover at Arsenal is truly abysmal. The defence has cover, problem is the players are simply not good enough. You watch Hoyte and realise how much we will miss Cole. But then you watch Djourou and you wish all of a sudden that Senderos was fit. Eboue is great going forward, sometimesm, but defensively he’s costly.
Yes it’s early in the season, but early signs from a defensive perspective demonstrate that we’ll win f*ck all and will be vying for 4th place. Wenger has to buy, it’s the only thing that will change the scenario. Now I have a rotten feeling that he will hold out for Gallas, and when 31st of August comes along he’ll fail - have no plan B - and Cole will sod off to Chelsea. Another season ruined.
August 23rd, 2006 at 7:14 pm
Thats why Wenger needs to spend some serious money on Hargreaves and not let ManUre get him.
August 23rd, 2006 at 7:36 pm
Lauren, Senderos and Clichy will be first choice come the end of September alongside Kolo. When you have three back-up players in, of course it look shaky. Furthermore, you had Almunia in goal when I would prefer Poom. At the same time, apart from the goal, they had few clear-cut chances tonight and neither did Aston Villa so someone is doing something right. We need to get rid of the stupid mistakes but there will always be some shakiness with a back-up defence - look at Liverpool last night who owned the ball and the game but looked likely to concede everytime Maccabi went on the attack.
August 23rd, 2006 at 7:46 pm
Man, why you see Eboue as a 2nd choice. For me he is a starter, he has done well for Ivory Coast at the ACN and then at the World Cup. Also he was terrific for us last season when he came in to replace Lauren. And do you think Lauren will be the same player after the long break he has had? For me it’s simple, Eboue is our starting right back, he is better and younger than Lauren, and he is our future(along with Gilbert).
August 23rd, 2006 at 8:02 pm
I know what you are saying and maybe with Senderos and Clichy there, he could play as first choice. He gives us more going forward but he is not as solid defensively. But if Lauren was fit tomorrow, I would bring him straight back in as Eboue, Hoyte and Djourou do lack experience. It may sound contradictory to say I have faith in each one but not all together at once at the start of the season! Funny but Lehmann and Toure, our two most experienced defensive players have been at least partly to fault for the two goals conceded.
Like I say generally, it is great to watch this team develop and to wonder how far they can go.
August 23rd, 2006 at 8:56 pm
What makes you think Lauren, Toure, Senderos and Clichy is a good defence?? Lauren has always been dodgy at the highest level, the amount of goals he’s cost Arsenal in Europe with his bad positional sense is tragic.
Senderos is by no means the finished article, on a big pitch like Highbury I am concerned about his lack of pace. As for Clichy, how many games has he even played at left back?? If that defence is the future of Arsenal, then it’s a worrying future as far as I’m concerned.
August 23rd, 2006 at 10:04 pm
I think that our backline is shakey … maybe because we had teenagers back there. But for real, if u think Sendy is good enough for Arsenal then Arsenal is good enough for the 4th place.
Ebou and Lauren are RB.?
Toure?is?an?Ok?CB.
LB?:?we?need?Cole?to?stay.?Clichy?is?great,?but?he?is?always?injured?..?will?he?be?the?same??
I think Sendy is a good SUB but not first line up starter ..
I?have?the?same?feeling?as?Danny,?Gallas?will?never?be?allowed?to?move?to?Arsenal.?We?need?to?look?somewhere?else?and?pay
and?bring?the?needed?CB.?AND?keep?Cole?…

August 23rd, 2006 at 10:31 pm
Well the performance wasn’t great but the main thing is that we got the result with an inexperience starting line up and are in the Group Stages of the Champions League. We just got to improve on our league form and lets hope that will start with a win against Manchester City this weekend, also let’s hope that Jens Lehamann shakes of his knee injury soon becuase if Almunia performs like that against City then we’re in trouble.
To be honest i think Walcott should be starting matches for now on, he can play on the right side of midfield in place of Hleb who have had his run in the team. Hleb too oftern have this habit of cutting into midfield and running at a pack of defence getting into Fabregas’s way all the time and it is getting very annoying and Wenger from the Villa game and in this game(Arsenal vs Dinamo Zagreb) should have notice that and give Walcott a run as a right-wing. Walcott is faster and makes a better right-winger than Hleb who is more of a dribbler and distributer of the ball insted of running down the right channel and delivering text book pin-point accuate crosses into the box for Adebayor to shrive on.
Notice for the second game in a row Walcott have dug us out of a sticky whole and rescued the game for us, he deserves his chance to start a league match. Flamini just doesn’t have it for me, Gilberto doesn’t impress me either. Rosicky after he comes from his injury should compete in centre of midfied. Hleb you is versatile aand can play on the left or right of midfield can compete with Reyes on the left and Walcott can compete with Freddie on the right side of midfield. As for up front, Robin van Persie as he has proved in the past yet again showed why he deserves to be first choice and partner Henry upfront. He was without a doupt Arsenal’s man of the match, the skill he showed was unbelievable and he should have had two goals on the score sheet but good defending from the Croations in the first half denied him.
One positve on a domestic note is that Chelsea lost to Middlesborough at the Riverside, That leaves them with 3 points and played 2 games so if we beat Man City then we will top Chelsea by 1 point and be 2 points behind Manchester United who beat Charlton at the Vally. This is our chance to step in the title race and show that we can compete with United and Chelsea this season. But it is clear that Cole and Reyes absence is affecting us and we don’t need this from these two, this has been going on for months and months, Chelsea and Real Madrid don’t want them so it is best Wenger just play them already, they are contracted Arsenal players. The board are still paying them thier wages so lets use them for heavens sake.
August 23rd, 2006 at 11:24 pm
Read the reports, saw the highlights.
After going into the match up 3-0, I didn’t really expect much from us. Not much to play for, just don’t do anything stupid or get anyone important injured. Just move on. Worried a bit by an early Zagreb goal… but we did what we had to do, and then managed to get 2 late goals. Bravo & well done for that.
I don’t take too much from the win. I think the 1st win at Zagreb was the important (and more impressive).
From what I’ve read, we were a bit shaky at the back… and Flamini is no Gilberto in the middle. Well… thats just re-affirming the facts.
Big pitch… new pitch… young squad… missing some key players… not much incentive to win. This all adds up to an un-even performance. Glad we won. Can wait to see the draw for the CL… and who is in our group.
Still have no idea what we will be like for the season… but if we don’t buy a solid defender, and a defensive midfielder to rest Gilberto at times… we will be un-even all year long… some good some great some so-so some ugly. Just like last year.
The GOOD news, is that Chelsea lost.
Our unbeaten record is safe! and… United’s win puts a bit of pressure on them. Not a bad day for the Arsenal at all.
Roll on!
August 24th, 2006 at 1:57 am
I guess that only new thing we learnt from the game is that our defence is weaker than we thought it is. A new defender is absolutely essential.
August 24th, 2006 at 2:56 am
And please Mr. Wenger change your tactics during the game IF we don’t seem to be able to penetrate, we shouldn’t be dropping points to teams like Villa AT HOME because we are going to regret it big time come the end of the season.
I swear every other game in the EPL so far has been different than ours, teams really do love to stick it to our way of playing, let’s show them some variations, some surprises, i bet if we score first in a game then we’ll get the opposition to open up some and then we can go for the kill.
But like Stag said, not a bad day for us, and i can’t wait to see who we get in the group stage.
August 24th, 2006 at 2:59 am
Oh yeah i read we’re interested in Khaka Kaladze, i wonder how true that is, but Wenger did say there are other players apart from Gallas that we CAN get, so there’s only one more week (finally) of this agonizing transfer period, let’s hope we get SOMEONE that Arsene likes….:)
August 24th, 2006 at 4:41 am
Flamini is not in there to play the exact same game that Silva would.
August 24th, 2006 at 5:13 am
Chill guys, 3 games in (2 of them pre-CL), lotsa guys with WC hangovers & some building fitness, some boys soon to return from long-term injury.
We’ve won 2 drawn 1
Game 2 and the unbeatable Chelsea have been….ummmmmm…beaten!!
August 24th, 2006 at 6:01 am
Check out Mourinho’s remark after their defeat: “I’ve managed for six or seven years. That was not a Jose Mourinho team.”
Now wonder he’s so SPECIAL…. HIS TEAM never lose. And when they lose, it’s someone else’s team!
August 24th, 2006 at 6:10 am
am already excited about the draw….honestly i?ll take anything as long as it doesnt include bayern, lyon or roma (pot 2) or benfica (pot 3).
for chelsea i wish: barca/real, benfica, galatasaray/hamburg.
this will really f-ck them over!
if they get a really bad draw like this….and then lose this weekend, imagine all the doom theories that will be propagated….LOL…
August 24th, 2006 at 6:50 am
People talk of Chelsea dropping points as if Arsenal is going to challenge them for the title, as things stands now they’re not.
Unless Wenger buys you can forget it - I think we’ll ship a couple of goals against Man City at the weekend if the back four plays anything like it did last night.
August 24th, 2006 at 7:16 am
Nope. I think we just happy the arrogrant bastard’s team dropping points that’s all. I don’t think they will do badly overall, i don’t believe anyone here would be so naive to write them off, or believe we will beat them to the title just because they lost one game neither.
Still, it’s great sight to see when Boro scored two goals and beat them in the final whistle. Personally I love it.
August 24th, 2006 at 8:08 am
I don’t take anything from Chelsea’s loss outside of the fact that early results need to be taken in context. So, Reading come back to beat Boro, who beat Chelsea, and then Reading lose to Villa who drew with us. Add to that Liverpool’s unconvincing performance and all you can say is, “Fulham and Charlton look like relegation certainties…maybe”. Let’s give it some time.
Also, it might be important to note that teams that bought like crazy aren’t exactly setting the world alight. Not right away, anyway, but the point is to let our players find their roles and settle in to the new environs. Away to City will be a massive test, and a good time to start gaining some momentum as the United game approaches.
So all in all, a somewhat satisfying ending to what was looking to be a frustrating day. Nothing to do but support the club, pray our ability to NOT score in front of goal wanes, and hope Wenger has a few cards up his sleeves once his reported transfer intentions become active.
August 24th, 2006 at 8:37 am
I could not get the Arsenal match o?n TV, but did catch the replay of the Boro upset of Chelsea. Sure they have a number of injured players (Robben got hurt during warm-ups last night), but Carvalho is just awful. If he continues to be o?n the first team back line for Chelsea, many teams should be hopeful that they can do what Boro did.
August 24th, 2006 at 9:31 am
i am one of the most fervent supporters of wenger as the manager for all the things he has done and ESPECIALLY for his wonderful transfer policy!
i am however a bit dissappointed that he is soooo rigid tactically (especially in-game tactics)…always putting idealism over pragmatism.
we all knew this new stadia would have a much larger pitch…so when wenger said at the beginning of the season that he would bring in 1 or 2, i was excited about the prospect of an all-out, fast, direct and attacking 4-3-3 (vintage barca and ajax of old). becos the midfield and attacking players we have are made basically for this formation.
fabregas, hleb, rosicky, ljunberg, gilberto and even flamini are all perfect for a 3 in the middle formation and especially for a large pitch.
reyes and RvP are perfect support strikers in the 3 upfront type formation. henry the perfect “roaming around” target man of constant attacking ajax vintage. and for those that still dont know: no, 4-3-3 is not 4-5-1 attacking. 4-3-3 is a totally different ballgame, if u watched ajax and barca in the early 90s and present day barca u will know exactly what it entails.
so as i was saying i am a bit dissappointed we are still persisting with our very narrow 4-4-2 on a large pitch as if we are unaware that we have moved. as i wrote in an article a few weeks past, those short, crisp passes will become unuseful now, there is far more distance to be covered.
our defence needs strengthening, every single fan has said that severally, so there is no point beating again….but our midfield and attacking personel is suitable for a really adventurous and more direct form of play on a LARGE pitch.
———-henry(ade)———————
—————————————–
-reyes(rosicky)———RvP(walcott)—–
—————————————–
——Cesc(Ljunberg)———————
———————–Hleb(Flamini)—–
————-Gilberto——————–
(Diaby, Song)
that is a lot more speed, directness upfront, without losing control of the middle. and the middle has two excellent passers too.
when compared to vintage teams, its not bad.
ajax 94-96: midfield 3 was: davids, seedorf and ronald deboer fighting for 2 spots with rijkaard playing the gilberto role. davids and seedorf were barely 20 then and ofcourse unproven.
fabregas creates (seedorf?s role then), davids does the hardwork (hleb, ljunberg, flamini), rijkaard covers (gilberto)
the attack had litmanen, finidi, kanu and overmars as the supporting duo to kluivert. not bad at all. henry, RvP, reyes, walcott, ade, bendtner(?) cant be far behind in quality.
and i could make comparisons to other great vintage barca, ajax teams and our attack and midfield will compare well with them.
wenger needs to play to the players advantages on a big pitch.
-gilberto is best behind two other CMs, so he can sit deeper
-fabregas is best when he knows there is enough defensive support for him
-flamini i believe is best as the “tireless dog” type of midfielder, putting in the hardwork and running and making gilberto?s and cesc?s work much easier.
-rosicky and hleb are passers who love to move to the middle- they are perfectly at home with a middle 3. and with 3 attackers upfront to benefit from their passes and runs.
-RvP is tagged as “not working for the ball enough” … but put him in a front 3 and on a big pitch, he?ll have to freedom to fulfill potential. van basten figured him out already.
-reyes for all his bad decisions has real speed, is hardworking and tricky on his day. put him nearer to the goal opposite RvP, let them both support henry - they can only blossom. reyers played in this EXACT position for sevilla. this is ofcourse a moot point if he leaves.
- henry?s roaming around is no problem as a target man in a 4-3-3. stoichkov, kluivert, van basten, and most especially JOHAN CRUIJFF! infact it is a requirement in a fluid 4-3-3 that the target striker of the 3 roams around. this would fit henry PERFECTLY!
we need to play to our strengths.
we have the forward and midfield players to be more adventurous and direct and to continue on our total football mission….but wenger needs to quickly develop a system that takes advantage of the big pitch.
i think 4-3-3 is the answer. it might NOT be (i aint a coach afterall). but for sure a NARROW 4-4-2 as we are playing it now is gonna constrain us.
August 24th, 2006 at 9:33 am
lol, i didnt know my “comment” had gone that long…..i must have got carried away there.
August 24th, 2006 at 9:51 am
That move by RvP to get the shot in from the right side was just SICK. I saw a certain Dennis flick to a red-mohawked Freddie in that one a bit.
I saw nothing special in Walcott’s cross for the goal though, the ball went right through a defender. But at least the kid is going out there and making things happen, so good on ‘im.
Adebayor and that shot over the bar though… squirm.
August 24th, 2006 at 11:10 am
the reason why the lost, is because they switched off.
The new guys he has brought in, aren’t that great, Schevchenko apart.
And he wants people to feel sorry for him as he has a few injuries.
Where were these people when we had 12 out last season.
We have about 7 out at the moment.
August 24th, 2006 at 11:22 am
Lets clear a few things up.
Almunia is rubbish and we need a better 2nd string keeper.
A replacement needs to be found for Gilberto, there was a big whole there.
Adebayor, whilst looks cool, missed a real sitter, ala Kanu, and is not first team standard. Bendenter seems beter.
Van Persie looked great, however I have read that he should pass the ball more, as he kept shooting, the same people that said we were not shooting against Villa.
Hleb was awful, how he stayed on the pitch that long I dont know.
Walcott, came on, and the first thing he did was a great timed run, where he was on side, the ref blew up for offside and he got booked. Crap linesman, and awful refing.
Hoyte gets exposed to easily, and he cant play against Man U, he needs to play as either a CB or a RB.
AW got it all wrong, he had a normal (ish) team out. He should have played a more junior team.
We need a middle three of Freddie, Gilberto and Fabregas at the moment with Walcott and Van Persie on the wings.
Nice to see that Aliadere is now behind Walcott, and really he should be let go.
August 24th, 2006 at 2:57 pm
I don’t think the defence was that bad. Djourou looks a bit jittery but he didn’t do a pile wrong. Fabregas gave him a bad ball for the yellow card.
The defence is being made to look slightly stretched by the somewhat alarmingly lack of cohesiveness of the midfield and attack. Wenger puts this down to match fitness but the performances in Zagreb would suggest otherwise. I think it could be the new stadium and bigger pitch. The players don’t know where to position themselves properly yet. Fabregas and Hleb are both playing way too deep for starters, and neither player is playing well enough to transition to the box. It’s strange how the performance levels of Fabregas and Hleb have dropped so much. Let’s hope it’s an abberation and they can rectify the problem at the City Of Manchester stadium, which seems to be a replica of the emirates in design and pitch size.
Adebayor once again substantiating my firm belief he is not Arsenal class. I’ll be happy if he shanks one in against City, but up front is a definate cause of concern. Van Persie is still to prove he anything more than a showman.
I’m disappointed with our attitude and belief thus far, we should be more confident after last season’s finish. If we surrender meekly on Saturday I would think Wenger will have to give a bollocking to a few players.
Let’s hope we get our fluency back, then the results will take of themselves.
August 24th, 2006 at 7:04 pm
I watched all the Netherland games during the World Cup and Robin was brilliant in this exact position. They played 4-3-3 with him on the right and he was their stand out player (I have no idea why they played Kuyt so much, I thought he was generally pretty rubbish). Unfortunately, Arsenal or Arsene aren’t going to switch to 4-3-3 any time soon. I’m still hoping RvP will step up this season and become our number 2 striker.
August 24th, 2006 at 9:45 pm
Glad you said that Mazza,
I watched the replay of the game after hearing peoples comments and I like the look of this defence given that possibly 3 aren’t first choice.
All 4 boys are athletic, mobile, fast in recovery, technically good. I’d expect their positional play to improve with experience.
Fab’s ball to Djourou was a shocker. I’ve liked the look of Djourou. He looks to have good timing in the tackle and his legs appear to become telescopic when clearing dangerous situations.
August 25th, 2006 at 4:43 am
I have been questioning Wenger’s lack of tactical nouse for years. The fact is Arsenal has dismally underperformed in Europe for almost a decade; and this was down to the rigidity of Wenger’s tactics - not the players.
The only year he got it right, last year, was because there was so many long term injuries he HAD to change the system.
Wenger has always played 4-4-2 and his strategic philosophy has always been the same. We can all see the problem with his strategy, if the players are not 100% sharp and focused enough to execute the way he wants to play it all goes wrong. There is no plan B. It’s not so much an issue of confidence, it’s a purely tactical problem. Wenger never adapts to the other team, he just sends the players out to play exactly the same way in every game no matter what.
Barring injuries, this year Arsenal will no doubt revert back to 4-4-2 for all Champions League games. And I can see the same problems arising that have knocked us out every year bar last year.
August 25th, 2006 at 5:52 am
Even Kolo made a mistake on the goal though. Now THAT’S scary, I still don’t think he’s human.
August 25th, 2006 at 7:49 am
Hoyte and Djourou are technically good? What an absurd comment. Fabregas, Van Persie & Henry are technically good, Hoyte can't even control a ball with his left foot or a creative pass with his right.
August 25th, 2006 at 4:09 pm
oh stop being silly…they’re defenders not artisans, they’re young and Hoyte is playing out of position.
August 26th, 2006 at 9:31 pm
Geez… so you agree with me then, they’re not technically good.
