   Postive thoughts?

   I saw some posts on the Big Soccer Board predicting 4-0 Arsenal wins, etc, and I’m not sure what Kool Aid they’ve been drinking. That’s not positive . . . that’s dillusional. It is very disheartening to start the season 0-1-1 but it is a marathon. We looked worse in some road losses last year. Anyone remember West frigging Brom last year for starters?

   So far we’ve seen that we have the “skill” to hold possession and played some very beautiful football so you can see while there is reason to have some belief in this squad’s potential. However, not finding the back for bloody friggin net is maddening obscures any beauty. There seeems to be a chemistry, or something lacking up front that is plugging things up. Some guys won’t shoot, preferring to pass. Some shoot and can’t hit an elephants arse with from six yards (Adey!). Some have been just a hair off (yesterday RvP and TH14)and need to find their form quickly.

   OK so maybe that’s not so positive but its not too negative, is it?

   that rosicky scenario is arsenals problem in a nutshell.

   a player is one-on-one with the keeper, no defender in sight, yet he TURNS and tries to pass the ball quite a long distance THROUGH defenders to another person who is supposedly “freer”. this is MORONIC. this is our problem.

   if rosicky were still playing for dortmund he won’t hesistate to have a shot. infact any other player in any other club will have a shot…but no, not at arsenal. instead u will have henry shouting calling for the ball.

   I agree Fred…Henry calling for the ball everytime really discourages our guys from shooting..Only guy who is stubborn enough not to listen to him is RVP..So, RVP looks like the only guy who might score..I thought RVP should have taken the free kicks since Henry knew he wasn’t sharp yet. I was very disappointed in Henry since if he knew he was only 60% why not let RVP take the free kicks. It would help if we had another proven striker who will make TH realize that everything doesn’t need to go thru him. But right now he is our only savior.

   I don’t agree with the main post that since we have so many stikers we shouldn’t buy more…If we had strikers who could score, then we don’t need to buy but if our current guys can’t score, especially Ade, we need to look elsewhere. If Henry is out with an injury, we can just about forget making it into the CL next season based on the current situation. Only hope is Wolcott and I am not sure he is ready for a whole season. We need a Darren Bent or Baptista, someone who is good in the air which will open up our options in for some crosses…Right now, the opposing defence just puts all 4 defenders in the box and also pushed out from goal, since there are no crosses coming in from wide areas..this in turn does not allow room for shooting in the box and the defenders are able to close down our players quicker. Losing Reyes hurts in this respect since he was the only one who could cross into the box eventhough we need to sell him. Teams have figured this out and it will get harder to score against the good ones. We have the widest pitch in the EPL but no plans to take advantage of that.

   I am beginning to believe that Wenger has Grandfatheritis..Today, we are linked with another youngster from Scotland… It boggles my mind how we have all this money for youngsters but none to solve the current situation.

   If humour is catharsis, then some ?Positive Thoughts?.

   - The young squad doesn?t have to worry about playing an undefeated season so that pressure is off now.
   - RvP is willing to bypass TH and attempt shots on goal himself.
   - Even with TH at 60% Arsenal can still have 80% of possession.
   - After 14 years of waiting for a Victory we won?t have to worry about loosing to Man City for another 10-14 yrs.
   - It was of course Uriah Rennies myopia that certain penalties were and were not called. Maybe the FA will improve their REF squad or at least make them wear glasses so this will not happen again.
   - By learning not to put up his hand in protest to an obvious foul, RvP will learn to keep his arms down and will never be called on a handball again. Shame about the yellow.
   - Arsenal doesn?t have to play in the Eastlands again this season.
   - ?Usually, I don?t come out and say stuff after the game but you can?t talk to them anymore, you can?t do anything?? Henry post match comments on Rennie. Henry has come out post-game and said something about the game.
   - If Ashley stays Hoyt will be back on the bench.
   - Rosicky got the first game out of the way so now he?ll shoot instead of ?.
   - Wenger won?t be rushed into panic buys. Even in the remaining three days of the transfer window.
   - Arsenal isn?t completely ready yet so they?ll get a week off for international friendlies.
   - Fetus Walcott moves on from being a zygote and actually contributes substantially to the team.

   There you go there are just a few reasons to be positive in that sardonic kinda way.

   I’ll keep it positive and say that we dominated quality possession and chances, hit the woodwork a number of times and less than stellar finishing robbed us of being up 3 goals before City’s PK. That said, 5 points dropped out of 6 against teams that will be happy to be mid-table at year’s end is distressing. You don’t want to say the title’s already out of grasp in August, but we surely haven’t done ourselves any favors.

   That said, I do think the squad’s quality is not the problem, though if we are really selling Reyes and Cole, I wish we’d go about it already so maybe we don’t have to scour the lower leagues for players of quality that aren’t going to be cup tied in England or Europe. As mentioned by countless others on this and the other ManCity thread, 100% of the shots not taken don’t go in. The passing is beautiful, but there has to be presence of mind to shoot and take some chances for rebounds instead of painting a picture in the box over and over again. It sort of reminds me of last year’s funk in late Dec-Feb, getting poor results against Villa, Bolton, Everton and Blackburn. While dealing with some injuries, we certainly had more talent and chances in those matches, but just didn’t bury enough of them. 7 goals against Boro was nice, but we could have used 2 each for 3 matches and we would have had nearly 12 points more in May and not desperate for bad lasagna…

   So I’ll keep my head up and pray that this poor start (result-wise, not performance) will cause some players to take some more shots. They’ll probably be surprised how many actually go in…

   I think we do need to develop a broader set of attacking styles.  We have not had a plan B for a long time.  I think Ade can be an aerial threat. I believe we do have midfielders that can cross, and they can shoot also, but we never see that because they are trying to play TH through o­n the edge of the 18. or 6.  So at the moment, that is our problem - Henry is not up to speed yet, but we still spend our effort setting him up.  In the long term its difficult to complain about the results, when even half sharp he would have buried at least a couple yesterday.  But we need to practice changing our approach mid-game if plan A isn't working.  Even if plan B doesn't work, the other team's defense can't just focus o­n plan A.

   Well, all that has been written before, what's new?  Rosicky seemed to do just fine, especially considering how long he's been playing with us.  Hoyte seems to lack judgement at this point, caught out of position and then gambling (and losing) in an effort to recover.  Maybe he was just nervous, I haven't seen him play much.  As mentioned, RvP is o­ne of the few players not afraid to shoot, but most days he passes also so I think he has the right balance.

   The most concerning thing is that in the second half, we didn't really believe.  There was some desperation, some frantic attacking, but no nerve, no conviction.  Last year we developed belief with the players we had, their backs were up against the wall.  But with players returning from injury and loan and experienced players leaving, we seem to have forgotten that there are 90 odd minutes where everything important happens.  It's a young team and partly why young teams can be inconsistent, but I think we have to rediscover that the focus and the discipline have to be there the whole game, effort alone is not enough.

   U said RvP looked sharp and ready to shoot. Yes he was always looking for that opening to shoot and did hit the post off a pass from Rosicky. But his play is currently too one-dimensional. When he gets the ball in attack, he is often looking to cut into the middle and get the ball to his left foot to take a shot. All defenders know that by now and they basically mark his left side which nullifies his effectiveness and slow down the attacking play. He is then forced to square pass it either to Eboue or someone else in the middle of the pitch. So he needs to work on a larger repertoire of movements to be a more effective striker.

   The one positive I took away from this game is the running with the ball of Cesc. He seemed to have found that deceptive burst of speed to get past players which was lacking last season. Certainly can be very effective when combined with his keen eye for a killer pass thru the opponents defence. One such ball found Henry who shot and missed the far post by inches. Besides that I did not see any other positives. We just could not convert our superiority to goals. Maybe the other silver lining is this defeat will convince Wenger that he needs to bring in reinforcements very soon.

   The positives is that it’s the same problem as last year so there are no new problems. We’re already familiar.

   Also, we need to score first. That way teams can’t play for a 0-0 draw and park the team bus in front of the goal. I only recall one league game we won last season where the opposition scored first. But, if we score first it will open teams up and we can put seven goals away.

    Here’s a positive… Arsene Wenger and the board have until Aug.31st to smarten up… and bring in the players that we so obviously need. Thats Monday Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday…
    Think he/they can do it? I hope so… staying positive… that something might actually occur.

    We are 12th in the EPL in Summer spending… with teams like Wigan actually spending more than we did. Sure, spending doesn’t mean success… but it does mean you are trying to improve. Seeing that we haven’t won yet, and we’ve played ManCity and Aston Villa, two teams mired in medocrity… we all know thats trouble.

    4 days.
    After that… forget it. We’ll have no chance at all in the league, and it will be the same hit or miss team that we watched last season… and another titanic struggle to get TOP 4.
    It doesn’t have to be that way. It simply doesn’t.

    Reyes and Cole.
    Tired of hearing about it.
    Do something about it… or PLAY THEM. One or the other. Enough talking. Sell them or play them.

    Frustrating first 2 games, we all wanted to see a good start to the season, our team relies on rhythm more than most and a winning start helps create rhythm.

    In the games themselves, nothing we haven?t seen from Arsenal for years?
    ?pulverize teams in attacking play, fail to finish, sucker punch.

    The good?.
    1. Lotsa possession, lotsa attack, we were all over em
    2. Rosicky: Some really nice touches, looks to me like he will fit easily into Arsenals style of play?subject to an EPL tune-up.
    3. The right: Hleb and Eboue started well.
    4. Fabregas: awesome, truly awesome.
    5. Gilberto & our defence: Overall I was happy with their effort. They got put under pressure by our inability to score. But it did help remind me of the stoic qualities that Sendy and Flamster brought to the back-end of last season.

    The bad?.
    6. Goal shy
    7. Henry is not fit, afterburners aren?t working, sights out of alignment.
    8. Often someone else steps up to the plate and scores goals?currently no one is?someone must.
    9. Ade can look either interesting or awkward, recently we?ve seen the latter.
    10. The left has nothing?a flat Henry, a new (unfit?) Rosicky, a stand-in Hoyte (see point 13 below)

    The ugly?.

    12. Eboue: What?s with folk venting their spleen on Eboue?. unbelievable. He was a revelation last year?.an absolute revelation?.gave us momentum on the right we?ve never had but now that results don?t go our way we throw our Eboue doll out of the cot as well.
    13. Cole and Reyes?.I try not to think of the ten?s of thousands of pounds those 2 suck from Arsenal each week

    I would not trade Eboue for any RB that I can think of but he made some shockingly bad passes and failed to pressure his opposite number.

    Accepted ctpa, Eboue’s game lost composure as the game went along.
    Dunno why, maybe he’s got speed wobbles, not uncommon after a rip-roaring debut season, maybe he was trying too hard and lost a bit of poise.
    I do think though, if we’d scored a goal before conceding, we’d have been likely to score 3 or 4.
    Not an excuse or wishful thinking
    …more a belief built on watching the psyche of this team over many years.

    I didn’t see the game, so I can’t comment on it. But there is reason to fear as we are worse off than last season at this point. Draw against Villa and defeat at Man City is worse than two defeats at Chelsea and Boro. Atleast last season we won our first game. Vieira left last season, but this time Pires, Campbell and Bergkamp have left. And we have Cole and Reyes to add to the misery this time.

    Wenger has 4 days to change the personnel involved. After that, he can only change team tactics. I wait and watch.

    No worries, friends. We’ve got some new people that need to be worked into the squad and I think this process takes time. I think Rosicky is going to be brilliant, and Hleb is equally amazing, little Theo Walcott, well what can we say. The kid has done really well. I think this season will be something like last years. I just hope we finish above Tottenham, and that we qualify for Europe.

    i cant wait for the transfer window, so that cole and reyes can be “trapped” at arsenal. they can then both go next summer, no problem.

    if reyes goes, wenger will definitely not replace him…so i pray he doesnt. but reyes is absolutely VITAL for our counterattacking game. without him, there is nobody else i can see bringing the ball out with speed from the defence … or those long distance, accurate passes…. he is also our assist champ … so despite what a lot of people think, we need him…infact we desperately NEED him.

    if we can keep cole and reyes, and somehow manage to get gallas, we?ll be good to go.

    can?t gallas buy himself out of his contract (he is on is last year and over 28, and i read somewhere that this is possible, though im not sure) … we can then re-imburse him his money when he comes to us on a free?? is that legal, anybody knows?? LOL!

    as for the rumors:
    reo-coker, i know for one that he is a tough-tackler. he was also wimbledon captain at 19 and west ham captain at 21, and is currently U-21 captain. that record shows he is a LEADER even at such an age. he would be far more useful for us than flamini or song … surely. and hes available for 3 million. wenger wake up!

    as for the scottish youngster. i dont see the point of getting another young reserve striker when we have bendtner.

    anyways, cole says one more season. that is ok with me. wenger should speak with reyes and ask him for one more season as well, maybe even ask henry to talk with him. next year they can both go if they wish.

    hopes:
    - cole and reyes stay
    - gallas for 5 million, reo-coker for 3 million = that is 8 million in total.

    combined with the 6 million for rosicky, that is 14 million.
    even by arsenals standards this is very cheap!

    There is no way you can buy Gallas and Reo-Coker for 8 mil. How can you buy Gallas for 5 mil. when they have already rejeceted our 5 mil offer. So he would cost more. And Reo-Coker for 3 mil.? You must be joking, right? He would cost us at least 8-10 mil, cos he is the leader of this West Ham team and also he is English, and we all know that to buy English players you have too go a “little bit” higher with your offer. So for 3 mil. we can buy a Cygan, a Flamini type of player, certanly not Roe-Coker.

    As for Cole and Reyes… well I agree with your comments for Reyes, he is a vital player in our team and will be missed, in fact we already miss him. And if Cole stays for another year, the next summer his price will go down. He will have one year remaining of his contract and we will sell him for no more than 10 mil. So better sell him now for 16-20 mil., than the next summer for much lower fee.

    Finishing is always an issue. … many of us thinks that finishing is easy but in fact it takes a great fit striker. A calm and smart player can finsih. Collecting garbage is also hard and it takes players like RVN or Drogba or Bobie to score … ?

    When you have 8 guys infront of you, shooting a ball is not easy. It takes more than Theo or Cesce to score. Henry does not want to make himself look silly, so he does not try. RVP took o­ne, but it found the post … lets give credits to the deffence and the Keeper for keeping the angel close …the keeper did a great job against Arsenal.

    Rosisky's 1v1 chance, we have to give the credit for the keeper. When Thomas took the ball all the way, then found himself lucky to get the ball back, he was in unfocused sitiuation and the keeper did the best, close the angle delay him till some help?come … It takes a to be a great stirker to score these goals.

    Its also a mental issue !!!! IF the team work o­n it now … we can go all the way after the most dissapointing start in Arsenal History to?become?a?great?season.

    See if we tied and we lost because we palyed bad, then I will be worried. But o­nce the internal isseues are solved, and if keep we Cole and bring some strenght to our backline… the mental issue can be solved and we will score more ..

    as for gallas, his contract is worht 3 million a year. and he is in his last year and over 28 in age. he CAN buy out his contract….which is worth 3million. though i am not sure if it is legal for us to re-imburse him back his money if he joins us.

    chelsea only declined the offer because they didnt want to sell him or they wanted to have more bargaining power in the cole scenario.

    as for reo-coker, that is the amount being pushed around, 3 to 5 million. his normal market value is around 10 million, but sources say he has a clause in his contract…which allows him to go for around 3 to a top -3 club, while another rumour source says its actually top-4 club….
    its all rumors…we’ll see. either way he is said to be more interested in staying in london (arsenal) than going north to manchester.

    We missed Jose bigger than **AYE CARUMBA**(censored) on Saturday. Like I said when the rumors started, we really don’t need to lose Jose. People have been critical but he’s still very young. He’s not going anywhere just yet but we need him to continue to develop. If he can stay focused then he’s going to be a great freaking player.

    He hasn’t improved in the two and a half years he has been at Arsenal(he’s probably gone backwards) so I don’t know what makes you think he is going to develop into a world-beater(he is 23 next month after all). He has no footballing intelligence so he will never get any better. He suits playing for small club like Seville where he can turn it on once a month and no one will care.

    Wenger wastes him on the wing anyway. Up-front he would have made a difference on Saturday but on the wing he would have spent the whole time falling over and trying ambitious flick ons and one two’s.

    Can’t wait to see the back of him.

    Stag,

    You can’t have it both ways. If Arsenal are out of the title race having dropped five points in two games in August, then Villa are championship contenders having taken seven points from three games.

    If you think being third in the table after three teams gives a false picture of an Aston Villa team mired in mediocrity, then being fourth from bottom having played a game less could also give a false picture of Arsenal.

    Which is it??? Pick one option only. Can you do that???

    BTW Cole played tonight in the reserves.

    In both games we lacked sharpness in front of goal and it has cost us five points.

    Yes the defence made two mistakes in two games and conceded two goals. That is not unusual for the start of any season especially when a number of first-choice are missing.

    The biggest problem has been up front. However, it is early days. Let us see if anything happens this week on the transfer front but no need to cry in our milk yet.

    One positive was the number of chances created, the improvement in Van Persie’s teamwork albeit only incrementally and most impressively Fabregas seems to have gained strength and can now go past players with the ball at his feet.

    ANR has Mascherano’s agent being sighted at Emirates Stadium and two more sources are regurgitating the Buffon rumor. I saw Mascherano get a red card against Boca Jrs early in the first half. A silly challenge that reflected a lost of nerve in THE game of the Apertura season.

    Fab was fabulous…the only additional thing he could have done was scored a goal…but he left his superman cape in the locker.

    Lesson, The Sun is woeful even by football writing standards, if you expect neither accuracy or truth you won’t be disappointed.

    Fabregas impressed me with his new found strenght. He can now be challenged , keep his drbble, keep his head up and look to make a play. Adebayor shows the same strenght. Can we give it up for Kanu, he was the man against Middleborough. Like fine aging wine and he was not hesitant about shooting.

    Always chosen for his country and always scores nice goals for them during the run up to the WC. The Spanish coach (whose name I dare not speak) always brought on Joaquin when he wanted a wing during the actual tournament. I guess he felt that El Rey failed Motivation 101.

    Fabregas put Henry through on goal about 5 times and he jammed them all up. Henry had our best chances. Fab did the same thing in the world cup and received due praise because his teamates scored. Henry didn’t. Bottom line. Maybe he needs to go back to wearing Nike shoes.
