Arsenal-ManCity….Positive thoughts???? Interview with John and Matt Simmons - Authors of Winning Together
Aug 28

Jose Antonio Reyes has been quoted by the Spanish press as saying that his Arsenal career is all but over. However, most reports indicate that no suitable bids have been made. In fact, the gaffer was quoted recently as saying, “It?s like you wanting to marry Miss World and she doesn?t want you. I can try to help you but if she does not want to marry you what can I do?”

Laugh all we want at Wenger’s witty remarks, but the more that Reyes blabs, the more his value diminishes. In fact, Atletico Madrid made a bid that Wenger conisdered “insulting.” However, how much longer can he hold out until he’ll be forced to sell Reyes at a cut rate, just to offload the simpleton?

I suggest that Wenger fine Reyes every time another one of these quotes comes out. He is still under contract with Arsenal, and this type of behavior is just as bad as meeting with the enemy at a hotel lounge. Perhaps by keeping a lid on things, Arsene can keep the loss he’s going to have to incur down to a minimum.

I agree that Wenger definitely needs to have a sit-down with Jose and tell him he needs to be as professional and respectful to Arsenal as the team has been to him. Arsenal paid a lot of money for him and he just recently signed a new long-term contract. No one put a gun to his head and forced him to do that. It was at Arsenal that he got into the national team.

For him to want to leave is understandable but he needs to understand that if no one comes for him he must still remain professional. For teams in Spain that can afford him to still want him, his football still has to be of a high quality. He also has to consider his place in the national team. Okay, he’s expressed his desire to leave but as long as he’s with Arsenal, he needs to be committed to Arsenal. It shows professionalism and people will respect that. The last thing he needs is Real Madrid to lose intrest because he’s being a baby or fans booing him for being an assclown.

I’ve said Reyes was not the smartest dude since the day he joined. Even in his native spanish he can’t really make sense when he speaks, similar to my posts here!!! jajaja

I agree with you in that he must me fined and I don’t see a difference between this and what Ash did. Ash kept it quiet to some extent, and this douche bag talks and talks and talks…

at the end of the day, i don’t care if you are zinedine ronaldinho adams, if you speak like that, i don’t want you in my club

    J?dete t?o!!!

    peace

AGREED! This boy is a clown…

  4. DannyT Says:

Nicholas Anelka Mk II, and his career will probably go the same way he’s so thick.

  5. Andez Says:

I have faith on the majority of our young guns, with two exceptions - Jose Reyes and Justin Hoyte.

Hoyte is what I call “a player with NO POSITION”. He’s not quick enough as a full back, does not have the positional sense to make up for his lack of pace neither. Probably he’s natural position is central half, yet he lack of strength playing there neither.

As for Jose Reyes, he just simply doesnt have the football brain to play in an Arsenal team which requires their players to have a quick thinking in terms of passing and movement.

I wouldn’t mind to see Reyes goes. ‘Cos if anything, it will open the door for young Walcott.

From what I’ve seen so far, what Reyes can do, Walcott is not that far away.

In terms of pace, Walcott is even quicker.

In terms of dribbling, Walcott may not have as much tricks, yet he’s very assured with the ball on his feet. The match vs Man City, we saw Walcott ran with the ball comfortably.

Most importantly, Walcott is more DIRECT. And at the age of 17, Theo already look more matured and intelligent in his decision on when to pass/cross/dribble/make the run than Reyes.

I really hope Walcott will live up to his hype and potential, and as quickly as possible. Despite only seeing him played 3 games, this kid look level-head hasn’t he?

Steve G said in his book “Walcott did not has the RIGHT to be there (with England in World Cup)”, Theo never said a word. And from what I’ve heard, he even cut short of his holiday returning to Arsenal early in order to work on his game. It’s something refreshing to hear among today’s footballer. And that’s exactly the kind of ATTITUDE I hope to see in an young Arsenal player - I WILL KEEP WORKING HARD, and LET OTHERS TO SPEAK.

  6. MikeK Says:

I agree to a point re: Anelka. See, Anelka let his brothers do all of the talking, and thus all of the damage. Reyes is doing it all himself. Equally stupid, but debatable as to which is more annoying.

  7. DannyT Says:

Let’s face it, Justin Hoyte is a f*cking crap footballer. He is not a Premiership player, he is a lower league player. Even Sunderland didn’t want him on the cheap, he’s totally out of his depth at Arsenal and will never make the grade.

  8. TH14Cesc4 Says:

I always thought Reyes was better than Van Persie- I always thought Reyes’ through balls to Henry were fantastic. I think it will hurt to not have him, and his leaving will be a disappointment. Unfortunately, it seems nothing can be done, as, same as Ashley Cole, it just pains him to play for Arsenal, and he can’t possibly play at his best when he’s constantly disgruntled. It’s a bad situation.

Hopefully Theo will take his place.

  9. tAi Says:

Reyes….please tell( or beg the heck of it) those spanish teams to match arsenal’s value for you IF U REALLY wanna go. or else shut up and honor your freaking contract. We need the whole arsenal contigent to be together now. Bad start needs cover up and play good.

  10. Sheed Says:

I still think that Reyes is a better player than RvP. If Reyes is Henry’s partner in the attack we will see more of his enormous potential. He is wasting his talent on the left wing, he is more like second striker.

  11. Sheed Says:

Hey Mike, where is the Atletico Madrid logo on the suit? :)

  12. Sheed Says:

Because our players can’t put the ball in the back of the net, I thought maybe we should play with our Ladies in the EPL. They certanly know how to score, they put 14 past Fulham Ladies :)

  13. SachinG Says:

Great poster Mike :) I suggest another Jim Carrey movie poster might also provide inspiration ‘Me, Myself & Irene’ which would translate to ‘Me, Myself & Madrid’ or something along those lines. Sometimes his comments contradict each other, and you are not sure of which Reyes said those…he might be fighting within himself ‘London..no, Madrid..no, London…no Madrid..” I used to really like the guy despite his on-field flops but right now, enough is enough!

  14. TH14Cesc4 Says:

  15. MikeK Says:

Sorry that I can’t take credit for it myself. Found it in one of the BigSoccer threads!

  16. irishgunner Says:

I notice that Ashley Cole played for the reserves tonight as did Adebayor, Aliadiere, Flamini, Song and Walcott. Is that Cole’s last appearance in an Arsenal shirt? Do we care?

No room for Reyes - still injured or gone? Reyes is not the sharpest tool in the box which is why he has got himself where he is. I would be sorry to see him go but homesickness is harder to get over than a broken leg.

Hoyte is getting some serious criticism which I think is unfair. At best he is seventh choice in defence (after Lauren, Toure, Senderos, Clichy, Djourou and Eboue), at worst ninth choice (after Cygan and Cole if he stays). When you look at those that occupy seventh to ninth choice in other teams, I don’t think we can do a lot better.

Utd have Ferdinand, Neville, Heinze, Silvestre, Vidic and Brown as their top six defenders. Next are O’Shea who plays more in midfield, Evra who is supposed to be leaving and Eagles (is he a defender?). Nothing there much better than Hoyte, maybe just a little more experienced.

Chelsea have Terry, Carvalho, Ferreira, Bridge, Boulahrouz and Geremi. Then comes Huth (on the way out) and Hilario who I think is a defender as well as Gallas in the Cole category. Not a lot there in the seventh to ninth position either.

Being realistic we are not going to get any better defenders in to take seventh or eighth place in the roster. And don’t give me the rotation theory. No successful team rotates their defence except for injury or suspension.

  17. Mazza Says:

It’s just become clear. The player who Wenger should splash out big time before the window is Carlos Tevez. A player who can get shot off when surrounded by defenders. Perfect when we do our pass-the-ball-to-death trick in the box. Great close control. Him and Mascherano would be too perfect. What a lift it would give the players as well. However Wenger doesn’t seem to think about morale anymore.

  18. Sheed Says:

Eagles is a midfielder and Hilario is a goalkeeper.

I see your point in this post, we have better 7th choice defenders than Chelsea and ManUtd., but if you compare the players that are first choice we are behind them. Chelsea have Ferreira, Carvalho, Terry and Bridge without Gallas, ManUtd. have Neville, Ferdinand, Brown/Vidic/Silvestre/Heinze and Heinze/Evra/Silvestre and we have without Cole a defense with Eboue/Lauren, Toure, Senderos and Clichy. So they have a better defenders than us that’s for sure.

  19. Mazza Says:

That’s funny. Just checked the The Sun website and apparently we are going to bid ?17 million for Tevez. Spooky. Let’s hope my thoughts were transmitted to Wenger ;^)

  20. gerard Says:

I can sum Reyes up simply by using this old proverb.

The empty vessel makes the most noise!

This guy is definitely a candidate for his picture next to the word stupid in the dictionary. After last year with the papers and Madrid rumours, then the Henry remarks with Spain’s coach and his lack of comments about the issue, then Madrid again and pictures of him reading Marca (?). Now all this about anyone in Spain but Arsenal in England.

What a baby, grow up kid and let go off mommy’s apron strings. I mean is he still nursing or what?

Sure Wenger should fine him but were it up to me he’d be wearing that stupid Arsenal Barney like mascot uniform on game day and not the red and white.

I think the boss is doing the right thing in getting every penny he’s worth for the club because he’s not worth much more than the money they’ll get for him. I find the whole thing has gone from the absurd to the abstract. It’s gotten past the point of making me laugh, now I just want it to stop.

Honestly, if ever the saying the elevator doesn’t go to the top floor, or the lights are on but nobody is home applied Reyes would be it.

  21. gunner4life Says:

Wenger should have got rid of Reyes last season when he was not performing consistently for the past 2 seasons. The signs were already there and discussed on this forum but yet, Wenger chose not to do anything about it. And we now have 3 days left before the close of the transfer window. Now Arsenal is forced to sell Reyes at a reduced price or have a player mourning about life in England until the next transfer window in January. Frankly I blame Wenger for not taking action earlier and jeopardising Arsenal’s start to the season. He had the chance to fix these problems during summer but chose to put on tinted glasses instead.

  22. djholmes Says:

i can’t handle this anymore. just sell this ass****!!! i dun care. 8 mill whatever. hes not even worth that. hes abosulely rubbish. arsenal is possibily the most frustrating team to support. wenger needs to sell people like reyes and coles stragith away. and then get players in! why the hell doesn’t put up a fight for campbell? edu? vieira? he don’t care about price with them. and they didn’t really want to leave. im sure he could have convinced campbell who is dominating at portsmouth to stay. kanu? 4 goals already

  23. stag133 Says:

I would be surprised if EITHER Cole or Reyes left Arsenal.
I think we are going to be stuck with both… two players who have no desire to be on our team… apparently because we don’t like what other teams are offering…
well, of course they aren’t offering as much as we’d like… they Do NOT want to play for us. That means we are either STUCK with players who don’t want to be here, or we sell them for less than the multi-millions we imagine they’re worth.
We’ll be stuck with them. 3 days and counting…
(please Arsene or the Arsenal board, just do it… sell them and bring in replacements before the season goes to hell)

  24. joshuad Says:

I like Tevez but you can keep Mascherano. He was okay but not that great to me in the world cup considering how much he’d cost. Gilberto has been pretty good since the spring, especially against Barcelona, and I believe he’s looking to lead more by example. He was excellent against Man City and saved us from being bottom now with a last minute goal against Villa. Do you believe we’re in 17th place? Boro, my pick for relegation this year, is higher than us.

  25. Andez Says:

Stag, if Arsenal sell Reyes and Cole with a cut cost price, just for the sake of selling them, guess what WILL HAPPEN next?….

The next time, when another Arsenal star decides grass is greener elsewhere, all he has to do is just to make the noise, tells whichever club wants to sign them come and get me. U don’t have the cash? No worry, I am just going to make a statement - I will never play for Arsenal again. The club will have no choice to sell me even if you bid for a ridaculous fee…

This is a PRINCIPLE Arsenal MUST HOLD FIRM, even if it means Cole and Reyes sit out for an entire season. Surely, it’s a lose lose situation and the club will suffer a loss as well. But looking at the big picture, the club MUST HOLD THEIR GROUND.

And first thing first, this was not Arsenal’s false at the first place. It was Cole and Reyes wanted to leave, not Arsenal wanted to get rid of them. Why should we let them get their ways, and why should we give in to them? I don’t care if we have to eventually let them go through free-transfer, the club just simply can’t give in. Our we would be setting ourselves a dangerous example, and other players would not even think twice to attempt make a move when the money man calls.

  26. DannyT Says:

It’s very true, what if Man Utd had sold Ronaldo at cut price after the world cup because the little sh*t was whining about going back to Manchester. Now the boy has been made to stay and is happy has larry.

You can’t just give in to these players. Arsenal paid a lot of money for Reyes and he signed a new contract only last year, why did he do that if he’s homesick?

Arsenal are entitled to get back what they paid for him or just under at the very least, the boy still has a lot of potential. Real Madrid were obviously looking at him but he was not a major priority - their way of operating is to illegally unsettle the player and then try and buy him cut price. Atletico’s derisory offer was just trying to take advantage of the same situation.

If Atletico are offering peanuts then we can get peanuts for him when his contract runs out anyway. So if he doesn’t want to play for Arsenal he can play for the reserves and train with the reserves where he cannot have a negative impact on the team. Unless someone makes a serious bid, it’s really up to him.

Homesick my arse, the weather - my arse, he has his whole family around him, look at Fabregas - he joined at 16, not a whiff of complaint.

  27. Andez Says:

Exactly. Not just Cesc, look at Senderos, Eboue, Clichy, Djourou, Aliadiere, Lupoli, Bendtner and many other young Gunners, they all came to a new country at a tender age. And almost all of them did not have the luxury to play first team football from the off like Reyes did. Those kids went to England, with an uncertain future (not sure if they have the chance to make it or not), and surely earned much less than Reyes when they were playing for the youth teams….

Sometimes I wonder, would Reyes ever felt ashamed of himself when he let the words “home sick” coming out of his mouth? All he needs just to take a look of all the other youngsters around him.

  28. nipuna Says:

The Cole and Reyes stories make for an interesting comparison.

Initially, Cole was the big villain after his comments in the book. Reyes was playing everything from the background, always officially claiming allegiance to the club.

Now with just a few days left for the transfer deadline, Cole is playing for the reserves, while Reyes is saying “I will never play in England again”.

Who is the bigger idiot? Seems like a close call. :-)

  29. chalfie Says:

OK, it is clear that the whole Reyes and Cole saga is affecting the rest of the team and the way they perform.

I think we all agree if they are unhappy with the club they should leave.

I think everyone would like to see a few players join us.

I think everyone would like to see us with a EPL game!!!

However things are not as easy as this, there is no point giving away players for less than market value. Remember that there is a business behind the team and club and they need to get the best price for their players and purchase players at the correct level.

We can now see where we have problems in the team, and perhaps it would be an idea if we actually knew which formation we were playing.

Hleb looks afwul, which is strange as he did not go to the world cup, and was on form towards the end of last season, perhaps he has a knock.

Rosicky, looks off the pace, and I think this is affecting Hoyte at left back, as Rosicky is not tracking back.

I would give Henry a bit of a rest, play him as a sub, or just 70 mins a game, until he gets his fitness back.

Van Persie looks sharp, as does Fabregas, and Flamini looks ready for the season.

Why not start Aliadere up front in the next game, he needs to prove he can still do it, and if not he needs to be shipped out.

Walcott, needs time, a reserve game last night and a U21 game, should improve that for AFC.

Lastly, Freddie, you have the spirit all other players need, you need to play CM in a 4 3 3, and we will be great again.

  30. Kiwi Says:

Agree Andez, DannyT et al. As tempting as it is to react and cut the problem loose we will send out all the wrong signals. Look at Man Utd with Ronaldo, look at Bayern Munich with Hargreaves, look at Chelsea with Gallas, top teams don?t let guys go easy unless they choose to jettison them. In any event?Wenger and the Board are hardly weak in any sense of the word.

If they stay, once the transfer deadline passes Cole and Reyes will be repositioning themselves to get back into the starting team asap?they will be overwhelmed by the need to play?what else are they to do? Watch a year of their career go down the toilet? Cole already saw last year evaporate, he?s 25 and in the prime of his career, 2 crap years in a row? Nah. If he stays the pressure goes back on him.

  31. Kiwi Says:

Interesting, just read the latest edition of Bayern v Hargreaves. Basically Bayern say “your staying son” and Hargreaves via his agent appear to be accepting that.

Not fair??? Get off the grass. These young guys are treated like kings and get paid huge sums whether they are injured or play well or play badly or pout or write nasty books. The other side to the deal is that the clubs ‘own’ their licence to play professionally. That’s life guys. You want the glory and the bucks you sacrifice your freedom of movement.

  32. Andez Says:

Kiwi, actually I think the players have NO RIGHT to say NOT FAIR. Take Reyes, he signed a long term contract last season. The meaning of the “CONTRACT” is by no mean to just simply restricted the players’ FREEDOM OF MOVEMENT like they are so often complaining. Because, say Reyes signed a six years deal, if he get a career-ending injury on his first year, Arsenal will still have to pay off his remaining contract.

So the CONTRACT actually protect a player’s interest. So they get the benefit of it. While you have the benefit, it’s within your dignity and responsibility to honor your contract, under ANY SOFT OF CIRCUMSTANCE. Because the club will have to honor your contract under ANY SOFT OF CIRCUMSTANCE. Things work both way.

  33. Kiwi Says:

    Agreed.

I think the contract favours the player because they get paid no matter what, the ‘quality of service’ the club gets in return is unknown. And as we often see the player can agitate for a move at any time. In such a case most clubs buckle siting “it’s not worth keeping an unhappy player”.

  34. SassyMonkey Says:

Antonio, STFU and ship your parents back to Spain. Then you can start growing up.

  35. chalfie Says:

I think the whole Reyes thing is weird.

I mean if he wanted to leave, we could have sold him straight after the world cup.

He has been picked for the Spanish national team but could not make the first XI or the reserves.

Leaving it late is not a good move for the player or any club, buying or selling.

Cole has been up front by saying he wants to leave, but that does not wash with most supporters.

By playing in the reserves, he is actually stopping a younger player from getting a game. However if he is staying he needs to re-sign or make it clear to his team mates that he will give 100%.

If he does stay, what happens when we play Chelsea, will he go missing? Will he be picked?

  36. ScottyUS Says:

    Great post, Mike.

While I could see improvement in Reyes’ game, particularly with corners, set pieces and excellent long range passes from midfield, he’s part of the reason we’re stuttering…and not just because his want-away attitutude is unsettling to the club.

Reyes represents the soft kind of player that The Arsenal have too much of. We have no man streak. Our manager let’s these kids run around the playground in hopes that they will mature on their own and fight with fire when its needed, but the off-field contractual stuff goes to show you that a few of these punks won’t respect the club when it comes down to it.

We need some nasty. Some bite. We need a few guys that will bully the ball into the net and make defenses shake when they have no choice but to sit back and hit on the counter. As it stands, we’re boys. And while we’re talented and need time to mature, there’s still the sense that no one will grow fangs with their experience.

I’m not talking about experience on the field that we need, the boys are getting their chances. But if you’re not ruthless, you might as well play exhibitions because that’s what our games are looking like. Perish the thought, but if we were concerned that people wouldn’t come to watch The Arsenal if they played route 1 ugly football, the same could be true if we don’t start finding a way to play “assertive” one-touch football. Pretty is great, but its nothing without power.

Its time to take the gloves off.

  37. chalfie Says:

The real question is, do Arsenal need the cash from the sale of Reyes to make the signings the team really needs?

From the way Arsenal are acting, I would say yes…

So leaving him in the reserves, means we cant add to the squad….

  38. annagassan Says:

Carlos Tevez has that bite. Tevez and Henry up front with RvP supporting. Sounds like Tevez might be the boy to stick it in the back of the net like Wrighty.

  39. Anonymous Says:

more likely the sun were struggling for a story and read your comment!

  40. DannyT Says:

It’s a shame that Reyes has the brain the size of a pea. He obviously thought Real Madrid wanted him so bad they would pay big money - he imagined it was a dead cert. In fact Real were not all that bothered at all and offered a measly amount - and when that was turned down they completely lost interest. Talk about naive.

I reckon he’s too scared to come back to Arsenal, because he has been shooting his mouth off like an idiot and is probably worried what the other players might think. He’ll just have to stay and face them, learn his lesson. If you want clubs to pay BIG money for you, you have to play like a BIG player.

Personally I don’t beleive he is homesick, that’s all bluff.

  41. Anonymous Says:

Have I missed something? Has anyone actually seen a tape of Reyes saying these things? Or are we taking Marca as gospel these days? Call me a doubting Thomas, but until I see the guy on Marca TV saying he never wants to play in England again, I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt.

Sure Reyes may want go back to Spain, but I like the way Wenger is handling this, he’s letting it go to the end game, where there are no more excuses. Either we get a good fee or Jose can tell mama to go ‘back’ herself and act like a professional. more than few people don’t rate this kid, but he’s probably the main reason we just about managed to hold our own on the left hand side last year, he was on his motorbike up and down that left hand side, doing half of Flamini’s defensive work. You don’t rate Reyes, watch the games against Real and Juventus.

What would be much better is if UEFA/FIFA stepped in and stopped clubs like Real and Chelsea tapping players up and telling them to threaten to go on strike to decrease their transfer value. Real and Chelsea might think they are Miss World, but I wouldn’t touch them with yours.

  42. gerard Says:

I think Reyes may very well be the highest paid “CLOWN” in the world. If he goes or if he stays has indeed become tiresome if not tedious.

Yes the club needs to recoup its maximum assets for their investment as Reyes is definitely equity in a business sense, if the club sells of its equity against it’s debts what kind of business would it be but a poor one.

Like Cole though, when I watch them on the pitch I’m not thinking about having a conversation with them on the merits of Derrida’s Post-Modern Deconstructionism but how they play the game. Reyes has already shown that he’s not exactly a “rocket surgeon” or a “brain scientist” for that matter. Cole’s off field intent is driven by greed and he has a propensity to shoot himself in the “footie” writing nasty “kiss and tells” before he’s even traded, doh!

I think that both of them have been manipulated by other clubs and may have some psychological argument to plead “victim” but I completely disagree with their skewed sense that Arsenal is “Persecutor”.

In the end though, come Thursday they may still be members of our beloved club. In many ways I’d rather Cole be at Ashburton Grove than at Mercedes Marxist Central. Reyes, well I don’t know anymore… he’s good but the fact Real or other Spanish clubs aren’t swooping in to rescue his plea must tell us something.

  43. joshuad Says:

This sh-t is getting old. Jose and Ashley aren’t going anywhere. Let’s talk about something else.

Who’s going to win player of the year? Of course you have your Ronaldinho and Cannavaro fans but what about Lehmann? He’s got the best argument for a keeper since Kahn the year Bayern last won the CL. Kahn shot himself in the foot when England put 5 past him in that World Cup qualifier and Liverpool did the same in the Super Cup. If Lehmann doesn’t self-destruct he could be in the mix.

Personally I believe that Riquelme is the best player in the world right now but he plays for a small team so he won’t win. That guy is so cold. He always wants the ball and never loses it. It would be interesting to see him at Arsenal but we’ve got Fab. I hope Fab is that good when he’s Riquelme’s age (and still at Arsenal). Riquelme’s an artist and could play in any league. I wouldn’t mind seeing him at Arsenal.

Someone mentioned Tevez for Arsenal. That’s someone that wouldn’t give a crap about Henry’s mean faces. He’s all about playing the game. Henry would have to respect that guy. His movement off the ball is very good. Tevez and van Persie would work out beautifully. Henry would have to get with the program because neither one of them would care about the mean-mugging.

I just wanted to talk about something else. Y’all never-mind me.

And why can’t I vote? This thing is telling me I’ve already voted today and I haven’t even voted yet on this poll; today, yesterday, or ever.

  44. stag133 Says:

    Player of the Year?
Right now… I’d say KANUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU is in the lead!!!!!!
Maybe we can get him back and we can get rid of that imitation, Adebeyor!
    Haaaaaaaaaaa!

  45. SCJonathan Says:

Player of the year? I would like to think Henry has a chance. Leading scorer in the prem, got Arsenal to the CL final( even though he did not have a great game in the final), had a good WC and made it to the final, and he has been runner up twice. I am not sure when the votes are cast, but if Arsenal snaps out of the early season slump, I think he has a chance.

  46. ctpa Says:

According to the Guardian Unlimited, Atletico Madrid are ready to get serious with their El Rey offer: (http://football.guardian.co.uk/News_Story/0,,1860801,00.html?gusrc=rss&feed=5). Wenger's (and Dein's) hard nose stance means Arsenal won't be selling at a loss. My only problem (and maybe Arsenal's as well) with this offer is the 4mil in installments over 4 years pending CL qualifications. Why should we be charitable. I'd tell AM 18mil up front and 2mil deferred or they can save their 11mil and go with their plan B (Requiero). Arsenal risking 4mil on their hope for CL is bogus. Suppose Fernando Torres blows out his knee, then Arsenal takes a financial hit.

    We'll see.

As for as Cashley is concern, Arsenal are still in the driver's seat even if there are no other suitors. Chelsea's craving for the “best left back in the world” is almost palpable. Their spend no matter what the cost appproach to player aquisition have turn them into a junkie looking for that next high. Wenger and Dein know this. Mourinho's “not one pound more” (over 16mil) evidently went to 20mil. Cashley will play well for us because he needs to maintain his market value.

  47. nipuna Says:

Just two days to go and there is no sign of signing any player. That’s worrying me a lot more than Cole and Reyes.

  48. nipuna Says:

By the way, Reyes has been declared “perfectly fit” to play for Spain. This is a repeat of Cole. Unfit for your club, but ready for your country.

  49. joshuad Says:

Maybe I spoke too soon. Reyes may be leaving. If Athletico meet Arsenal’s asking price then he may be gone. We will miss Jose but I wish him the best. He’s going to be a great player.

  50. joshuad Says:

I thought Portsmouth would be strong with James, Campbell, and Kanu all coming in but second in the table while conceding no goals is incredible. I figured they would be in the top eight but I figured Arsenal would be in the top 8 too. Haaaaaaa!

  51. joshuad Says:

He does have an arguement but he’s got to pull his head out of his arse and get about 10 league goals before Christmas and play well in Europe. Problem is he has games like the one against Man City a bit too frequently and that’s why he’s never won it. There’s no way you can have a striker get that many chances and miss so many and still make him player of the year.

If Saturday was just a one off day then I could understand. We’ve been watching Henry for years and we know it’s not. He gets many chances because of his pace and the quality service but he’s got to be more clinical. If you give Sheva or Crespo Henry’s pace and service, they’d score ATLEAST 40 league goals a year. It’s a fact difficult to ignore and that’s why he hasn’t won. How can he win POTY when he’s not even the best striker?

He should be up there with Pele and Maradona with his physical abilities and playing for Arsenal. But his passing and finishing sometimes lets him down. It’s a shame.

  52. joshuad Says:

Wenger just says they’re not fit to justify not playing them. The sooner the team can get used to playing without them the better for the team. No sense in having them in the team when they’re probably leaving.

  53. nipuna Says:

True. But if in two days time they are still with us, they have no choice but to play for us.

  54. nipuna Says:

If Chelsea and Madrid (Real or Atletico) make last minute bids which match Arsenal’s valuation, then we will be have lots of money but no new players. Is that preferable to keeping both at Arsenal? I am not sure.

  55. Anonymous Says:

according to jose’s favourite paper and all round messenger of truth, Marca, Jose is not fit, he has an injury to the ‘pubis’ - sounds sore.

  56. nipuna Says:

By the way, if Reyes leaves, should it be Ribery or Saviola or Tevez?

Ribery is like for like but expensive.

Saviola is cheap but not perfect for a winger.

Tevez is expensive and great but not a winger.

  57. Kiwi Says:

Hmmmm, it’s all a bit grim, no new signings, Cole & Reyes slugging it out for the dickwhacker of the month award, no new signings, a draw and a loss, no new signings, a trial for a Scottish no-name dunno-position kid, and did I mention no new signings?

I sense a lot of groaning and nashing of teeth.

Well here’s something to cheer you up…Bolton have signed their “smallest gamble” Nic Anelka.
Yip, Nic whose seen more clubs than Tiger Woods is back bringing his own unique brand of headcaseness to the EPL.

Now here’s the quote, showing Nic’s passion for his new venture…”I’m here because Bolton came first, I think. I know Manchester, I know Sam Allardyce is a big manager and he spoke to me.”

Insightful…musings into the mind of nano Nic

Here’s the question…how long will he stay at Bolton?
    Can he last 18 months?

  58. ScottyUS Says:

While I still think we’re a few signings away from what we really need to make a decent stretch of the season, I’m more concerned about getting our existing team up to snuff. We’re outplaying the opposition and dropping points.

    Finishing.

  59. nipuna Says:

Good point. But AW has just two days to add to the team. To improve the existing one, he has a lot more time.

  60. DannyT Says:

?8m for a bloke who’s had more clubs than Nick Faldo looks like a “pretty big” gamble to me. He’s gone to Bolton, football’s dustbin - the last stop hotel.

  61. SassyMonkey Says:

I am really fighting to not get my hopes up, but just the possibility of Tevez putting on the Arsenal strip is tantalizing.

I just think he’s exactly what we need right now, and not because of skill nearly as much as because of attitude. I mean the guy never got his facial scars surgically removed because that would mean taking a break from playing, to me that speaks volumes. Some of our lads have gotten just a little too posh. Either that, or I’ve been seeing that frilly picture of Cashley too often.

  62. Anonymous Says:

    next stop Bahraini First Division

  63. Anonymous Says:

    what about Naismith!!?

  64. Anonymous Says:

If we were going to bring in a forward, may as well bring in Baptista if at all possible. at least it covers the midfield as well.

  65. joshuad Says:

Anelka wants to play in England and play in the CL. The only way he will stay at Bolton is if they look as if they will be in the CL.
He’s not only been at many clubs but has played well for them; except Real Madrid. He did Arsenal dirty and Liverpool returned the favor. Man City were never going to win anything but I often had Anelka in my fantasy team and he always scored goals. If Bolton have a fantastic year he could stay but if they don’t and he’s not in the French team, he’ll cry he want’s CL football again.

  66. joshuad Says:

There’s no way Wenger is going to turn Saviola or Tevez into a midfielder. Saviola has scored goals everywhere he’s gone. Tevez is just a badass and would score in any league. Ribery is hit or miss.

I like Tevez but Saviola was preferred to Tevez in the World Cup by the coach; but that’s the same assclown who took off Riquelme with over a half hour to go with only a single goal lead against the Germans and in a knock-out match.

    Tevez!
Besides, Tevez won’t be punked by Henry like Reyes was and Saviola would be. Guys from the gutter like Tevez, van Persie, and Eto’o “don’t give a **AYE CARUMBA**(censored) about Henry” and his moods. They’re going to play their game.

  67. joshuad Says:

I agree. Tevez and van Persie would be lethal. Hopefully Henry will play and not walk around looking at them all crazy. Even if he does, those two don’t care. They’re from the hood.

  68. Anonymous Says:

agreed, Henry is awesome, but he actually needs someone more legendary than Bergkamp to put up with him! Saviola would be bullied into passing, but Tevez will do his thing. I think it’d put Van Persie back out to the left wing.

  69. stag133 Says:

I doubt Reyes will ever be a GREAT player.
He is good, will be good, but he doesn’t have “IT”. That little extra that seperates the good players from the Superstars.
Maybe being back with his MAMA will help him out.

    I REALLY hope he goes.

  70. Fred Says:

    “i really hope he goes”

i’m amazed u are very happy to see him go even though u KNOW he won’t be replaced.

i hope this change of sentiment means less bleating about “buy, buy, buy” during the season.

  71. SCJonathan Says:

The award is given away on December 18th. I am not sure when the voting stops. If henry would have scored one of the great chances he had against Barca and led Arsenal to victory,he would be a heavy favorite to win. I agree that he can be frustrating to watch, just like watching Arsenal at times. And I do not believe he is the greatest captain, but this year I think he has as good of a chance as anyone. I just hope that Ronaldhino does not win again.

  72. nipuna Says:

Less than 24 hours to go. The current situation looks like

    - Cole is staying
    - No new central defender
    - Reyes/Baptista switch

A case of the good, the bad and the ugly?

  73. Sheed Says:

Tevez and Mascherano are going to sign for West Ham today. I thought we will get them both, but it looks like they will end up being Hammers. Come on Arsene, Mascherano is better than Gilberto and you are leaving West Ham to get him. Who knows, maybe they are signing him as a replacement for Reo-Coker, and I hope if he goes, he will come to us, not ManUtd.

Also it looks like that we are getting ‘The Beast’ in exchange for JAR. He can cover in midfield and attack, so he will be a good signing and if we can get Gallas in the Cole transfer to Chelsea, we should be OK.

At the moment looks like this:

    Reyes out, Baptista in.
    Cole out?, Gallas in?
Mascherano to West Ham, Reo-Coker to Arsenal(just my thought).

  74. Anonymous Says:

It goes like this - MSI is fronted by Joorchabian but rumoured to be funded by Abrahamovic. Tevez and Mascherano will get one year EPL/UEFA cup experience on loan at West Ham before joining Chelsea next year.

There is no other explanation, the player valautions will not increase at West Ham, they can only decrease. Would the players themselves choose West Ham over Man U, Bayern, Milan, Arsenal? No disrespect to West Ham, but come on.

    It is an absolute joke.

  75. Sheed Says:

I knew that a long time ago. I think Mascherano will end up at Chelsea when Makelele will retire. But I had a hope that Wenegr is still interested in him. He wanted to sign him two years ago when Vieira was off to Madrid, only the deal to collapse cos Vieira decided to stay.

  76. ScottyUS Says:

True. But how much would additions improve the side outside if a few of them fell injured? We’re not getting outplayed. We just can’t, or won’t, hit the target.

  77. Anonymous Says:

I’d rather have Baptista than both of them anyway!

  78. gunner4life Says:

This is a coup for the Hammers acquiring 2 players of genuine international class. It will make them stronger. I am not convinced we need Baptista as he is more of an attacking midfielder - and we already have Cesc, Helb and Rosicky who can play the same role though lack the physical attributes of Baptista. Maybe Wenger will try to perform one of his conversion jobs on Baptista and convert him to defensive midfielder. For all we know, Baptista may turn out to be another Reyes in the making as Baptista has always wanted to live in Spain (weather? language? EU citizenship?). Reo-Coker would be a better option though having seen him play a few times last season, I am not convinced he is Arsenal class. In any event, if he is going to move, it will be to ManUre who appeared to have given up on Hargreaves. Wenger will most likely go for a young and cheap unknown potential - on and by the way, did I say that Wenger is signing a Japanese 18yr old U-21 player Shi Ito. Apparently he is going to do what he did for Song by acquiring Ito under the “exceptional talent” visa category. Song is an “exceptional talent”??!! I give up!
    http://www.eatsleepsport.com/news_details.aspx?story_id=410314&l_id=1&t_id=1

  79. Denver Says:

Stag and others must be in a deep depression by now.  But don't worry, Wenger is working frantically to bring in a Japanese 18-year old:
    http://home.skysports.com/list.aspx?HLID=413256&CPID=8&title=Japan+starlet+set+for+Gunners&lid=&channel=Football_Home&f=rss&clid=3

According to Wenger, he is an “exceptional talent like Song.”
    Who needs Mascherano!!

  80. Anonymous Says:

oh, that it should come to this. hanging on to see if we have signed Naismith or Shi Ito while Chelsea sign Mascherano and Tevez for West Ham. Never mind, there’s always January.

  81. Mazza Says:

Yeah, there’s always January to f-all again. West Ham buy Tevez and we have that heap of shat Adebayor.

  82. Andez Says:

This deal West Ham made i have to say look very very weird…. Money wise, i cannot believe Man Utd or Arsenal couldn’t match up with what the Hammers offered…. Ambition wise, West Ham are not even in Europe, and with no guarantee in Europe next season neither….

What actually going on behind the scene? Anyone has a clue?

  83. Andez Says:

btw, I bet the West Ham boss forgot the check the player’s “PASSPORT” this time around! ;)

  84. ctpa Says:

You are so correct. This loan of two high priced players to West Ham (who shot their wad on Dean Ashton) is like money laundering. Tevez and Mascherano will start for WHU for a year of EPL experience and come out ready for the big time (Chelsea) 2007-2008 when Sheva is 31 and Makelele is 33.

Boro are being made to wait in line with their hat in their hand for the loan paperwork on Huth. Apparently Peter Kenyon is off somewhere trying to still secure Cashley (http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=377624&cc=5739). I hope he is bringing the naughty bits (Gallas and 25 mil).

At the end of this day, I don’t think AW will want to face the supporters with only another promising youngster being signed. I am not a big fan of Baptista from what I’ve seen at Real but I trust that Wenger can improve him. He would also be another big body in the box on set plays.

  85. nipuna Says:

    Good one. :-)

I hope someone asks him on TV but I guess it won’t happen because he is a British manager.

  86. ctpa Says:

See the Anonymous Gooner post (8/31/06-02:38 AM). MSI owns these players and the speculation about a year ago was that this would lead to a direct transfer to Chelsea. The WHU connection was never in the cards then. This now becomes a brilliant move on MSI(Chelsea)’s part. These two players valuations exceed the total valuation of WHU. If they perform well, then WHU cannot afford to sign them permanently and Chelsea step in. If they don’t perform well, then its back to Corinthians with no loss to Chelsea. Emerson Leao (Corinthian’s current manager) should be fired by then and both players will be happy to go back. The tricky part for Chelsea is that Tevez basically won the Brazilian championship for Corinthian’s in his first year.

  87. ctpa Says:

You can disregard my theories because Skysports are now reporting that Tevez and Mascherano are signing permanent deals.

  89. stag133 Says:

VERY HAPPY that Reyes looks gone, with Baptista in.
    Thats a PLUS.

Will be very interesting to see how West Ham can manage to attract two BIG TIME players for lots of money… in Tevez and Mascherano… and United and Arsenal WATCH it happen. Something isn’t right about this…
Unless we get REO-COKER because of this… then we are foolish.

I hope Cole goes for Gallas and cash in return… OR… we need to keep Ashley Cole… as we need defensive help.

Come On Arsenal… GET IT DONE!

  90. Sheed Says:

Hey, he still has signed two English players, Carlton Cole and some Maers(I think that was his name). Also with Tevez in their team, they now have six strikers, Harewood, Zamora, Ashton, Sheringham and Cole are the other five. They want to play total football, something like this 3-1-6 with Mascherano as the only midfielder :)

  91. Sheed Says:

I forgot, they have signed Bowyer and Green also, so you can’t slam Pardew for signing some foreign players, when they have signed four English.

  92. Seattlegooner Says:

Reyes is gone - although evidently neither player has signed on the dotted line, Baptista has passed a physical. It’s only a loan swap with an option to buy after a year. I’m with you Stag - I cannot believe that we couldn’t make a better offer for Mascherano than West Ham did.

  93. gunner4life Says:

Looks like Reyes is gone to RM on a 1 yr loan with Baptista coming to Arsenal on a similar loan. And both RM and Arsenal have the option to buy the player at the end of the loan. Good move as I am sure there is still some apprehension if Baptista can adapt to life in England and EPL. Now if only Cole/Gallas can be settled…..

    http://today.reuters.co.uk/news/articlenews.aspx?type=worldFootballNews&storyid=2006-08-31T192623Z_01_L31092241_RTRIDST_0_SPORT-SOCCER-REYES.XML&src=rss

I’m going to retract the above post because I just found this article (http://goal.com/en-us/articolo.aspx?ContenutoId=119635). The absurdity of this fraud bothers me to no end. This writer shares my thoughts about comparing this to money laundering.

  95. ctpa Says:

El Rey is beaming about his arrival at RM one day before his birthday. He will wear the #19 shirt. Baptista passed his Arsenal medical after failing to show up for training at RM for “personal reasons” on Thursday. But the real scoop that La Marca provides is that Pascal Cygan is going to Villarreal to provide cover for an injured CB. The implication to me is that Gallas is on the way boys and girls.
