Arsenal 2 - 1 Charlton

Two from RvP (you know, the guy many of you were pissing on early in the week) with two goals, one either side of halftime.

Charlton is a classic example of “be careful what u wish for”.

Alan Curbishley almost singlehandly took Charlton away from a finanical mess, and established them into a solid mid-table Premiership outfit.

Yet the past two seasons, he was booed by his own fans on occassions. Those boo boys claimed he had failed to take Charlton to the NEXT LEVEL..

What the failed to realize is a club with a size like Charlton, the fact that the had been a mid-table club almost year in year out for the past few years, in itself is an ACHIEVEMENT. Particular when u consider there are plenty of BIGGER clubs like Forest, Derby, Sunderland, Sheff Wednesday now are playing in the lower divisions.

Unless there is a sugar daddy decides to take over Charlton, there is no way Curbishley could take them into the NEXT LEVEL, no matter how capable a coach he is.

Now they have got their wish, Curbishley quit, and a highly rated Iain Dowie took over. As highly regarded as he is, Dowie only had ONE good season really, the season when he took Crystal Palace to the Premiership. And even in that particular season, Palance didn’t really do particular well, they only excelled during the promotion playoff.

Alan Curbishley, on the other hand, had been consistently doing a good job for around a decade.

Now the boo boys got their wish, not sure if they will live to regret it.

It’s sad, as this is a club i have a lot of respect in. At the past if we failed to get result against Charlton, normally it’s because they battled so hard.

Anyway, hope we will take advantage of their slump.

  2. Sheed Says:

Looks like Gallas is going to play. And if he plays we should win this game comfortably. Also I want to see Wenger to give Baptista more time on the pitch, not some 15-20 minutes. Why not start with Baptista as a support for Henry. RvP is not in form, Adebayor is up to his standard, so why not Baptista. I think he can offer more than any other forward(except Henry) at Arsenal. Once he is comfortable with our play, I expect ‘The Beast’ to be a regular in our side.

  3. djholmes Says:

well, charlton are always tricky games. i suggest we stick to the winning forumula. play 4-5-1 and let them come at us. VanPersie and Ljungberg are clearly liabilites on the left so id stick rosicky there and give baptista his first start.

    —————–Lehmann

    Eboue——-Toure——-Gallas—–Hoyte

    —————-Gilberto
    ———Baptista——-Fabregas
    Hleb—————————–Rosicky
    —————–Henry

  4. Seattlegooner Says:

I guess RvP is back in form a little bit, eh? It’s about time.

  5. Sheed Says:

Yup, looks like Wenger has confidence in him.

  6. junialum Says:

Finally RVP scores. 2 Goals for the Dutchman. Second one was simply superb.

    2-1 to the Arsenal. FT

  7. Mazza Says:

Van Persie is the best player in the world.

  8. Andez Says:

    What a GOAL!!

I saw Alonso and Peter Crouch scored two great goals for Liverpool lately. But van Persie’s strike is up there with the very best. Alonso’s strike from midfield included some luck factor, Crouch’s biycle kick scored when he’s wide opened.

To score a volley with a marker close down on you, and somehow managed to keep the ball down required some great technic.

  9. gunner4life Says:

There is no question RvP have one of the sweetest left foot in football. In fact I would like him to alternate with Henry on freekicks and penalties. He just need to keep his temperament in check. The yellow card he received for the tackle on Hassellbank was really not necessary. He can be a great player if he stays out of trouble on the field.

  10. stag133 Says:

    I love it!
    Van Persie can’t play.
    Van Persie shouldn’t start.
    Gotta play the Beast.

    BAM BAM! BAM!

Moments of Brilliance. Thats what keeps us coming back for more with RVP.
He teases us with amazing goals like today… and yet lacks the consistency at this time to garner the immediate selection as Thierry’s partner up front.

    Very big win.
We CAME FROM BEHIND. Thats another positive, in that we haven’t done much of that very often… Liverpool lose, Chelsea draw… we win.
    That…
is a very good day for the Arsenal Football Club.

    Ride the wave!
I’d say Gallas & Baptista IN, Reyes and Cole OUT… has had a fairly immediate … and positive impact on our team. Stating… the obvious!
    ROLL baby ROLL.

  11. ScottyUS Says:

Listened to the game on the BBC, and they really make it tough on the nerves. Not only do they make it sound like every chance is going in (for both sides), they jump to other games in England, and if you’re not paying attention, one can easily think someone has scored. Anyway, great come from behind win away from home, something pretty rare for our club lately. In fact, a member of another forum (cheers, Allyboy) posted this:

“First league game since Feb 21st 2004 against Cuntski that we have gone behind away from home and gone on to win the game!”

Wow. Let’s hope the winning trend continues as, yet again, the momentum is fooled with due to frustrating internationals. Stay healthy lads, and well done.

    UTAKTCKTF!

  12. Mazza Says:

Geez, a post from Scotty, rarer than an Alexander Hleb goal these days ;^)

My theory on why everyone is posting less is that we have almost covered every single issue in the last year and a half, it’s all been said and done, now it’s time to see how it all plays out.

One original and fresh thought which emerged from watching the game today is that our best back four is Eboue, Toure, Djourou, and Gallas at left-back. We need Djourou’s aerial ability, which was vital against Manure recently. The problem is breaking the news to Gallas that he once again be a positional nomad.

  13. stag133 Says:

I rather like Kolo / Gallas in the middle.
If we can ever get Clichy back in the line-up, I’d think that’d be the way it would go.

The site doesn’t like “original or honest” thoughts and opinions.
You give that type of posting, and you get name calling and non-sense.

That would be my bet as to why people are posting less.
There can’t be lively debate. Its just not worth the battle.

But hey, thats just my 2 cents.
    I don’t like someone’s post… I don’t have to respond.
Its easier NOT to post at this time. There are other sites where you get less “non-sense” for posting your opinions.

  14. gunner4life Says:

Yes. It will be ideal to have Toure and Gallas play in central defence. Clichy has been out for too long and for too often in his short career. Not sure if he will ever get an injury free run in the team. Wenger must know this as well. Right back is very well covered with Eboue, Lauren and Gilbert who can all perform. Hoyte is at best a squad player and definitely not a left back. I think it might be wise to try out Djourou at left back. He can kick with his left foot, he has speed, strong recovery skills and is stronger than Clichy in the air. He may not be as adept as Clichy going forward down the left wing but surely that can come with more matches. And there is young Traore waiting in the wings.

  15. fstanin Says:

RvP wanted to celebrate, and he did at the Gooner end of the ground. TH14 came up to him and looked like he wanted to say something to him, almost in a lecturing way rather than a celebratory way - RvP ignored him, and then TH14 shrugged his shoulders and held his hands up as if to say “he’s now too good to talk to.” What’s up? Did anybody else see this?

  16. SCJonathan Says:

Did not see the match, just the highlights. Two good goals from RVP. I do not think his best place in the team has yet been determined. Another good piece of business by Wenger, he bought RVP for 2 mil and he should be worth much more now. I definitely think he is better than Kuyt.

But I find it annoying when announcers say he is the next Bergkamp. Besides both being Dutch and both showing moments of brillance, thier style of play is really not that similar. Hleb is the closest thing we now have to DB10. His assist to RVP for the first goal was just like DB10, holding the ball long enough and then releasing the killer pass.

  17. Andez Says:

Scotty, it’s really every chance could have gone in (from either side)! Credit to Charlton, they didn’t sit back, really took the game to us. We could have beaten them by 3 or 4 goals, while we could also have lost to them. One of the most entertaining matches so far this season.

  18. greg Says:

I think Hoyte's problem is between his ears more than anything.  His skills seem fine. He just seems too nervous. His biggest mistakes seem to come from overcommitting when he doesn't have to. He makes a simple mistake, then makes a glaring and costly mistake trying to compenesate.  Both come from inexperience.  Or maybe getting shelled week in, week out for a year.  Anyway, I think if he could just relax a bit he might turn out OK.

  19. irishgunner Says:

Yes, I did see it. I think you got wrong end of the stick. Van Persie was already on a yellow card. If he got booked for celebrating in the crowd - it happens - he would have been off. Henry’s gesture was to the referee.

  20. irishgunner Says:

Another incremental improvement. Coming from behind was big, doing that away from home was bigger. Fantastic goals from Van Persie.

Lot of pressure on Van Persie today. He has had a bit of a run in the team and hadn’t scored. Adebayor was putting in the hard work even if he wasn’t scoring much. But Van Persie came good. Delighted for him.

Henry has yet to play to top form so I think there is more to come from this team. Hopefully, four new signings in October - Lauren, Senderos, Clichy and Diaby - to strenghten our squad depth. Onwards and upwards.

If our game in hand was tomorrow and we won it, we would be two points behind Chelsea and Manchester United. For a team supposedly in crisis after three games (was anyone stupid enough to say that back then?), not going to do anything, the scene has changed dramatically. I am not going to say we will win the league but look at the early signs with around one sixth of the season gone. We have beaten Utd. at Old Trafford, Liverpool have lost three times and Spurs are a disaster. Of course, Utd have gone well against the poor teams (just like us, some would say) and Chelsea have been Chelsea. At worst, for the Negative Nicks, we look better than Liverpool and Spurs with some catching up still to do on Utd and more on Chelsea.

P.S. To get more comments and posting, anyone want to put Wenger on trial again?

  21. gerard Says:

He’s Dutch isn’t dat wierd? But he didn’t loose his member in a smelting accident but they should make a gold cast of that leg anyway. Amazing goal!!!

Suffice it to say you ain’t much if you ain’t Dutch. Nice one RVP.

Lotsa good came from that game all mentioned above. Just thought I’d get my silly 10 cents worth of Dutch in there because as you all know 10 cents is a lot if your Dutch.

  22. fstanin Says:

    Thanks for the clarification.

  23. joshuad Says:

Stag, that is a great freaking picture! They need to make that a poster. If they do, I’ll put it up in my bar downstairs.

  24. joshuad Says:

If Baptista ain’t ready he shouldn’t play yet. Wenger will sit his ass on the bench until he proves he is ready. There is no need to play a guy that isn’t fit so he can go out and embarass himself. That would kill his confidence. We all want to see him play but I’d rather not see him yet if he’s going to look like an assclown. At the end of the day it’s not about what we want but about the team.

  25. DannyT Says:

Was a bit worried about how many chances Charlton had, although you'll notice nearly every chance they created came from Hoytes' side. Gallas didn't have a great game did he? If you watch Charlton's goal he could have cut the cross out but just stood there, baffling!?

I think a draw probably would have been a fair result, and a bad result for us, we got lucky with the blatant penalty from Gallas' handball. Hasselbaink also missed a sitter from 6 yards, but then Arsenal missed a fair number of sitters too.

Not the best performance, but pleased for Van Persie and a very important win.

  26. ScottyUS Says:

To be honest, my posting started to decrease after the site was updated. Not that I don’t appreciate the hard work Andrew et al did, but my browser had a lot of problems adjusting, and even now, I can’t use any of the new functions (I use Safari). That sent me off to arseblog, where most of my analysis was getting done. I would always return here to put in a couple of cents here and there and read what’s happening with everyone, but it was too much to repeat everything. Actually, I kind of miss the old format, too.

I do agree with your assessment of Djourou’s aerial ability, and Hoyte is still a world away from being good enough to start. Gallas still wasn’t 100% fit, but I’m sure Wenger saw the internationals coming and figured if there was a game he could sit out and heal up all the way, it should be when he’s playing for Domenech.

Now, if only Freddie could get on the score sheet. He works his arse off, and has gotten close. His fitness set backs have cost him a little pace, and he seems just a little short of making the kind of contribution he used to. But I still have faith in the nutter. Lots of great memories, and he’s Arsenal through and through.

  27. Mazza Says:

Agree about format, more like 1999 than 2006. If it ain’t broke……..

  28. seagunner Says:

I thought Gallas looked a bit jaded… I figured he was still maybe not quite fit following his hamstring injury. But a 50% Gallas is better than a 100% Song in central defence…

  29. ScottyUS Says:

No doubt about it, Andez, it had draw written all over it. Scott Carson had a great game, as did Jens. Gallas was still nursing an injury, and Hoyte had a bit of a ‘mare. Luckily, Hleb, Freddie and and Robin stepped up. That’s how great teams win tough games - by being able to rely on different players when the rock solid vets and/or weak links faulter. Titi looks more relaxed because he can help create goals rather than have to take on the entire team by himself. And no Reyes and Cole spreading their wantaway virus through the side gave us the character to come back from a very aggressive Charlton. As Wenger said, we look hungry and on the same page now. The rub of the green usually favors those kinds of teams, and we needed plenty from lady luck.

I think we’re just beginning to see the return of team spirit at Arsenal. Cole, Sol and Reyes really sapped a lot of energy from our lads, and it looks like they’re getting it back.

  30. nipuna Says:

A come from behind win. Exactly what I ordered after the Sheffield win. :-)

But it wasn’t easy. Many times, our defence was all over the place. A less than fully fit Gallas didn’t help. JFH missed from close range. Lehmann produced a great save from Ried. If only Henry had scored from the open chance. :-(

RvP’s goal was super. There was an element of luck in the fact that it hit his shin, but he deserved it. After missing an easy chance for the hat-trick, I wonder if we will see any simple 6-yard goals from him. In that sense, he is the complete opposite of Ade. And neither is doing it consistently. So who do you partner with Henry?

I like AW sticking to the 4-5-1. He doesn’t have to worry about Henry’s partner. Still surprised to see Ljunberg get so much playing time. 70 mins against Sheffield, 20 mins against Porto and 90 minutes against Charlton. The more he plays, the less Baptista does.

It’s still early days, but you can’t help but get the feelign that if AW rotates properly, we will have a good shot at the title. Chelsea, ManU and Liverpool are all stumbling. We had our own at the start of the season. It will be close. But we can be there.

  31. nipuna Says:

Yes, Hleb’s work before the RvP goal was very similar to Bergkamp’s work before the Ljunberg game against Juve in the CL.

  32. nipuna Says:

After watching the replays, I don’t think it was easy for Gallas to block the cross without diving and risking an own goal. I am sure Gallas didn’t expect Toure and Eboue to leave Bent totally unmarked.

  33. chalfie Says:

Clichy and Senderos are back in the reserves tonight.

We still looked a bit shaky at the back.

  34. DannyT Says:

He wasn’t central enough to score an own goal. Maybe he didn’t want to stretch for it for fear of doing his hamstring again.

  35. DannyT Says:

Baptista is a central player, either midfield or up front. So whether Ljungberg plays or not is totally irrelevant to whether Baptista plays.

I think Van Persie and Adebayor will be rotated depending on the opposition.

  36. stag133 Says:

    Josh…

I did not put that picture up.
I think it had to be MIKE K. or ANDREW…
    they added the picture.

I agree, its a fantastic photo.
I would ask Mike K or Andrew… I am sure they can tell you where to acquire it!
(its probably available on the Arsenal.com website… they have a photos section that is fantastic.

    Good Luck
    Stag

  37. SCJonathan Says:

What happens if at the end of the season JAR is starting most games for Real and The Beast is starting most games on the bench for Arsenal? Would the move be made permanent with us getting Baptista and cash? JAR does not want to play for Arsenal and I do not think anyone wants him back so the final negotiations could get tricky.

  38. nipuna Says:

Ljunberg was playing central in a 4-5-1 formation. RvP and Hleb were playing on the wings. Baptista would have been ideal ahead of Cesc and Gilberto. So it does matter.
