There seems to be some discord going on over at mighty Barcelona.
They still lead La Liga… but I have heard the rumors of Ronaldinho going elsewhere possibly, and now the big issue with Eto and the 2 factions in the locker room.
Obviously, HYPOTHETICAL… but if we could swap Cesc for Ronaldinho… would you do it?
It would go against “the Arsenal way” of getting younger (and younger and younger!)… but Ronaldinho is only 26. Hardly over the hill, and probably not even at his peak. Its possible Cesc will want to play at his beloved Barcelona during his career… and as his career skyrockets in the next few years, so would his “potential” transfer fee!!
There were already folks touting DENILSON, who “plays Cesc’s position” as being a tremendous talent… so I ask… would you swap Cesc for Ronaldinho?
Would you swap him for anyone… any player? or do you view this kid as the next “best player in the game”?
I might go for the straight swap for Ronaldinho… I think we could win a bunch of titles and trophies over the next few years with him… but I don’t think there are too many other players out there I’d rather have than Cesc going forward. He should be an awesome player in a year or two. He’s already pretty damned fantastic at times.

i wouldnt swap cesc for anyone. he is a great talent and will only get better and better. as much as i rate ronaldinho, his style is perpect for la liga and he wouldnt be as good in the premiership.

If it mean Diaby could get a game the show me the money!!

first and foremost…….cesc and ronaldinho dont play in the same position. ronaldinho can NEVER play CM.
next, barca dont need fabregas right now. they already have too many CMs.
next, whats the proof that ronaldinho can survive the “brainless” hoof and run tactics of the premiership. afterall schevshenko is not doing that great.
next, ronaldinho has a massive ego…and at arsenal there is only room for one big ego…(ie. Henry). so if he comes here we will have to give henry to barca.
all in all, this exchange is NEVER going to happen and neither should it. it will be silly and foolish for us to give away fabregas who is “heart” of our team.
if we were ever to get somebody from the barca lineup i want ETO’O. he and henry will strike the fear of god in defenders. we can give them adebayor plus cash in exchange.
imagine that: Henry, Eto?o, RvP, Baptista, Bendtner. premiership winning strikeforce.

Never. Not in a million years. Not for the entire Barcelona team.

I like Cesce, I dont want him to leave. Ronaldinho is a great player. Possibly one of the best. Why not having him in Arsenal along Henry and Cesce. Stop thinking of off loading Arsenal players (established ones) and think of bringing players.

Well, if Cesc stayed at his current level and did not improve, and Ronaldinho came over here at his peak and with full willingness to adjust to english football, I would swap him for Fabregas.
I’m not convinced that Cesc has improved technically in the last year, although physically he is much more imposing. He also struggles to make his mark in premiership games for a sustained period. It his in europe where he is indispensable.
All in all though, the swap would be too much of a gamble. Ronaldinho has shown flaws in his game and mental make-up in the last year and might struggle to adjust to the english game or have the fortitude to attempt to. In Fabregas we would lose a great professional, a talented all-round footballer, and a player with the potential to be great.
I’m not sure how much more Fabregas will improve though so it’s a tough question.

Fred… its a HYPOTHETICAL question to promote discussion on the site.
I don’t care if they play the same exact position.
Never said it was going to happen… just thought it would be INTERESTING.

No, wouldn’t want the entire CL Champions team for a 19 yr old!

Fabregas may well play in Spain one day but he has got plenty of football to play for Arsenal.
Ronaldinho, is a great player, perhaps more advances than Cesc, full of tricks and touches. I doubt whether we could afford his wages, or the time for him to bed in. He wont get as much time on the ball as he is used to, and as we saw in the World Cup he is not affective without the ball.
If Ronaldinho was to leave Barca, he would do to Italy or Chelsea.

Its hypothetical.
I am not thinking of off-loading our star midfielder.
Its just a thought provoking question!
February 14th, 2007 at 11:10 am
As Joshaud mentioned before, the conundrum with Fabregas is what sort of midfielder he is going to become. I don’t think he is good enough to be the breaking midfielder like Scholes as he has not got the shot or the physical dynamism to break through the opponents clutches and score a goal. At the moment anyway.
I think he is more suited to the Guardiola position with a more attack-minded player next to him. Fabregas is alot more effective going forward when it’s not forced and when it’s a natural progression of the move. Arsenal would be more open in defence with Cesc as the prime holding midfielder but our ball retention would be exceptional and that might negate those weaknesses. Maybe Denilson could be the one to go forward consistently.

I don’t know why you are asking would we swap Cesc for Ronaldinho, as Ronaldinho is a right-sided attacking midfielder, Cesc is a central midfielder. It’s like saying would you swap Toure for Eto’o?? Why not just say, would you buy Eto’o?
Anyway, I wouldn’t swap Cesc for anyone as he’s the new Bergkamp - there are very few players like him in world football who can split defences in half 3 or 4 times in a game, no matter what the opposition - and at his age it’s truly remarkable.
I think Ronaldinho could acclimatise to the Premiership quite well, he’s actually quite strong physically and can get stuck in, but for the amount of money he would cost you might as well forget it.
If I had my pick of Barcelona players I’d take Eto’o ahead of Ronaldinho, his impact would be greater, but we couldn’t afford him either.
February 14th, 2007 at 12:10 pm
Doesn’t really matter if they don’t play the same position. It’s hypothetical. Besides, there’s no evidence to say that Eto’o would thrive in the EPL either.

Bite your tongue. Don’t be selling or trading Imanuel Adebayor!
February 14th, 2007 at 2:31 pm
I hope people here are kiding when they say they would not swap Cesc for Ronaldinho.? He is the best player in the world when he's in form Cesc is not at that level at all.? He will probably want to leave in a couple years anyway.
February 14th, 2007 at 2:53 pm
Ronaldinho has not been that impressive in the last 2 seasons - in fact, his team has often carried him. He was god awful in the world cup too. Still a great player, but not the best in the world right now.
Cesc is the future, Ronaldinho maybe only 26 but he’s playing like he’s in the past. Right now, Cesc would offer more than Ronaldinho to this team. You have to look at how players play, not just their name - this isn’t Championship Manager.
February 14th, 2007 at 3:35 pm
Eto will acclimatize easily to the premiership….africans dont have a problem with the physical nature unlike the South americans. FACT!
in my opinion, eto and henry are the two best strikers in the world. i would LOVE them here.
February 14th, 2007 at 3:39 pm
i would trade adebayor plus cash for Eto in a second!! thank you.
Eto?o is a top, top, top striker who ALWAYS performs on the raw nights!
February 14th, 2007 at 3:43 pm
ofcourse i know its hypothetic, dont be silly…..
but why ask about exchanging a striker for a CM. it doesnt make sense. you might as well ask if we can exchange Kolo Toure for Shevshenko.
February 14th, 2007 at 3:53 pm
seems like a lot of u dont really realize how massive Fabregas is.
think of it this way: Fabregas is by FAR the best passer of the ball in the Premiership. Yes he is.
now lets further that statement. He is surely top 3 in Europe. The only one i can think of that is just as good is Kaka…but Kaka is mid twenties and plays in a league where they allow you to “sleep” with the ball. Maybe Xavi but he is better at shorter passes.
So we have a massive player right here. And he is just 19! If we are ever going to win the CL in the next few years it will be mostly because of his brilliance.
February 14th, 2007 at 6:23 pm
i wouldn't… cesc in not even 21 and he's playing first team football at one of the best teams in the planet, not only that but the style of the arsenal play is unrivaled. I'd keep cesc and go for Eto'o …
now, saying that dinho “hasn't impressed” is quite silly. He is incredible and I do think he can adapt to the premier league.. if c. ronaldo can of course he can. And i think sheva will come good eventually, i hope not, but i think he will.
cesc IS the new Bergkamp, i agree… i wouldn't sell him for the world… not dinho , not anyone.
the only way i would trade him is if we could magically get bergkamp to came back at 100% !!! there's not a single player alive i would trade him for.
February 14th, 2007 at 7:01 pm
Good Question.
My answer: Never in a million years.
We all know how good Cesc is, and how good he can become. But, added to that, he loves the club, seems loyal and has a humility and dignity that makes him to be admired even more. I would have that than Ronaldhino’s ego, as talented as he is.
I would take Eto’o above Ronaldhino too any day, but not for swapping Henry, Cesc or anyone else. Ok, well maybe Baptista…
February 14th, 2007 at 10:31 pm
Your an ass not a chance in the world. if he wants to go back to barca when he is the worlds greatest player thats his choice. we’ll take the 80 or whatever million then and by the next ronaldinho.
February 14th, 2007 at 10:35 pm
Are you kidding me??????? Why did I waste my time reading this dribble?
February 14th, 2007 at 11:57 pm
Why swap when Arsenal can have both Cesc and Ronaldinho? I am sure Ronaldinho will like to partner with Henry in attack. And there are 3 of his countrymen in AG to keep him company.
February 15th, 2007 at 10:32 am
Now - maybe. In 2 years no way. Fabregas is stronger this season than last, getting more box to box. Next season he will be even stronger and more confident and the goals will start to come and he will show more and more of his ability.
If anyone is going, may I open the debate on Thierry Henry?
The team seems to play better without him. He may not recover his pace, he certainly hasn’t at the moment.
