It had been exactly a month since the Gunners last won a match, but when it mattered most, Cesc Fabregas powered Arsenal to a 2-1 victory over perennial bogey-side Bolton.
It looked as though the dark days were to continue when after ten minutes, Arsenal old boy, and all around rat-faced bastard Nicolas Anelka put the Midlands club up 1-0. The Gunners fought back, and at one point in the first half, dominated possession by an astonishing 94% to 6%. Finally, the hard work paid off, when a nice cross by Emmanuel Adebayor combined with some poor Bolton defending, and Tomas Rosicky beat his marker to latch onto the ball, took two touches and put it over Jaaskelainen leg and in for the equalizer.
So, the sides went into the break level at 1-1, but that only lasted 30 seconds into the second half. Cesc Fabregas’ incredible individual effort, capped off by a slick curling shot from 10 yards out put the Gunners up for good.
Bolton rarely threatened, and Arsenal had several opportunities to kill the game off, but blew all of them. The most glaring of which occurred in the dying moments when Abou Diaby and Julio Baptista were 2 on none against the keeper, and Diaby shot lamely straight into Jaaskelainen’s chest.
So a huge three points earned, giving the Gunners a five point cushion over Bolton for fourth place, and still with a game in hand. You know, people may laugh, but third place is still there for the taking.
