What we need in Arsenal is an identity! Another signing!
Jul 11

Justin Hoyte an English U21, played more than 30 games for Arsenal last season and now he might be sold for only 2 million.

Some unknown English player in Div1 goes for 6 million. Owen Hargreaves goes for 40 million. Bent goes for more than Henry cost Barca!

We all accept that English players are over-priced, so then why not sell Hoyte for 6 or 7 millions pounds?

We saw players like Bentley, Pennant, Upson, .. all went for peanuts.

WHY ???

Well, pretty much every name you can mention in this argument (Titi still remains to be seen) hasn’t amounted to much once they left North London… so what’s your point? You think Arsenal has been cheated?

I think it’s because in the cases of Bent and Owen H., their clubs didn’t want to sell them, the buying clubs therefore have to pay over the “market value” in order to nick them away.

In Arsenal’s cases, those players u mentioned, they club was willing to let them go, or want to get rid of them, so the club naturally would accept an offer equal to or below their “market value”.

I think the media also play a part in it. Take Bent, he’s one of the best players with Charlton, so he got his share of media hype, and it would take a great deal of money for Charlton to accept a deal trying to buy their BEST player.

On the other hand, HAD Bent a Arsenal, or Chelsea or Man U player, he probably would only be playing a squad rotation role, the spot light would not be on him. His value would also be lower.

SWP is a good example: when Chelsea signed him, they paid a lot of money to lurk him away from Man City, as he was City’s best player that time.

Now if Chelsea sell him, I don’t know how much they could get in return, after him spending most of the time on the bench.

Because Wenger is a realist. He buys players for normal price and he sells them for normal price too.

  4. DannyT Says:

Defenders are not seen as important as attacking players so you tend to be able to buy them cheaper. Hoyte won’t win games, Bent will. Considering Ljungberg is going for £6m, when he is injured all the time and nothing like the player he was, you can see how one is treated different from the other. You also have to factor in demand, that’s what drives the price up. If lot’s of teams are after one player the price goes up, if it’s a big club BUYING the price goes up more. I bet you no-one was interested in Hoyte until Arsenal wanted to get rid of him, and even then only Reading seem to be interested. What do you expect? £2.5m is about right for a dodgy right back who will never play for England or do anything remotely exciting.

i think its normal….big clubs always sell their unwanted players to smaller clubs on the cheap.

i still think hoyte will stay….because if he is sold that does not really help our depth problem now does it? What happens during the nations cup? Or is Wenger going to buy a rightwinger? Hoyte should stay because I dont see us bringing anyone else in. And Hleb definitely needs competition.

and if we really want to get rid of Hoyte we should put him, Ljunberg plus some cash in a sweetly packaged basket and try to get that M. Richards fella in exchange!

Demand and desire have a lot to do with the price.

Anelka -> 23M, Overmars+Petit -> 25M, Vieira -> 13.6M are cases of player in demand and/or our desire to hold on to them.

Reyes -> 7/8M is a case of player wanting to leave, no desire on our part to hold on and player not in demand.

Sagna has officially signed for Arsenal. Now we must wait and see where he will be played.

Even Arsenal.com lists him at 5′ 9″. Pretty sure he won’t be playing CB, but Wenger, as always, puts him as a versatile player - “He plays mainly at right back, but can also play along the defence or in midfield”. When asked himself, Sagna said that he plays at RB or LB (no mention of CB or midfield).

Typical Wenger, you look left, he goes right. You look at Anelka, Martins and Tevez, he signs Eduardo. You look for a winger or a CB, he signs a RB.

    Interesting times ahead.
