Arsenal America Board Changes In Search of a #1
Oct 11

Arguably the world’s most famous Gooner, Nick Hornby will be touring the United States this month starting with a stop in New York on Tuesday in support of his newest book, Slam.

The author of such modern-day classics as High Fidelity, About A Boy, and of course the Gooner manifesto, Fever Pitch, will be hitting several cities across the US, so there will be several opportunities to go out and support a fellow Arsenal supporter. For tour dates and locations, click here.

For some of our new members and guests, this is also an opportunity for us to revisit the great interview our founder, Rick Liebling, did with Nick back in 2004. Check it out here.

Aww why Houston? Why not Dallas? We must not have as many Arsenal fans. This makes me sad.

redqueen, do you come to games at Trinity Hall?

I was thinking the same thing but then realized I will in the UK then so it will not matter.

I went to the Boston (Brookline, MA, technically) Nick Hornby reading and book signing last night. Thanks for the heads up!

I talked to Nick as he signed six of my books - inscribing “Best wishes to a fellow Gunner” on Fever Pitch! - about the Arsenal.

    Some of his comments:

Me: “What are your ambitions for Arsenal this year? The quadruple?” Nick: “Really I think next year is the year to watch. The club have improved a lot since last year. I am impressed most by the recent Carling Cup performances.”

Me: “Who will start in goal against Bolton on Saturday?” Nick: “There is no way that Lehmann will start.”

Nick: “Have you been to the Emirates Stadium yet?” Me: “That’s where I bought this shirt” (Fabregas home shirt).

Kicking off the Q&A after the reading, Nick invited questions about two topics, the second of which was Arsenal’s early season form. The second question to him concerned the Arsenal takeover situation, and he replied at length bemoaning the baleful influence of Abramovitch and Abramovitch wannabes in English Football. He said his one share is not for sale to anyone, and speculated that Stan Kroenke seemed a more salubrious long-term partner for the Arsenal than Usmanov.

His current book concerns a skateboarder and he was asked why he chose that sport. He said that he wanted a cool sport for a sixteen-year-old and initially considered a footballer, since that was way cool when he was himself a teenager. But he feels that the $80 minimum ticket price for EPL games limits kids’ involvement with their teams and ruled out that choice in his book.

There were three other chaps wearing Arsenal gear at the sold-out event.

He was asked about Fever Pitch, The Red Sox movie, and said he claimed responsibility for the World Series win, adding that they would never win again unless he was involved.

It was a very similar experience that we had here in Chicago.

The only difference is that Nick signed my copy of Fever Pitch -”To my very favorite Gooner in Chicago”
