An absolutely amazing European night at the Grove, capped off by Theo Walcott scoring twice in his first Champions League start. Cesc Fabregas added two, his first coming four minutes into the game. Alex Hleb also scored twice, but one of his goals was deemed an own goal by the Slavia defender. Nicklas Bendtner rounded out the scoring late to add the PAT.
So, Arsenal win by a touchdown, and the confidence is oozing prior to this Sunday’s huge match at Anfield between the only remaining unbeaten teams in the League. Liverpool needed help to win against Everton last week, but derby matches are always a bad indication of a team’s form.
Due to the time change in the UK this Saturday night, the kickoff isn’t until Noon ET on Sunday. The match will be broadcast live here in the US on Fox Soccer Channel.

now lets beat liverpool at anfield!

Not much to critique. You could argue weak competition. But I don’t think Slavia Prague are as bad as we made them look. And to the Eboue haters out there, there is no denying this kid has immense talent. I agree that he can be a bit mentally challenged. But he has pace, great feet, vision, strength and versatility. The consistency is only a matter of time.
I can’t wait for Sunday.

no one said SEVEN HEAVEN yet! long due scoreline after that one against boro at highbury…
now we netta focus on our defending. let’s keep the clean sheets going!
October 23rd, 2007 at 5:20 pm
this team is something special lads, something special indeed!!
men of the match, theo, cesc and hleb, coul not decide who was better, but given this was theo’s 1st start, it must be him. he had a couple chances at a hat trick, a more central role is clearly beneficial for him and the team.
the defense didnt have to do that much, but looked well organized, our starting back four have not played together that much this season and this was a good game to keep getting used to each other (specially with the two big games coming up) and to almunia, who made a couple of very nice saves.
say what u like, but i really like almunia, he has been a trooper and team player as a backup and now is his time to shine. he provides a great presence in the box during crosses and corners, a hell of a punch in this guy, and his positioning has improved tremendously. even when he came off the line a few games ago (was it in bucharest? when kolo made the headed save?) he did it relying on his central defender for cover, and that is crucial understanding between the keeper and the back four. he will only get better the more he plays as his confidence grows, he has AW’s backing. let’s give him a true chance and all our support!
anyway, glorious CL night, a clear indication of things to come.

What a match! Equaling the record goal difference set by Juve; even more amazing to me is the fact that five goals were scored by players 20 yo or under. That must be some kind of a record for a senior squad in Eurpean play. Wenger has assembled an amazing set of young players, who continue to improve under our eyes, Mr. Walcott being the latest to shine, Mr. Bendtner next in queue.
The decision to start Theo in this one was interesting. AW picked a point at which Theo was up and Eduardo still trying to find his way. Right now the team choice seems quite meritocratic. Longstanding reputations (Lehmann, Gilberto) give way to current form and promise.
Bring on the scousers!

I expected Slavia Prague to put up a bigger fight but kudos to the boys for goal fest. These are my takeaways from the game:
Our defence wasn’t troubled much today - we will learn what they are made of in the next 2 EPL games.
1) Wenger is right to bench Gilberto in favour of Flamini base on current form. Flamini is goes into tackles with alot more venom than Gilberto. While Gilberto made some good moves today, he was also somewhat casual in a few dangerous situations - one which forced Almunia to make a great save.
2) Wenger is right to sit Lehmann and continue with Almunia. Despite being a spectator for much of the game, Almunia made the saves needed to keep another clean sheet for Arsenal. And his distribution is less erratic than Lehmann’s.
3) Wenger is wrong to think Theo can be a central striker. Theo biggest (and currently only) asset is his speed. In the central position, he will run out of space to use his speed. I think he is much better down the wings providing the crosses. Yes he scored 2 goals today though the first was really a gift from their keeper. I think Bendtler is a much better central striker with his ability to hold off defenders and aerial strength.
4) I am convinced Bendtler should get more games at EPL and CL level as he clearly has the confidence to take on players.
5) Adebayor is in a bit of a scoring slump but he worked his ass off today - again. Lets pray he returns to scoring form in time for the Pool and ManUre games.
6) Helb looked to have stepped up his game this season and long may that continue. Cesc and him appear to have improved on their interpassing.
7) Eboue is an enigma - so much skill with his flicks and such but lack the experience (or is it intelligence) to provide the killer pass ala Helb & Cesc.
October 23rd, 2007 at 7:11 pm
Take nothing away from Slavia, technically they are pretty solid a side. I would not be surpised should Spurs meet them in UEFA Cup, Bottenham may not be able to even beat a side like them. Even when 6-0 down, they were still trying to PLAY football, I guess that explain why many European footballers are technically so solid.
Today’s win simply because of one reason - a brilliant brilliant team performance from Arsenal.
And what makes it even more brilliant is - HOW OLD THIS CURRENT ARSENAL SIDE IS??!!
October 23rd, 2007 at 7:17 pm
disagree with u on Walcott Gunner4Life.
Remember, this is only his first start as striker this season. The performance was absoutley top class. And i am not talking about goals.
His control was excellent, surely didn’t give me a feeling that he’s only 18 and it’s his first game as striker this season.
The partnership of Walcott and Adebyaor in years to come can be deadly. Both with pace, while Adebyaor’s ability to hold up the ball will free up Walcott and gives Theo lot of space to operate. As it surely takes more than one defender to stop Ade. It would left Walcott opened.
Josh said before Adebyoar cannot play together with Bendtner, AW thought the same way, and I agree that as well.
So it’s starting to shape up of our future striking partnership: Ade or Bendtner to partner van Persie or Walcott or da Silva.
We now have more different options upfront than ever!
October 23rd, 2007 at 7:21 pm
I’ve heard of confidence building and there was a lot of “it” going on in that game.
My own head began to swell as I mused on lofty thoughts that Footy truly will be the number one sport in Heaven, just like here on Earth, and how I just had the pleasure of watching some of the best on Earth play it. Kudos’ to the lads and a tip of the hat to Walcott’s and Bendtner’s first CL goals.
A proud day to be a Gunner! Now they take it to the Pool (and without Batista -
)
October 23rd, 2007 at 7:29 pm
And to think I wasn’t going to go this game. Thank god I did.
The best football I have ever seen. Slavia Prague are a relatively poor side but with our players on this form I think most teams would have struggled to contain us.
I’m really intrigued by the Liverpool game now and how we will approach it. Part of me wishes we were playing Man United at the Emirates this Sunday as a Liverpool spoke could derail us for that game against them the week after. I would love to watch us play United with the mentality we showed tonight so hopefully nothing too mentally-scarring occurs on Sunday.
October 23rd, 2007 at 7:36 pm
Is anybody aware if there’s a website where I can purchase a downloadable copy of this game. I mean the full game and not highlights. UEFA and Arsenal TV appears to offer only highlights.
October 23rd, 2007 at 7:41 pm
WOW
Nothing more to say.
October 23rd, 2007 at 8:02 pm
If Wenger got it wrong playing Walcott up front, and Walcott ended up scoring almost a hattrick, along with one assist, let’s hope Wenger gets it wrong every time!
October 23rd, 2007 at 8:32 pm
Nice game. Understatement of the year. Slavia Praha, a day late and a dollar short. They tried, they really tried but Arsenal were like ghosts-here there and everywhere. Slavia had to be wondering why Arsenal were allowed to play with extra players.
Much better from Eboue today. That flick for Bendtner’s goal was a thing of beauty.
Hleb is a different player is Europe. He was superb in our last CL run. He needs to bring that pace to the EPL. Currently, he checks back too much for my taste.
Can someone shut Lehmann up. He has become a self-absorb bore. #1 is earned by performance and his performances in the league have been woeful.
Gilberto has handled his situation with dignity.
October 23rd, 2007 at 8:42 pm
The Eboue flick for our last goal was a beauty.
October 23rd, 2007 at 9:28 pm
AW’s postmatch statement. I believe it speaks for all of us.
“There is still more to come from this team. Can we keep our humility and feet on the ground? Can we continue to enjoy what we do? Then I feel we can develop.
“We have seen some great performances, but still everyone is improving.”
“We just remind everybody that two months ago I was crazy not to buy players and we were not even rated to be in the top seven. We have no reason to be carried away, because exactly the same people who will now say we can win the European Cup said we would finish 15th two months ago.
“We have to be realistic and just prepare for the next game and show we can win it.”
October 23rd, 2007 at 9:54 pm
looking at the highlights, goal six was a real masterpiece of a goal. infact all our goals were well worked, near perfect goals apart for the deflection and their goalies gift to walcott.
October 23rd, 2007 at 10:05 pm
@ gunner4life: i think you are wrong about walcott. i think he is ONLY a striker, he cant be anything else effectively.
walcott is basically a michael owen type of striker. he still has some work to do….but his best scenario was the one where he scored his second goal today. nip in there and shoot. it is very effective if the striker is very fast and confident. that is why owen scored bucketloads before his injuries. i hope walcott can emulate owen 2001.
ofcourse the fact that he is a striker does not stop him from going to the wings from time to time and crossing in. he did that a couple of times today as well.
October 23rd, 2007 at 10:06 pm
This is great momentum coming into the Liverpool match….Anfield is a tough place to play, but I am liking how we are looking….
Way to be Gunners! Love to see the depth of the team. Theo looked the most fit that I have seen him. Hope he continues to mature and improve. This will only happen with more touches…
October 24th, 2007 at 1:30 am
Speechless.
AW will keep them grounded, as someone pointed out. Now, somebody please keep me grounded!
The incredible thing to me is that liverpool and man u are coming up, Gunners are cruising in the CL group, yet this team under AW doesn’t take the night off. Perhaps this is it - they have truly learned to win, and to kill weaker opponents and never take the boot off of the back of the net.
The next two weekends will really tell us if I’m right.
God, isn’t it glorious to be a Gooner?
October 24th, 2007 at 1:39 am
What a cakewalk. It’s funny how flat the game was until the second goal at 25m. Arsenal didn’t look particular threatening or inventive, just moving from side to side, trying to find a way in and in no hurry either. But the second half was a lethal blitz of quick passing and movement. We’ve really learned how to punish tame opponents.
The weird thing was it didn’t feel like a superlative Arsenal performance, i.e., the team didn’t feel like they were playing flat out, or being remotely pushed to the limit. Which is inevitable, I guess, when there’s no tension to the final scoreline, so early on, but the next two games will be a different story.
I can’t wait. They will let us see the depth and strength of this side (specifically the defence) when put under some serious pressure.
October 24th, 2007 at 4:30 am
Just saw the whole game.
Why wasn’t Hleb given the second goal?
Why can’t Hleb score more like his second goal?
How did we manage 3 yellow cards?
Wenger knows Walcott is a striker but has been using him on the wings to exploit his pace, something which is missing in the rest of our midfield.
Eboue was good but he struggles to produce inconsistently. Unlike Ade, he doesn’t give 100% either, so it won’t be easy for him to hold down a place.
Bendtner needs more games. He is very talented and I would be gutted to see him go. He is suffering now because Ade is in such a purple patch.
October 24th, 2007 at 4:32 am
Regarding the previous article on Gerrard’s comments on Walcott, was it Walcott’s fault that he was taken to the WC? It was Sven’s call. If anything, Gerrard should be lashing out at Sven. But he doesn’t have the balls to do that. So he turns on a 17-year old. Bravo!!!
October 24th, 2007 at 4:44 am
6-0! That wasn’t a game, that was a mutha-fuckin’ show!
Aleks Hleb is World Class! Fred, I know you’ve been critical with his lack of goals but he’s one of the best players in the world. On Fabregas’ goal he had two defenders on him yet he kept his nerve and found the pass that beat his two markers and Fabregas’ marker to get Fab the ball. Who else can do that? You can count them on one hand and Hleb is one of them. World Class.
I told you guys when we first signed him that when he shows up to play that he is absolutely un-playable. He’s gotten even better since coming to Arsenal where he doesn’t have to be completely focused and still hurt you. If his finishing improves then he becomes a POTY candidate. It’s just so hard to score goals from that wide position.
After Hleb went off the game got kind of boring and I almost fell asleep. I stayed awake hoping for a Walcott hat trick but it never came. The only bad thing was Eboue gave the ball away far too cheaply. He had some nice plays and he, as well as Walcott, needed to play the full ninety minutes but half of our turnovers were because of him. He needs a few more games.
@ nipuna, Flamini and Clichy got yellows for bad challenges and rightfully so. I don’t know why Hleb got a yellow.
October 24th, 2007 at 5:19 am
I meant - why did we have to make bad challenges in a game like this? Even I don’t know why Hleb got a yellow. Seemed to happen soon after the 6th goal.
October 24th, 2007 at 5:42 am
Notice that this season it takes us only half a game to get over the international break.
0-1 at half time at the Lane
3-1 at full time
3-0 in the next game vs Seville
0-0 at half time vs Bolton
2-0 at full time
7-0 in the next game vs Slavia
October 24th, 2007 at 6:38 am
BRILLIANT! No other word could describe our performance of yesterday. Since I was expecting a early start to office today…had decided to watch only a part of the match (UCL match timings here in India are not exactly ideal for working people :D)…but the performance was so beautiful that I could not take my eyes off the TV
..and at the end of the match..i was wishing that it could have gone on for some more time.
Although the media focus has been on Theo..my MOTM was definetly Hleb…he was absolutely on song yesterday…and when on song..he is one of the best in the world. Have been a huge fan of his ever since he joined the team..and finally glad to see his efforts getting noticed.
Won’t go into an extensive review of the match…would just take too long
All the players impressed today..even the subs…as one of the commentators was saying…it almost looked like there was no change whatsoever to the syle of play..so quickly did the subs settle in.
My favourite goal..is the goal by Hleb again..where he first faked a shot and then shot with the other foot…i was on my feet and clapping :D.
The goal by Cesc ..building up with a series of passes and then a great little pass by Theo for Cesc to shoot…was Arsenal at their very best ….used to have the same feeling with the invincibles…and this team is going about in the same way.
Now comes the real test of character facing Liverpool and Man Utd….if we end up with wins against them..then i’ll seriously start to believe that we are destined for the trophy this season..so far i’ve been keeping myself in check
I wouldn’t mind so much if we end up losing fair and square…but if it comes down to a refereering decision like Clattenberg…hmm..then i’ll be really devastated…and i think it will affect the team a lot more than a straight loss. All this is speculation…but i’m still to get over the total collapse of the invincibles after that Rooney dive for that penalty which ended our run.
But ..right now i’m absolutely enjoying the football being played..long may it continue
Cheers,
Wayne
October 24th, 2007 at 7:13 am
Amazing performance - this team will only get better and better. To be honest, Slavia shit in their pants and were completely out of their depth, but that’s what Arsenal can do to teams.
I am reticent to go too crazy as we have Liverpool and Man Utd coming up - positive results in those two matches (not necessarily wins) and I would have to say that Wenger’s 3rd team has arrived early.
Wenger is conjuring up something even better and more enduring than any other team he has created. This team can also improve quite a bit still - Diarra for Flamini would be another big step up eventually. I am very concerned about Diarra leaving, but just cannot see any reason why Wenger would drop Flamini - it just wouldn’t be fair and would send out the wrong message to the squad.
It’s a shame that Bendtner will leave, and he will - he’s too impatient to sit on the bench and too good as well. Just hope we get some top money for him because he can be a real quality player.
October 24th, 2007 at 7:29 am
=It’s a shame that Bendtner will leave, and he will - he’s too impatient to sit on the bench and too good as well.=
Are you his agent?
October 24th, 2007 at 7:53 am
Magnificent 7! I agree about Bendtner, I think it would be good for him to stay.
Walcott for England!
October 24th, 2007 at 10:25 am
The keeper situation is getting kind of scary. Lehmann is losing his patience. I’ve always supported Lehmann but he can’t be allowed to mess up the team spirit with his comments. The problem is he’s the best keeper at Arsenal and he knows it. More important is he’s fully aware that Wenger knows who the best keeper is.
A great keeper can help determine whether your team is championship material or not. Look no further than AC Milan this season to see what a great team with a not so great keeper looks like. Is this team strong enough to win a championship with a marginal keeper? Is Almunia strong enough to help this team win a championship? Wenger’s got a tough predicament on his hands and I hope he can work this out.
October 24th, 2007 at 10:51 am
Very good points Josh. Few championship winning teams could get away without a top notch ‘keeper.
And u nailed it right on the head - the biggest problem is - Jens is the BEST ‘keeper among our 3, and he knew that. I bet AW knows that as well. That’s the problem when he finds himself on the bench.
If the quality between Almunia and Lehmann are close, then there wouldn’t be too much a problem, to the worst just get rid of him in January.
but the thing is - right now things everything is running fine for us. Yet in a long football season, anything can happen. When the wind starts to swift, when the team starts struggling, and when the defence is going to face heavier pressure than they been facing so far, would Almunia be able to handle it?
quite frankly most of Almunia’s clean sheets so far he didn’t really have much to do, as oppostion hardly got a shot on target. The Bolton match for instance, we could have played Kolo Toure in goal, he too could have come away with a clean sheet.
October 24th, 2007 at 11:23 am
“The Eboue flick for our last goal was a beauty.”
just marvelous…i loved the crowd reaction the second he did it, everyone knew that was gonna lead to a goal
October 24th, 2007 at 11:29 am
I’m sure Wenger has a plan to get Lehmann back in the lineup to see how he responds. Jens has always been the type to play better when he has a chip on his shoulder. Wenger is putting a big chip on Jens right now knowing it will push him to be more focused then he was to begin the season.
As far as the game goes, I only got to catch highlights, but it was nice to see the boys light up the scoresheet without RVP. Hopefully this game will boost Theo’s confidence, and allow us to see him start playing up towards the enormous potential he has.
October 24th, 2007 at 12:31 pm
wayne #27. Agree 100% that I would rather lose fair/square than another game to a diving rooney.
Russia2-1England- Rooney’s penalty that he gave up. He sees the other player falling down and then he takes off like he is jumping into a pool. What a joke.
October 24th, 2007 at 12:33 pm
I’m not so sure Lehmann will be put back on the pitch anytime too soon. Arsene doesn’t generally replace players that are doing well like Almunia is at the moment. Same thing happened to Gilberto - he can’t get back on the pitch. Plus, Lehmann has completely lost the plot: http://arseblog.com/columns/2007/10/23/auf-wiedersehen-jens/ The quotes are pretty damning.
October 24th, 2007 at 12:40 pm
Hi Nip, Wayne and LDE,
From ur posts, I figure u chaps live in India and I should be coming to India over the weekend. Will be staying at Bangalore so i’d like to know if there are good pubs where I can get to watch me favorite team and on which tv channels.
Cheers mates! Fantastic performance by the lads yesterday…nuff said!!!
October 24th, 2007 at 2:21 pm
Wow! What a performance. I hope this can give Theo some confidence that he can maybe translate to some from for the Prem. Now that Mercy! Mercy! Robin Van Persie! is out we need guys like Theo & Eduardo to pitch in. Big Game on this weekend, any ideas if Fox Soccer Channel will air it?
October 24th, 2007 at 2:36 pm
yes, Arsenal/Liverpool will be on FSC
i’m disappointed to see that the Arsenal/Man United game will not be
October 24th, 2007 at 2:45 pm
It’s gonna be on Setanta, which i think you gotta pay about and extra $20 a month for ( On DirecTv ). Booo i say. I guess i gotta see if i can find a pub in Phoenix that will show it.
October 24th, 2007 at 2:55 pm
This is not the right place for Jens anymore and I think it is time for him to go. He has always been supremely confident, but now I think he has crossed the line and is displaying an arrogance that threatens to disrupt a team that is firing on all cylinders. Arsene often talks about the importance of staying humble, and has shown that at this point in time he ready to give the younger players the benefit of the doubt. I don’t think AW will tolerate the dissension and would not be surprised if he “let” Lehman leave in January.
Also, I agree with others on here who are eager to see what Diarra and Bendtner can contribute as I believe their potential is huge. They should get a run in next Wednesday against Sheffield. It will be interesting to see how they do, and to see if they can work themselves into more upcoming EPL and CL matches.
October 24th, 2007 at 2:56 pm
I’m really confident going into the Liverpool game. 1st off, We have no rotation problems! It will be interesting to see what side we trot out. If GB19 makes it out b/c of his experience? I’m just glad i don’t have to wake up at 5 a.m. to catch the game ( Ahhh World Cup memories ).
October 24th, 2007 at 2:59 pm
I agree USGunner, Jens needs to be “let” go indeed. Had a great run, thanks a bunch, but you need to keep that head on straight and not let it balloon.Send him to Schalke 04 or another German side. Ditto on Diarra and Bendtner.
October 24th, 2007 at 3:42 pm
Great win!! Bring on Shitterpool!
October 24th, 2007 at 4:11 pm
@ joshoad: your comment 31:
actually that is not true. dida has won 2 champions leagues, played 3 finals, and 5 semifinals, and he has also won 2 serie As i think. and he contributed significantly to all these triumphes. even buffon hasnt won that much! so he definitely isnt a bad keeper. he is just getting old and senile like lehmann. he admittedly has a pinch of david james in him….but on the raw nights he packs it in and delivers….usually anyway.
all in all i definitely dont agree that a championship winning side needs a top, top keeper. valdes is in NO way a top keeper. in fact i would compare valdes to short and thin paul robinson LOL. and i dont rate van der sar that much either (at least not the van der sar of the last 3, 4 years). and both barca and Man U have found ways to triumph recently.
funnily enough all the acclaimed “best keepers” play behind highly defensive teams. from oliver kahn in his hey days, to buffon at juve to cech at chelsea.
October 24th, 2007 at 4:17 pm
T’was a sublime performance with Slavia Prague playing Washington Generals (or New York Nationals for you youngsters) to Arsenal’s Harlem Globetrotters.
The first true tests of the season come this weekend and the one following.
C’mon you Gunners!
October 24th, 2007 at 7:17 pm
Liverpool lost to Besitkas today. Bully-boy Gerrard was last seen dragging his sorry ass off the pitch to console himself in his Bentley. I cannot wait for Sunday because Liverpool should be in a right mood. Clattenburg won’t be working that game. I hope Halsey won’t be in the building either. Torres will be in a fitness race. It sets up well for us. We just have to do our part.
October 24th, 2007 at 11:48 pm
I have been grinning like a fool since yesterday’s result. What a game! Many in the team had a really good game but I have to day Hleb for me was MOTM. The guy was just a terror. Pace, ball control, vision you name it this guy was just awesome. His goal was absolutely briliant. positions his body as if he was going to aim for the far post and slots it in to the near post sending the keeper the wrong way…..absolutely brilliant! Walcott was awesome but I hope Wenger starts him on the bench on Sunday to protect him a bit. That match will be very different from yesterdays and I dont want anything to knock his confidence after such a high.
Can wait for Sunday!! Go Gunners!
October 25th, 2007 at 2:35 am
@Nonso I live in Mumbai (Bombay) so don’t have too much of an idea regarding the pub scene in Bangalore…although there should definetly be screenings of the match in a “Sports Bar” outlet in the city.
In any case the matches will be broadcast live on ESPN/Star Sports Channels which are available almost everywhere in India. You can check http://www.espnstar.com for TV schedules and match timings
Cheers,
Wayne
October 25th, 2007 at 5:18 am
@Wayne. Thanx bro. I should be fine then. Just nice to know I can keep up with matches in India. Too bad I won’t be going to Mumbai…would have been nice to hang out with a fellow gooner but u never know.
Thanx once more…cheers
October 25th, 2007 at 12:20 pm
Honestly, I have to say, I’ll take a 1-1 draw at Anfield. Yes, Pool is playing shite right now, but u cant underestimate them and be too confident. As of current, everyone wants to beat arsenal especially at home. And hopefully, Theo gets some playing time and show the player he is to Gerrard.
October 25th, 2007 at 1:44 pm
There should no other posts on this site until after the ‘pool match because i just want to reflect, rewatch and rediscuss this awesome game. what a game for an arsenal fan. sheer beauty. i will be rewatching this game in the offseason when i’m bored.
Theo got the press… and deservedly so, but Hleb MOTM no doubt:
- 1-0, created by Hleb… great piece of dribbling and ball control.
- 2-0, i dont know why UEFA didnt give it to him.. it was on target. Fabregas got to keep his deflection vs Sevilla, but why not Hleb?
- 4-0, nice run into the channel and excellent finish. Hleb can do those cutbacks at speed all day long. The ball sticks to his feet like magnets.
- 5-0, delivered the perfect ball to send Theo through
- 6-0, ran right past his marker after the corner to feed Adebeyor, who continued the play…
not bad for 60 minutes on the pitch!
October 25th, 2007 at 2:14 pm
@Nonso: Apologies …yeah me too in Mumbai , Nipuna lives in Bangalore though.. so if he replies to this thread you might want to catch up with him.
@Wayne: The Sports Bar thing is shit expensive though isnt it…talking about the one at Phoenix Mills in Parel…
