Chelsea are in Group A with Roma, Bordeaux and CFR 1907 Cluj.

The other groups….

Group B: Inter, Werder, Panathinaikos, Anorthosis
Group C: Barcelona, Sporting, Basel, Shakhtar

dont know how good porto is this or last season outside their league, but i would put all bets into arsenal and fenerbahce going through.

and if liverpool continues to play they have in their last two CL games, then PSV and A Madrid should have no problems.

  2. live_dont_exist Says:

    A B C E H are straightforward.

    D is the toughest

    G and H are tricky

  3. joshuad Says:

If Liverpool don’t start playing better football, then they are not going through.

We should be good enough to get through our group with relative ease. It will probably be us and Fernebache. Turkey is going to be tougher to cope with than Dynamo Kiev or Porto.

Group is the Group of Death, then F is a close second. Bayern, Lyon, and Fiorentina are all clubs that play very good football and are capable of beating anyone on their day.

The wife just sent me the West Brom, FC Twente 1st leg, and the Fulham game. Gotta go and see what all the fuss is about from Saturday.

    Fred Replied:

The chance of Liverpool not getting out of their group is about zero. They live a permanently charmed life.

    Mazza Replied:

Geez, Josh, sure you wanna put yourself through that? Back to back? Make sure they’re are no razors or ropes about.

    Seattlegooner Replied:

It’s funny - I have a friend who is a Liverpool supporter, and every year we have the same conversation about how if they don’t start playing better they won’t get out of the group stages. And every year they play just well enough to get to the next round.

  4. ChicagoGooner Says:

Arsenal should be top team in this group. Who will qualify second could be any of the rest, the way I see it. Will be interesting to see which three off Zenit, Juve, and Real dont get out of H, with BATE being the whipping boy.

D also looks to be exciting. On paper Liverpool are easily the best team in the group, but in actuality all 4 teams have a great shot of qualifying, The top spot looks to be up for grabs.

Yet, in the back our minds, I think we all realize that the Fucking Scousers will get that Round of 16 birth that they do not deserve. With a budget far surpassing that of the other three teams, they will probably play the least inspiring football of the lot, yet advance in spite of themselves. So it goes when Pool are in the Champions League; match after match, year after year Liverpool are always tossed a life preserver at the very moment when they have done everything in their power not to deserve one.

    Goonerade Replied:

I agree, Liverpool is when mediocre football meets an extensive budget.

  5. Goonerade Says:

We should have no problem winning our group. Fenerbache shouldn’t have a problem capturing 2nd.

    Fairly straightforward predictions:
    A: Chelsea—Roma
    B: Inter—Werder
    C: Barcelona—Sporting
    D: Liverpool—Atletico
    E: ManU—Villareal
F: Bayern—Florentina(I have no faith in Lyon)
    G: Arsenal—Fenerbache
    H: Real—Juve

  6. Andez Says:

In terms of AWAY trips, where the glamour European big guns do not want to go most are - Russia (in particular during winter), Turkey and Greece. it’s not going to be easy when we travelled to Kiev and Fenerbache. while Porto are a very solid side in Europe.

It’s definitely a much tougher group than it looks on paper.

The key will be our home games, a maximum 9 points is almost a must.

we will go through, along with Porto I reckon.

    Sachin Replied:

errr…I know you meant Ukraine up there :)

But I dread these trips to either Moscow or Kiev..where the orange ball sometimes comes into play..argh.

    Andez Replied:

oh yup haha! when i was growing up, the Dinamo Kiev used to be an awesome force, virtually making up the entire USSR national team. luckily these days it’s a different story.

  7. Mazza Says:

Champions league has become a glorified UEFA Cup. Basically no real difference between pot two and pot four.

  8. ctpa Says:

What’s good about CL is that teams have to play attacking football at home and that should be an advantage for us. That is if we bring our “A” game. Right now some players are are in poor form: RVP most notably. Some others I really can’t tell: Bendtner for one.

We need some games where we are comfortably ahead so that we can get Wilshere and Ramsey some playing time and confidence.

    Way off topic: http://www.channel4.com/sport/football_italia/aug28i.html.

Is there a script for this BS in the “Football Players” handbook? “It all happen so fast”, “A dream move”, “A step up”. Nauseating drivel.

    CaribKid Replied:

He is saying all the right things without offending anyone. Very mature, multi-lingual young man who will fit in where ever he goes.

Give him a break. Most Arsenal fans have frequently chastised him at every turn although he did his best and was true to the colors without complaining when he was benched. He deserves a chance and will do much better at Milan where the game is slower.

    Kiwi Replied:

    Agree 100%.
I’m fascinated that there have been so many ‘hidden’ admirers of Senderos out there. Over the last couple of days a lot of the regular bloggers who I enjoy reading have clearly shown their admiration for young Senderos.

I rekon it’s one of those cases where it became popular to bag Phil, once that starts everything is viewed through that lense. I’ve said before - I wish him well. I’ll be stoked if he establishes himself as a respected performer.

    Andez Replied:

yes kiwi, when i read through some other sites, suprsingly i found many bloggers actually have a certain extend of admiration to big Phil, unlike here, we got ppl calling him clown.

i honestly don’t understand why he’s so hated here at ArsenalAmerica. maybe because he’s clumsyness. image is everything these days i supposed. in terms of costly mistakes, other defenders might have made just as much, yet none being highlighted as often as Sendy.

i like Senderos’ attitude. clearly he wanted badly to make it. but at a side like Arsenal where you got a team full of athletes, Sendy’s clumsyness will always make him looking bad. so i guess that’s that. wish him all the best at his new club. and hope he will make it. he’s a good pro.

  9. Sachin Says:

Group F should be interesting as well. But as far as Liverpool is concerned, they need not worry. Good old magic of Anfield will carry them thru so that the commentators can keep on saying something like “these magical Anfield european nights” or some stuff. I often wonder where that Anfield magic goes to when Man Utd come to town and sneaks away shutting Liverpool out. Also, in Group D, all the teams are capable of shooting themselves in the foot, so each has a decent chance of going thru more so because of the other’s problems.

Has anyone noticed that Hleib has been on the Barca bench for most part and has said he is having problems adjusting to the language barrier.

    Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha

The Arsenal curse may be striking again.

    Kiwi Replied:

Early days I guess, but I think many of us felt Hleb was very much a player that needed a team to accept his limitations. Barca don’t do acceptance - you front up or you **** off. Sorry Hlebie - for both you and us.

    Mazza Replied:

Geez, give him a break. The season hasn’t even started yet.

Iniesta stats are just as bad and Hleb is just as good as him. They’ll accept and even embrace Hleb as long as Etoo, Henry and Messi stick the ball in the net.

But yes, like all players who leave us, he will notice little things that he got at Arsenal that he doesn’t get at Barca.

    Kiwi Replied:

Fair point about Barca having the quality to finish off……let’s see how he goes.
Although Arsenal & Barca are at polar extremes……..Wenger indulges, Barca are savage. When Barca struggle, Hleb will look irrelevant and they’ll bench then flick him. Can he last 2 years?

    Mazza Replied:

I don’t think they are that savage to be honest. If players like Santiago Ezquerro and Eidur Gudjohnsen can float around doing practically zero for two or three years then Hleb can do the same.

I don’t think they are expecting a great deal from him anyway, and their ire would be directed more towards Guardiola.

Anyhow, Hleb is just a straight out class player who they will take to their hearts if things flow along nicely, which they should with Messi fit and Etoo firing. In Spain they can appreciate a flair, ‘romantic’ player more than the Brits and stats-orientated Americans. Hleb’s skill used to alienate alot of Arsenal fans for some strange reason, even taking into account the justifiable frustration at his reluctance to shoot.

    CaribKid Replied:

I knew that would get out out of the woodwork Mazza :)

  11. ctpa Says:

    Rant:
When Emerson and Ronaldo ‘retired’ to the AC Milan, I made a generalized statement that called the Serie A an Italian burial ground (as in Tarzan’s elephant burial ground or Miami being a burial ground). Now some ‘clever’ wit named Oliver Kay has stolen my reference to the Serie A for a piece in Times Online to castigate the Serie A in comparison to the EPL. Italian football may be slow and technical as opposed to fast and sloppy but they did win the WC and they were present and accounted for at Euro 2008. I believe Capello is of Italian heritage and is now in charge of England’s hopes and dreams. I think he should grow a pair when it comes to England selection and pick players who show a mastery of ball possession but hey that’s just me. I can pick on the Serie A and AC Milan in a blog but old Olly really stepped in it when he tried to elevate the EPL above Serie A. Clueless motherf**ker. Sometimes the sum is better than its parts a**hole and sports are cyclical in who is up and who is down. Does it even matter? Flamini and Senderos are happy campers and not ready for the geriatric ward yet.

Another ‘clever journalist’ stole my phrase of “tasty bits” when referring to Flamini, Hleb and Adebayor being devoured by other so-called big clubs after the trading window opened. I do believe journalists have their go-fers scouring our blogs for things they can steal to prop themselves up. Why they would be looking here is anyone’s guess. The evidence for this though is the Rodrigo Palacios rumor that spread like wild fire some time back.

  12. Kiwi Says:

I reckon we have a proper challenge in our CL group.
    It doesn’t look a shoe-in at all.

We don’t know how teams will be travelling when the games come around, but on the surface away ties spread across Europe in Portugal, Ukraine and Turkey are anything but a stroll.

If we can’t put out a decent side, we could easily slip up against Kiev and Fenerbache - with a draw or a tight loss.

I guess I get a bit philosophical about the CL these days - I think the onus is on us to be good enough to cope with whatever comes along. If we get dumped…..our lookout.

I really hope Wenger changes his attitude to the LC and FAC this year. He won’t, but if I just ’say it enough’ and ‘believe’ and maintain my ‘values’ maybe it’ll happen. We need a jolly trophy. Spurs of all clubs got the LC last year when it was ours for the taking - and Chelsea the year before.

    Goonerade Replied:

We’re not that desperate for a trophy that we need to reduce ourselves to targeting the League Cup. I hope AW continues to send on the youngsters so they can develop their confidence more than anything else(Denilson especially).

We’ll be accomplishing more by developing them than winning a essentially meaningless cup. Let Tottenham win the LC to help them forget another sub-par year in the EPL.

  13. macmac123 Says:

Yeah, let’s wish the Swiss Sieve all the best. Nice enough guy, but boy did he put the willies up me everytime he got ready to make a simple clearance.

Meanwhile, more pressingly, any encouraging thoughts for our chances against Newcastle. I’m dreading a labored draw as things stand, but hoping Cesc will continue to get everyone to raise their game, and Nasri settles his stomach.

And oh yeah - Adebayor finally gets a shot on fucking target!

    CaribKid Replied:

Macmac123, Ade get a shot on target? Why not rant about RVP who has missed the most sitters this term.

    Kiwi Replied:

I started to write the same reply…..!!

  14. Kiwi Says:

Mazza, on Hleb, you’re right some players just exist at Barca. I guess it depends on the fans expectations. If they perceive you were bought as a solution provider or just a squad player.

    Mazza Replied:

Watched a few of his pre-season games and he looked quality.

It’s so easy to make him very effective. He gives you the ball in space, he then spins off and makes a clever run between defenders which makes it easy to find him, and you then pass to him leaving him through on goal or able to cut back. But no, players - no matter how good they are or what reputations they have- are totally incapable of doing this relatively simple operation. Watch him this season when you can and you’ll see what I mean. Players are just programmed not to play the simple return ball, except him and a select few others. Even Fabregas couldn’t do it.

That’s why two Hleb’s would be great to watch, because that his speciality. They would eventually Hleb their way within ten yards of the goal with no option but to shoot.

    Sachin Replied:

I have to say your admiration of Hleb is quite amazing to read. I don’t mean anything negative by it, but it is interesting to read someone talk with such passion about a player they genuinely admire. There were some games where I was floored by him and thought him to be a genius. But unfortunately, I have a bit more frustrating memories which cloud my appreciation. Although, given what I saw last year, I do think that Flamini, Cesc and Hleb, when on song, made an amazing trio to watch. Each for their own roles. I used to not like Flamini much but after he had made the make shift transition to left-back, my appreciation grew & last year, I loved his contribution. Although, I do wonder could Nasri have existed with this trio in midfield? Something that one will never find out.

    Mazza Replied:

It’s strange, there seems to be a hardcore set of fans like myself who feel the same away about his abilities as I do, but mostly the opinion of him is similar to yourself. The “he’s talented but…” crowd.

It depends what floats your boat I suppose.

    Mazza Replied:

Nasri maybe could have survived. He plays a bit slower and more deliberate than Rosicky and Hleb. They’re more manic. However, because of his attributes, he’s my cup of tea and already one of my favourites.

    Kiwi Replied:

Respect your view Mazza. At the end of the day one of the simple joys of football is to watch a player that we think is really special……and we’re all going to have differing views on who that is - viva la difference!

Sachin, from my very limited sightings of Nasri he looks a Wenger wide-boy. Nice on the ball, keeps his head up, in control, courage to attack the goal, I’m very hopeful.

Perhaps the most frustrating aspect of this new season for me is the sense that instead of reaching a clearer view on Wenger’s Mk III - we’ve moved even deeper into transition.

This is no where more evident than in the wide-boys. Wenger loves the wide midfielder role. It is integral to his brand of how football should be played. The wide-boys are intelligent creators and support goal-scorers not traditional wingers. The wide-boys cut infield and let the attacking fullbacks overlap and fill the space down the flank.

Mk I had Overmars & Parlour, Mk II had Pires & Ljungberg, Mk III had Hleb & Rosicky and we’re now on a revision of Mk III. With Hleb at Barca and Rosicky so woefully unreliable fitness-wise it’s essentially back to the drawing board.

The other area that has failed to materialise is the striking duo. Anelka/Bergkamp, Henry/Bergkamp…….last year should have seen van Persie ascending the ultimate throne - the annointed one - the successor to Henry as the shaper of the Arsenal striking duo. Not so. Instead Adebayor took his chance and shouldered the reponsibility. But again, it wasn’t really the step forward that Wenger wanted. A dominant van Persie would add that ‘on the edge’ creative goal scoring factor. Again like Rosicky he has been almost irrelevant to Arsenal.

So, here we are, back in transition. Looking again for answers in attack and wide midfield. A plethora of injured and young players cluttering the attacking squad. A fit effective and firing van Persie and Rosicky would make an enormous difference - but what odds on that?

    Mazza Replied:

    CaribKid Replied:

I am one of those fans Mazza and it translates to my dislike of the underachiever. He has such sublime skills and does so little with it, it becomes sort of a wasted talent. Do you remember that kid in high school that was voted as the most likely to succeed but ended up in prison years later for selling dope? That’s who Hleib reminds me of.

With his natural technique and talent he should be mentioned in the same breath as a Ronaldinho, Kaka, Ronaldo or Messi, but at his age he does not seem destined to make that transition and will always just be known as a potentially great player.

Theo is kind of at that crossroads and only the next 2-3 years will determine whether he is a great or just one of the many with so much wasted promise.

    Sachin Replied:

Actually I was going to use the example from the film Good Will Hunting where the title character played by Matt Damon was more intelligent than a lot of pretend guys around him but was not doing enough with it. I thought the same with Hleb. He has more talent than most players out there will ever have and with his skills should one day be European player of the year. But I am not sure he will get there. If I am proven wrong, then I won’t mind at all because I would still see skillful players getting accolades.

    Mazza Replied:

Can just imagine Fabregas cornering Hleb after missing a chance and saying”It’s not your fault, it’s not your fault…it’s not your fault.”

    rocka Replied:

    hehe

  15. Mazza Says:

Seen as deep and meaninful quotes are in en vogue, I thought I would show a quote that is more earthy, gritty and less airy-fairy, and is actually relevant for a change.

    Danny Fizman:

“I hear all the time that we have no money, but I just wish someone would take the time to look at our accounts. We do not need extra investment. This is a proper business which produces its own cash and lives or dies by its performances. Our net payments are £20million and the revenue increase from the new stadium is close to £50million. Explain to me how that stadium is a drain on the club, when it produces an extra £30million a year.

“This constant suggestion that the stadium is bleeding us dry is crap. The reality is our wage bill is very similar to Manchester United, substantially above Liverpool and substantially below Chelsea - but that is to be expected. We pay good salaries, but we pay them more evenly, so we do not have extremes of very high and very low wage-earners. There is an ethos of a team effort.”

    LDE. Now we know.

    CaribKid Replied:

Thanks Mazza, I have been preaching the same since I looked at the financial’s some months back. Arsenal could easily spend 50-60 mill without having to borrow money or dig into their reserve account.

I hope this will once and for all stop the cynics among us who keep blaming the Board and making excuses for Arsene when he does not acquire players.

    It is what it is!

Arsene has a youth plan, is steadfastly pursuing it and the only choices we have is to accept it and go with the built in vagaracies or turn our back on The Arsenal.

    ctpa Replied:

Here, here and stop all that whining which gives me a headache.

    vibe4arsenal Replied:

Finally, one of the monster myths of Arsenal America slain.

Mazza, mind if I re-post the quote as my own in a few months? ;-)

    live_dont_exist Replied:

Yep we do. Thats what he’s gonna say though. But yeah…there probably is truth there just not as much as he is saying. So yes .. it is AW’s money if he wants to spend it.. that’s nothing new we didnt know though.

But yes we do have the cash to spend if we did want to.. obviously there is still alimit. Its probably somewhere in between between what DF says and what AW does. That’s just me.

  16. Kiwi Says:

Agree CaribKid, on Walcott being at a crossroads of sorts. I have struggled for some time to see where he fits in Wenger’s view of football. A rapier striker, a creative forward or a wide midfielder? That’s realy the choices as far as long-term meaningful roles go.

His combination of skills and physical stature seem to me to be an uncomfortable alliance with Wenger’s view of football. Hardly an Anelka or Henry, hardly a Bergkamp, and hardly a Pires. Of course the answer is he is what he is - a Walcott. But where does a Walcott fit?

  17. Kiwi Says:

The real oil from the Fiz…….soak it up.

  18. Fred Says:

Re: Hlebbie. Make no mistake the Barca fans are dastardly and savage. Say what you may about English fans but they are very polite.

I have sat in English stadiums and I have been in Spain … there is a vast difference and Barca are one of the worst - due to an extra arrogant stretch. The hell they gave Rivaldo was legendary…despite him pretty much being a one-man band in those days.

And Iniesta will definitely get far more leeway - he is Catalan and they never boo a Catalan. Look at Valdes … that most mediocre of keepers. And thats being kind to him.

The CL draw is a non-issue. The 2nd round knock out stage is where its at.

  19. joshuad Says:

As for Senderos, I used to be the leader of the “Cindyros Boo-Boy Band”. Even in the run to the CL final when everyone was praising his performances, I mentioned that Flamini made him look better than he actually was. Actually, they were both out of their league back there and worked well together as a team, covering for each other. But it was plain for me to see that he was not nearly as good as people were saying.

However, in fairness, I had nothing bad to say about his performances last season. He did well whenever called upon to include the Milan match when Kolo got hurt in the first ten minutes. Even when Kolo was off to the AFCON and everyone was slamming Wenger for not bringing in cover (in January; NUTS!) he ensured we didn’ t miss Kolo. Even in the Portsmouth game when he got a red card; I thougt it was a good red card (if there is such a thing) as Kanu would have surely scored. Goals change games and he prevented a goal. I don’t think he meant to get sent off; Kanu was just a bit too clever for him.

However, when he gave up those goals to Hyypia and Torres in the Champions League, for me, that sealed his doom. I think that’s the day Wenger said, “I’m done with Senderos”. Wenger never blames players but on that day, I think he secretly blamed Senderos. That experience can only make him stronger. We’ll see how he does.

  20. nipuna Says:

I think it is a very tough draw for Arsenal. We struggle in Russia and Turkish opposition is never easy. If we are not careful, we might struggle.

    Sachin Replied:

Technically, it is Ukraine now :) But yes those oppositions are not easy.

  21. Kiwi Says:

    Goonerade,

“We’re not that desperate for a trophy that we need to reduce ourselves to targeting the League Cup. I hope AW continues to send on the youngsters so they can develop their confidence more than anything else(Denilson especially).

We’ll be accomplishing more by developing them than winning a essentially meaningless cup. Let Tottenham win the LC to help them forget another sub-par year in the EPL.”

A matter of opinion I guess. Never suggested we target the LC, I’m more-so suggesting that throwing it away is a tad silly given we get into winning positions in the LC whilst we aren’t exactly seriously competing for the big ones we do ‘target’. This concept seems to have been extended to the FAC…..I just don’t think we’re anywhere near good enough to be limiting our winning options.

This young side has never tasted winning. Can’t be a bad thing to wet the appetite.

I may be in the minority, but the League Cup for me is not meaningless. If we win the LC this year and come 4th I’d be happier than not winning it and coming 2nd or 3rd.

  22. joshuad Says:

Do you guys believe this one?

  23. CaribKid Says:

Don’t know what to believe anymore as we have had a whole new batch of Arsenal acquisition rumors the past week.

Hughes admitted a few months back that Corluka might leave although he want’s him to stay and the consensus amount was 8 mill. The money is right, the talent is there and he has EPL experience.

    Hope it happens.

  24. ChicagoGooner Says:

Not sure about that, Josh. I’m not sure if I believe this one either:

    http://www.football365.com/story/0,17033,8652_4063918,00.html

I don’t know if the Arsenal board would really approve something like this, but I’m glad AW rejected it if this is true. £30 million is $60 million, remember. Is any person on this planet really worth that much?

  25. macmac123 Says:

Carib, I agree VanP is still a shadow of his former self, but he wasn’t the one playing footsie with the transfer market all summer as if he was the finished article.

    I’m just frustrated and venting.

    CaribKid Replied:

    No problem Macmac,

I understand completely. I’ve been doing the same recently.

Having watched Arsenal play “Non-Arsenal” football for their first 3 games of the season, including a loss to Fulham, has definitely set a bad tone for our squad. Even our 4-0 victory over Twente was not done the Arsenal way but by a series of good individual performances over a weakened, young team playing away from home.

  26. nipuna Says:

Liverpool signing Riera means Barry stays at Villa means Alonso not moving to Arsenal?

    Goonerade Replied:

It looks that way. Even though Xabi Alonso is a solid midfielder, hes probably not the best pick for us right now anyways(even though cesc says it is :P). Hes an attacking midfielder, we need a defensive midfielder to cover for cesc when he goes forward. Also, he can’t play CL for us this year anyways.(I haven’t really watched Xabi play too much so if hes not an attacking midfielder like I hear all the time then feel free to correct me).

If this £30 rumour is true then I’m sure everyone is in agreement that theres no way we should spend even half that kind of money for a holding midfielder.

Benzema to replace the ever-injured and struggling RvP would be nice ;)

    ryecatcher773 Replied:

Except Benzema is oft injured himself as well…

I honestly never figured on Barry or Alonso coming in. How many of AW’s transfers in the past have come EPL teams (with the bizarre exception of Silvestre last week).

I think there is still something brewing with the de Guzman rumor… regardless of what his agent is saying.

    ctpa Replied:

12mil for a 20yo MF is a bit much. He does have an eye for goal though. I watched the youtube football scouting report on the player and noted some big scores in those Feynoord games. What was De Guzman doing in his zone to keep the ball out of his net :)

  27. jdl Says:

When all is said and done, group G will prove to be the toughest.

  28. GunningSteve Says:

Watching Zenit play Man U.- Juve & Real watch out.

I respect the idea of youth with Arsenal breeding but I don’t fully buy it. The Bischoff signing doesn’t make sense to me. Sagna came straight into the squad last year. It does make sense that a DM signing should have the right style though.

    Goonerade Replied:

Yes, that was a good game. I’m sure ManU is missing c.ronaldo.

Paul Scholes should consider a career in volleyball. That hand ball spike into the top left corner was impressive and shameless haha.
