After watching Nasri and Fabregas together, they seem to compliment each other brilliantly. Cesc is able to have the vision to get that long pass in to a small space and then with Nasri being an attack minded midfielder is brilliant in the box. Samir has a knack for being in the right place for either a one touch pass or a shot. I am excited to see what these two can do together this year. Also I am brand new to this site and I am glad that there are other gooners in the U.S. Thanks for allowing me to be a part of the group.

I like Nasri too but to be fair Cesc works well with everyone. Even Denilson and “pass-master” Eboue look good.
I suggest that Wenger puts out extremely weak teams for the very first match of the FA cup. I am talking of a team of Wilshere, Ramsey and Randall.
Lets go ALL OUT for the League cup this year. Bendtner and Vela should be strong enough for this tournament. For the smaller teams, we should leave Nasri and Fabregas on the bench (not the stands) and for the bigger teams Nasri and Cesc must start.
We really NEED the League Cup this year.
When/If we win the CC (by around February) that should be a decent shot in the arm. That combined with some (I REALLY HOPE) signings in January, we can then go all out for the Champions League.
In between all this lets just do enough to retain top four status without giving the fans last-day heart attacks.

The League Cup? Are you ‘aving a laugh? (Is ‘e ‘aving a laugh?)
I’m betting it’s another stubborn point of principle for Wenger. He’s spent too long talking and acting as if it means nothing. And the Young Gunners performance two years ago probably left him feeling justified for life.
If he was too rigid to bring in the players we need, no way he bends on this.

AW needs to win hardware — any hardware — in order to prove to his critics that he’s achieving something besides amazing looking football.
I’m not a critic of AW, however, I’d take a CC win this year, especially if in hindsight it is the only thing we eventually take.
As for Nasri and Cesc playing together, yeah, I like it. As Fred said, Cesc makes everyone he plays with look better, but Nasri is a solid player in his own right, and I honestly am happier having him than Hleb.

Nasri definitely looks good.
But as noted, the entire team IS better with Cesc on the pitch.
Without Cesc, the team is mediocre. He brings mad skillz and major confidence for the team.
Wenger could not care less about the Carling Cup. We have had legit chances to win it, he didn’t give a toss.
He will definitely NOT CARE about the CC.
He doesn’t care about winning silverware other than the CL.
AW can’t possibly think we can win the league!
I’d love to have Hleb AND Nasri. That would be called depth. But hey, why would we want that, it’d stunt the rapid growth of our kids.

We are not Spurs. We do not need to win the Carling Cup. Yes, it would be nice for the kids but Carling Cup and mid-table or semi-final exit and third place, four points off the top?? I know which one I prefer.
We are not Spurs. We do not sell 10 players and buy 10 players every transfer window.
Some of the doom and gloom on here is incredible. We have Almunia, Fabianski, Sagna, Toure, Gallas, Clichy, Djourou, Silvestre, Gibbs, Song, Eboue, Fabregas, Nasri, Ramsey, Denilson, Diaby, Walcott, Rosicky, Wilshere, Vela, Adebayor, Van Persie, Bendtner and Eduardo. That squad is better than Man City’s best 24 or Spurs, Everton, Villa or Liverpool’s.
Chelsea or ManU are probably still ahead of us but let us wait and see how the season develops. Chelsea must be stunned by losing Robinho, the status loss will hurt, puts a lot of pressure on the manager. ManU will have to change to accommodate Berbatov.
After the international break we have three matches away from home. A real test of our squad. After those three matches, we should see some of our injured returning.
When some people say we have no chance of the title, do they mean we will finish twenty or thirty points behind? If they envisage a narrow failure they are being hysterical about the strength of the squad. Remember, if we had held on in the games against Chelsea and ManU, we would have been champions. If those two matches had ended early…….. I would not like to settle for something similar this season but the way people are talking we should finish thirty points behind in seventh place.
I am cautiously optimistic. I was never the greatest critic of Hleb, in fact I defended him on a few occasions but for me, when he hesitated and didn’t shoot and the chance was gone in the last few minutes of the Champions League game against Liverpool his time was up. Nasri has really impressed me so far, already scoring goals. Who thinks he will have more goals by Christmas than Hleb in three years? There are other signs. One goal conceded in five games. A goal and a number of assists from Denilson. van Persie looking sharper every game. Walcott producing something from his headless chicken runs. Even Eboue (who I wanted sold) contributing something positive.

If my aunty had balls she’d be my uncle

Well, we are reading every day about IF we have any more injuries, our squad is too thin.
Kettle and pots if you ask me.

Kettle & pots. LOL, nice one Irish

I agree with you irishgunner, the League Cup should not be something we strive to win but more as a tournament to develop our younger talents. Sure it would be nice to win a cup just so we could say we won something but that is out-weighed by the importance of the reserves.
When people say we have no chance of course they don’t mean we will be ending up in 7th. They’re stating that when we go head to head with Chelsea and ManU that they are favored over us. They will probably gain the valuable three points that will barely edge us out of winning the title.
And Mazza makes an excellent point :p

What youngsters? Arent they all in the first team already????
We MUST go for the League Cup. There is absolutely ZERO difference between 3rd place, 4 points off the top and fourth place, 20 points off the top. ABSOLUTELY NO DIFFERENCE.
Lets go all out for the CC, the confidence of the young team, with people like Walcott, Bendy, Ade, Denilson and Eboue all rubbing up on some silverware will be VERY GOOD FOR THEIR CONFIDENCE.
It will also help the belief in the team and allow us to really move on to tackle the champions league.
This whole “not won anything in 4 seasons thing” is going to eat them alive. They need to get it off their system FAST.
September 4th, 2008 at 5:23 pm
I agree Fredrick. We cannot pretend we are tooo big for CC when we have won nothing for three years. But i think Arsee has to stick with his principles and play the team that has got us through the rounds in the final if we get there.
“This whole “not won anything in 4 seasons thing” could well mean the break up of our squad. Fyrther undermining Arsene’s idealistic “youth project”
September 4th, 2008 at 9:49 am
Fred, I believe there IS a difference this year between 3rd and 4th place. 3rd is automatic champions league but 4th is a tougher qualification process than what we have just been through
September 4th, 2008 at 9:58 am
3rd and 4th are both the same as eachother. Both us and Liverpool have had to go through one qualifying tie to reach the champions league.
September 4th, 2008 at 12:42 pm
I think he meant from year 2009. I remember the same but not sure which year it comes into effect.
September 4th, 2008 at 2:27 pm
Yeah, you are right, from this year onwards the 3rd placed team gets in the CL group stages.
But damn, look how low we are aiming now.
We dont have the numbers to go for 4 competitions and before the season starts we are already ready to happily grab 3rd place if it was offered to us.
If a competent winger and a strong CM was brought in, it would have all been different.
But why solve your problems when you can moan?
We are developing random players who if they ever make it thru will be snapped up very, very, very easily.
Instead of buying more immediate impact “sagnas” Wenger is fretting at Man City.
September 4th, 2008 at 5:29 pm
Unfortunately Rabbits don’t come out of hats very often, “Sagnas” are hard to find or at least it unpredictable whether a signing will be a “Sagna” or a “Jeffers”.
I think Wenger wanted a certified “Sagna” i.e someone with premiership experience ala Alonso, same effect but no unpreditable magic trick.
