Arsenal vs Sunderland

Arsenal have been playing catch up to the 4 teams ahead of them for a while now and this weekend they get a great chance to make some progress. The Aston Villa vs Chelsea game kicks off the weekend and by the time Arsenal take to the field they would know if they can gain some ground on either one or the two teams ahead of them. But for that to happen Arsenal have to register a win in the league at home to Sunderland. The last time these two teams met back in October Arsenal needed an injury time header from Cesc to rescue a point.

Arsenal fans might finally get to see Arshavin in action this weekend as well so that should make for an eagerly anticipated game. The Sunderland game is the second in 4 straight home games for Arsenal as Roma and Fulham visit the Emirates next. So it is a great chance for Arsenal to shine at home and get some positive momentum going. Eduardo’s return and the fine 4-0 F.A Cup win was certainly a bright spot but Arsenal have to bring some of that form to the league and register a win after drawing their last three league games.

Eduardo is back

Question:

Despite being injured for almost a year, how did Eduardo manage to score two goals in his return game?

A) He is just that good.
B) He got lucky.
C) The opponents were not that strong.
D) It is Written.

Flashback

On Feb 23, 2008 Arsenal’s Eduardo was hacked down by Birmingham City’s Martin Taylor. Taylor broke Eduardo’s leg and even smirked after the incident. The British Media rushed to Taylor’s defense turning the villain into a victim saying such tackles are part of the game and that Taylor was “a nice guy.” Uh-huh. I am willing to bet that if the tackle was made by a non-Englishman on an English player the media would not have been so understanding and would have asked for blood. But since Eduardo was a Croatian and Arsenal were not Manchester United, things were left as is. Arsenal never recovered from that incident and threw away the title that was theirs, allowing the average Man Utd and Chelsea teams to overtake them. To make matters worse lucky Liverpool edged past Arsenal in the Champions League. Arsenal lost key players in the summer of 2008 and have been frustrating for most of the 2008/09 season so far.

Present Day: Feb 16, 2009

Almost a year later, Eduardo makes his first team return for Arsenal, scoring two goals in a 4-0 win over Cardiff City in the F.A Cup. Ofcourse this was still a 4th round F.A Cup tie with crucial league and Champions League fixtures to come, so only time will tell how much this result means in the long run. But for now I am just delighted at Dudu’s return. I can’t explain it but even though he didn’t spend that much time at Arsenal, I took to him a lot more quickly than I did with Adebayor, Bendtner and even Van Persie. So I was especially gutted at his injury and felt even worse when the rest of the Arsenal squad failed to win those crucial games post Feb 23 and kissed the title away.

I had always hoped that his return would undo events and uplift Arsenal. But so much has changed since he got injured and there has been so much negative news around the team that it will take more than his return to fix things. On the other hand, his return atleast brings a smile to my face, something that has been missing while watching most Arsenal games this season.

The logical answer is A but I am going with….
D)

Arsenal 4-0 Cardiff City :)

The 5th round of the F.A Cup kicks off this weekend while the draw for the 6th round will be made on Sunday. So when Arsenal take to the field on monday night to finish their 4th round tie, they would know the identities of their next two potential opponents. Although, before the team can look too far ahead they need to ensure a safe passage into the 5th round at the expense of last season’s F.A Cup runners up.

One of the charms about the F.A Cup is that it gives lower league teams to make a name for themselves by that one moment of magic to knock out a top level team. There are players from the big Premier League clubs who make more in a week than some of the players involved in the F.A Cup make in a year. Yet the games act as an equalizer of sorts and provide a chance for some previously unheard of player to step out of the shadows. Ofcourse, it is also important that when such a magical moment arrives the tv camera is focussed on the game itself and not cut away to some commercial lest the player’s moment of glory be missed in real time :)

Each year the F.A Cup also cycles nostalgia about past glories as the tv channels run highlights of previous key goals and moments. While there are some teams who have to look back decades for their last triumph, Arsenal’s glory years are only a few years back in the history books. Between 2001-2005 Arsenal reached 4 of the 5 F.A Cup finals winning three trophies. Arsenal’s last trophy is still the F.A Cup earned thanks to Lehmann’s penalty save and Patrick Vieira’s final kick for the team.

The above video certainly brings back memories of seeing some of those Arsenal greats and also witnessing the future in the form of Cesc and Van Persie getting a taste of the action. The 1990’s were not that shabby either as Arsenal collected two F.A Cups. But considering the changes that have happened at Arsenal over the last three seasons, those F.A Cup glory years are threatening to fade into a distant memory.

While the current Arsenal team are young, they are not that young to not remember those stellar Arsenal F.A Cup performances from a few years ago. Maybe the current squad are only looking at the 2005 F.A Cup final and taking the 0-0 score-line as their target. But the team should look at the years prior to 2005 for some inspiration. Scoring one goal in their last 4 games is certainly a fall from grace given previous standards set by Wenger’s squads. And that is even a notch below George Graham’s standards as his team thrived on “1-0 to the Arsenal”. So when monday comes, hopefully goals will also come for Arsenal. But before Arsenal’s game, there are some other interesting F.A Cup games on tap.
